J: A WEEK AFTER WORD COMES THAT VISITOR ARRIVALS ARE EXPECTED TO CLIMB NEXT YEAR, THE GOVERNOR WANTS TO YANK MAUI'S SHARE OF THE TRANSIENT ACCOMMODATION TAX THOSE VISITORS PAY. AND PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL IS COMING BACK HOME TO MAUI.

THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK, PLUS A GLIMPSE OF SOME WILD WEATHER AS WE PASS INTO WINTER IN THE TROPICS - AND WE'LL SHOW YOU SOME STAGGERINGLY-BEAUTIFUL ONE OF A KIND GLASS ART PIECES THAT YOU CAN SEE FOR FREE. ALL THAT AND MUCH MORE ON THIS CHRISTMAS EDITION OF MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE - MELE KALIKIMAKA- AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING. ''SHE HAS TO DO SOMETHING." THAT'S ESSENTIALLY THE POSITION OF GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE AS THE STATE FACES A BUDGET SHORTFALL APPROACHING ONE AND A QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS.

(TURN TO CAM) TRANSIENT ACCOMMODATION TAX REFUNDS ARE ONE OF THE TARGETS THAT COUNTIES - ESPECIALLY MAUI COUNTY - HAVE BEEN KEEPING AN EYE ON TO MAKE SURE THEY STAYS SAFE. THIS WEEK COMES WORD: NOTHING'S SAFE.

(TAKE TAT PKG) WHEN THIS YEAR'S MAUI COUNTY BUDGET WAS UNVEILED - THE MOOD WAS CELEBRATORY. A DIUFFICULT TASK HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED - A PLKAN WAS IN PLACE. BUT STILL, THERE WAS ONE ATHING MEMBERS OF THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL BUDGET COMMITTEE FEARED MOST - THE GOVERNOR MIGHT TAKE AWAY TRANSIENT ACCOMODATION TAX DISTRIBUTIONS TO HELP BALANCE THE BUDGET.

VISITORS PAY THOSE TAXES AS PART OF THEIR HOTEL AND RESORT ROOM RATES AND TGHE STATE HAS - ALWAYS - RETURNED THE MAJORITY OF THE TAXES COLLECTED ON EACH ISLAND - BACK TO EACH ISLAND.

THE T-A-T IS A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE FUNDS ON WHICH THE COUNTY RELIES EACH YEAR AND IT COULD AMOUNT TO A 23-MILLION DOLLAR BLOW TO THE BOTTOM LINE. MAUI COUNRTY BUDGET DIRECTOR FRED PABLO, THOUGH, SAYS IT'S NOT A DONE DEAL.

Fred Pablo, Budget Director, Maui County

FP01: "No it's not a done deal. It's a proposal done by Governor Lingle yesterday - but the Hawai;'i Council of Mayors - of which Mayor Tavares is a part is strongly against it. Our senators and representatives from Maui are against it. It's not a done deal."

STILL - IT WILL BE AN UPHILL BATTLE TO FIGHT THE STATE ON SOMETHING THAT WILL HURT THE COUNTIES IF THE STATE KEEPS THE FUNDS - AND MAY HAVE THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE OF AFFECTING TOURISM IF THERE IS NO INCENTIVE TO THE COUNTIES TO ATTRACT VISITORS. PABLO SAYS THE PRUDENT PATH IS TO STICK WITH PLAN A, BUT HAVE PLAN B READY.

FP03:"Well, Plan "A" is to get everyone to realize that this is not the right move to do. Moving the liabilities from the State to the Counties doesn't really help the state overall. We need to do a Plan "B." That, we're working on.

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ THE ENTIRE PROPOSAL FROM GOVERNOR LINGLE ON HER PLAN TO MAKE ENDS MEET OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(BASEBALL)(PiP-CONTRACT SIGN)

J: PLAY BALL! IT MAY BE CALLED "MINOR LEAGUE" BASEBALL, BUT ON MAUI - A PLACE WHERE FANS LOVE THEIR BASEBALL - THERE'S REALLY NOTHING "MINOR" ABOUT IT.

(TAKE BASEBALL PKG) THE ALL-AMERICAN GAME - BASEBALL - IS TAKING ANOTHER SWING AT BASING A PROFESSIONAL MINOR LEAGE FRANCHISE ON MAUI. AT A PRESS CONFERENCE TUESDAY MORNING, THE GOLDEN BASEBALL LEAGUE TEAM FUNDED BY XNE INCORPORATED, INTRODUCED IT'S EXECUTIVE STAFF. MAUI COUNTY'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE XNE STAFF TO MAKE THE DREAM COME TRUE...AND IF THE PAY-BACK PAYS BACK, IT'LL BE LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE.

JI01: "When you look at what they're bringing Maui - not only are they establishing a team here - a team with 22 members that will also travel; they're looking at 44 home games here on Maui. And with the 44 home games, they are bring teams from several different states on the Mainland including Canada. And they will be - on the average - staying here, and I know Carol and Terryl will love this - five nights. With them comes their media. And only theior media but their backers and their boosters. And I'm toldf their booster clubs are huge. And many of them - as well as the players - have never been to Hawai'i, so what a wonderful time to expose to them what Maui has to offer them."///

TEAM MANAGER CORY SNYDER IS A NINE YEAR VETERAN OF THE MAJOR LEAGUES - AND HE UNDERSCORED THE ECONOMIC ASPECT OF THE NEW TEAM - POINTING OUT THAT IT WILL BE COMPRISED OF STRAPPING HUNGRY YOUNG MEN WHO WILL NOT GET BIG LEAGUE PAYCHECKS - AT LEAST NOT YET - BUT HAVE A HIGHER CALLING. - ONE HE CAN APPRECIATE.

CS01: " It's been just fun for me to see the players that come out - to see the drive they have. It's like Rick talked about, they're not here for money, they're here for the love of the game of baseball."///

SNYDER EXPLAINED THAT PART OF THE GRASSROOTS NATURE OF THE ORGANUIZATION WILL BE THAT PLAYERS WILL BE HOUSED BY HOST FAMILIES ON MAUI WHO WILL BE ASKED TO TAKE THESE ATHLETES INTO THEIR HOMES AND SERVE AS A LOCAL CULTURAL CONNECTION AS WELL AS HOUSING FOR THE PLAYERS.

THE FIRST PLAYER WAS AT TUESDAY'S PRESS CONFERENCE. MARK OKANA IS AN O'AHU NATIVE WHO SIGNED THE VERY FIRST CONTRACT WITH THE MAUI BASEBALL ORGANIZATION. THEN, NO SOONER DID HE SIGN UP DID HE GET A HOST FAMILY OFFER. COUNCILMEMBER MIKE VICTORINO EXPLAINED THAT WHIL HIS SON SHANE WAS GETTING STARTED, HE LIVED WITH HOST FAMILIES AND THE ELDER VICTORINO AND HIS WIFE JOYCELYNN PROMISED THEY'D DO THE SAME IF THEY EVER GOT THE CHANCE. NOT SURPRISINGLY - OKANO ACCEPTED THE OFFER TO LIVE AT SHANE VICTORINO'S HOUSE.

SO, WHAT'S THE NAME OF MAUI'S NEW PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TEAM?

Hi'ilei Maxwell-Juan, Kuku Hula

HM01: "The name we came up with is Na Ikaika Koa - which means "The Strong Warriors." And of course we throw in Maui 'cuz we gotta represent - so it's Na Ikaika Koa Maui."

AND THE TEAM COLORS WILL BE BLACK, GREEN, YELLOW AND RED. THE ORGANIZATION HAS LESS THAN FIVE MONTHS TO HIRE A STAFF, AND SOME COACHES AND - OH YEAH - BUILD THE REST OF A TEAM. MAUI NEWS SPORTS COLUMNIST ROBERT COLLIAS POINTED OUT THAT TEAMS HAVE TRIED - AND FAILED - FOR DECADES IN HAWAII BECAUSE WE'RE SO FAR REMOVED FROM -, REALLY, EVERYWHERE.

Robert Ciollias, Maui News Sports Writer

RC01: "This league fgaces - with one Maui team - gargantuan travel costs. I'm very excited and I wish them the best of luck but I think it's going to be a rough ride - a very rough ride. I do believe that Maui will support this team. If you put 'Maui' across their chest, Maui baseball fans are very enthusiastic - but this is a tough gig."

SUPPORT, ENTHUSIASM AND THE LOVE OF THE GAME - THAT'S WHAT XNE IS BANKING ON TO BUILD A LEGACY IN NA IKAIKA KOA MAUI.

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO FIND OUT ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE BRAND NEW NA IKAIKA KOA MAUI, INCLUDING EVERYTHING FROM PART-TIME JOBS TO COACHING TO PLAYING BASEBALL, VISIT THEIR WEBSITE. YOU'LL FIND THAT LINK THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. JUST GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(CHAMBER-DOWNSIZING)(PIP-MAUI CofC LOGO)

J: STARTING A MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM ON MAUI IS THIS ECONOMIC CLIMATE MAY BE A TOUGH ROW TO HOE - BUT, AS WE'RE LEARNING - JUST BEING A MOM AND POP BUSINESS ON MAUI AIN'T NO PICNIC, EITHER.

THIS WEEK AN EMAIL WENT OUT TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE MAUI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXPLAINING THAT THE BUSINESS INCUBATOR ITSELF IS NOT IMMUNE TO THE CURRENT ECONOMIC DOWNTURN. THE MAUI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS SUFFERED THE SAME DECLINING REVENUES THAT WE ALL HAVE AND - AS A RESULT - ARE HAVING TO DOWNSIZE, THEMSELVES.

AS OF THE FIRST OF THE YEAR, TWO STALWART STAFF MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER WILL HAVE TO LEAVE THE ORGANIZATION. OFFICE MANAGER LAURIE ZIMMERMAN AND EVENTS AND MEETINGS MANAGER LESLIE KAYSER ARE BEING LAID OFF. IN ADDITION, OFFICE RECEPTIONIST HOURS ARE BEING CURTAILED AS THE REMAINING STAFF SPREAD THEIR ATTENTION TO THE DEMANDS OF THE CHAMBER. WHAT THAT MEANS, ACCORDING TO THE EMAIL FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PAMELA TUMPAP, IS THAT YOU MIGHT GET A BUSY SIGNAL WHEN YOU CALL THE CHAMBER - OR IT MAY GO TO VOICEMAIL. THEY ASK THAT YOU PLEASE BE PATIENT - YOUR UNDERSTANDING WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD HELPING THEM, HELP MAUI'S SMALL BUSINESSES THROUGH THE TOUGHEST TIMES WE'VE SEEN IN DECADES.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, COMBINE IMAGINATION, ARTISTIC VISION - AND THE ABILITY TO WORK WITH MOLTEN MEDIA AND YOU MIGHT HAVE A CAREER IN GLASS ART. A REMARKABLE ART EXHIBITION WHEN WE COME BACK. AND, MONDAY WAS THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER. AUTUMN ROARED OUT LIKE A LION WITH SOME WILD WEATHER ON MAUI. PICTURES, DETAILS AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(MAGE)(PiP-Glass Sculpture)

J: PART OF THE FUN OF HOLIDAY SHOPPING IS LOOKING AT STUFF YOU COULD NEVER AFFORD. BUT THERE'S ONE DISPLAY OF AMAZING THINGS ON MAUI THIS HOLIDAY SEASON THAT MAY TEST YOUR BANK ACCOUNT - BUT WILL DEFINITELY FIRE YOUR IMAGINATION.

(TAKE MAGE PKG) GLASS...ART. THE PROCESS IS SPELL-BINDING TO WATCH. THE RESULTS ARE SOMETIMES INDESCRIBABLY BEAUTIFUL. AND BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF FEBRUARY - YOU CAN SEE BOTH - AT THE WAILEA MARRIOTT RESORT AND SPA.

THE SECOND ANNUAL MAUI ART GLASS EXPO BRINGS TOGETHER NEARLY THREE DOZEN OF THE WORLD'S VERY BEST GLASS WORKERS AND SOME OF THEIR VERY FINEST CREATIONS. EXPO CURATOR RON NOLZ HAD THE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TASK OF SELECTING THE ARTISTS AND PIECES FOR THE SHOW - AND IT'S TOUGH TO NARROW IT DOWN FROM THE HUNDREDS OF GIFTED ARTSTS WHO WANTED TO BE IN THE SHOW - TO JUST 35.

Ron Nolz, Curator, Maui Art Glass Expo

RN01: "That's the curation part. That's thedance that we do. We're trying to bring to Maui something that they've never seen before - something that wows them and that has an impact. So we're looking for that special touch."

THERE ARE SOME 350 SPECIAL TOUCHES AT THIS YEAR'S ART GLASS EXPO - EACH ONE TOTALLY UNIQUE - SOME DEFYING DESCRIPTION. THESE FAMILIAR LOOKING CREATURES - THE PRIOTUGESE MAN OF WAR - SUSPENDED FOREVER IN A MEDIAUM OF CRYSTAL CLEAR GLASS - WAS CREATED RIGHT HERE ON MAUI. AND IS JUST ONE OF THE HUNDREDS OF PIECES THAT CONBSTANTLY PROMPT THE QUESTION - HOW ON EARTH DO THEY DO THAT?

TO WATCH THE PROCESS OF "DANCING WITH FIRE" AS RON CALLS IT IS MEZMERIZING. AND FROM A PILE OF SAND TO A FINISHED WORK OF ART - TAKES A LONG TIME.

RN02: "It takes about 25 years and a few hours. Twenty-five years of experience and just a few hours in front of the furnace. I'm not being cute or funny. That really is about it. Most glass artists are 15 years, 20 years in the business. The really good ones are 30 years in the business. It's a very difficult technique to learn to do." ///

THE SHOW IS OPEN EVERY DAY AND EVERY THING IS FOR SALE. IN FACT, RON POINTED OUT THAT THE INITIAL DISPLAY WAS ALMOST CHANGED BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE WANTED TO BUY THE MASTERPIECES BEFORE THE SHOW EVEN OPENED.

RN03: "Come and enjoy - you'll never see a collection of glass like this anywhere in the world. It's phenomenal to have all this one place at one time."

(ON-CAM TAG) REMEMBER, THE MAUI ART GLASS EXPO IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC DAILY FROM 8 A.M. UNTIL 10 P.M. AT THE WAILEA MARRIOTT RESORT AND SPA. FOR DETAILS, GOT TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS.

(WINTER SOLSTICE-WX)(PiP-SUNSET)

J: IF YOU'RE A FAN OF MAUI HISTORY, THEN YOU KNOW THAT THE ANCIENT FISHPOND CALLED KO'IE'IE AT KALEPOLEPO PARK BY THE HUMPBACK WHALE SANCTUARY IN KIHEI IS BUILT ON SOMETHING OF A COMPASS.

(VO) WHEN THE POND WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO, THE NORTH WALL OF THE POND WAS POINTED DIRECTLY AT THE SETTING SUN AT THE WINTER SOLSTICE. DURING THE SPRING AND FALL EQUINOX, THE SUN SETS IN THE EXACT CENTER OF THE POND AND AT THE SUMMER SOLSTICE, THE SUN SETS DIRECTLY IN LINE WITH THE SOUTH WALL OF THE POND.

(ON-CAM) THAT WAS THE TYPICALLY BREATH-TAKING MAUI SUNSET MONDAY EVENING - THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER. BUT IT WAS THE WEATHER ON SUNDAY, THE DAY BEFORE, THE VERY LAST DAY OF FALL - THAT MADE HEADLINES AROUND HERE.

(FF-CG-VO) TWO WAVES OF STORMS SWEPT THE NORTH SIDE OF MAUI BRINGING PEA AND MARBLE-SIZED HAIL TO KAHULUI, SPRECKELSVILLE, PA'IA AND EVEN MAKAWAO. THESE CHILLING IMAGES WERE CAPTURED BY MOVIE PRODUCER AND LOCATION SCOUT GLENN BEADLES. AFTER INITIALLY WORRIED THAT THE POUNDING OF FROZEN RAIN MIGHT CAUSE DAMAGE, BEADLES SAID HE WAS ENCHANTED BY THE PASSING STORM SINCE HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT IN HIS 35 YEARS IN HAWAI'I - AT LEAST NOT AT SEA LEVEL.

(CON'T VO) THE TINY ICE CRYSTALS DIDN'T ADD UP TO ENOUGH TO BUILD A SNOW MAN, AND THERE ISN'T MUCH CHANCE OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS, AT LEAST NOT AT SEA LEVEL - BUT THE SUMMIT OF MAUNA KEA GOT A DUSTING OF SNOW ON SUNDAY AND WILL LIKELY HAVE AT LEAST A PARTIAL BLANKET OF WHITE ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

(ON-CAM) THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS THE STORM WAS INDICATIVE OF WINTER EL NINO EVENTS THAT DON'T BRING A LOT OF PRECIPITATION, BUT CAN BRING EXTREMES IN TEMPERATURE AND WIND SPEED.

(HOLIDAY CLOSURES)(PiP-COUNTY BLDG)

J: A QUICK REMINDER THAT - FOR BOTH CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS DAYS, ALL MAUI COUNTY OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED - AS WILL ALL SCHOOLS, BANKS AND STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICES - ALONG WITH THE WAIEHU GOLF COURSE AND THE LANA'I LANDFILL.
