(intro-FF)

Open (TWO SHOT)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE, AND WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S EDITION OF MAUI TV NEWS THIS WEEK. I'M JEFF KING.

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. THE FUTURE OF HAWAI'I DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL ABSOLUTELY MUST BE REDUCED. THAT WAS GOVERNOR LINGLE'S MESSAGE LAST WEEK.

(Turn to cam) FROM AN INTERNATIONAL ENERGY FORUM IN HONOLULU TO THE CHILLY SLOPES OF KAHALAWAI, THE GOVERNOR SAYS WE MUST DEVELOP ENERGY SECURITY. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING BRINGS US THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THIS STORY.

(take WindFarm+speech Pkg) WHAT COULD BE MORE NATURAL THAN HARNESSING THE POWER OF MOVING AIR TO LIGHT OUR HOMES. IT WAS THE FIRST TRIP TO THE KAHWAWA WIND FARM FOR GOVERNOR LINGLE AND SHE SHOWED UP DRESSED - SHE THOUGHT - WARMLY ENOUGH. THE RIDE TO THE TOP - SOME 2000 FEET IN ELEVATION IS VERY BUMPY...AND SPEAKING OF VERY IT WAS VERY WINDY - IMAGINE THAT - WINDY AT A WIND FARM - AND VERY COLD. WHEN THE SKY BROKE THE VIEW WENT ON FOREVER.

JOINING THE GOVERNOR WAS ANDY KARSNER, ASSISTANT ENERGY FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY. HE WAS IMPRESSED WITH WHAT HE SAW.

AK01: What you people...should be proud of it."

AFTER A FEW PHOTOS THE GOVERNOR WAS WISKED - LATE - TO THE ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LUNCH AT KING KAMEHAMEHA GOLF COURSE. DURING HER SPEECH TO A PACKED HOUSE, THE GOVERNOR RELATED HER TRIP TO THE WIND FARM AND TALKED ABOUT THE WIND CHILL FACTOR. SHE ALSO TALKED ABOUT THE VIEW - AND SHE TOLD MAUI TV NEWS THAT THERE IS A VISION OF HAWAII'S ENERGY FUTURE - AND IT IS CLEAR.

LL01: "Clearly we have to get ourselves off foreign oil....to start to bring prices down."

THE GOVERNOR SAYS THE TECHNOLOGY IS THERE, THE INVESTORS ARE THERE...THERE'S JUST ONE MAJOR STUMBLING BLOCK.

LL02: But we have a regulatory and government framework that makes it very difficult for the average person -and we need to make it easier for them to jook into the existing energy system."

WHEN CAN WE LOOK FOR THAT?

LL03: Well we're seeing some things change now. We have some cases pending before PUC regarding net energy metering. Happens in other parts of US and needs to happen here as well."

(on-cam tag) AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE GOVERNMENT RED TAPE THE GOVERNOR WOULD LIKE TO BREAK THROUGH - THERE ARE 23 DIFFERENT STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES THAT REQUIRE PERMITS AND REPORTS BE UP TO DAYE IN ORDER TO ALLOW KAHEAWA WIND FARM TO OPERATE.

(Fed Energy)(PiP-Fed Meeting Logo)

J: LAST WEEK THE GOVERNOR DELIVERED THE OPENING REMARKS TO A SUMMIT GROUP OF WORLD LEADERS ON THE TOPIC OF ENERGY SECURITY. LATER IN THE WEEK SHE SIGNED A HISTORIC DOCUMENT ESTABLISHING THE HAWAI'I CLEAN ENERGY INITIATIVE - A LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP DESIGNED TO ACCELERATE THE TRANSFORMATION OF HAWAII INTO ONE OF THE WORLD'S FIRST ECONOMIES BASED PRIMARILY ON CLEAN ENERGY RESOURCES.

(VO) 12:30 PM 2/7/2008THE GOVERNOR'S CO-SIGNER WAS ASSISTANT ENERGY SECRETRAY KARSNER - WHO JOINED THE GOVERNOR ON HER VISIT TO MAUI. HE UNDERSCORED THE SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL HAWAII HAS TO DEVELOP ENERGY SECURITY IN POTENTIALLY RECORD TIME - IF THEY CAN CUT THROUGH THE RED TAPE.

AK01: "As the governor said you have one of best wind regimes in world. wind-half-theprice of fossil fuels. 25million dollars coming in May in equipment. Gonna let it sit? There is technical problem to solve But solvable. You have all this free wind. That's a regulatory and a policy problem. That's what we want to help HI solve."

(Wave Energy)(Oceanlinx Machine)

JY: THE ENERGY WAS ONCE AGAIN ON MAUI THIS WEEK WITH THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF A REVOLUTIONARY WAVE ENERGY PROJECT THAT WILL COME TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE ISLAND. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING HAS THE DETAILS.

(take wave energy package)

THE IDEA WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED TO THE PUBLIC ON MAUI AT THE MAYOR'S ENERGY EXPO LAST FALL. ALONG THE LINES OF A MAN-MADE "BLOW-HOLE," ELECTRICITY CAN BE HARNESSED TO LIGHT NEARLY 3,000 HOMES.

PK01: "tHE PISTON...and delivers electricy back to shore via underwater cable - and into the grid."

THIS WEEK, IT BECAME OFFICIAL. IN A WEBCAST NEWS CONFERENCE, GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE WAS JOINED BY AN ALL-STAR TEAM TO ACCOUNCE THAT OCEANLINX WILL INSTALL THE WAVE ENERGY MACHINE. THE DEVICE WILL BE LOCATED ABOUT A HALF-MILE OFF SHORE FROM THE PAUWELA LIGHTHOUSE AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE NEARLY INVISIBLE WITH THE NAKED EYE FROM THE COAST.

IN HER REMARKS, THE GOVERNOR EXPRESSED THAT - WHILE THE TECHNOLOGY MIGHT NOT BE PROVEN YET - WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY SELF-0SUFFICIENCY, WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

LL01: "The fact is that doing....and that's our energy security and independence."

ALSO ADDRESSING THE AUDIENCE WERE REPRESENTATIVES ANGUS MCKELVEY AND MELE CARROLL - WHOSE DISTRICT WILL BE HOME TO THE DEVICE.

MC01: "I would especially like to thank people of HI...demonstrate...some new across the nation."

ENERGY SUFFICIENCY SEEMS TO BE BECOMING LESS OF A DREAM AND MORE OF A PLAN. BUT THE DAY'S MOST AMBITIOUS REMARKS CAME FROM THE HEAD MAN OF MAUI ELECTRIC PARENT COMPANY - HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC. HE SAYS OFF SHORE OF THE VALLEY ISLE IS THE PERFECT [PLACE TO LOOK TO SEE THE FUTURE.

MM01: "I think one of the promising things about Maui - energy-efficient faster than any other island. Could be energy effient by the end of this decade."

REPORTING FROM THE ISLAND OF THE BIG DREAM FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING

(on-cam tag) TO HAVE A LOOK AT HOW THIS UNIQUE WAVE ENERGY MACHINE FUNCTIONS, FOLLOW THE LINK TO OCEANLINX FROM OUR WEB SITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Toss to B Block)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, FEEDING THE HUNGRY. THERE WAS A HUGE FEAST IN WAILEA LAST WEEK. A BENEFIT TO PROVIDE THOUSANDS MORE HOT MEALS TO THOSE IN NEED. THAT STORY IS UP NEXT.

JY: AND YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN THE ORANGE SHIRTS AND THE ACTIVITY ALONG NORTH KIHEI ROAD. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THAT FENCE IS FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL. WE'LL EXPLAIN WHEN WE COME BACK.

J: AND MAUI ESCAPED MOST OF THE RECORD POUNDING RAINS THIS WEEK. BUT STILL, THE WATER DEPARTMENT SAYS "PLEASE" CONSERVE. DETAILS WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B Block)

(Hale KauKau)(PiP-Hale KauKau)

JY: THE "HOUSE OF MEAL." WHILE, IN ENGLISH, THE NAME ISN'T AS CATCHY AS "OUTBACK," LONGHI'S OR BUBBA GUMPS, IT'S HAWAIIAN NAME - HALE KAU KAU - INSTANTLY REMINDS THEIR FAITHFUL PATRONS OF A PLACE WHERE THERE IS ALWAYS A DELICIOUS, HOT MEAL. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING TAKES US TO ONE OF THE BUSIEST EATERIES IN ALL OF MAUI COUNTY.

(Take Hale Kau Kau Pkg)COMFORT FOOD. THAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THE HEART DISHES - AND HEALTHOY SERVINGS OF A VARIETY OF FOOD GROUPS. AND YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE - FREE. HALE KAU KAU IS A MAINSTAY IN SOUTH MAUI - AND HAS BEEN FOR NEARLY 17 YEARS. IN FACT, SINCE AUGUIST FIRST, 1991, THEY HAVE NEVER MISSED A DAY - SERVING A HOT MEAL EVERY NIGHT TO AN AVERAGE OF 100 PEOPLE WHO COME TO THE COUNTER AT ST TERESAS CHURCH IN KIHEI - AND ANOTHER 50 TO 55 WHO CAN'T GET HERE - SO VOLUNTEERS BRING DINNER TO THEM.

JIM OSAKI IS CHIEF COOK - AND AFTER ALL THESE YEARS HE KNOWS HOW MUCH TO PREPARE ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT - AND HE ALWAYS HAS A STAFF OF VOLUNTEERS AND ASSISTANTS TO HELP GET THE JOB DONE.

OF COURSE IT'S ALL BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE TO EAT - AND IT'S JUST THAT SOMETIMES - SOME FOLKS CAN'T AFFORD TO. MARIE OSAKI IS THE CHIEF COOK'S BOSS - AND MOM. MARIE HAS BEEN THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR FOR 13 OF THE 17 YEARS. ON THIS NIGHT, SHE GETS TO DRESS UP FOR THE ANNUAL HALE KAU KAU FUNDRAISER AT THE WAILEA MARRIOTT.

Marie Osaki, Director, Hale Kau Kau

MO02: "A very good night. Exciting. Very excited."

A WOMAN OF FEW WORDS, SHE IS THANKFUL FOR THE CHANCE TO GET TO DO THIS GOOD WORK.

MO01: "I'm thankful for this program. I love it. I'm thankful that the church allows me to do it."

AS USUAL, MARIE DIDN'T SIT MUCH - SHE WAS BUSY THANKING PEOPLE - AND MAKING SURE EVERYONE WAS TAKEN CARE OF. AND WERE THEY EVER. A BEAUTIFUL SETTING, WITH SILENT AUCTION ITEMS LINING THE WALLS..AND A BEAUTIFUL MEAL. AN EXPENSIVE MEAL FOR THESE FOLKS...AND THAT'S THE WHOLE IDEA.

Marie Thomas, Volunteer/Event Coordinator

MT02: "In the past we've made 10-15 thousand. tHIS YEAR WE HOPE TO RAISE CLOSE TO 20 THOUSAND. this year we're doing something different, allowing people to sponsor tables and pay extra for that."

PEOLLE DIDN'T MIND PAYING THE EXTRA MONEY. AND, THERE WERE EXTRA PEOPLE.

MT: "I would say we have about 400 people. We thought there'd be 380 but we had people walk in and purchase tickets...we love it."

EVEN MARIE COULDN'T RESIST THE SILENT AUCTION'S CLOSING MOMENTS. THEN THERE WAS THE LIVE AUCTION - WHERE THE TOP ITEM WAS - NOT SURPRISINGLY - A PRIME RIB DINNER FOR 20 PREPARED BY MARIE'S KITCHEN. NOT ONLY DID IT SELL FOR 25-HUNDRED DOLLARS - BUT IT SOLD TWICE FOR THAT PRICE. THE EVENING WAS CAPPED OFF WITH COFFEE, DESSERT AND HULA FROM THE ACCLAIMED HALAU KEKUAOKALA'AU'ALA'ILIAHI.

PROGRAM COSTS ABOUT 10,000 DOLLARS A MONTH TO FEED THE HUNGRY, SO TONIGHT - AFTER ALL THE EFFORT - WILL COVER TWO MONTHS AT BEST. THIS FUND RAISER, IN TANDEM WITH AN ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT AT WAILEA HOSTED BY MULLIGANS ARE THE MAJOR FUNDRAISERS - THE REST OF THE MONEY COMES FROM DONATIONS, BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY GRANTS. BECAUSE IT TAKES ALL THAT EFFORT TO BE SURE A CHILD DOESN'T GO HUNGRY. REPORTING FROM KIHEI FOR MAUITVNEWS, I'M JEFF KING.

(on-cam tag) IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP HALE KAU KAU, THEIR WEB SITE SAYS YOU'LL WORK HARD, HAVE FUN AND LEARN A GREAT DEAL ABOUT YOURSELF. THEY ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS, FOOD AND MONEY. TO LEARN MORE, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS.COM

(Turtle Fence)(PiP-Turtle CrossingSign)

J: IN THE PAST 15 YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST THREE HUGE TURTLES HIT AND KILLED BY CARS ALONG NORTH KIHEI ROAD WHILE THEY WERE TRYING TO FIND A PLACE TO NEST AND LAY THEIR EGGS. IN THE PAST 10 YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST A HALF-DOZEN FENCE PROJECTS TO KEEP THE TURTLES SAFE. THIS LATEST PROJECT LOOKS TO HAVE THE BEST SUCCESS.

THE FENCE IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT HUGE AND CRITICALLY ENDANGERED HAWKSBILL TURTLES FRAM CRAWLING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, AND TO ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH. THE HEIGHT OF THE FENCE'S LOWER RAIL WAS CALCULATED TO PREVENT AN ADULT FEMALE TURTLE FROM GETTING UNDER IT WHILE SHE'S LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO NEST. WHEN THEY DO COMEASHORE TO NEST, THEY COME AT NIGHT. THESE TURTLES PREFER HIGHER GROUND -ALONG VEGETATION WHEN THEY LAY THEIR EGGS. WORK CREWS FROM MAUI COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER ALONG WITH COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND A FEW MILLION BUGS BEGAN THE PROJECT JANUARY 28TH.

(CG: Calvin Willis, Maint. Spec., USFW, Kealia Pond NWR Complex)

CW02: "My crew today is from M-Triple-C and they're here to save turtles. They're putting their hearts into it. The guards are great. Very professional. They're a great bunch.

THE MATERIAL IS PURCHASED IN PART BY A DONATION FROM ALEXANDER AND BALDWIN OF $15,000. BECAUSE OF THE TERRAIN, THEY DON'T KNOW IF THEY'LL HAVE ENOUGH OF THE TOUGH PLASTIC LUMBER TO MAKE IT ALL THE ALONG THE ROAD TO SUGAR BEACH. PLUS THEY HAVE TO SAVE SOME.

cw01: "Some of it's going to be for the parking area up there once we finish it and get all the permits and things to finish it."

WILLIS SAID WITHOUT THE M-TRIPLE-C CREW THEY WOULDN'T BE HALF AS FAR AS THEY'VE COME. THEY COULD STILL USE HELP, SO IF YOU'D LIKE TO VOLUNTEER, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEB SITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM. THE TARGET COMPLETION DATE IS FEBRUARY 15TH.

(ON-CAM TAG) INCIDENTALLY, YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW IT BUT MOLOKINI - THAT TINY CRATER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ALALAKEIKI CHANNEL - IS AN "OVERLAY" REFUGE UNDER THE CARE OF THE KEALIA POND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. AND A REMINDER THAT MOLOKINI IS CLOSED THIS FRIDAY, SO THAT THE NAVY CAN DETONATE THREE OLD WORLD WAR TWO ERA BOMBS - TO KEEP THEM FROM GOING OFF BY THEMSELVES. THE UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE,. DISCOVERED LAST YEAR, IS ON SORE AND UP THE BLUFF QUITE A WAYS - AROUND THE 300-FOOT ELEVATION. STILL, THE COAST GUARD WILL ENFORCE A ONE-NAUTICAL-MILE BARRIER AROUND MOLOKINI UNTIL THE DEED IS DONE - A PERIOD OF UP TO 10 HOURS.

(water use)(PiP-Rain)

JY: RECORD RAINFALL DRENCHED HAWAII OVER THE WEEKEND. WHILE THERE WERE STILL SOME PRETTY GOOD DOWNPOURS ON MONDAY - THE BIG RAINS HIT OVER THE WEEKEND - ESPECIALLY ON THE BIG ISLAND AND ON KAUAI.

(FF-VO-CG)

THE WETTEST SPOT ON EARTH, MOUNT WAIALEALE, RECEIVED TWO FEET OF RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND, AND HANALEI WAS DRENCHED WITH MORE THAN TEN INCHES OF RAIN. BUT THE UNBELIEVABLE NUMBERS COME FROM THE BIG ISLAND, WHERE THE WAIAKEA EXPERIMENTAL STATION RAIN GAUGE RECORDED NEARLY FOUR FEET OF RAIN IN 72 HOURS. WAIAKEA UKA GOT NEARLY THREE FEET OF RAIN AND THE HILO AIRPORT TWO FEET OF RAIN. HERE ON MAUI, THE WET WAILUAIKI STREAM WAS SLAMMED BY MORE THAN 13 INCHES OF RAIN WHILE THE PU'U KUKUI WATERSHED IN KAHALAWAI RECEIVED JUST UNDER ONE FOOT OF RAIN BETWEEN FRIDAY AND MONDAY MORNING.

(on-cam) THE ENTIRE STATE RECEIVED SOME RAIN, AND THAT EASED THE BURDEN ON AQUIFERS AND RESERVOIRS LAST WEEK. DEPARTMENT OF WATER SUPPLY DIRECTOR JEFF ENG SAYS WATER PRODUCTION FOR MAUI COUNTY WAS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE WEEK BEFORE - AND CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AT THIS TIME.

(FF-VO-CG) CENTRAL AND SOUTH MAUI DIDN'T RECEIVE QUITE AS MUCH RAIN AS THE PREVIOUS WEEK, SO USE WAS UP SLIGHTLY FROM THE WEEK BEFORE. WATER USE DROPPED THE MOST ON THE LAHAINA SIDE.

(on-cam)WATER USE FOR THE SAME PERIOD IN 2007 WAS ABOUT THREE MILLION GALLONS A DAY HIGHER.

(Upcountry Meters)(PiP-WaterMeter)

J: WATER USERS UPCOUNTRY SHOULD NOT BE ALARMED IF THEY SEE WORKERS AT THEIR METER SOME TIME OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. A CONTRACTOR WILL BE CHANGING OUT THE OLD TRANSPONDERS IN WATER METERS IN ULUPALAKUA, KANAIO, KEOKEA AND POLIPOLI. THE WORK WILL BE DONE BY PACIFIC METER SERVICES, AND THEIR EMPLOYEES WILL BE WEARING LIME GREEN SAFETY VESTS AND I.D. BADGES. THEY WILL ALSO BE USING G-P-S TECHNOLOGY TO PINPOINT THE EXACT LOCATION OF EVERY METER. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS, CALL PACIFIC METER SERVICES AT THE NUMBER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.

(Toss to C Block)

JY: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS, THE M-I-L DIVISION ONE TITLE ALREADY BELONGED TO LAHAINALUNA - BUT THE BALDWIN BEARS PLAYED THEM LIKE IT WAS THE FINAL GAME OF THE PLAYOFFS. KALAPANA HAS DETAILS AND HIGHLIGHTS UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

J: THEN HOLLY CHUNG JOINS US WITH DETAILS EVERYTHING FROM TRUE LOVE, TO TROUBLE TO THE TANGO. DETAILS IN COMING ATTRACTIONS WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(sports) (PiP-Sports)

K: I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY DO IT...BUT SOME FAMILIES JUST SEEM TO KEEP CHURNING OUT CHAMPIONS, DON'T THEY?

ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS, I'M KALAPANA MANNING.

WELL, OK, MAYBE NOT...BUT I WOULDN'T MIND HAVING A FAMILY TROPHY SHELF WITH THE KIND OF HARDWARE THEIRS MUST HAVE. PLANET EARTH IS STILL REELING FROM THE FOOTBALL UPSET OF THE MILLENNIUM - AND EVEN THOUGH THE MILLENNIUM IS BARELY EIGHT YEARS OLD, IT WAS STILL EXCITING AT THE NEW YORK GIANTS UPSET THE NEW ENGLAND "FORGONE CONCLUSION" PATRIOTS 17 TO 14. IN ADDITION TO MAKING SPORTS HISTORY, THE GAME MADE FINANCIAL HISTORY AS WELL WITH 30-SECOND COMMERCIALS COSTING MORE THAN THREE AND A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS...AND ATTENDANCE - BEFORE YOU COUNT THE SCALPERS - RAKING IN MORE THAN A HUNDRED AND 50 MILLION DOLLARS.

BUT JUST TO PROVE THAT IT DOESN'T COST MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO EXPERIENCE AN EXCITING GAME, CONSIDER THE MATCHUP LAST FRIDAY NIGHT BETWEEN LAHAINALUNA - ALREADY DIVION ONE BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL CHAMPS, AND THE UPPITY BALDWIN BEARS - WHO HAD ALREADY DEFEATED LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONS, THE KAMEHAMEHA WARRIORS, EARLIER IN THE WEEK. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HO-HUM GAME. TRY TELLING THAT TO THE BEARS!

(VO) TO BALDWIN GYM WE GO AND THAT IS NOT A TYPO! THE BALDWIN BEARS WERE UP 39-16 AT THE HALF. THIRD QUARTER ACTION IN THIS EXTREMELY PHYSICAL MATCHUP AS LAHAINALUNA'S TY CARTER FOULS LINCOLN SETO. THAT HAPPENED A LOT AS SETO SCORED A SEASON-HIGH 30 POINTS IN THIS ONE. WITH THE LUNAS TRAILING , THEY WENT ON THE DEFENSIVE AND PINNED THE BEARS IN THE BACK COURT A NUMBER OF TIMES. BUT WHEN THE BEARS BROKE FREE, THEY WERE RELENTLESS ON REBOUNDING AND FOLLOW UP SHOTS LIKE THIS CLUTCH TWO FROM GEORGE FIRMIGNAC. AND THIS INTERCEPTION AND PASS FROM SETO TO BALDWIN'S MICAH SHIBANO FOR TWO. LUNAS ON A RUN NOW AS TY CARTER PASSES TO NUTI POUSIMA AND GOES STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE FOR TWO AND LAHAINALUNA CLOSES THE GAP LATE IN THE GAME.

IN THE END, THOUGH, BALDWIN HAD LOTS OF THESE AND THE LUNAS HAD TOO MANY OF THESE. BUT IT WASN'T FOR LACK OF TRYING. LUNAS CARTER TO POUSIMA AGAIN FOR THE BASKET AND THE FOUL. AND THAT'S PAUL SALVADOR TRYING FOR THREE FROM NBA-LAND WITH LESS THAN A MINUTE TO GO. JOHN CRAIG TO SALVADOR AND ITS GOOD FOR THREE...BUT BAD FOR THE BUZZER. AND THE BEARS UPSET LAHAINALUNA 74-65 IN A THRILLER.

(ff-vo-cg) THAT WRAPPED UP THE REGULAR SEASON WITH THE LUNAS KEEPING THE TOP SPOT IN SPIT OF THIS LOSS. BALDWIN IMPROVES TO 9 AND THREE AND KAMEHAMEHA FALLS TO THIRD SPOT. KING KEKAULIKE AND MAUI ROUND OUT THE STANDINGS.

(ON-CAM) IN DIVISION TWO IT WASN'T SO EASY AS LANA'I HANDED MOLOKAI THEIR FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON LAST FRIDAY NIGHT, FORCING A REMATCH FOR THE D-TWO TITLE SATURDAY NIGHT. ON THEIR HOME COURT SATURDAY NIGHT, THE PINE LADS DID IT AGAIN, DEFEATING THE FARMERS 51-39 AND - IN THE PROCESS -EARNING THEIR FIRST DIVISION TWO TITLE SINCE JOINING THE M-I-L IN 1984.

(ff-vo-cg) THAT PUTS LANAI AT THE TOP OF DIVISION TWO AT NINE AND ONE. MOLOKAI FINISHES AT 8 AND 2 AND SEABURY HALL IS IN THIRD AT 7 AND 3. KA'AHUMANU HOU, SAINT ANTHONY AND HANA ROUND OUT THE STANDINGS.

(ON-CAM) UP NEXT FOR THE PINE LADS, THE M-I-L TOURNAMENT, THEN ON TO STATE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. AND - A LITTLE "HOOP TRIVIA" FOR YOU - NOW THAT THE REGULAR SEASON HAS ENDED THERE WAS ONE UNDEFEATED TEAM THIS YEAR IN ALL OF M-I-L BASKETBALL. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS OF KING KEKAULIKE FOR THEIR UNDEFEATED SEASON.

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AMAZING LADY BEARS IN GIRLS VARSITY PADDLING - GOING FROM NO WINS BEFORE - EVER - TO BEING UNDEFEATED THIS YEAR, AND CLAIMING THE TOP SPOT AT THREE AND OH AND, WITH IT, A SLOT IN THE STATE HIGH SCHOOL REGATTA.

AND THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS FOR THIS WEEK. IF YOUR TEAM HAS A SEASON - OR SPECIAL SPORTING EVENT COMING UP AND YOU'D LIKE TO GET THE WORD OUT, THEN GET THE WORD TO US FIRST. SEND YOUR NOTICES TO SPORTS AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM. WE'LL DO OUR VERY BEST TO GET A FILM CREW OUT TO CAPTURE THE ACTION. FOR MAUI TV NEWS I'M KALAPANA.
