J: KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE...IT'S COME A LONG WAY, BUT HAS A LONG WAY TO GO.

AND, FOR THE DREAM OF HOME OWNERSHIP ON MAUI, THERE'S GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.

THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK - PLUS WE'LL CHECK IN WITH A WORLD TRAVELER BACK ON MAUI AFTER FOUR TREKS THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS OF AFGHANISTAN LAST YEAR. THOSE STORIES PLUS SPORTS AND COMING ATTRACTIONS AND WHALES JUST HAVING FUN THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST. I'M JEFF KING. IT'S BEEN FEATURED IN SONG, POETRY AND THEATER - BUT THE DREAM OF THE REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR IS A VERY REAL-LIFE THING.

(TURN TO CAM) THIS WEEK HUNDREDS ON MAUI CAME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE DREAM AND THE MAN - INCLUDING ANOTHER MINISTER WHO ALSO NEARLY GAVE HIS LIFE FOR THE CAUSE OF CIVIL RIGHTS.

(TAKE MLK DAY PKG) "WE SHALL OVERCOME." "I HAVE A DREAM." FAMOUS LYRICS AND QUOTES STICK WITH US - BUT ALL HAD AN ORIGIN. AND MONDAY'S RALLY IN KAHULUI BROUGHT TOGTHER THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THERE REMAINS A LIVING CONNECTION TO THE PEOPLE WHO MADE AND INSPIRED THOSE QUOTES. ROBERT GRAETZ IS A RETIRED MINISTER - AS WELL AS THE RETIRED LEADER OF THE MONTGOMERY IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION IN ALABAMA - A CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP DEDEICATED TO THE CAUSE OF THE N-DOUBLE-A-C-P...WHICH, AS HE POINTS OUT, STANDS FOR THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE. AS WHITES, GRAETZ AND HIS WIFE, JEANNIE, WERE TARGETED BY RACISTS OFTEN IN THE 50S AND 60S, INCLUDING HAVING THEIR HOME BOMBED. YET THAT EVENT IS OVERSHADOWED BY THE IMPACT THE FAMOUS MARCH ON WASHINGTON HAD ON HIM IN 1963.

Robert Graetz, Retired Minister

RG01: "Yes, that's one of the things that just stands out in my mind more than about 90 percent of the things that have happened in my life. To have a quarter of a million people in Washington DC - people from every ethnic group, every economic level, from every religion - all together there, not just for peace but for justice in this nation. It was pretty powerful.

FORTY SEVEN YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THAT MONUMENTAL EVENT. AND REVEREND GRAETZ GAVE US HIS TAKE ON HOW MUCH HAS CHANGED.

RG02: "We have made enormous progress. There are so many things that have changed - one of the clearest is the number of laws that have changed. It used to be that laws in certain parts of the country preserved segregation and kept black people down. Now the laws, nationwide, are set up in such a way that that is prohibited. ///There are other laws that have been set up in such a way that provide assistance to people - that give them a leg up. But we are so far behind in the promises that we have made to people. And the fact that the ultra rich are - ///The gap between the ultra rich and the ultra poor is growing instead of lessening. The dream that Doctor King had of some basic equality among people has a long way to go."

THE CROWD AT MONDAY'S CELEBRATION IN HOALOHA PARK WAS LARGER THAN IN PAST YEARS. THE PRESDENT OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN FOUNDATION OF MAUI SAID THE INCREASE IS GREAT - BUT THE REASON WHY IS EVEN GREATER.

Angela Smith, President, African American Foundation of Maui

AS01: "I like the idea that more and more Mauins are becoming aware of exactly what Martin Luther King stood for. This year when I told them we were having Reverend Graetz here - and his wife, Jeannie, they were like 'yes, we've got to be there.' So, it's growing."

UNDER GRAY SKIES - AND OCCASSIONAL SPRINKLES - PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER TO HEAR THE MESSAGE, NOT A NEW MESSAGE - BUT A TIMELESS ONE. REVEREND GRAETZ SHARED THE MICROPHONE WITH HIS WIFE OF 58 YEARS - WHO RECOUNTED THE EVENTS OF A SCARY NIGHT. SHE HAD GIVEN BIRTH TO THEIR FOURTH CHILD JUST NINE DAYS BEFORE THEIR HOME WAS BOMBED BY THE KU KULX KLAN. STILL - SHE STAYED BY HIS SIDE AT THE FOREFRONT OF PEAK OF THE MOVEMENT IN TURBULENT ALABAMA.

EVEN THOUGH THAT WAS DECADES AGO AND A THIRD OF A WORLD AWAY FROM MAUI - MONDAY'S CELEBRATION WAS TRUE MINGLING OF PEOPLE. ENJOYING ONE ANOTHER - SERVING ONE ANOTHER - AND JUST BEING TOGETHER. THERE WAS A DISTINCT HAWAIIAN ELEMENT THERE AND UNDERSTANDABLE BECAUSE HAWAIIANS HAVE KNOWN ABOUT ACCEPTANCE ALONG THE LINES OF CULTURE, RACE AND AGE FOR - WELL - AS LONG AS THERE HAVE BEEN HAWAIIANS.

THIS EVENT TAKES A LOT OF PLANNING TO GET THE WORD OUT, GET PARADE AND ASSEMBLY PERMITS, RENT THE SPACE FROM THE CANOE CLUB - BUT YOU GET THE SENSE THAT THE ENERGY WILL KEEP IT HAPPENING FOR YEARS TO COME.

AS02: "I just get renewed every year just by talking about it and putting on something like this to make Maui aware. It's wonderful. And, on the Net, there are other islands that are doing the same thing - so everybody is trying to make it a day of service, a day of reflection and I think that is just really good."

WHILE HE SPOKE FONDLY AND TOUCHINGLY OF HIS FRIEND, MARTIN LUTHER KING, REVEREND GRAETZ' COMMENTS OFTEN REFERENCED THE WORK OF A LADY WHO LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE GRAETZ FAMILY IN MONTGOMERY - A LADY WHO'S NAME AND IMAGE ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. ROSA PARKS WAS FAMOUS FOR HER PATIENCE AND TOLERANCE - AND THE MODICUM OF WORDS TO EXPRESS GREAT THOUGHTS WHEN SHE SAID,

RG03: " We've come a long way and we've got a long way to go."

(ON-CAM TAG) FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THIS YEAR THERE ARE SEVERAL EVENTS PLANNED ACROSS MAUI. AS FEBRUARY GETS CLOSER - AND THROUGHOUT THE MONTH, GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND CLICK ON THE LINKS TO COMING ATTRACTIONS, THIS WEEK'S STORIES AND BREAKING NEWS TO KEEP UP.

(Re PRICES - FORECLOSURES) (PiP-SAKAMOTO FOR SALE SIGN)

J: WELL, WHAT DO YOU WANT FIRST - THE GOOD NEWS OR THE BAD NEWS? LET'S START WITH THE GOOD. IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET TO BUY A HOME, PRICES ON MAUI ARE THE LOWEST THEY'VE BEEN IN NEARLY SEVEN YEARS.

(VO) IT'S A BUYER'S MARKET ON MAUI AS THE MEDIAN HOME PRICE FOR SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES ON MAUI DROPPED TO JUST UNDER A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS IN 2009. THAT'S A 14 PERCENT DROP FRO THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND A FAR CRY FROM THE PEAK MARKET AVERAGE PRICE OF 690 THOUSAND IN 2006.

(FF-CG-CON'T VO) THE STEEP RISE IN PRICES BEGAN IN 2002 AND - IN 2003, THE MEDIAN PRICE FOR A HOME ON MAUI WAS ABOUT WHAT IT IS NOW. CONDO PRICES HAVE ALSO FALLEN BY ABOUT A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE YEAR BEFORE TO AN AVERAGE OF 450 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

(ON-CAM) IT'S A BUYER'S MARKET - BUT SELLERS SAW A BIT OF AN UPTICK AT THE END OF 2009. IN DECEMBER THERE WAS A SURGE OF SALES OF BOTH SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES AND CONDOS ON MAUI.

AND THE BAD NEWS. HOME FORECLOSURE ACTIONS IN THE ALOHA STATE EXPLODED LAST MONTH - PUSHING HAWAI'I TO IT'S WORST RANKING NATIONWIDE SINCE THE CURRENT HOUSING MARKET DOWNTURN BEGAN. THERE WERE MORE THAN 15 HUNDRED FORECLOSURE FILINGS STATEWIDE IN DECEMBER. THAT'S THE HIGHEST FOR ANY MONTH LAST YEAR BY FAR, AND ABOUT THREE TIMES AS MANY AS THE PREVIOUS DECEMBER.

(FF-CG-VO) MAUI COUNTY WAS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STATE RATE - WITH 297 FORECLOSURE FILINGS IN DECEMBER. THAT WORKS OUT TO ONE PER 219 HOUSEHOLDS. HONOLULU HAD THE MOST FILINGS WITH 643 - BUT THE LOWEST RATE AT ONE FILING PER 521 HOUSEHOLDS. OVERALL KAUA’I WAS THE NEXT MOST STABLE COUNTY - WITH 77 NEW FORECLOSURES. THAT'S ONE PER 379 HOUSEHOLDS. AND THE BIG ISLAND HAD THE TOUGHEST LUCK, WITH ONE HOME OUT OF EVERY 150 GOING INTO FORECLOSURE.

(ON-CAM) IN WHAT MAY BE A BIT OF A SILVER LINING, THE SPIKE IN FORECLOSURES IN DECEMBER WAS LARGELY DUE TO A FLURRY OF AUCTION NOTICES FILED BEFORE YEAR'S END ON DEFAULTS THAT HAD ACCUMULATED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ALSO, REALTY TRAC - THE ORGANIZATION THAT KEEPS TRACK OF THIS SORT OF INFORMATION, REPORTS THAT NEW DEFAULT NOTICES - THE FIRST STEP TOWARD FORECLOSURES - WERE DOWN SHARPLY IN DECEMBER. THERE WERE 75 DEFAULT NOTICES ISSUED IN HAWAII IN DECEMBER, 2009 COMPARED WITH 123 IN DECEMBER OF 2008. REALTY TRAC SAYS THAT'S A SIGN THAT THE BOTTOM MAY HAVE COME AND GONE.

(FEDS-FALSE KILLER WHALES)(PiP-dolphins)

J: IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH TO START WITH - BUT ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE THRILLED THAT THIS FIRST STEP HAS BEEN TAKEN. THIS WEEK THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE SAID THEY WILL FORM A "TAKE REDUCTION TEAM" THAT WILL DEVELOP A PLAN TO CUT BACK ON THE ACCIDENTAL KILLING OF A RARE DOLPHIN SPECIES.

(FF-CG-VO) THEY CALL THEM "FALSE KILLER WHALES" BECAUSE THEY RESEMBLE A SMALL ORCA, BUT THEY'RE REALLY A DEEP-WATER DOLPHIN THAT IS ENDANGERED BY THE PRACTICE OF LONGLINE FISHING IN HAWAI'I. THE AGENCY'S FEDERAL REGISTER SAYS THE LONGLINE METHOD IS ACCIDENTALLY KILLING OR SERIOUSLY INJURING AN AVERAGE OF SEVEN-POINT-FOUR FALSE KILLER WHALES IN WATERS OFF HAWAI'I EACH YEAR.

(ON-CAM) THAT IS MORE THAN TRIPLE THE AMOUNT OF TWO-POINT-FIVE PER YEAR THAT MARINE BIOLOGISTS BELIEVE THE POPULATION CAN AFFORD TO LOSE WITHOUT SUFFERING THE EFFECTS OF SUSTAINING ITSELF. DON'T LOOK FOR ACTION RIGHT AWAY, BUT AT LEAST THERE'S MOVEMENT TOWARD PROTECTING THESE MAGNIFICENT CREATURES.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, HE'S TRAVELLED BACK AND FORTH TO AFGHANISTAN FOR NEARLY FORTY YEARS. UP NEXT WE'LL CATCH UP WITH A GEM HUNTER TO FIND OUT HOW DIFFERENT THINGS ARE THERE THESE DAYS. AND WE HAVE DETAILS ON A CONTEST FOR CREATIVE YOUNG VIDEOGRAPHERS - PLUS SOME VIDEO OF WHALES JUST HAVING FUN. THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(BOWERSOX-TOPAZ)(PiP-BOWERSOX)

J: BUSINESS AND PLEASURE. PLEASURE AND PAIN. PAIN AND WAR. WAR...AND CENTURIES OF WAR. IN A NUTSHELL, THAT DESCRIBES LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN. THIS WEEK WE CAUGHT UP WITH A MAN WHO'S BEEN THERE MANY TIMES IN SEARCH OF TREASURES - AND HE SAYS THE TREASURES ARE STILL THERE.

(TAKE Topaz/Bowersox Pkg) THE VIDEO IS INTRIGUING - ALMOST INDIANA JONES-LIKE. BUT IT'S BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE IT WAS RECORDED. THE STAR OF THE VIDEO, "THE GEM HUNTER," IS GARY BOWERSOX. HIS CAREER HAS SPANNED DECADES OF TAKING THE ROAD, THE PATH AND THE CAVE LESS TREVELED TO FIND THE WORLD'S MOST PRECIOUS STONES: RUBIES, EMERALDS, SAPPHIRES AND SUCH. WE INTERVIEWED THE INTREPID INTERNATIONAL MERCHANT LAST YEAR AT THE TOPAZ GOLDSMITH AND GALLERY IN KIHEI DURING HIS ANNUAL GEM SHOW. BUT - WITH THE TRAGFIC AND FEARFUL GOINGS ON IN AFGHANISTAN OVER THE PAST YEAR - WE WANTED TO SEE IF HE WAS FOOLISH ENOUGH - OR MAYBE BRAVE ENOUGH TO CONTINUE HIS GEM QUEST THERE. HE HAS - A LOT.

THE "GEM HUNTER" IS GETTING A LITTLE OLDER - HE BROKE AN ANKLE THIS YEAR - BUT IT WAS DUE TO SLIDING DOWN A MOUNTAIN SLOPE AND NOT BECAUSE OF AFGHAN INSURGENTS OR TALIBAN INTERFERENCE. IN FACT, AS A GEMOLOGIST WHO IS A YEAR WISER - AND OLDER - THAN LAST TIME WE SPOKE WITH HIM, BOWERSOX MADE AN INTERESTING GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATION.

Gary Bowersox, Gemologist,

GB01: "Those mountains were three miles higher this year than they were last year."

BUT, HE TRAVELLED TO AFGHANISTAN TO SEARCH FOR THESE KINDS OF GEMS - AND THOSE FAR MORE PRECIOUS - FOUR TIMES IN 2009. SO WE ASKED I THE NATION WAS A MORE DANGEROUS PLACE THEN IT WAS A YEAR AGO.

GB02: "Uhhhh. No. I have to say not. Most of the military is in their compounds and where I'm going very few military are to be seen. So I'd say it hasn't changed at all in those areas."

OVERALL, BOWERSOX SAYS, THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE NATION HAS CHANGED - AND SO HAS HIS LIFELONG CAREER PATH. INSTEAD OF A ONE-MAN GEM-HUNTING CREW WITH LOCAL SUPPORT, NOW HE'S AN EMPLOYEE OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT - AND PART OF HIS JOB IS BRINGING AFGHANISTAN TO AMERICA. IN FACT, HE'LL BE BRINGING 20 AFGHAN LOCALS TO THE U.S. THROUGH HONOLULU TO A GEM SHOW IN ARIZONA.

GB03: "These are locals and some of 'em look just like Osama bin Laden. Wait 'til they hit the Honolulu Airport. I'm not sure what's going to be more of a shock - that - or being used to their women in burkas when I show 'em Waikiki."

AND HIS TREKS THROUGH THE MAZE OF MOUNTAIN PASSAGES IN AFGHANISTAN OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES HAVE ALSO CHANGED - BECAUSE OF TECHNOLOGY.

GB04: "What we did is we went o every emerald tunnel, every ruby tunnel, took GPS, interviewed the miners. We've now proven that the lapiz minds extend at least 40 percent fiurther than any scientist had ever discovered before - because we're working with sattelite maps and spectral analysis. It was amazing. They were doing, believe it or not, at least 50 million dollars this year in their emeralds alone. I've believed this for a long time - and I think I said this last year - they could jumpstart their economy with their gemstones and right behind it is all their minerals so, Afghanistan is an extremely wealthy country with all their minerals, uranium, gold, copper, lead, zinc, oil, gas, so that's why everybody fights for it all the time."

STILL, SAYS THE GEM HUNTER, THE MAJOR NATIONAL EXPORT IS OPIUM FROM LOCALLY HARVESTED POPPIES - AND IT'S WORSE THAN EVER.

GB05: "Yeah. That's discouraging 'cuz this year they were giving the kids free drugs in Kabul and stuff like that. It's going to be a total narco state and not a lot is being done about it, sadkly enough."

BUT THE LURE OF HIS CAREER AND THE MYSTIQUE OF WHAT IS STILL UNDISCOVERED WILL BRING HIM BACK TO ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS NATIONS. AND TO FULLFILL A HUMANITARIAN COMMITMENT TO DELIVER HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES THROUGH ROTARY AND EYEGLASSES FROM KAMEHAMEHA LIONS CLUB IN HONOLULU.

THESE GEMS DON'T JUST POP OUT OF THE GROUND - THEY'RE HTE WORK OF CENTURIES OF GEOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT AND HUMAN SACRIFICE. MAYBE THAT'S WHY THEY CALL THEM "PRECIOUS."
(ON-CAM) TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EXPLORATIONS OF GARY BOWERSOX - OR HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE WORK OF ROTARY OR THE LIONS' CLUB EFFORTS, VISIT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(METH PROJECT)(PiP-METH-NOT EVEN ONCE)

J: BY NOW YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN THOSE DISTURBING PUBLIC SERVICE MESSAGES ON TV WITH THE MESSAGE: METH - NOT EVEN ONCE. HAWAI'I RANKS THIRD IN THE U.S. IN DRUG REHAB ADMISSION FROM THE USE OF METHAMPHETAMINES. THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE STARTLING FACTS ON THE HAWAII METH PROJECT WEBSITE. TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE INCREDIBLE DANGERS OF THE DRUG, THE HAWAII METH PROJECT IS JOINING WITH HAWAII MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION - HMSA - TO REWARD HAWAII YOUTH FOR HELPING GET THE MESSAGE OUT.

HMSA HAS ADDED A CATEGORY TO THEIR POPULAR TEEN VIDEO AWARDS CONTEST FOR 2010. THE CONTEST CHALLENGES MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO CREATE AN ORIGINAL PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THIS CRITICAL HEALTH ISSUE AFFECTING SO MANY PEOPLE OF ALL AGES ACROSS OUR STATE.
