J: DEPENDING ON WHO YOU TALK TO - OR LISTEN TO - THE ECONOMY MAY BE BEGINNING TO REBOUND. BUT, JUST IN CASE, THERE ARE THOSE WHO SAY YOU CAN PROSPER IN THIS RECESSION.
PLUS, ANOTHER HAWAIIAN FAMILY IS COMING HOME. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HANDS OVER THE KEYS AND A BLESSING.
(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK, AND WE'LL HAVE MORE, PLUS A RUNDOWN OF THE BIGGEST EVENTS COMING TO MAUI THIS WEEKEND IN COMING ATTRACTIONS ON MAUI TV NEWS.
Open (CENTER UP)
J: ALOHA EVERYONE, AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING. WHETHER THE WORST OF OUR ECONOMIC WOES IS BEHIND US OR STILL AHEAD OF US SEEMS TO BE A MATTER OF STATISTICS AS MUCH AS IT DOES OPINION.
(Turn to cam) BUT AT A WELL-ATTENDED SEMINAR ON MAUI LAST FRIDAY, THE MESSAGE WAS: THAT DOESN'T MATTER. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT WE'RE IN THE RECESSION NOW - AND THAT ACTUALLY MAY BE GOOD NEWS.
(TAKE RECESSION PKG) LOOKING AROUND THIS CROWDED ROOM, YOU SEE YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS AND CO-WORKERS - PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU AND ME - ALL FACING THE SAME CHALLENGES OF A RECESSION THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE ENDING SOON. IN A TIME WHEN WE'RE ALL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS, THE "PROSPERING IN THE RECESSION" WORKSHOP AT THE GRAND WAILEA LAST FRIDAY CAME AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME. AUTHOR, COACH AND CONSULTANT LES HEWITT BOILED THE MILLIONS OF "WHAT IF'S" DOWN TO A FEW VERY SPECIFIC FACTS - EACH OF WHICH, WHEN ADDRESSED INDIVIDUALLY, CAN HELP US GET THROUGH THIS.
Les Hewitt, CEO, Power of Focus, Inc.
LH01: "Your mindset is critical. In other words, your attitude - and how you view things. As I said, this is just an 'event,' one of many you'll have in your life. And if you treat it that way and it's not a disaster - and we have two choices, basically, we can say 'Bring it on, I'm going to make it the best opportunity, and do everything I possibly can. I'm going to ride the wave with it,' or 'I'm going to fold my tent and quit'."
HE FOCUSED EVEN A BIT MORE - SPECIFICALLY ON THE BAD NEWS THAT COULD BE TURNED INTO GOOD NEWS FOR SOME DURING THE CURRENT ECONOMIC SLUMP.
LH02: "I think for a lot of people there's great opportunities. They may lose a job. They may lose a business but often that opens up opportunities many creative things they may end up doing. And it's not easy. I'm not trying to minimize this. It's obviously very, very challenging for a lot of people losing jobs. Foreclosures. They're all very real. But it's all about your attitude and how you choose to deal with it."
ATTITUDE IS ONE THING - BUT THERE ARE PRACTICAL STEPS TOWARD IMPROVING YOUR ATTITUDE, ON THE WAY TOWARD IMPROVING YOUR LOT IN LIFE.
LH03: "Awareness is the first step for any progress. I use that formula: The Four Fundamentals, and readjusting your most important goals and, you've got to be realistic about this - you can't have 'oie in the ky' golas in this economy. For some people it's just 'if I break even this year,' or 'if I retain my job' that's something that's going to be good. The second is focusing on your top priorities, really focusing in on 'how do I add value'?"
AS HEWITT MENTIONED, THERE ARE FOUR FUNDAMENTALS - EACH HIGHLY LOGICAL AND EACH DEMANDING FOCUS. AS HE SAYS AT HIS SEMINARS, THE WINNERS FOCUS AND FOLLOW THROUGH. REPORTING FROM WAILEA FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.
( house blessing)(PiP-Marlene with Keys)
J: SPEAKING OF PROSPERING IN LEAN TIMES, THERE'S A FAMILY IN WAIEHU THAT HAS LEARNED, FIRST-HAND, THE BENEFITS OF FOCUS AND FOLLOW-THROUGH. AND THEY ALSO KNOW THEY WOULDN'T BE MOVING INTO THEIR BRAND NEW HOME IF IT HADN'T ALSO BEEN FOR THE POWER OF FRIENDS.
(Take Habitat pkg) 'OHANA, HOALOHA, LOKAHI, KOKUA...IT'S ALL EVIDENT IN THIS LITTLE NEIGHBORHOOD ON AKULE PLACE. MARLENE PERALTA WAS SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY LAST FRIDAY TO SHARE IN THE BLESSING OF HER NEW HOME.
IT TOOK TWO YEARS TWO YEARS TO BUILD. SHE'S BEEN HERE WORKING ON HER FUTURE HOME ALMOST EVERY DAY, BUT EVEN TODAY, AS SHE IS HANDED THE KEYS, THE REALITY STILL HASN'T SET IN.
Marlene Peralta, Homeowner
MP01: "Not yet, but it's getting there..."
AFTER THE PULE BY KAHU GREG DE LA CRUZ, HE ANNOINTED THE NEW HALE WITH OIL. AS HE CHANTED E HOMAI, MARLENE GOT THE CHANCE TO LOOK AROUND. SHE SAID THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT FRIENDS - ESPECIALLY HER FRIENDS AT LOKAHI PACIFIC.
MP02: " Lokahi was a big help. I work for them. We're like a tight family there. When there are needs, they're always there for it. For the community in general. And for doing community service - that's their goal - to help out other people - families. And they were part of my family on the building of this - my home."
Deanna Kramer, HR Manager, Lokahi Pacific
DK01: Well, to see it from the ground, up, and the fact that she just got her keys today is very awesome and exciting. You know everybody would feel that excitement, just to be part of it. It's just a good feeling. You just want to give. You get what you give, so..."
LOKAHI PACIFIC STAFFERMEMBERS GAVE UP A SATURDAY EVERY MONTH FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS AND IF ANYONE COULDN'T MAKE IT, THEY PAID FOR SNACKS, LUNCH OR DRINKS.
MARLENE'S DEAREST FRIEND, ANDREA RAZO HAS BEEN THERE FROM THE FIRST DAY THROUGH NOW. IT'S NOT ANDREA'S NEW HOME, BUT SHE IS SHARING THE MOMENT WITH MARLENE AND HERE'S WHY.
Andrea Razo, Friend/Volunteer
AR01: "Because. It's her dream to have her own home. And to be a part of this , I learned so much. I learned so much - not only skill-wise - and being part of the family, not only with her but with everyone else around here. It's awesome to see the changes in people's faces. Yeah, I love it."
AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, SHERRI DODSON HAS HANDED KEYS TO DOZENS OF MAUI FAMILIES, A JOB, SHE SAYS, IT JUST ABOUT THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD.
Sherri Dodson, Exec. Dir., Habitat for Humanity, Maui
SD01: "You know it is. There's a lot of work that goes into it by our staff, by the families, but when the end result is that you're changing someone's life by putting them in a safe, decent home, you can't complain. As long as we can continue to have these house dedications to get us through, that's great."
MP04: "Habitat's been a blessing. Not just for me but for all families in need."
IN THE SHADOW OF KAHALAWAI, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS GATHER TO FEAST IN THE PERALTA'S NEW BACK YARD.
MP 03: "I love the neighborhood /// We're pretty tight here. Everybody knows each other. We know each wekness and strongness so it will work out really nice here."
AS THEY SAY ON TV, WELCOME PERALTA FAMILY. WELCOME HOME. REPORTING FROM WAIEHU FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.
(ON-CAM TAG) THE PERALTAS ARE THE 24TH MAUI FAMILY THAT HAS MOVED INTO BRAND NEW HOMES, THANKS TO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. IF YOU'D LIKE TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE PROJECT, OR TO FIND OUT IF YOU MIGHT QUALIFY, GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.
J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, IT'S THE ULTIMATE IN RECYCLING - THE ART OF TRASH OPENS TO RAVE REVIEWS. AND, HURRICANE SEASON ARRIVES IN JUST DAYS. ARE YOU READY? WE'LL HAVE THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.
(Art of Trash) (PiP-Art of Trash)
J: IT'S USUALLY QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT JUST TO GET PEOPLE TO PULL STUFF OUT OF THEIR TRASH TO RECYCLE IT INSTEAD OF FILLING UP THE LANDFILL. BUT THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO TAKE THAT TO THE EXTREME...TURNING TRASH INTO ART. AND, IT'S EXTREMELY GOOD ART!
(TAKE ART OF TRASH Pkg) FRIDAY NIGHT, CENTER COURT AT THE MAUI MALL. YOU KINDA GET THE IMPRESSION PEOPLE ARE HERE TO HAVE FUN. THE 2009 ART OF TRASH EXHIBITION OPENED WITH A FASHION SHOW...FEATURING DISCARDED FISH NET AND VEGETABLE BAG EVENING WEAR, AND A PETITE PARASOL AND MATCHING ENSEMBLE...FROM SAFEWAY BAGS.
THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE EVENTS THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO SMILE. EITHER BECAUSE EVERYTHING WAS FUN, FUNNY OR CUTE, OR JUST TO ASK YOURSELF - WHAT THE HECK IS THAT? IN FACT, WE ASKED THE EVENT'S DIRECTORS IF THERE WAS ANYONE - OR ANYTHING IN THIS SHOW THAT'S SERIOUS.
Wilma Nakamura, Art of Trash coordinator
WN01: "Serious? Uh,, me. No, Um let me see, serious? I hope not."
Ira Ono, Art of Trash Juror
IO01:"Absolutely not. Whate are you talking about? This show is goofy and fun and that's why people are responding to it so beautifully."
IRA ONO WAS THE JUROR FOR THIS YEAR'S SHOW. HE PROFESSES TO KNOW FROM WHENCE HE JUDGETH - BASED ON DECADES OF, UH, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE.
IO02: "I've been a dumpster diver for over 40 years, so I'm very attuned to what is manufactured, or created not from recycled objects, and this show really has it all."
JUST LIKE THE TRASH WE THROW AWAY CHANGES OVER TIME, SO DOES THE ART OF TRASH.
WN02: "It's a little different every year. We have a whole new crop of artists. People come out of the woodwork - from everywhere - from Hana from everywhere. It's so totally unpredictable - like that fashion show you just saw."
SOME 100 ARTISTS SUBMITTED WORKS THIS YEAR - FROM THAT AROUND 50 WERE SELECTED FOR DISPLAY HERE. ENTRY FEES GO TO AWARDS. THIS YEAR THE JURORS AWARD WAS ALSO THE MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT SOURCE, APPROPRIATELY TITLED, "THE JUNK BAND." IT HAD TO BE DIFFICULT TO SELECT WINNERS BECAUSE THERE WAS PRETTY MUCH ONE OF EVERYTHING. THIS LADY LIKED "STYRO-MAN." FAUCETORIS WAS THE SECOND PLACE WINNER, AND THE OVERALL WINNER...WAS THE NICES ONE OF THESE YOU'D EVER SEE. THERE WAS ONE OF THESE...AND WHAT ART OF TRASH SHOW WOULD BE COMPLETE WITHOUT THIS...OR THIS?
AND THE GOAL - BESIDES JUST BEING FUN - IS ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, NOT GETTING RICH. IRA GAVE US AN IDEA OF HOW RICH THE WINNING ARTISTS WILL GET.
IO03: "Gosh, we could go to Savers and have a blast with the prize money!"
AND, HEY, WOULDN'T THIS TRASHBAG AND NEWSPAPER GOWN TURN SOME HEADS, TOO? REPORTING FROM KAHULUI FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.
(ON-CAM TAG) THE ART OF TRASH EXHIBIT IS OPEN DAILY THROUGH JUNE 20TH IN THE MAUI MALL. ADMISSION IS FREE.
J: THE CENTRAL PACIFIC HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS THIS COMING MONDAY. WHILE FORECASTERS ARE PREDICTING A BELOW AVERAGE STORM SEASON, WITH THREE TO FIVE TROPICAL SYSTEMS IN THE FORECAST, THEY KNOW - LIKE MOST PEOPLE DO - THAT IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE BIG ONE HITS.
(FF-CG-VO) IF STORMS ORIGINATE IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC, THESE ARE THE NAMES THEY'LL BE GIVEN. OF COURSE STORMS THAT ORIGINATE IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC AND MAKE TO OUR WATERS KEEP THE NAMES THEY GET FROM WHERE THEY ORIGINATE.

CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICIALS RECOMMEND HAVING ENOUGH SUPPLIES STORED UP FOR AT LEAST FIVE DAYS, INCLUDING: BOTTLED WATER AND NON-PERISHABLE FOOD, BATTERIES AND A PORTABLE RADIO, CASH - IN CASE BANKS OR ATMS AREN'T AVAILABLE, A FIRST AID KIT AND ALL YOUR MEDICATIONS. (ON-CAM) THERE ARE TWO EVENTS COMING UP TO GET YOU AS READY AS POSSIBLE. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND THE PACIFIC DISASTER CENTER ARE OFFERING A HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP THIS FRIDAY, THE 29TH, FROM 3 TO 5 P.M.
