J: A MAJOR BLOW TO THE ILLICIT DRUG TRADE ON MAUI AS TWO SEPARATE BUSTS YANK POUNDS OF ICE OFF THE STREETS. AND RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS ON MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND GET A MAJOR CHARGE IN THE FORM OF FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS - WITH A MAJOR ELECTION JUST DAYS AWAY, WE'LL REVISIT OUR MOST RECENT CONVERSATION WITH OUTGOING GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE TO GET HER PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT MAY LIE AHEAD.

IN SPORTS, THE M-I-L FOOTBALL SEASON IS ABOUT TO WRAP UP AND THE WINNERS JUST KEEP ON WINNING. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES BROWN SAYS THERE'S A NEW FIT TO "THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES." THAT'S ALL AHEAD - ALONG WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. AND THANK YOU TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS, MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - IN HIGH DEFINITION. I'M JEFF KING. THOSE HARD-HITTING ADS POUND HOME THE MESSAGE: "METH - NOT EVEN ONCE." WELL, OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS, MAUI POLICE HAVE TAKEN MAJOR STRIDES TO MAKE SURE METH DOESN'T HAPPEN EVEN ONCE FOR A LOT OF MAUI USERS.

(TAKE DRUG BUST PKG)

(ON-CAM TAG) WHILE POLICE SAY THE TWO DRUG RAIDS WERE NOT CONNECTED, THEY DID CONFIRM THAT THERE ARE MORE OPERATIONS IN THE WORKS TO WORK TOWARD CUTTING OFF THE SUPPLY OF METH IN MAUI COUNTY.

(LAHAINA-HALLOWEEN)(PiP-COSTUMES)

J: AND MAUI POLICE WILL BE OUT IN FORCE - BUT DOZENS AND NOT HUNDREDS THIS HALLOWEEN IN LAHAINA. POLICE CHIEF GARY YABUTA DENIED THE PERMIT APPLICATION TO CLOSE FRONT STREET BETWEEN DICKINSON AND PAPALAUA STREETS FOR FIVE HOURS THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED THE ONCE-VAUNTED "MARDI GRAS OF THE PACIFIC" TO SPILL INTO THE STREETS. BETWEEN 1989 AND 2007 THE ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BASH IN LAHAINA GREW FROM CUTE KEIKI IN COSTUMES TO ROWDY GROWN-UPS IN COSTUMES - AND SMALLER AND MORE REVEALING OF THOSE. THE CULTURAL RESOURCES COMMISSION SAID THAT - AFTER TWO DECADES, IT WAS OUT OF HAND, TOO ROWDY AND CULTURALLY INSENSITIVE., SO THEY REVOKED THE EVENT’S PERMIT THREE YEARS AGO.

FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS IT'S BEEN QUIET. IN FACT, LAST YEAR NOBODY EVEN FILED FOR A PERMIT TO CLOSE A PORTION OF FRONT STREET. THIS YEAR CHIEF YABUTA SAID THE EFFORT WAS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE, AND WOULD NOT GIVE HIS DEPARTMENT TIME TO RESCHEDULE OFFICERS TO HANDLE THE ANTICIPATED STREET CROWD - WHILE STILL SERVING AND PROTECTING THE REST OF THE COUNTY. THE LAHAINATOWN ACTION COMMITTEE SAYS THEY'LL GO AHEAD WITH A SLIGHTLY SUBDUED PARTY PLAN THIS YEAR, THEN GET AN EARLIER START ON NEXT YEAR'S PAPERWORK.

(ARRA-RENEWABLE ENERGY)(PiP-WINDMILLS)

J: ONE OF THE BIGGEST DRAWBACKS TO ANY OF THE VERY EXCITING RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS MAUI COUNTY IS CONSIDERING IS THE "WHADDYA DO?" FACTOR. WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER SUNSET, OR WHEN THE WIND DIES, OR THE OCEAN GOES FLAT CALM? THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS ENERGY STORAGE TO KEEP THE ELECTRICITY FLOWING WHEN THE WINDMILLS AREN'T TURNING. BUT THAT MEANS BATTERIES AND THEY'RE EXPENSIVE, OFTEN TOXIC AND THEY DON'T LAST LONG.

RESEARCH INTO THE MOST EFFICIENT ENERGY ALTERNATIVES HAS BEEN GOING ON SMALL-KINE, BUT THIS WEEK IT GOT A MAJOR BOOST. THE HAWAI'I DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM HAS AWARDED MAUI COUNTY ONE-POINT-TWO MILLION DOLLARS FROM FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS TO WORK ON ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTIONS. ONE OF THE FIRST PROJECTS WILL BE ON MOLOKA'I TO ALLOW MORE HOMES AND BUSINESSES THERE TO GO WITH PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER DURING THE DAY - AND SOME KIND OF BATTERY SOURCE FOR ELECTRICITY AFTER DARK.

THE BIG ISLAND IS ALSO GETTING A GRANT - HAWAI'I ELECTRIC LIGHT COMPANY WILL RECEIVE 900 THOUSAND DOLLARS TOWARD REACHING AN ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTION. IF YOU'D LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EITHER OR BOTH OF THESE PROJECTS, JUST GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, CHANGES ARE AHEAD AT TWO OF OUR ISLAND'S MOST PRECIOUS NATURAL RESOURCES. AND, IF YOU'RE THE KIND OF PERSON WHO NEEDS TO GET INFORMATION, LOTS OF IT, ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT, THEN WE'VE GOT THE LINK FOR YOU. THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(IAO PARKING)(PiP-IAO NEEDLE)

J: IF YOU'VE BEEN TO 'IAO VALLEY STATE PARK RECENTLY YOU'VE NOTICED THE CHANGE. NOW IT COSTS FIVE DOLLARS TO PARK THERE - IF YOU'RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE.

(VO) THE INCREDIBLE VIEWS AND HISTORY OF THE 'IAO VALLEY DRAW THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EVERY YEAR AND THAT MANY FOOTSTEPS TAKE THEIR TOLL ON RESOURCES. SO, TO MAINTAIN THE PARK - AS WELL AS THE STATE'S OTHER PARKS AND HARBORS, 'IAO VALLEY STATE PARK IS NOW ONE OF THE PLACES THAT WILL CHARGE FIVE DOLLARS PER CAR FOR NON-RESIDENTS. THE PRICE GOES UP WITH THE SIZE OF THE VEHICLE.

IF YOU'RE LOCAL, A OLE PILIKIA. JUST SHOW YOUR LOCAL I.D. AND PARK FOR FREE. THE STATE HAS BEEN CHARGE NON-RESIDENT ADMISSION FEES AT HANAUMA BAY ON O'AHU FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS. ON MAUI, THE MAIN PARKING LOTS AT MAKENA BEACH STATE PARKS MAY ALSO SEE A NON-RESIDENT CHARGE COMING SOON.

(AHIHI-KINAU)(PiP-DLNR LOGO)

J: AND THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES IS ALSO TAKING PUBLIC COMMENT ON HOW AND HOW LONG ACCESS TO AHIHI-KINA'U NATURAL AREA RESERVE SHOULD BE RESTRICTED. AFTER GUIDE BOOKS LIKE MAUI REVEALED PROVIDED ADVICE ON SHORTCUTS AND LOOPHOLES, AREAS LIKE FISHBOWL AND AQUARIUM HAVE BEEN SEVERELY OVERUSED AND THE D-L-N-R CLOSED THEM TO PUBLIC ACCESS IN 2008. THEY REMAIN CLOSED - BUT PEOPLE STILL GO. A PUBLIC MEETING WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN KIHEI PRESENTED THE D-L-N-R'S DRAFT MANAGEMENT PLAN. IF YOU COULDN'T BE THERE TO SEE IT, YOU CAN SEE IT ONLINE, THEN COMMENT AT THEIR NEXT PUBLIC MEETING ON MAUI ON NOVEMBER THIRD. FOR THE LINK TO THE PLAN, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(LINGLE)(PiP-LINGLE)

J: IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS, HER SUCCESSOR WILL BE NAMED. IN ANOTHER 12 WEEKS AFTER THAT, HER 22-YEAR RUN IN ELECTED OFFICE WILL COME TO AN END - AT LEAST FOR NOW. THIS WEEK WE CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION WE HAD WITH GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE AS SHE ATTENDED THE COUNTY FAIR EARLIER THIS MONTH.

(TAKE LINGLE PKG) THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR'S ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN A BIT THIS YEAR - BUT ONE FAIRGOER GREATLY ENJOYED THE MODWAY, THE PARADE AND THE FOOD. AND GOVERNOR LINGLE ALSO ENJOYED THE FACT THAT ELECTION SEASON IS NEARING AN END.

Linda Lingle, Governor, State of Hawai'i

LL03: I'm glad the primary is over. I thought the Democratic porimary in the governor's race was very disappointing because they never did focus on any of the issues . We never really understood where the candidates stood on the issues. That's why I was very glad to see the lieutenant governor come out and challenge his opponent to six debates. He basically said these 30-second sound bites aren't giving the public the information they need."

AS TIME WINDS DOWN ON HER WATCH, THERE'S STILL WORK TO DO, SO GOVERNOR LINGLE HAS NOT PREPARED HER PARTING STATEMENT YET.

LL02: "No I haven't. I've thought a little bit about but I want to sit down at some point and actually write a letter to the people of Hawai'i and just thank them for the privilege they've given me during the past eight years. There are few areas I'm very proud of, such as energy security and independence for Hawai'i - getting us on the right track . We have really transformed the way people look at our energy future. The utilities came on board as did the legislature and the private sector and I think we've made tremendous strides there. Another area I really hope the focus stays on is STEM education for the children - Science and Technology education . This is going to be critical in the years ahead. In order to compete, children are going to have to be much more proficient in math and in science. And, finally, I think what we've done with the Department of Hawaiian Homelands will long be remembered - of taking an agency that really just had performed at a very level and really moving that forward in a very big way. Not only the Department of Hawaiian Homelands excel, but they were a priority for our entire administration. I think most people will remember that we went through the biggest economic and fiscal crisis in our state's history and we've come out on the other end and things are starting to turn around - I feel very good about that - having led our state during such a difficult period and be able to get through it and still be in fairly good with unemployment the sixth lowest in the nation. Even though I feel there's still far too many peopl out of work, still trying to make ends meet - we're much better off than most of the Country and again I think we're starting to turn the corner.

(ON-CAM TAG) JUST A REMINDER THAT ELECTION DAY IS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER SECOND. YOU CAN VOTE THAT DAY AT THE PRECINCT NOTED ON YOUR YELLOW CARD - OR YOU CAN WALK IN AND VOTE IN ADVANCE IN THE MAUI COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE ON THE SEVENTH FLOOR OF THE COUNTY BUILDING IN WAILUKU. AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ELECTION NIGHT WHEN MANA'O RADIO'S KATHY COLLINS AND I ANCHOR THE ELECTION RETURNS LIVE ON AKAKU, MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION ON CHANNELS 52, 53 AND 54 - AND STREAMED LIVE ON THE WEB AT AKAKU-DOT-ORG.

(PINK PADDLERS) (PiP-PINK RIBBON)

J: IT MUST HAVE LOOKED LIKE A GIANT BLUR OF ORANGE, YELLOW AND PINK WHEN A FLOTILLA OF CANOES HEADED ACROSS THE AUAU CHANNEL LAST SATURDAY FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL PADDLE FOR LIFE EVENT.

(TAKE PINK PADDLER PKG)

(ON-CAM TAG) THERE ARE EVEN MORE PHOTOS ON THE PACIFIC CANCER FOUNDATION WEBSITE - EVEN VIDEO. IF YOU'D LIKE TO SEE THEM, OR LEARN HOW TO SIGN UP A TEAM FOR NEXT YEAR'S EVENT, GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, PAUL JANES-BROWN SAYS THERE'S A NEW AND VERY FUNNY LIVE PLAY IN SOUTH MAUI YOU NEED TO SEE. PLUS, WE'LL HAVE A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS, COMING ATTRACTIONS - AND, WE'LL PONDER THE QUESTION, "WHAT DO YOU HAPPENS IN THE HEREAFTER?" LOTS MORE AHEAD ON WHEN MAUI TV NEWS.

(C-BLOCK)

(SPORTS)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THERE'S JUST ONE MORE WEEK TO GO IN THE 20-10 MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE FOOTBALL SEASON. THE BALDWIN BEARS REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT SIX AND O IN DIVISION ONE AND HAVE CLINCHED THEIR DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP. LIKEWISE, STALWARTS UNDER THE BIG "L", LAHAINALUNA HAS CLINCHED THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF DIVISION TWO WITH THEIR FIVE AND ONE RECORD. THIS WEEKEND THE MAUI HIGH SABERS HOST BALDWIN FOR THEIR HOMECOMING GAME AT 7 P.M. SATURDAY. EARLIER ON SATURDAY, NA ALII OF KING KEKAULIKE TRAVEL TO TAKE ON THE LUNAS AT THE IMU. KICKOFF IS SET FOR 2-30.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP - PJB)

J: PRO ARTS IS BACK AND THIS TIME THEY ARE FRACTURING ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED FABLES, THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES WITH A NEW MUSICAL VERSION ADAPTED AND PRODUCED BY JONATHAN LEHMAN AND DOUG KENDRICK, PAUL JANES-BROWN VISITED THE LITTLE THEATER AT AZEKA MAKAI AND HAS THIS REVIEW…

PJB: THE THEATER MAY BE SMALL, I’D PREFER TO CALL IT INTIMATE, BUT THERE IS NOTHING SMALL ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION…PRO ARTS CONTINUES TO BE THOROUGHLY PROFESSIONAL IN EVERY WAY; PRODUCTION VALUES; MUSIC, COSTUMES, SETS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE QUALITY OF THE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE. THEY HIRE OUR BEST ACTORS AND BRING OUT THE BEST IN THEM. THEIR FORMULA OF ONE HOUR SHOWS GEARED FOR FAMILY AUDIENCES IS A WINNER ALL THE WAY.

FROM START TO FINISH THIS IS A LAUGH RIOT. DALE BUTTON CREATES A FASHIONISTA EMPEROR SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TIM GUNN AND HEIDI KLUM. HE CANNOT WEAR THE SAME THING TWICE AND IS CONSTANTLY SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING NEW TO DAZZLE HIS HAPLESS KINGDOM OF BOONDOGGLE. WHEN HE IS THREATENED BY WAR FROM THE NEIGHBORING TRANSYLVANIA, HIS BIGGEST DILEMMA IS WHAT TO WEAR? THIS OBSESSION CAUSES HIM TO IGNORE THE PROBLEMS OF HIS EMPIRE SUCH AS FLOODS, FAMINES, UNEMPLOYMENT, ETC MUCH TO THE FRUSTRATION OF HIS MINISTER MUNSTER; THERE’S A HILARIOUS BIT ON HIS NAME. ROLAND K. HARPER DOES A VERY NICE TURN IN THIS ROLE. AS THE EMPEROR’S SECRETARY, THE SCHEMING LADY JANE HATHAWAY, IS THE MARVELOUS KRISTI SCOTT AND ROUNDING OUT THE ROYAL FAMILY IS MARIGOLD THE EMPEROR’S DAUGHTER PLAYED HILARIOUSLY BY THE CLUELESS YUMI NUMATA WHO SEEMS TO BE CHANNELING JUDY HOLIDAY.

ONE OF THE MUSICAL HIGH POINTS OF THE SHOW IS A DUET BETWEEN SCOTT AND NUMATA BASED ON THE GREAT TUNE FROM CALL ME MADAM “YOU’RE JUST IN LOVE.” IT FEATURES A COUNTERPOINT DUET THAT EVERYONE OF A CERTAIN AGE WILL RECOGNIZE.

THE UNSCRUPULOUS TAILORS ARE TWO ESCAPED CONVICTS ROWAN AND MARTIN TOM ALTHOUSE AND CAMERON SPARKS RESPECTIVELY. ALTHOUSE IS THE BRAINS OF THE OPERATION AND SPARKS IS…SHALL WE SAY NOT…HIS CHARACTER HAS A RUNNING JOKE THROUGHOUT THE SHOW WHERE HE SPOUTS REDUNDANCIES SUCH AS, “IT’S UNIQUE, ONE OF A KIND.” WHEN IT IS POINTED OUT…HE NEVER GETS IT. SPARKS IS GROWING IN EVERY PART HE PLAYS FOR THIS COMPANY AND IS DEFINITELY AN ACTOR TO WATCH.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS IS A CIRCULAR SOLILOQUY WHERE EACH OF THE ACTORS SHARES HIS/HER THOUGHTS IN TURN. IT’S A BRILLIANT TWIST ON THE OLD THEATRICAL CONVENT ION AND WORKS BEAUTIFULLY.

WE ALL KNOW THE PLOT, BUT IN TYPICAL PRO ARTS FASHION IT IS TWISTED INTO CONTEMPORANEOUS IMAGES; FROM BURGER KING AND TACO BELL TO WAYNE DYER. NOTHING ESCAPES THE VORPAL BLADE OF LEHMAN AND KENDRICK AND IT’S ALL GOOD FUN.

BUT OF COURSE, LIKE ALL OF THESE TALES THERE’S A LESSON TO BE LEARNED AND IN TRUE PRO ARTS FASHION, THE BIBLICAL ENTREATY “AND A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM” IS EMPLOYED HERE AS WELL. IT’S THE CHILDREN WHO POINT OUT THE EMPEROR’S “PROBLEM.” AND THE FINALE “BE YOURSELF” THAT EVERYONE OF A CERTAIN AGE WILL RECOGNIZE FROM A FORGETTABLE FILM BUT AN UNFORGETTABLE DUET BY JUDY GARLAND AND GENE KELLY IS GREAT AND SENDS THE AUDIENCE OUT TO MEET AND GREET THE PERFORMERS ON A TRUE HIGH AND THE LYRICS WILL STICK WITH YOU.

CARO WALKER HAS PAINTED A NEW, BACKDROP. KATHLEEN SCHULZ HAS CREATED SOME FABULOUS FROCKS AND EVEN BROUGHT BACK A COUPLE OF TRISTAN FONG’S SOME MAY RECOGNIZE FROM MAUI’S BEST EVER MUSICAL THE YESTON KOPPIT PHANTOM FROM A FEW YEARS BACK. MARTI KLUTH HAS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN THE MUSIC.

INCIDENTALLY, BESIDES THE MUSIC, THE PRO ARTS PRODUCERS HAVE TEAMED UP WITH ARTISTS LESLIE GRANAT, JEFFERSON STILLWELL AND LAURNA MALKOVICH TURNING THE THEATER INTO A GALLERY AS WELL FOR PATRONS TO ENJOY PRIOR TO THE SHOW. THE WORKS ARE FOR SALE.

THE SHOW PLAYS WEEKENDS THROUGH OCTOBER 31; FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENINGS AT 7:30 PM, SATURDAYS AT 4 PM, AND SUNDAYS AT 1 AND 4 PM. DON’T MISS IT. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO MAUITVNEWS.COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS.

(HEREAFTER)(PiP-HEREAFTER POSTER)

J: CLINT EASTWOOD'S LATEST FILM DEBUTS THIS WEEKEND AND MAUI HAS A STARRING ROLE. IT'S A SHAME IT HAD TO BE AT THE COST OF DESTROYING MOST OF LAHAINA.

(TAKE HEREAFTER PKG) TUESDAY THIS WEEK WAS A SNEAK PEEK PREVIEW FOR MAUI CAST AND CREW OF THE CLINT EASTWOOD FILM. CHIVO CHING JOHNSON WAS THERE AND CAUGHT UP WITH SOME OF THE EXCITED LOCALS.

Calvin Kuamoo, Prouction Assistant

NINE YEAR-OLD JESSICA GRIFFITHS AND HER MOM HAD FEATURED SPEAKING PARTS IN THE FILM, AS DID MAUI ACTRESS CYNDI MAYO-DAVIS.

Cyndi Mayo-Davis, Actress

AFTER A FEW PHOTO-OPS, IT WAS INTO THE THEATER FOR A PREVIEW. THE REST OF US WILL HAVE TO WAIT...BUT NOT LONG, THE MOVIE OPENS THIS WEEKEND.

(ON-CAM TAG) INDUSTRY INSIDERS SAY THE SPECIAL EFFECTS IN THIS MOVIE WERE AS COMPLICATED AND TECHNICAL AS ANY IN STAR WARS, AVATAR AND 2012...A DEPARTURE FROM ANYTHING EASTWOOD HAS EVER DONE. THE CRITICS LOVE THE FILM. TIME WILL TELL IF AUDIENCES DO TOO.
