J: THEY'RE BACK! TOURISM NUMBERS CONTINUE TO CLIMB IN HAWAI'I - AND MAUI COUNTY IS LEADING THE SURGE.

AND, LIFE-SAVING DIALYSIS TREATMENT ON MAUI - IT'S THE SUBJECT A SIMMERING BATTLE BETWEEN PROVIDERS. WE'LL HEAR FROM BOTH SIDES.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS WE DID A LITTLE STAR-GAZING THIS WEEK AS SOME OF MAUI'S MORE WELL-KNOWN RESIDENTS CAME FORWARD TO SHARE THE SPOTLIGHT WITH A BRAND NEW BOOK AND A NEW MOVIE.

IN SPORTS, NOW THAT FOOTBALL IS OVER MORE THE M-I-L, IT'S TIME FOR SOCCER AND HOOPS. MAUI TEAMS ARE ALL PAU IN FOOTBALL IN THE STATE PLAYOFFS. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES-BROWN CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IF - AFTER 50 YEARS - HAL HOLBROOK CAN STILL CHANNEL MARK TWAIN. ALL THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR WATCHING MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING AND YOU'RE WATCHING MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - IN HIGH DEFINITION. IT WAS GENERAL GEORGE PATTON WHO DEFINED SUCCESS WHEN HE SAID "IT'S HOW HIGH YOU BOUNCE AFTER YOU HIT BOTTOM. WELL, THE TOURISM INDUSTRY HIT BOTTOM TWO YEARS AGO, AND BOY, HAS IT EVER BOUNCED BACK.

(TAKE TOURISM NUMBERS PKG)TOURISM SHOWED AN UNEXPECTEDLY LARGE GROWTH SPURT IN OCTOBER AS THE ENTIRE STATE BENEFITTED FROM INCREASED TRAFFIC FROM ALL PARTS OF THE GLOBE. WHILE MOST VISITORS TO HAWAI'I GO TO O'AHU, THE NEIGHBOR ISLANDS OUTPACED O'AHU IN TJHE INCREASE IN VISITS BY ONE AND A HALF TIMES.

WHILE ALL ISLANDS SHOWED NICE GAINS, ALL THREE DESTINATIONS IN MAUI COUNTY ENJOYED DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH IN ARRIVALS IN OCTOBER THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.

AND THE ISLAND OF MAUI LED ALL ISLANDS IN ALMOST EVERY CATEGORY WITH SUBSTANTIAL GROWTH IN EACH. IN FACT, ONLY LANA'I OUTPACED MAUI IN THE PERCENTAGE OF INCREASED ARRIVALS FROM BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC LOCATIONS. TOURISM OFFICIALS SAY THIS TREND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GROW THIS MUCH EVERY MONTH - BUT FOR NOW, IT'S THE BEST NEWS OF THE YEAR FOR THAT SEGMENT OF THE ECONOMY.

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ THE ENTIRE REPORT - WITH ALL THE CHARTS AND GRAPHS, YOU'LL FIND IT ON OUR WEBSITE. JUST GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THE STARS WERE OUT THIS WEEKEND ON MAUI. WE'LL TAKE YOU TO TWO EVENTS THAT FEATURED SOME OF OUR MORE PROMINENT RESIDENTS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. AND WE'' REPRISE A BEAUTIFUL VIDEO THAT'S ALL ABOUT "PRACTICING ALOHA." THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(PRACTICE ALOHA)(PiP-PRACTICE ALOHA BOOK)

J: "PRACTICE ALOHA." FOR SOME, IT COMES NATURALLY. FOR SOME, MAYBE IT'S EASIER SAID THAN DONE. THERE'S A BOOK ABOUT IT, AND THIS WEEKEND SEVERAL OF THE AUTHORS STEPPED FORTH TO HELP GET THE WORD OUT.

(TAKE PRACTICE ALOHA PKG) PRACTICE ALOHA - WHAT A GREAT IDEA. BUT, JUST HOW DO YOU DO IT? THE IDEA IS TIMELESS - TO PRACTICE ALOHA. BUT AS A PROJECT, IT BEGAN IN 2007. RESTAUTEUR, ENTREPRENEUR AND CHEF MARK ELLMAN HAD THE IDEA TO COLLECT THE THOUGHTS OF LOCAL FOLKS ON THE TOPIC. BUT - AT FIRST, THE REPONSE WASN'T OVERWHELMING.

Mark Ellman, Chef, Author

ME01: "Not very good. I sort of expected people would...'boy I want to do this right away.' But people have lives and they have other things. They probably put it on their desk and bills on top of it, so it became sort of secondary. But perseverence, patience, everything happens."

AMONG THE CONTRIBUTORS WAS MAUI RADIO PERSONALITY ANDF VIDEO PRODUCER CINDY PAULOS.

Cindy Paulos, Radio Personality, Writer

CP01: "Well, there was first the web site, practicealoha-dot-org, which weas about three years ago. And Mark had this fabulous website with people doing quotes about Aloha. He asked me to do a submission. And I had a poem I had written called 'Practicing Aloha,' actually - which was perfect for it. I had written all my life but there's a difference between lyrics and poetry."///

(GEORGE KAHUMOKU CHORUS "PRACTING ALOHA, THE SPIRIT OF OUR LAND...)

CINDY WORKED WITH FULTON TASHAMBE, ERIC GILLIOM, MARTY DREAD AND OTHERS TO CREATE AN ARRANGEMENT FOR HER POEM - AND AN ENTIRE CD ABOUT...PRACTICING ALOHA. AMONG THE WIDE VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS - AND AUTHORS, ONE IS A CHEF WHO USED TO JUMP OUT OF AIRPLANES. ANOTHER IS A RATHER WELL-KNOWN DRUMMER.

Lloyd Yokoyama, Owner, Broke Da Mouth Cookie Co.

LY01: "I believe it's the love and kindness to other people and the same thing in return. You know, if you treat people with respect, they're gonna' treat you back with respect. No matter where you go - what nationality, what color, what creed, you know. Treat a human being like a human being and they're going to treat you in return."

Mick Fleetwood, Drummer

MF01: "When I came here and finally moved here about eight years ago - I came and I still consider myself a visitor. And I think you need to keep that in perspective. Especially if you come to be part of something, that - to me is as close as you can come to - technically - what the whole spirit is about. You are part of something - and if you try to be too poignant, an island within an island when you're on an island, you're not going to do too well. And I mean not do too well as far as becoming emotionally and spiritually a part of what these island represent."

THERE ARE 140 CONTRIBUTORS TO THE BOOK, AND ANOTHER 60 OR SO ON THE PRACTICE ALOHA WEBSITE. ELLMAN SAYS THE BOOK SERVES A NEED IN HAWAII AND FILLS A NICHE, AND IF HE DOESN'T CREATE A SEQUEL, HE THINKS SOMEONE ELSE SHOULD.

ME02: "Funny, someone was saying it's sort of like the Hawaiian version of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul,' but they called it 'Saimin for the Soul.' So, maybe someone will do that."

IN THE MEANTIME, THERE ARE SOME PRETTY AMAZING PERSPECTIVES AND PRETTY POWERFUL THOUGHTS ON WHAT IT TAKES TO PRACTICE ALOHA.

(ON-CAM TAG) A LITTLE LATER IN THIS WEEK'S EDITION OF MAUI TV NEWS, WE'LL FEATURE THE BEAUTIFUL VIDEO CREATED BY MASTER FILMMAKER BOB STONE - SET TO THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF MAUI'S OWN CINDY PAULOS. STAY TUNED FOR THAT.

(GET A JOB)(PiP-GET A JOB)

J: AND MICK FLEETWOOD WAS A BUSY MAN THIS WEEKEND. HE AND MANY OTHER AMONG THE STARS OF THE NEW ALL-MAUI FILM "GET A JOB" CONVERGED ON THE MACC FOR THE MAUI PREMIERE THIS WEEKEND. WE WERE THERE, TOO.

(TAKE GET A JOB PKG) IN FACT, IT WAS PRETTY MUCH A PACKED HOUSE OF ENTERTAINMENT-TYPES FROM MAUI AT THE MAUI ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER - ALL THERE FOR "GET A JOB." THE MOVIE WAS FUNNY, MAYBE A LITTLE PREDICTABLE BUT EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE - AND EVERYONE IN THE MOVIE APPEARED TO HAVING A GREAT TIME.

A LOCAL PREMIERE LIKE THIS SUCH FUN BECAUSE EVERYBODY KNOWS EVERYBODY, AND MOST KNOW WHEN THEY APPEAR IN THE FILM. AFTERWARDS, A HUMBLED BRIAN KOHNE ACCEPTED THE CHEERS FROM THE CROWD - THEN PROCEEDED TO INVITE EVERYONE WHO ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FILM ON-STAGE. AND THAT WAS A LOT.

AFTERWARDS, THE CROWD POURED INTO THE EVENTS LAWN FOR THE MUSIC OF DOCTOR NAT - AND THE AUTOGRAPH OPPORTUNITIES. DIRECTOR AND WRITE BRIAN KOHNE TOLD US HE WAS VERY PLEASED WITH HIS PRODUCTION - ALTHOUGH IT WASN'T EXACTLY THE WAY HE ORIGINALLY ENVISIONED IT.

Brian Kohne, Director, Writer, "Get a Job"

BK01: "Well, not the original vision - certainly - but when we went into production with the script this is pretty much what we were after. We pretty much fulfilled what we were trying to accomplish. It got sa little more colorful than I thought was possible - so that's cool."

COLORFUL - AND VERY COOL - AND CERTAINLY NOT CAMERA-SHY WAS THE FILM'S CO-STAR ERIC GILLIOM. NOT ONLY DID HE DO HIS OWN STUNTS - BUT HE'S ACTUALLY A VETERAN OF THE BIG SCREEN.

Eric Gilliom, "Merton"

EG01: "The first film I ever did was with Gene Hackman and Barbara Hershey, a movie called 'Hoosiers,' a basketball film I did when I was 22 - frewsh out of college in Chicago. I was done with the midwest. I'm a Maui boy and I went to L.A. I was done with the midwest. And I auditioned for my first role and I got it and turned right around and flew back to Indiana."

IN 'GET A JOB" GILLIOM GETS TO STRETCH A BIT - AND BUILD ON A GOOFY CHARACTER HE'S BEEN BREEDING AND BUILDING THROUGHOUT HIS DRAMATIC CAREER. AND SPEAKING OF BREEDING, KOHNE TAKES THE FAMILY ANALOGY TO A HIGHER LEVEL.

THAT THE FILM WAS HIS BABY IS SOMETHING OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR KOHNE - HE EVEN FEELS LIKE HE'S GIVEN BIRTH TO SOMETHING.

bk02: "Yeah, it took two years. It was hard. It was fun. It was very satisfying and now we've got this whole new community. So what we've given birth to is not just a film but a movement and a team and a consciousness. At least that's what I'm hoping."

IT MAY NOT WIN AN ACADEMTY AWARD - BUT SOME MOVIES ARE MADE JUST TO HAVE FUN...AND THERE'S NO DOUBTH THAT GET A JOB IS FUN.

(ON-CAM TAG) WRITER AND DIRECTOR BRIAN KOHNE SAYS THERE ARE STILL A FEW SO-CALLED "TWEAKS" NEEDED BEFORE "GET A JOB" GOES NATIONWIDE. IT'S ONE OF THOSE MOVIES YOU HAVE TO WATCH MORE THAN ONCE BECAUSE THE LAUGHTER COVERS UP SOME OF THE FOLLOW-UP FUNNY BITS. ALSO, YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF GETTING DISTRACTED FROM THE PLOT BECAUSE YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE BACKGROUND SAYING "I KNOW WHERE THAT IS." IN ANY CASE, WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE, BE SURE TO SEE "GET A JOB."

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, NOW THAT AMERICAN-STYLE FOOTBALL IS OVER FOR THE MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE, IT'S TIME FOPR WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD CALLS FOOTBALL. AND PAUL JANES-BROWN HAS A PREVIEW OF A SPECIAL SHOW THAT - EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR 50 YEARS, NOBODY KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN. HIS REPORT IS UP NEXT IN CURTAIN CALL WHEN MAUI TV NEWS COMES BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, FOOTBALL SEASON IS OVER FOR THE MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE - WHICH MEANS T'S TIME TO LACE UP THE CLEATS AND GET READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL. OR, AS WE CALL IT IN THE U-S ...SOCCER. THE LADIES OF THE M-I-L HAVE BEGUN THEIR SOCCER SEASON. AND AS IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH FOR SOCCER MOMS - SLASH - CHAUFFEURS ON MAUI, BOTH THE BOYS AND GIRLS HAVE STARTED THE 20-10 BASKETBALL SEASON.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP-PJB)

J: HAL HOLBROOK IN “MARK TWAIN TONIGHT!” WILL BE MAKING HIS ONLY HAWAII APPEARANCE ON DECEMBER 12 AT 5 P.M. AT THE CASTLE THEATER OF THE MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER IN KAHULUI. IT’S A BENEFIT FOR THE ROTARY CLUB OF MAUI, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE LESLIE GRANAT FOUNDATION AND BLUE HAWAIIAN HELICOPTERS, PAUL JANES-BROWN SPOKE TO THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED, TONY AND MULTI EMMY AWARD WINNING ACTOR LAST WEEK FROM HIS HOME IN LOS ANGELES AND HAS THIS PROFILE.

PJB: HAL HOLBROOK WILL BE 86 ON FEB 17TH. AT A TIME WHEN MOST OF US WOULD BE HAPPY TO PLAY GOLF, RELAX AND RETIRE, MR. HOLBROOK IS ENJOYING ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE YEARS OF HIS LIFE. HE HAS A RECURRING ROLE, AS THE EVIL DEMPSEY ON THE NBC HIT SERIES THE EVENT AND HE HAS JUST WRAPPED WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. IN WHICH HE PLAYS THE ELDER NARRATOR JACOB JANKOWSKI TO ROBERT “TWILIGHT” PATTINSON’S YOUNGER CIRCUS VETERINARIAN. MR. HOLBROOK SAID “IT REALLY LOOKS WONDERFUL…I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT IT'S VERY REAL I HOPE THE PICTURE'S GOING TO BE AS GOOD AS I HOPE … IT'S A GOOD STORY.”

THIS YEAR WILL BE MR. HOLBROOK’S 56TH YEAR PERFORMING IN, WHAT IS ARGUABLY, THE MOST FAMOUS ONE-PERSON PERFORMANCE IN THEATRICAL HISTORY, “MARK TWAIN TONIGHT!” MR. HOLBROOK CREDITS HIS MENTOR, PROF. EDWARD WRIGHT FOR INSPIRING HIM TO BECOME MARK TWAIN. “HE WAS LIKE A SURROGATE FATHER, HE WAS THE BEST FRIEND I EVER I HAD. I OWE MY WHOLE CAREER TO HIM.” IT WAS PROFESSOR WRIGHT WHO ASSIGNED MARK TWAIN AS A CHARACTER FOR MR. HOLBROOK TO DO AS AN HONORS PROJECT AT DENNISON UNIVERSITY.

MARK TWAIN WAS AMERICA’S FIRST STAND UP COMEDIAN AND HIS NOVEL HUCKLEBERRY FINN, WHICH TACKLED RACISM AT A TIME WHEN SEGREGATION WAS THE LAW OF THE LAND, IS WIDELY ACCLAIMED AS AMERICA’S GREATEST.

MR HOLBROOK HAS MORE THAN 19 HOURS OF MATERIAL AND IN THE PROGRAM IT STATES “WHILE MR. TWAIN’S SELECTIONS WILL COME FROM THE COMPLETE LIST BELOW, (THERE ARE ABOUT 75) WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PIN HIM DOWN AS TO WHICH OF THEM HE WILL DO. HE CLAIMS IT WOULD CRIPPLE HIS INSPIRATION.” WITH THAT BREADTH OF MATERIAL, EVEN IF ONE MAY HAVE SEEN THE SHOW BEFORE, MR. HOLBROOK IS LIKE THE GRATEFUL DEAD USED TO BE OR BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, HE NEVER REPEATS A SHOW.

IN 2007 HE ACHIEVED THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE OLDEST PERSON EVER NOMINATED FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR FOR HIS PERFORMANCE AS RON FRANZ IN INTO THE WILD DIRECTED BY SEAN PENN. HE HAS WON THE TONY FOR HIS PORTRAYAL OF MARK TWAIN IN MARK TWAIN TONIGHT! AND HE'S WON FIVE EMMY’S.

HIS PERFORMANCE IN THAT EVENING SUN AS ABNER MEECHAM, THE OCTOGENARIAN RETIREMENT HOME ESCAPEE WHO COMES BACK TO HIS HOMESTEAD TO FIND THAT HIS LAWYER SON HAS RENTED IT TO WHAT ABNER CONSIDERS “WHITE TRASH,” IS WORTHY OF AN ACADEMY AWARD, HOWEVER THE PICTURE, THE FIRST BY ITS DIRECTOR, SCOTT TEEMS, WAS TOO SMALL TO REACH THE LEVEL OF OSCAR CONTENTION. TOO BAD BECAUSE IT’S THE BEST PICTURE MOST PEOPLE HAVEN’T YET SEEN.

ROGER EBERT SAID ABOUT MR. HOLBROOK, “WATCHING HOLBROOK, I WAS REMINDED AGAIN OF HOW STEADY AND VALUABLE THIS MAN HAS BEEN THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. I SAW HIS FAMOUS "MARK TWAIN TONIGHT" THREE TIMES IN THE '60S…I REMEMBER HIM MOST RECENTLY AS THE OLD MAN WHO CARES AND WORRIES ABOUT THE DOOM-SEEKING HERO OF "INTO THE WILD." HERE (THAT EVENING SUN) HE INCORPORATES EVERYTHING HE KNOWS ABOUT GETTING TO THE AGE OF 80 (HE'S ACTUALLY 85) AND CONVEYS IT WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST SIGN OF EFFORT. THIS ISN'T A PERFORMANCE, IT'S AN EMBODIMENT…”

SINCE MR. HOLBROOK AND I HAVE THE WIDOWER BROTHERHOOD IN COMMON, I SHARED A QUOTE FROM ROBERT ANDERSON’S I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER, ‘DEATH ENDS A LIFE, BUT IT DOESN’T END A RELATIONSHIP.’ I ASKED HIM WHAT HIS RELATIONSHIP IS WITH DIXIE CARTER, HIS LATE WIFE, WHO PASSED IN APRIL FROM ENDOMETRIAL CANCER. “I TALK TO HER CONSTANTLY I SWEAR TO HEAVEN THAT I COULD HEAR HER TALKING BACK TO ME. I CAN HEAR HER VOICE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT NOW WHILE I'M TALKING...WHAT I'M SAYING TO YOU. I COULD JUST HEAR HER SAY, ‘THAT'S RIGHT DARLING.’ I AM SURROUNDED BY DIXIE. I HAVE PICTURES OF HER ALL OVER EVERYWHERE ON EVERY SURFACE LOOKING AT ME AND SHE'S ABSOLUTELY A PART OF EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY AND NIGHT WITH ME AND I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T EXPECT IT TO EVER CHANGE,” HE SAID AND HE SOUNDED CHOKED UP.

MR. HOLBROOK WILL BE ON MAUI ON DECEBER 12TH. FOR TICKETS OR INFORMATION GO TO MAUITVNEWS.COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS. DON’T MISS THIS SHOW…
