THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT FEBRUARY SAW THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE MONTH OF NEAR-RECORD SPENDING BY VISITORS TO HAWAI'I. TODAY THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY RELEASED THE NUMBERS AND THEY ARE BIG - BIGGER THAN THE "HEY DAY" OF 2007, BEFORE THE ECONOMY CRASHED. ARRIVALS TO ALL ISLANDS ARE ALSO UP, BY AN AVERAGE OF NEARLY 12 PERCENT. WE'VE GOT THE FULL REPORT ON THE BREAKING NEWS PAGE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

NOW THE BAD NEWS - STATE OFFICIALS ARE BRACING FOR WHAT THEY KNOW IS GOING TO BE A DISHEARTENING ECONOMIC FORECAST IN THE VISITOR CATEGORY FOLLOWING THE MARCH 11 EVENTS IN JAPAN. GOVERNOR ABERCROMBIE'S OFFICE IS PREDICTING A 1-POINT-THREE BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET SHORTFALL OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS. YESTERDAY THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE ANNOUNCED THEY MAY RAID THE STATE'S HURRICANE FUND AND TODAY - TALK OF THE IDEA OR RAISING GENERAL EXCISE TAX - A CAMPAIGN VOW NOT TO...IS BACK ON THE TABLE.

ISLAND WEATHER - STILL BREEZY. TONIGHT LOOK FOR LOWS IN THE 60S. MOSTLY SUNNY WITH HIGHS TOMORROW IN THE LOW TO MID 80S.

FROM THE VISIONARY RADIO NEWS CENTER FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.
