J: THE DEBATE GOES NATIONWIDE. MAUI'S GUBERNATORIAL FACE-OFF BETWEEN DUKE AIONA AND NEIL ABERCROMBIE IS REBROADCAST ON C-SPAN - PLUS EACH PICKED UP ENDORSEMENTS ON MAUI THIS WEEK. AND WE'LL VISIT WITH OUR OUTGOING GOVERNOR AS SHE ATTENDS HER LAST FREE DAY AT THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS THE NEW YEAR MIGHT ALSO BRING A CHANGE...IN THE WEATHER. IN SPORTS, TEAM PRIMO NEVER HAD A CHANCE IN SUNDAY'S MOLOKA'I HOE. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES-BROWN IS TAKING THE WEEK OFF TO PREPARE FOR HIS NEXT DRAMATIC ROLE - AND HIS STAND-IN IS SCARY. THAT'S ALL AHEAD THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. AND THANK YOU TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING AND THIS IS MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - IN HIGH DEFINITION. THANK YOU FOR THE EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS. WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOT BRINGING YOU A SHOW LAST WEEK. A MEDICAL PRIORITY TOOK US TO THE MAINLAND ON SHORT NOTICE. WE'LL TELL YOU MORE ABOUT IT NEXT WEEK.

TWO AND A HALF WEEKS AWAY FROM ELECTION DAY AND THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR IN HAWAII IS GAINING NATIONAL ATTENTION. THE MAUI DEBATE BETWEEN DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE NEIL ABERCROMBIE AND REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE - AND CURRENT LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DUKE AIONA, TOOK THE NATIONAL STAGE THIS WEEK.

(TAKE DEBATE C-SPAN PKG) KNOWN FOR THEIR THOROUGH - YET NOT OFTEN EXCITING PROGRAMMING - THE C-SPAN TELEVISION NETWORK PUT HAWAII'S RACE FOR THE TOP IN PRIME TIME THIS WEEK. THE MAUI DEBATE BETWEEN INCUMBENT LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DUKE AIONA AND FORMER CONGRESSMAN NEIL ABERCROMBIE UNFOLDED LAST WEEK IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE AT THE MAUI ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER, AND A STATEWIDE AUDIENCE ON HAWAI'I PUBLIC RADIO. IN ADDITION, AKAKU - MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION'S BROADCAST WAS PICKED UP BY C-SPAN AND WILL BE PERIODICALLY REBROADCAST ON THE CABLE NETWORK CHANNEL SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT WEEK. ONE CAMPAIGN OFFICIAL SPECULATED THAT THE REASON FOR THE NATIONAL EXPOSURE WAS THE LATE-CAMPAIGN POLL THAT SHOWED THE TWO WERE KNOTTED AT 48 PERCENT APIECE. PREVIOUS POLLS HAD SHOWN ABERCROMBIE WITH AS MUCH AS A 12-POINT LEAD IN THE POLLS OVER AIONA.

(ON-CAM TAG) AND AS THE FINAL DATE NEARS, ENDORSEMENTS ARE FLOWING MORE FREELY. THIS WEEK THE MAUI CHAPTER OF THE SIERRA CLUB RELEASED IT'S FULL LIST OF ENDORSEMENTS WITH THE TEAM OF ABERCROMBIE AND SCHATZ AS THEIR PICK FOR THE STATE'S TOP OFFICE. MEANWHILE THE MAUI HOTEL AND LODGING ASSOCIATION THIS WEEK ENDORSED THE AIONA FINNEGAN REPUBLICAN PAIR AS THEIR PICK FOR GOVERNOR AND L-G.

(AIONA CAMPAIGN)(PiP-DUKE)

J: SPEAKING OF THE L-G, BEFORE WE LEFT TOWN WE CAUGHT UP WITH LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR AIONA TO ASK WHY HIS CAMPAIGN APPEARANCES ON MAUI SEEMED SO SPARSE AHEAD OF THE PRIMARY ELECTION LAST MONTH.

(TAKE AIONA VOSOT)

(LINGLE - FAREWELL)

J: ALSO AT THE FAIR, WE GOT TO SPEND A FEW MOMENTS WITH OUR STATE'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE. GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE WILL HAVE TO PAY TO GET INTO THE 89TH ANNUAL MAUI COUNTY FAIR NEXT YEAR, BUT SHE GAVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT SHE'LL BE DOING BETWEEN NOW AND THEN.

(TAKE LINGLE PKG)

(ON-CAM TAG) THE MAUI NEWS RAN AN EDITORIAL ON TUESDAY REMINDING BOTH CANDIDATES THAT THEY'LL HAVE SOME BIG SHOES TO FILL TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MAUI'S OWN LINDA LINGLE.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, (SNIFF) DO YOU SMELL THAT? THEY SAY COFFEE IS ONE OF THE MOST SOOTHING AROMAS IN THE WORLD. WELL, IN THIS WEEK'S GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! SEGMENT, PREPARE TO BE SOOTHED - COURTESY OF THE MAUI GROWN COFFEE COMPANY. PLUS - THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS LAST MONTH WAS REALLY DRY. NO NEWS THERE - BUT NEXT JANUARY, A CHANGE MAY BE A 'COMIN'. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL)(PiP-GCTL LOGO)

J: “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” WE SAY THAT A LOT - AND THE IDEA IS REALLY CATCHING ON. FROM BEEF TO BEER TO MALASADAS TO SHOES...THE LOCALLY-GROWN CHOICE IS PROVING TO BE THE SUPERIOR ONE. THIS WEEK, WE PROVE IT AGAIN, COURTESY OF THE MAUI GROWN COFFEE COMPANY.

(TAKE GCTL-MAUI GOWN COFFEE PKG) TO MANY - AROUND THE WORLD - IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT OF THE DAY...THE FIRST CUP OF COFFEE. BUT, TO GET THERE, PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART HAPPENS BEFORE YOU POUR THE FIRST CUP. AND TO LISTEN TO JEFF FERGUSON, MANAGER AT THE MAUI GROWN COFFEE STORE, IT REALLY HAPPENS LONG BEFORE THAT.

Jeff Ferguson, Maui Grown Coffee Store Manager

JF01: "It starts with the growing of the coffee. Then the processing of the coffee, the harvesting of the coffee, the transportation of the coffee from the producing countries. Then the receiving, the roasting of the coffee, grinding, brewing - distribution - into the specialty stores, except stores that roast their own coffee. Then there's the enjoyment of the coffee, whether at a coffee bar, brewing it at home - grinding it - it's that grinding sound and smell that really brings forth the fruits of the effort of everybody in that chain that has made for a good cup of coffee."

HAWAII IS THE ONLY STATE IN AMERICA THAT GROWS COFFEE AND - CONTRARY TO WHAT SOME MIGHT THINK, NOT ALL COFFEE FROM HAWAII IS KONA COFFEE.

Kimo Falconer, Owner, Maui Grown Coffee/ Maui Grown Coffee Company Store

KF01: "No. Kona is a region on the Big Island. And they're a very famous coffee - very good coffee - very well-known, probably one of the first specialty coffees in the world,. Maui is this origin. But Kona is a an origin just like Columbian is an origin Maui is another origin. We're the only growers of certified Maui origin in the world."

THERE'S NO QUESTION THAT THESE FOLKS KNOW THEIR COFFEE - AND THEY LOVE IT.

JF02: "On the Ka'anapali Estate we grow four varieties: Maui Mokka, famous Maui Mokka, the red catwyee, yellow catura and tippica. And with those four varieties we make different blends. Everything we offer in the store is 100 percent Maui coffee from that farm."

THAT FARM IS KA'ANAPALI COFFEE ESTATES - WITH SWEEPING VIEWS OF WEST MAUI, MOLOKA'I AND LANA'I. THERE ARE WOODEN VIEWING PLATFORMS ON EACH OF THE FARM'S 51 FIVE-ACRE LOTS THAT GIVE HOMEOWNERS AN OVERVIEW OF THEIR PIECE OF PARADISE. AND WITH THE GUARANTEE THAT ONLY 51 SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES WILL OCCUPY THESE 500 ACRES, COUPLED WITH THE RECORD HARVEST LAST YEAR, THE TIMING, THE LOCATION AND THE FUTURE LOOK PRETTY BRIGHT.

KF04: "The story goes on and on. It's a wonderful island., It's just a wonderful place to live, and to visit. And we've got this wonderful opportunity of growing this great crop and lots of land to do it on, we just hope we can make it continue to grow and grow because a lot of crops are failing in Hawai'i and we're one of the ones that's actually going in the other direction, so it's very positive."

COFFEE IS ONE OF THOSE STAPLES THAT IS UNIVERSAL AND THE MAUI GROWN COFFEE STORE SUPPLIES LOCALS AND VISITORS - CONSISTENTLY.

JF03: "We're very fortunate, we have a lot of local support and a lot of tourists. What's really special is that we;'ve been here now for four years - and they come back. And the first thing thay say is 'I'm back.' We'll often recognize them. And then they bring in their mother. They bring in their uncle. In many cases it's their first stop they make - and they'll tell us that: 'This is our first stop while we're on Maui to brew while they're here.' Then on their way out of town they'll come by to get a little more to take back."

AND WHAT A PERFECT PLACE TO GIVE DIRECTIONS. YOU DON'T NEED A G.P.S. IF YOU'RE ANYWHERE ON THE WEST SIDE, YOU ONLY NEED TO LOOK UP.

JF04: "The smokestack really helps - 'cuz we're really out of the way. The reason that we're located here is that this started with Pioneel Mill, the sugar company. This office was the company store - so it's over a hundred years old. Then when the coffee division got started with Kimo and his crew, they gave it to the coffee division. The mills gone - been torn down - but the little coffee building is left behind."

THEIR GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL SPECIAL IS A MONEY-SAVING EYE-OPENER.

JF05: "We have a blend which we call our estate blend - a blend of tippica and yellow catura. It's close to a Kona, but it's not a Kona. We blend those two varieties together because we feel it's an enhancement and we offer it at 20 percent off to Got Choice customers. And we have a dark estate and an estate blend."

SO, FOR A GREAT CUP OF LOCAL JOE, STOP BY THE MAUI GROWN COFFEE COMPANY STORY NEXT TO THE SMOKE STACK ON LAHAINALUNA ROAD. THE WORLD IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE, AND MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE LEARNING THAT WHEN YOU GOT CHOICE, THINKING LOCAL WILL GET YOU A CUP OF THE RICHEST KINE.

(ON-CAM) TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MORE THAN 200 MAUI COUNTY BUSINESSES THAT ARE OFFERING SPECIAL DEALS TO KAMA’AINA AND VISITORS ALIKE, JUST GO TO MAUI-COUNTY-THINK-LOCAL-DOT-COM. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND PRINT VALUABLE COUPONS - MAKING ENJOYING MAUI EVEN SWEETER!

SEPT RAINFALL - WINTER FORECAST)

J: THE BEST WE COULD GET IN SEPTEMBER RAINWISE WAS JUST UNDER 13 INCHES AT PU'U KUKUI. THAT WAS BARELY MORE THAN HALF OF WHAT A NORMAL SEPTEMBER WOULD BRING. BUT IT COULD BE WORSE - AND IN KIHEI - IT WAS

(FF-CG-VO) TRY ZERO. NARY A DROP IN THE OFFICIAL KIHEI RAIN GAGE. LAHAINALUNA'S RAIN GAGE SCORED A TOTAL OF ABOUT TWO DROPS. AND UNTIL SEPTEMBER KAHULUI AIRPORT AND ULUPALAKUA RANCH WERE ON TRACK FOR THEIR DRIEST YEARS ON RECORD - BUT A COUPLE OF GOOD SHOWERS BLESSED BOTH SPOTS.

(ON-CAM) MEANWHILE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS WE'RE LIKELY IN FOR AN UNUSUALLY WET WINTER - AND WOULDN'T THAT BE NICE. MOSTLY. THE EL NINO CONDITIONS WE'VE BEEN IN ARE BEING BLAMED FOR ONE OF THE DRIEST YEARS ON RECORD IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE BUT - AS THE EQUATORIAL SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES DROP BY TWO OR THREE DEGREES, THE RESULTING LA NINA WINTER CONDITIONS COULD BRING RAIN, LOTS OF IT - AND SOMETIMES MAYBE TOO MUCH OF IT AT ONCE.

(VO) LIKE THE DECEMBER, 2007, STORM CONDITIONS THAT BROUGHT DAMAGE OF ALL KINDS TO ALL PARTS OF THE VALLEY ISLE. AND THE MOST UNPREDICTABLE PART IS THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF IT ALL.

(ON-CAM) LA NINA WINTERS FRUSTRATE FORECASTERS MOST BECAUSE WEATHER SYSTEMS DEVELOP AND DISSOLVE SO QUICKLY THAT LONG-RANGE FORECASTS ARE AT THEIR LEAST RELIABLE.

(MECO - ENERGY AUDIT)

J: AMONG OTHER THINGS, OCTOBER IS ENERGY AWARENESS MONTH. FOR MOST OF US THAT MEANS LITTLE MORE THAN REMINDING US HOW MUCH ENERGY COSTS WHEN WE GET THE MAUI ELECTRIC BILL. WELL NOW MAUI ELECTRIC WANTS TO HELP YOU FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH YOUR SPENDING - AND ON WHAT.

(FF-CG-VO) THE MECO WEBSITE OFFERS THREE WEB-BASED ENERGY AUDIT TOOLS THAT WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HOME'S ENERGY CONSUMPTION, SEE WHERE YOU AND WHEN YOU SPEND THE MOST ON YOUR BILL AND MORE. YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM AMONG THREE PROGRAMS ON THE WEBSITE AND ONE OF THEM, MICROSOFT HOHM, EVEN MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO SAVE AND HOW MUCH YOU WOULD SAVE BY SWITCHING TO MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT APPLIANCES.

(ON-CAM) THERE'S NO COST FOR THE HOME ENERGY AUDIT ON THE MECO WEBSITE. FOR DETAILS, AND THE EXACT LINK, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, HE'S SCARY...AND IT'S CREEPY. JONATHAN BREWSTER IS IN FOR PAUL JANES-BROWN FOR THIS WEEK'S CURTAIN CALL. THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND A TOUGH DAY IN THE TREACHEROUS KAIWI CHANNEL FOR MAUI PADDLERS. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(C-BLOCK)

(SPORTS)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, IT WAS NOT TO BE FOR TEAM PRIMO IN SUNDAY'S MOLOKA'I HOE. AND THEY KNEW IT DURING THE FIRST CREW CHANGE. MAUI'S PETER KONOHIA DISLOCATED HIS SHOULDER TRYING TO ENTER THE CANOE. THE BOAT HAD TO STOP - AND WITH THAT THE TEAM LOST A LEADER AND ANY CHANCE AT THE TOP SPOT. BUT THAT WAS PRETTY WELL CEMENTED FROM THE BEGINNING, TOO. TAHITI'S SHELL VA'A TOOK THE EARLY LEAD AND NEVER LOST IT - WINNING THEIR FIFTH STRAIGHT MOLOKA'I HOE - COVERING 41 MILES FROM HALE A LONO HARBOR ON MOLOKA'I TO DUKE'S BEACH ON O'AHU IN JUST UNDER FOUR HOURS AND 39 MINUTES. AND THE RACE ALSO TOOK ITS TOLL ON ANOTHER PADDLER. MAUI FIRE AND RESCUE CREWS PULLED A 25 YEAR-OLD MAN OUT OF THE WATER AFTER HE WAS STRUCK BY THE PROPELLER OF THE CHASE BOAT HIS CREW WAS USING DURING THAT SAME FIRST WATER CHANGE AT LA'AU POINT. NOT IDENTIFIED, THE MAN IS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP - PJB)

J: MAUI ON STAGE OPENS ITS SEASON WITH THE CLASSIC MURDER COMEDY ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, WE HAVE A SPECIAL GUEST FOR THIS WEEK’S CURTAIN CALL WHO LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE THE GUY WHO PLAYED FRANKENSTEIN IN THE THIRTIES.

PJB: HELLO MY NAME IS JONATHAN BREWSTER. I’VE COME BACK FROM A LONG STAY AWAY TO MOVE BACK IN WITH MY AUNTS, ABBY AND MARTHA, BARBARA SEDANO, WHO WAS MOST RECENTLY SEEN AS QUEEN LOVEY IN PRO ARTS PRODUCTION OF SLEEPING BEAUTY AND JOYCE ROMERO WHOSE LATEST ROLE, BESIDES BEING A NEW GRANDMA, WAS AS MOTHER SUPERIOR IN THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

OUR FAMILY HOME, WHICH IS AMONGST THE OLDEST IN BROOKLYN, HAS A PERFECT PLACE FOR ME TO CHANGE MY FACE AND I’VE BROUGHT MY BUMBLING, ALCOHOLIC PLASTIC SURGEON DR. EINSTEIN, NOT THAT DR EINSTEIN, DR HERMAN EINSTEIN AKA NORMAN HALLIP. HE HAS GIVEN ME SEVERAL FACES AND THIS ONE WAS, SHALL WE SAY, A MISTAKE. HE’D BETTER GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME.

I ALSO HAVE A SCORE TO SETTLE WITH MY BROTHER, THE FAMOUS THEATER CRITIC MORTIMER BREWSTER WHO IS AKA MARK BOLDEN, YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN HIM IN MOS’ PRODUCTION OF THE WEDDING SINGER. MY OTHER BROTHER IS REALLY OFF HIS ROCKER…HE THINKS HE’S THE PRESIDENT, NOT THE CURRENT ONE, BUT THE ROUGH RIDER HIMSELF TEDDY ROOSEVELT! MAYBE HE THINKS THAT BECAUSE HIS NAME IS TEDDY AND YOU MIGHT KNOW HIM AS VINNIE LINARES. HE’S BEST KNOWN FOR HIS GREAT PORTRAYAL OF ST. DAMIEN IN HIS ONE MAN SHOW.

MY TWIT BROTHER MORTIMER IS ENGAGED TO THE MINISTER’S DAUGHTER ELAINE HARPER A MEDDLING, BUSY BODY WHO STICKS HER NOSE WHERE IT SHOULDN’T BE. YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN HER IN MOS’ PRODUCTION OF TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD HER OTHER NAME IS HANA VALLE.

THIS WHOLE THING IS UNDER THE ABLE DIRECTION OF STEVEN DASCOULIAS WHO ALSO PLAYS REV. HARPER. ON HAND FOR THE PROCEEDINGS IS CHARLIES DUNGANS AS THE DIRECTOR OF HAPPY DALE NURSING HOME AND MR. GIBBS, A HOST OF POLICE INCLUDING ALLAN COHEN, IKAIKA AHINA, GREG COTTON AND ERIC MOLINA.

THIS FACE HAS CAUSED ME ENDLESS PROBLEMS. IT SEEMS EVERYONE HAS SEEN THE MOVIE AND WHEN YOU’VE CHANGED YOUR FACE BECAUSE YOU WANT NOT TO BE KNOWN AND YOU GET A FACE THAT EVERYONE KNOWS…WELL I’M SURE YOU GET THE PICTURE.

ALL DOCTOR EINSTEIN AND I WANT IS TO SETTLE DOWN AND OPEN UP A BEAUTY SHOP WHERE ANYONE WHO NEEDS A NEW FACE CAN COME FOR A PRICE. BUT THERE’S SOMETHING STRANGE GOING ON IN THAT HOUSE AND I INTEND TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT. I CAN’T QUITE PUT MY FINGER ON IT AT THE MOMENT, BUT I HAVE A FUNNY FEELING THAT MY AUNTS ARE HIDING SOMETHING FROM ME. THEY ARE ACTING MOST PECUIARLARLY.

WELL AFTER I TAKE CARE OF MY BROTHERS, I’LL GET AROUND TO THEM. YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT I MEAN BY COMING DOWN TO THE IAO THEATER ON FRI AND SAT AT 7;30 P.M AND ON SUNDAY’S AT 3 P.M. UNTIL OCTOBER 25TH. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO MAUITVNEWS.COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS.

THAT’S CURTAIN CALL FOR THIS WEEK. GOOD BYE. I’M TOLD PAUL JANES-BROWN WILL BE RETURNING NEXT WEEK. STAY TUNED FOR COMING ATTRACTIONS RIGHT AFTER THESE MESSAGES.
