J: A DOUBLE WHAMMY, TWO-FISTED PUNCH NEARLY KNOCKS OUT A CRUCIAL MAUI PROGRAM FOR THE HUNGRY. AND, LOOK FOR SOME SERIOUS INCENTIVES TO CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE ENERGY FOR YOUR HOME AND YOUR CAR - FROM THE ELECTRIC COMPANY.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS OUR "GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL" SEGMENT IS BEAUTIFULLY HELD IN MAUI HANDS.

IN SPORTS, O-FOR-FOUR AS THE BALDWIN BEARS GET TRAMPLED BY THE MULES IN THE STATE PLAYOFFS. NOW IT'S THE LUNAS TURN AT A SHOT A GREATNESS. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES-BROWN HEADS TO THE WEST SIDE TO SEE IF THE MAGIC IS STILL THERE WHEN WARREN ISN'T. ALL THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND A MAUI ANIMAL SANCTUARY VIDEO YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS. IT'S ALL AHEAD THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR WATCHING MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING AND THIS IS MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - IN HIGH DEFINITION. IT WASN'T A RAIN STORM OR EVEN A WIND STORM, BUT FROM OUT OF THE BLUE, A CRASHING TREE HAS NEARLY PUT ONE MAUI CHARITY OUT OF BUSINESS.

(TAKE FEED MY SHEEP PKG) SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHILE TWO WORKERS WITH THE FEED MY SHEEP MINISTRY WERE WORKING IN THEIR OFFICE IN PU'UNENE- THEY WERE SHOCKED BY THE THUNDEROUS CRASH OF A HUGE DEAD EUCALYPTUS TREE DOWN ON THEIR BUILDING. NO WIND STORM OR RAIN STORM. IN FACT, JUST THE OPPOSITE. THE DROUGHT AND HARD-PACKED EARTH COMBINED TO BRING THE TREE TO IT'S FINAL RESTING PLACE. ON TOP OF FEED MY SHEEP'S OFFICE, A REFRIGETARTION UNIT AND THREE OF THEIR DELIVERY TRUCKS.

AND IT COULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED AT A WORSE TIME. THIS WEEK - WHILE FEED ME SHEEP CONTINUES TO WORK ON THEIR MISSION PROVIDING UP TO 10 POUNDS OF FEED EACH WEEK TO NEARLY 10,000 OF MAUI'S HUNGRY, THEIR ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DELIVERIES OF SPECIAL TREATS FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE HAVE BEEN SEVERLY CURTAILED. IN FACT, THE IMMEDIATE IMPACT WAS TO SOUTH MAUI - WHERE ONLY HALF OF THEIR FOOD DELIVERIES COULD BE MADE LAST WEEKEND. AND THIS SATURDAY WAS THE SCHEDULE FINAL DELIVERY OF MEALS FOR THANKSGIVING.

NOW - THEY'RE SCRAMBLING. DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT UP TO 75,000 DOLLARS TO FIX THE OFFICE TRAILER, THE REFRIGERATOR AND THE TRUCKS AND WILL TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS. THERE HAS BEEN AN OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY FOR WHICH FEED MY SHEEP OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL - BUT THEY CAN STILL USE MORE HELP - ESPECIALLY MONEY.

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO HELP WITH A DONATION, THEY'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. WE HAVE CONTACT INFORMATION FOR FEED ME SHEEP ON OUR WEBSITE. JUST GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(meco-fit)(PiP-SOLAR PANEL)

J: HAVE YOU MADE OR ARE YOU CONSIDERING MAKING THE DECISION TO SWITCH TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY. IF YOU ARE, THEN THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC COMPANY - THE PARENT COMPANY OF MAUI ELECTRIC - WILL BEGIN TAKING APPLICATIONS FROM CONSUMERS WHO PLAN TO SWITCH TO PROVIDING THEIR OWN POWER. IT'S CALLED A FEED-IN TARIFF AND WHAT IT DOES IS OFFER PRE-ESTABLISHED RATES AND CONTRACT TERMS FOR HOMES AND BUSINESS THAT WANT TO SELL THEIR RENEWABLE POWER TO THE POWER COMPANY.

O'AHU CUSTOMERS BEGAN APPLYING FOR PROJECT APPROVAL THIS WEEK. HERE ON MAUI, APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED STARTING NEXT WEDNESDAY. WHAT YOU'D BE APPLYING FOR IS THE RIGHT TO ACTUALLY BE PAID FOR THE ENERGY YOU PRODUCE. THAT'S DIFFERENT FROM NET-METERING, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO PRODUCE YOUR OWN ENERGY DURING A CERTAIN TIME OF DAY, AND BUILD UP A CREDIT WITH THE UTILITY COMPANY THAT YOU GET TO USE WHEN YOUR ENERGY SOURCE ISN'T PRODUCING - LIKE SOLAR PANELS AT NIGHT.

WHILE MOST FOLKS WILL LIKELY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGY - IT'S NOT THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE FORM OF ALTERNATIVE POWER MECO WILL ACCEPT. OTHER QUALIFYING RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDE CONCENTRATED SOLAR, ON-SHORE WIND AND IN-LINE HYDRO POWER. TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS AND WHAT TO DO, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(MECO - CAR)(PiP-NISSAN LEAF)

J: THE NEW NISSAN LEAF WILL BEGIN APPEARING ON MAUI ROADWAYS IN JANUARY AS WELL AS ON O'AHU. AND YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THAT THE CHEVY VOLT HAS BEEN NAMED MOTOR TREND'S CAR OF THE YEAR FOR 20-11. WELL, THE ELECTRIC COMPANY WILL PLAY A BIG PART IN THE SUCCESS OF EITHER VENTURE AND MAUI ELECTRIC IS IN THAT STORY, TOO. STATEWIDE, 16 HUNDRED CUSTOMERS OF THE HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC COMPANY WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY TO THEIR LOCAL UTILITY TO GET LOWER ELECTRIC RATES TO CHARGE THEIR ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLES DURING NON-PEAK TIMES. NOW, CAN ANYONE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS? NO.

(FF-CG-VO) THE PILOT PROGRAM IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 300 ELECTRIC CAR OWNERS ON MAUI, THE FIRST 300 ON THE BIG ISLAND AND THE FIRST 1,000 ON O'AHU. ALSO, CUSTOMERS CAN ONLY QUALIFY IF YOU OWN A HIGHWAY-CAPABLE, FOUR-WHEELED VEHICLE. THE RATES ON MAUI WILL BE ABOUT SEVEN CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR BELOW THE REGULAR RATE IF YOU CHARGE YOUR ELECTRIC CAR BETWEEN 9 P.M. AND 7 A.M.

(ON-CAM) YOU CAN CHARGE YOUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE - OR E.V. - DURING THE DAY, BUT YOU'LL BE CHARGED ABOUT THREE CENTS MORE PER KILOWATT HOUR THAN YOU'RE NOW PAYING THE PILOT PROGRAM WAS APPROVED LAST MONTH BY THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION TO RUN FOR THREE YEARS. OF COURSE, THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION WOULD BE AN ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE ON RENEWABLE ENERGY. DID YOU EVER THINK THAT WOULD HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFETIME?

(ROAD REPAIR $)(PiP-COUNTY SEAL)

J: AND IT'S BEEN MORE THAN A GENERATION SINCE SOME COUNTY HIGHWAYS AND ROADS SHOULD HAVE BEEN IMPROVED - BUT HAVEN'T. AND THE REASON THEY HAVEN'T IS THAT DEVELOPERS AND HOMEOWNERS WHO PROMISED TO PAY FOR ROADWORK - IN EXCHANGE FOR PERMITS TO BUILD SMALL SUBDIVISIONS - HAVEN'T

IN A MAUI NEWS ARTICLE THIS WEEK, COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER JOANNE JOHNSON SAID SHE HOPED HER SUCCESSORS ON THE COUNCIL WOULD HOLD FEET TO THE FIRE FOR THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OWED THE COUNTY FOR ROAD BUILDING AND IMPROVEMENT. FROM 1974 UNTIL 2007 THERE HAVE BEEN AS MANY AS 18-HUNDRED SO-CALLED "DEFERRAL AGREEMENTS" WHERE, IN EXCHANGE FOR APPROVAL OF SMALL SUBDIVISIONS, HOMEOWNERS OR DEVELOPERS COULD EITHER DO THE ADJACENT ROAD IMPROVEMENTS, OR PAY THE COUNTY TO DO THEM - DEFERRING PAYMENT UNTIL THE WORK MIGHT ACTUALLY BE DONE. NOW THE LAW SAYS THE PROPERTY OWNERS HAVE TO PAY FOR THE WORK.

THE "CATCH-22" IN ALL THIS IS THAT THERE'S NO SYSTEM IN PLACE TO COLLECT THE MONEY. AND HOW MUCH ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? THE ESTIMATE, ACCORDING TO COUNCILMEMBER JOHNSON, COULD BE MILLIONS AND MILLIONS...AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OWED TO MAUI COUNTY.

(MORTGAGE STORE)(PiP-BANKRUPTCY)

J: SPEAKING OF OWING MONEY, THIS WEEK A FEDERAL RELEASE SHOWED THAT A KIHEI-BASED BUSINESS HAS FILED FOR CHAPTER SEVEN BANKRUPTCY LIQUIDATION. IN THE PROCESS, THE FILING SHOWS THAT THE MORTGAGE STORE OWES MONEY TO ABOUT 100 MAUI RESIDENTS. A LOT. MORE THAN 10 MILLION DOLLARS. THE COMPANY OPENED IN 1996 AND, ACCORDING TO THEIR ATTORNEY, DID A LOT MORE INVESTING BUSINESS THAN THEY DID MORTGAGE BUSINESS. THEIR CHAPTER SEVEN FILING SHOWS ASSETS OF 14 MILLION DOLLARS AND LIABILITIES ABOUT 700,000 DOLLARS MORE THAN THAT. THE ATTORNEY SAYS THAT THEIR CREDITORS SHOULD GET A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF THEIR MONEY BACK - BUT LIKELY NOT ALL OF IT.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THE BEAUTY OF ART HAS - VERY CAPABLY - BEEN IN "MAUI HANDS" FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES. OUR GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL SEGMENT TRAVELS TO PA'IA TO TAKE IN THE BEAUTY OF MAUI HANDS UP NEXT. PLUS, TALK ABOUT BEAUTIFUL! THERE'S A PLACE IN HAIKU WHERE CRITTERS OF ALL TYPES - INCLUDING HUMANS - ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. WE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE LEILANI FARM SANCTUARY WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL-MAUI HANDS)(PiP-GCTL LOGO)

J: WITH THE HOLIDAYS ALMOST UPON US, THIS LOOKS LIKE THE YEAR THAT “BUYING LOCAL” WILL BE HOT. THIS WEEK ON OUR GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! REPORT, WE TAKE YOU TO A PLACE WHERE ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL PASS THROUGH “MAUI HANDS.”

(Take GCTL-Maui Hands Pkg)

(ON-CAM TAG): THERE ARE MORE THAN 200 BUSINESSES THAT BELONG TO MAUI COUNTY’S HUGELY SUCCESSFUL “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” CAMPAIGN. FOR A LIST OF PARTICIPATING BUSINESSES AND THE INCREDIBLE DEALS THEY OFFER, GO TO MAUI-COUNTY-THINK-LOCAL-DOT-COM.

(fALSE kILLERS ENDANGERED)(PiP-FKW)

J: THEY'RE AMONG THE RAREST DOLPHINS ON EARTH AND MOST PEOPLE WHO'VE EVER SEEN OR HEARD OF THE DON'T EVEN CALL THEM DOLPHINS. THEY'RE FALSE KILLER WHALES, AND THEY'RE ON THE PATH OF BEING DECLARED ENDANGERED.

(FF-CG-VO) THERE ARE AS FEW 150 TO 170 OF THE UNIQUE MAMMALS IN WATERS AROUND HAWAI'I - AND THEY'RE DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER FALSE KILLER WHALE POPULATIONS IN THE WORLD. THEY DON'T REALLY LOOK LIKE WHALES - EXCEPT FOR THE ROUND HEAD - BUT THE NAME JUST KINDA STUCK.

(ON-CAM) THE NATIONAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL MADE THE RECOMMENDATION LAST YEAR AND THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICES PLANS TO TAKE UP THE MATTER AT THEIR JANUARY 20TH MEETING IN HONOLULU. SCIENTISTS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THESE DOLPHINS BECAUSE OF LONG-LINE FISHING SNAGS BUT ALSO BECAUSE THERE ARE NOW SO FEW OF THEM THAT INBREEDING COULD JEOPARDIZE THE BLOODLINE.

(MPD-TRAFFIC FATALITIES)(PiP-MPD LOGO)

J: IT WAS HUMAN TRAGEDY THIS WEEK ON MAUI. A MAN - WITH NO KNOWN LOCAL ADDRESS - BECAME THE COUNTY'S 12TH TRAFFIC FATALITY OF 20-10. IT HAPPENED MONDAY NIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF WHARF STREET AND KA'AHUMANU AVENUE IN KAHULUI. A 49 YEAR-OLD MAN WAS IN THE ROADWAY WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A CAR HEADED TOWARD WAILUKU. THE MAN WAS TAKEN TO MAUI MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER WHERE HE DIED FROM HIS INJURIES.

IF THERE'S ANY KIND OF A SILVER LINING TO A STORY LIKE THIS - IT'S THAT AT THIS TIME LAST YEAR, THERE WERE 20 TRAFFIC FATALITIES. THE TRAFFIC DIVISION AT THE MAUI POLICE DEPARTMENT GAVE US THESE DETAILS.

(TAKE MPD FATALS PKG) LAST YEAR 21 PEOPLE DIED ON MAUI ROADWAYS IN 18 FATAL COLLISSIONS. MAUI POLICE SAY THAT 11 OF THOSE DEADLY CRASHES - OR 61 PERCENT - INVOLVED ALCOHOL. SO FAR THIS YEAR, OF THE TWELVE FATAL CRASHES FIVE, OR 41 PERCENT OF THE INCIDENTS INVOLVED ALCOHOL AS AN IMPAIRMENT. EVEN THOUGH THE NUMBER IS DOWN - SIGNIFICANTLY - IT IS GLARINGLY CLEAR THAT DRINKING AND DRIVING ARE A DEADLY COMBINATION.

(ON-CAM TAG) THE TRAFFIC SECTION - WITH THE SUPPORT OF MPD CHIEF GARY YABUTA - WILL BE FILLING VACANCIES IN THEIR D.U.I. TASK FORCE TO ADDRESS IMPAIRED DRIVING. WITH THE HOLIDAYS UPON US, MAUI POLICE WILL CONTINUE TO ENFORCE D.U.I. ISSUES WITH CHECKPOINTS AROUND MAUI COUNTY. THEY ALSO TOLD MAUI TV NEWS THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO ENFORCE SEATBELT AND CAR SEAT VIOLATIONS - AS WELL AS CELL PHONE USE, WHICH - AS YOU'VE LIKELY SEEN ON OUR ROADWAYS - HAS BEEN CREEPING BACK UP AGAIN.

THE BOTTOM LINE, THEY SAY, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. BUCKLE UP. AND WHEN YOU'RE BEHIND THE WHEEL, DEVOTE YOUR ATTENTION TO YOUR DRIVING.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THE BEARS HAVE BEEN STYMIED BY THE MULES FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR. CAN THE LUNAS BREAK THE CURSE AND KEEP THE MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE IN THE STATE FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS? WE'LL SEE. PLUS, PAUL JANES BROWN WAS CURIOUS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE WARREN AND ANNABELLE SHOW...WITHOUT WARREN. HIS REVIEW IS UP NEXT IN CURTAIN CALL WHEN MAUI TV NEWS COMES BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, THEY EACH HAVE FOUR LEGS AND IN THE WILD, THE BEARS WOULD WIN AT LEAST SOME OF THE TIME - BUT NOT WHEN YOU MAKE 'EM WEAR CLEATS. FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT SEASON-ENDING YEAR, THE BALDWIN BEARS DROPPED THEIR SHOT AT THE PLAYOFFS TO THE MULES OF O'AHU'S LEILEIHUA HIGH SCHOOL. THE FINAL SCORE LAST FRIDAY NIGHT IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE STATE PLAYOFFS WAS 35 TO 26. LEILEHUA FACES SAINT LOUIS HIGH FROM O'AHU THIS WEEKEND. MEANWHILE, THE LUNAS OF LAHAINALUNA HAD A FIRST-ROUND BYE IN DIVISION TWO THIS WEEKEND THEY FACE KAIMUKI. THAT GAME IS HERE ON MAUI AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. KICKOFF IS AT 7 P.M.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP-PJB)

J: TWO TIMES EACH NIGHT FOR SIX DAYS A WEEK WARREN GIBSON PERFORMS A TWO HOUR STAND UP ACT ALONG WITH REMARKABLE SLEIGHT OF HAND MAGIC IN LAHAINA AT WARREN AND ANNABELLE’S. BUT EVEN MAGICIANS NEED TO RECHARGE THEIR BATTERIES AND WHEN WARREN IS AWAY JOHN SHYROCK AND DANA DANIELS COME IN TO PINCH HIT. PAUL JANES-BROWN WENT OUT TO SEE HOW THE SUBS MEASURE UP. HE HAS THIS REVIEW...

PJB: LIKE ALL SUPER STARS IT TAKES MORE THAN ONE TO FILL GIBSON’S FORMIDABLE SHOES. BUT THAT SHOULD NOT DETER ANYONE FROM TAKING A TRIP OUT TO THE ESTIMABLE PARLOUR, LOUNGE AND MAGIC THEATER ON FRONT STREET IN LAHAINA. NOTHING IS AMISS IN THE PRE-MAGIC EXPERIENCE. ANNABELLE STILL RIDDLES THE PATRONS INTO HER PARLOUR. THE ROYAL FLUSH PACKAGE, WHICH I HEARTILY RECOMMEND, GETS A HEFTY SELECTION OF PUPU, I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE COCONUT BATTERED SHRIMP WITH A PONZU DIPPING SAUCE AND POLYNESIAN CHICKEN SATAY WITH TROPICAL PLUM SAUCE, ALONG WITH TWO DRINKS, DESSERT AND THE SHOW INCLUDING YOUR SERVER’S GRATUITY FOR UNDER A HUNDRED DOLLARS AND THEY VALIDATE FOUR HOURS OF YOUR PARKING. SUCH A DEAL.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT ANNABELLE IS PARTICULARLY EBULLIENT, RESPONDING MUSICALLY TO QUESTIONS AND ACCURATELY FIELDING AUDIENCE REQUESTS FROM THE WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE TO THE THEME FROM GILLIGAN’S ISLAND. HOWEVER, WHEN THE AUDIENCE WAS SLOW TO COME UP WITH A REQUEST, ANNABELLE WENT ON HER MERRY WAY ENTERTAINING WITH SUCH CHESTNUTS AS THE THEME CHARLIE BROWN’S CHRISTMAS BY VINCE GIRALDI AND YIP HARBURGH’S SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. IT WAS A MARVELOUS DISPLAY OF NEW FOUND VIRTUOSITY BY THE PIANISTIC POLTERGEIST.

AS ALWAYS, THE STAFF ARE ATTENTIVE, PROFESSIONAL AND EAGER TO PLEASE. I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT NEITHER CHAD NOR JOEY FAVORED US WITH A SONG, BUT, OF COURSE, THE MAGIC SHOW IS WHAT WE HAVE COME FOR AND JOHN SHYROCK AND DANA DANIELS DON’T DISAPPOINT IN ANY WAY.

SHYROCK, WHO OPENS UP THE TWO HOUR SHOW, IS MORE LIKE GIBSON. HE EVEN DOES SEVERAL OF GIBSON’S MAGIC AND MONOLOGUES AND BEARS A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE TO GIBSON; RIGHT DOWN TO THE ROLLED UP SLEEVES TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE THAT NOT ONLY IS THERE NOTHING UP HIS SLEEVES THEY AREN’T EVEN LONG ENOUGH TO HIDE ANYTHING. SHYROCK IS PARTICULARLY EXCELLENT WITH THE CARDS AND THE COINS.

WHEN IT COMES TO WARMING UP AN AUDIENCE, FAMILIARITY BREEDS BONDING NOT CONTEMPT. LIKE WARREN, SHYROCK EMPLOYS GEOGRAPHICAL PATTER TO CEMENT THE PERFORMER AUDIENCE RELATIONSHIP. ONE OF MY FAVORITES WAS HOW CANADA WAS NAMED. SHYROCK TELLS US, “THEY THREW ALL THE LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET INTO A HAT AND DREW THEM OUT ONE AT A TIME, “C EH- A EH-N – EH D-EH.”

THE MOST HEAD SCRATCHING MOMENT CAME WHEN SHYROCK WENT ACROSS AN ENTIRE ROW IN THE HOUSE. HE ASKED EACH OF THE THIRTEEN PEOPLE HE CALLED ON TO STOP HIM WHILE HE FANNED THOROUGH A DECK OF PLAYING CARDS, AND REMEMBER THE CARD HE SHOWED THEM. THEN HE PROCEEDED TO REVEAL TO EACH PERSON IN REVERSE ORDER, WHAT THEIR CARD WAS. IN ONE, HE CAUSED THE CORRECT CARD TO LEAP FROM THE DECK AND DO TRIPLE FLIPS IN THE AIR. IT WAS ONE OF THOSE HOW’D HE DO THAT MOMENT.

IF SHYROCK IS GIBSON, THEN DANA DANIELS IS A CROSS BETWEEN JUDGE HARRY STONE FROM NIGHT COURT AND STEVE MARTIN RIGHT DOWN TO THE FEDORA. FROM THE MOMENT HE STEPPED ONTO THE STAGE WITH HIS PSYCHIC BIRD DWAYNE, DANIELS DEMONSTRATED A MASTERY OF COMIC TIMING AND EXCELLENT- OFF BEAT MATERIAL. I HAVEN’T LAUGHED SO HARD SINCE THE JUNE TAYLOR-ESQUE DANCE NUMBER IN THE ORIGINAL “PRODUCERS.” MY GUEST AND I BOTH AGREED IT WAS EXHILARATING AND PAINFUL TO BE PUT INTO SUCH PAROXYSMS.

WHILE MUCH OF DANIELS HUMOR WAS SELF-DEPRECATING AND BASED ON THE INEPTITUDE OF THE PSYCHIC BIRD, “IT’S A BIRD” HE KEPT REMINDING US. DANIELS IS ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED MAGICIAN AND JUGGLER AS WELL AS CONSUMMATE STAND UP PERFORMER. HIS MAGIC HAD THE AUDIENCE GASPING IN ASTONISHMENT. PARTICULARLY WHEN HE CALLED OUT FOR SOMEONE TO WRITE DOWN A NUMER BETWEEN 35 AND 99. THEN HE WROTE DOWN WHAT APPEARED TO BE 16 RANDOM NUMBERS. HE ASKED FOR THE NUMBER TO BE REVEALED AND THEN PROCEEDED TO SHOW THAT ACROSS, DOWN, DIAGONALLY, ADDING UP THE SQUARES AND THE CORNERS ALL ADDED UP TO THE NUMBER CHOSEN BY THE AUDIENCE MEMBER. IT WAS REMARKABLE.

I DON’T WANT TO RUIN THE EXPERIENCE FOR YOU. ALL I CAN SAY IS DON’T MISS DANIELS. THIS IS HIS LAST WEEK. HE DEPARTS ON THE 24TH. SHYROCK WILL BE AROUND UNTIL DEC. 3. HE WILL BE JOINED BY CHRIS BLACKMORE WHEN DANIELS DEPARTS.
