Plea - Mayor Charmaine Tavares joined
Hawaii's other mayors in a last-minute effort to convince the
State Legislature not to rescind the repayments of Transient Accommodation
Tax funds to counties.
Impenetrable
Piggy Bank -
As if it weren't enough that funds are tight, this week Maui County
learned that a $32 million investment made with Merrill-Lynch
Securities is no "currently available" so the next step
is legal action.

Maui -
It's been a long time coming, but Maui Community College is now
officially The University of Hawai'i Maui College. Enrollment
has been increasing and look for it to grow even more as local
students get to stay home for a full college education.

Lt. Gov. James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr., this week announced
an aggressive campaign to curb underage drinking. Nearly $1.5
million dollars will be spent on Maui to get the word out.
Do

State lawmakers are calling it "only" a one percent
jump, but a hike in the general excise tax from four to five percent
really send it up by 20 percent. We'll explain.
Akaka
Update - The
bill introduced more than a decade ago in the U.S. Senate by Hawai'i
Senator Daniel Akaka has its best shot yet at becoming law. Controversial
and significantly different than the original measure, the bill
comes up for an important vote Monday in the nation's capitol.
