A TRAFFIC ALERT THIS AFTERNOON. LOW-HANGING WIRES HAVE FORCED MAUI POLICE TO CLOSE LAHAINALUNA ROAD BETWEEN HONOAPI'ILANI HIGHWAY AND WAINE'E ROAD IN WEST MAUI. NO WORD ON WHAT HAPPENED OR HOW LONG BEFORE THE ROAD REOPENS.

FOR THE NINTH STRAIGHT MONTH, VISITOR ARRIVALS HAVE CLIMBED IN HAWAI'I. THE NEWEST REPORT FROM THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY THIS MORNING SHOWED GROWTH ON EVERY ISLAND - WITH LANA'I AND MOLOKA'I SHOWED THE GREATEST INCREASES. VISITOR SPENDING IS UP, TOO - WAY UP. UP 30 PERCENT FROM THIS TIME LAST YEAR. VISITORS TO HAWAI'I SPENT MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS IN AUGUST. ON AVERAGE, EACH VISITOR SPENT 172 DOLLARS A DAY LAST MONTH IN HAWAII - AN INCREASE OF 12 PERCENT FROM THE YEAR BEFORE.
