J: IT'S A VACATIONER'S DREAM - AND THE INDUSTRY'S HEADACHE: HAVING A RESORT ALMOST TO YOURSELF. WE'VE GOT THE LATEST OCCUPANCY TRENDS - THAT ARE BEGGING TO SHOW SOLID SIGNS OF HOPE

AND, SPEAKING OF HOPE, THESE BRAVE AND BEAUTIFUL WOMEN ARE LAUNCHING ON A VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A CURE. WE'LL MEET THEM THIS WEEK.

THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK, PLUS HALF A WORLD AWAY, HAWAI'I CELEBRATES AS OUR FIRST-EVER SAINT IS ABOUT TO BE CANONIZED. WE'VE GOT SPORTS AND A FULLY-STOCKED WEEK OF COMING ATTRACTIONS AHEAD THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN THIS WEEK TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING. WHILE WE'RE ALL GETTING A LITTLE WEARY OF THE GLASS BEING HALF-EMPTY, ECONOMICALLY SPEAKING, THE LATEST NUMBERS SHOW WHERE IT'S FINALLY BEGINNING TO FILL UP AGAIN....IF JUST A LITTLE

(TURN TO CAM) THEY ONLY STARTED KEEPING RECORDS ON YEAR-TO-YEAR TRENDS IN HOTEL OCCUPANCY IN HAWAI'I IN 1987. AND - IN THAT TIME SPAN, THERE'S NEVER BEEN A WORSE SUMMER THAN THE ONE WE JUST HAD.

(TAKE HOTEL OCCUPANCY PKG) IT WAS AN ELEVENTH HOUR REPRIEVE THAT KEPT THE DOORS OPEN AT THE FORMER MAUI PRINCE HOTEL - NOW KNOWN AS THE MAKENA BEACH AND GOLF RESORT. BUT THE PROBLEMS THERE THAT ALMOST LOCKED UP THE PLACE FOR GOOD WERE EMBLEMATIC OF THE KINDS OF CHALLENGES FACING RESORTS ACROSS HAWAI'I.

THE NEWEST REPORT FROM HOSPITALITY ADVISORS, A HONOLULU INDUSTRY MONITORING SERVICE, INDICATE THAT THIS PAST SUMMER WAS THE WORST SINCE THEY STARTED KEEPING RECORDS 22 YEARS AGO. IN FACT, STATEWIDE, HOTEL OCCUPANCY HAS DROPPED FOR 18 MONTHS IN A ROW. THE NUMBERS FALL IN LINE WITH OTHER FALLING NUMBERS. SPECIFICALLY, THE AMOUNT OF REVENUE GENERATED PER AVAILABLE ROOM WAS DOWN NEARLY 16 PERCENT FROM THIS TIME LAST YEAR. VISITOR SPENDING IS ALSO DOWN BY A SIMILAR AMOUNT. AND, OVERALL, THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY PER VISITOR WAS ALSO DOWN.

SO, WHERE'S THE GOOD NEWS? THERE'S NOT MUCH - BUT THERE ARE A FEW ENCOURAGING SIGNS. ON MAUI, OCCUPANCY FOR AUGUST WAS 66.2 PERCENT. WHILE IT'S LESS THAN THE 70.9 PERCENT OCCUPANCY LEVEL ON O'AHU - AUGIST REPRESENTED A SIGNIFICANT JUMP FROM LAST MAY - WHEN MAUI HOTELS AND RESORTS FELL TO JUST 55 PERCENT OCCUPANCY. AND MAUI CONTINUES TO DEMAND - AND GET - THE HIGHEST REVENUE PER AVAILABLE ROOM IN THE STATE. FROM LUXURY TO ECONOMY, VISITORS ARE PAYING NEARLY TWICE AS MUCH FOR THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING ON MAUI OVER ANY OTHER ISLAND. AND, OCCUPANCY RATES FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUIST IN WAILEA AND IN KA'ANAPALI, KAPALUA AND LAHAINA WERE ACTUALLY UP COMPARED TO AUGUST OF 2008.

IT'S NOT MUCH TO CHEER ABOUT, BUT IT SURE BEATS THE ALTERNATIVE.

(DAMIEN CELEBRATION)(PiP-ST. DAMIEN)

J: MORE THAN 350 HAWAI'I RESIDENTS - INCLUDING 11 SURVIVORS OF HANSEN’S DISEASE WHO STILL LIVE AT KALAUPAPA -ARE IN BELGIUM NOW AND WILL BE IN ROME THIS SUNDAY FOR A FIRST-EVER EVENT OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS AMONG CATHOLICS IN OUR STATE - THE CANONIZATION OF MOLOKAI'S SERVANT, FATHER DAMIEN

(TAKE DAMIEN PKG) BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, THAT NUMBER HAD SWELLED TO MORE THAN 500 - INCLUDING HAWAII'S LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR - WHO TOOK VACATION TIME AND PAID HIS OWN TRAVEL EXPENSES JUST TO BE THERE WHEN THIS HISTORIC OCCASION CAME TO PASS.

THE LOCAL CONTINGENT TOURED THE STREETS OF TREMELO BELGIUM THIS WEEK, EN ROUTE TO A APECIAL MASS CELEBRATING THE LAIFE OF THE TOWN'S MOST FAMNOUS NATIVE SON.

ONE LOCAL MAN, DAMIAN ERALY PORTRAYED THE SOON-TO-BE SAINT IN A DRAMATIC PLAY. THE RESEMBLANCE IS NOT A CONCIDENCE, ERALY IS A DESCENDANT OF DAMIEN'S FAMILY.

THE SO-CALLED MIRACLE WOMAN, AUDREY TOGUCHI, WHO PRAYED THROUGH DAMIEN AND WAS CURED OF CANCER, POSED WITH A STATUE SHOWING THE KALAUPAPA SHEPHERD IN THE LATE STAGES OF HIS OWN BATTLE WITH LEPROSY.

AFTER THE SPECIAL MASS, BELGIAN FLAG TWIRLERS PERFORMED FOR THE ASSEMBLED MULTITUDE.

MOLOKA'I RESIDENT KUMU LEIMOMI HO WAS AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE SERVICES. AND THE BIRTHPLACE OF DAMIEN IS ALSO CELEBRATING IN THEIR OWN SPECIAL WAY.

IN THE BACKGROUND ON DAMIEN STREET IS THE HOME IN WHICH FATHER DAMIEN WAS BORN AND - TREMELO IS ALSO KNOWN FOR IT'S BEERS - AND A SPECIAL SERIES OF DAMIEN ALES HAVE BEEN BOTTLED TO HONOR THEIR NATIVE SON.

(ON-CAM TAG) DAMIEN WILL BE ONE OF FOUR SAINTS CANONIZED AT SUNDAY'S MORNING AT THE VATICAN. OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS, RELICS FROM SAINT DAMIEN WILL BE CARRIED ACROSS EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES, THEN HERE TO HAWAI'I. IN FACT, DAMIEN'S RELICS WILL TRAVEL THROUGH MAUI EN ROUTE TO THEIR FINAL RESTING PLACE ON O'AHU. OCTOBER 24TH IS THE DAY THAT SERVICES AND CELEBRATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE HERE. FOR DETAILS ON WHEN AND WHERE, VISIT MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(PINK PADDLERS)(PiP-PINK PADDLERS)

J: IF YOU'RE A TRIVIA BUFF, YOU MAY KNOW THAT THE OFFICIAL COLOR OF THE ISLAND OF MAUI IS PINK. YOU MAY ALSO KNOW THAT OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY OF THIS PAST WEEKEND'S N-F-L GAMES FEATURED BIG STRONG MEN IN PINK SHOES, PINK SWEATBANDS AND PINK SHOELACES. AND YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK WHEN YOU SHOP AT SAFEWAY...THERE'S SOMETHING PINK. HOPEFULLY, YOU'RE GETTING THE POINT.

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THE DEVASTATING TRAGEDIES IN SAMOA AND THE PHILIPPINES OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS REMIND US THAT IT COULD ALL JUST AS EASILY HAPPEN HERE. UP NEXT, TIPS FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS ON ONE AREA OF PREPAREDNESS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF. AND, THERE'S BEEN ANOTHER MERMAID SIGHTING IN WAILEA...AND SHE'S A STUNNING BEAUTY . THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(RED CROSS-SAFE AND WELL)(PiP-RED CROSS-SAMOA)

J: NEARLY A HUNDRED RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO THE QUAKE, TSUNAMI AND TYPHOON-RAVAGED AREAS OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC. FIFTEEN OF THOSE VOLUNTEERS ARE FROM HAWAI'I.

(FF-CG-VO) THIS WEEK ANOTHER BATCH OF 11 FLEW TO AMERICAN SAMOA. WHILE THERE, THESE VOLUNTEERS WILL ASSIST VICTIMS WITH MEDICAL ATTENTION, CRISIS COUNSELING, DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND GENERAL DUTIES INCLUDING ASSEMBLING FAMILIES AT SHELTERS, AND MANNING THE SHELTERS THEMSELVES.

(ON-CAM) BUT ONE OF THE MOST VITAL FUNCTIONS SERVED BY THE RED CROSS IS ALSO SOMETHING WE SHOULD ALL BE THINKING ABOUT IN THE EVENT DISASTER STRIKES HAWAII WHEN LOVED ONES FAR AWAY WILL WANT TO KNOW HOW WE'RE DOING. IT'S CALLED "SAFE AND WELL."

(FF-CG-VO) THE AMERICAN RED CROSS SAFE AND WELL WEBSITE IS AN EASY-TO-USE INTERNET TOOL THAT LETS FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES KNOW HOW YOU'RE DOING AFTER AN EMERGENCY. RED CROSS SHELTERS WITH INTERNET ACCESS, WHENEVER POSSIBLE, WILL GIVE SHELTER INHABITANTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO FILL IN THE ONLINE FORM. BUT AFTER A CRISIS, IF YOU CAN GET ONLINE, YOU CAN DO THE SAME THING FROM HOME. YOU SIMPLY LOG ON TO RED CROSS-DOT-ORG AND CLICK ON "LIST MYSELF AS SAFE AND WELL." YOU CAN SELECT FROM A LIST OF PRE-SCRIPTED MESSAGES THAT WILL BE VIEWED BY LOVED ONES INCLUDING, "I AM SAFE AND WELL." OR "I'M SAFE IN A SHELTER" OR "I WILL CALL WHEN I CAN."

(ON-CAM) IT'S A FREE SERVICE THAT OFFERS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE THINGS POSSIBLE AFTER A DISASTER - THE PEACE OF MIND THAT SOMEONE YOU KNOW AND LOVE IS SAFE. FOR DETAILS ON THE SYSTEM, GO TO RED CROSS-DOT-ORG.

(WAILEA MERMAID)(PiP-MERMAID)

J: AS LONG AS THERE HAVE BEEN SAILORS, THERE HAVE BEEN TALES OF MERMAIDS. IN ANCIENT HAWAI'I, SHE WAS THE MO'O, A GODDESS AND A LIZARD...IN 2009, SHE IS THE EMBODIMENT OF ALL THAT IS FANTASTIC. AND SATURDAY NIGHT, SHE WAS UNVEILED AT THE GRAND WAILEA.

(TAKE MERMAID PKG) A CROWD OF MORE THAN 100 GATHERED IN THE GRAND LOBBY OF THE GRAND WAILEA TO SEE THE UNVEILING OF A NEW WORK OF ART BY DALE ZARRELLA. A NEARBY POWER POINT CHRONICLED THE 20-MONTH EFFORT IT TOOK TO CONVERT A SHOWER TREE THAT USED TO SHADE AH FOOKS SUPERMARKET IN KAHULUI, INTO KIHAWAHINA - A M'O OF TREMENDOUS POWER AND MEANING.

AFTER SOME OPENING REMARKS FROM RESORT MANAGER MATT BAILEY AND CHANTS BY UNLES LESLIE KULOLOIO, THE UNVEILING TOOK PLACE. THEN ZARRELLA ANNOINTED THE MERMAID WITH WATER TO FORVER BOND HER TO THE SEA.

SCULPTOR, PAINTER, CARVER DALE ZARRELLA TOOK A GOOD LONG WHILE TO VISUALIZE THEN TAKE ON THIS 3,000POUND WORK OF ART. THE SHOWER TREE STUMP THAT SAT IN HIS YARD FOREVER.

Dale Zarrella, Artist

DZ01:" You know I had it in my yard for five years. I would look at it - have my cup of coffee early in the morning as the sun was rising. That's part of the magic of it - when the vision comes it comes. There's nio use forcing it - rushing it. Five years it sat in my yard and one morning at six in the morning - I remember it so distinctly, I saw the imnage of the mermaid - basically in this position. Visions come - but vaguely. Yet once I get into the wood, the vision becomes clear and I let it evolve as it wants to."

ONCE THE VISION BEGAN TO TAKE SHAPE, IT TOOK ANOTHER YEAR AND EIGHT MONTHS TO BRING HER TO LIFE...A LIFE THAT EVEN EXCEEDED ZARRELLA'S VISION.

DZ02: "It has evolved over all these months to what it is today. I had imagined a mermaid but this truly has gone far beyond anything I could have dreamed of."

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO SEE HER, YOU CAN'T MISS THE NEWEST OF DALE ZARELLA'S MERMAIDS. SHE'S IN THE GRAND LOBBY OF THE GRAND WAILEA RESORT AND SPA.

(UTILITY RATES)(PiP)

J: UNFORTUNATELY, THERE'S NOTHING FANTASTIC ABOUT IT...IN FACT, IT'S NOT VERY FUN AT ALL - BUT NEXT MONTH THERE WILL BE A SPIKE IN OUR ELECTRIC BILLS.

ON MAUI, THE RATE PER KILOWATT HOUR WILL CLIMB IN OCTOBER TO 26.29 CENTS FROM 25.16 CENTER PER K-W-H. THE TYPICAL ELECTRIC BILL ON MAUI WILL BE 165 DOLLARS AND SEVENTY SIX CENTS. IT'S WORSE ON THE BIG ISLAND, WHERE THEIR HOURLY RATE WILL CLIMB FROM 31.93 CENTS TO 32.54 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR. THE AVERAGE ELECTRIC BILL THERE IS 206 DOLLARS AND 35 CENTS A MONTH. ON KAUA'I, THE HOURLY RATE WILL JUMP MARGINALLY, FROM 32.03 TO 32.07 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR. IT'S CHEAPEST ON O'AHU - WHERE THE HOURLY RATE WILL CLIMB FROM 22.8 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR TO 23.1 CENTS PER KWH.

THE REASON FOR THE CLIMB; THE RECENT SPIKE IN CRUDE OIL PRICES. WHILE GAS PRICES ARE STARTING TO TRICKLE DOWN ON MAUI, THE COST OF OIL LAST MONTH IS WHAT WE'LL BE PAYING HIGHER ELECTRIC PRICES FOR NEXT MONTH.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS - PARITY CONTINUES IN THE M-I-L AS THE TOP SPOT IN BOTH DIVISIONS IS STILL UP FOR GRABS. AND IN COMING ATTRACTIONS IT'S EVERYTHING FROM WALKING AND TALKING TO BIRDS TO P[ADDLING WITH YOUR POOCH. ALL THE DETAILS ON MAUI TV NEWS WHEN WE COME BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: TAKING A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS, LAST WEEKEND THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR PRE-EMPTED FOOTBALL AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM - BUT IT DIDN'T KEEP THE LIGHTS OFF UPCOUNTRY. LAST FRIDAY NIGHT THE BALDWIN BEARS EDGED THE WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA MAUI BY A FINAL SCORE OF 24 TO 21. THEN, SATURDAY NIGHT AT NA ALI'I STADIUM, IT WAS KING KEKAULIKE OVER THE MAUI HIGH SABERS IN A CLOSE ONE BY NINE TO SEVEN IN FRONT OF A CROWD OF ABOUT 3,000. THE WIN PUTS NA ALII IN A TIE WITH BALDWIN FOR THE TOP SPOT IN DIVISION ONE. THIS WEEKEND LAHAINALUNA TAKES ON THE SABERS FRIDAY NIGHT AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. SATURDAY NIGHT, IT'S ANOTHER UPCOUNTRY MATCHUP AS KING KEKAULIKE TRAVELS ACROSS PUKALANI TO TAKE ON THE WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA MAUI. BOTH GAMES START AT 7 P.M.

AND THIS WEEKEND IS THE BIG ONE. THE MEN TAKE ON THE KA IWI CHANNEL FROM HALE A LONO HARBOR ON MOLOKAI ALL THE WAY TO WAIKIKI. IT'S THE MOLOKA'I HOE THIS SUNDAY MORNING.
