B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

C: AND I'M CYNDI MAYO DAVIS. OF ALL THE BEAUTIFUL AND WONDERFUL THINGS THAT MAKE MAUI SO SPECIAL, THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CANOES HAS TO BE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST.

(turn to cam)(PiP: Festival of Canoes)

C: THE NINTH ANNUAL OBSERVANCE WAS A LITTLE SMALLER IN SIZE THAN IN YEARS PAST - BUT NO LESS COLORFUL, EXCITING AND MOVING. AS THE FESTIVAL WRAPPED UP, MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WAS THERE.

C. C: STAY TUNED LATER IN THIS NEWSCAST FOR A RECAP OF THE PARADE OF CANOES THAT ROLLED DOWN FRONT STREET IN LAHAINA LAST SATURDAY MORNING.
D. J: FLAGS ACROSS MAUI COUNTY WERE AT HALF-STAFF FOR THE SECOND DURING THE MONTH OF MAY - BUT JUST FOR HALF-A-DAY. ON MEMORIAL DAY, BY FEDERAL ORDER, FLAGS WERE RAISED TO HALF-STAFF FROM SUNRISE UNTIL NOON, TO HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN SERVICE TO THEIR COUNTRY. THEN AT NOON, FLAGS WERE OPRDERED TO FULL-STAFF FOR THE BALANCE OF THE DAY TO HONOR THOSE WHO STILL SERVE. TWO MAUI NATIVE SONS HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE IN THE CURRENT WAR. MASTER SERGEANT KELLY BOLOR OF LAHAINA DIED IN A HELICOPTER CRASH IN IRAQ IN NOVEMBER, TWO THOUSAND-THREE. AND PRIVATE FIRST CLASS JAY S. CAJIMAT - ALSO OF LAHAINA - DIED JUST LAST MONTH FROM INJURIES SUFFERED FROM AN EXPLOSION IN BAGHDAD.

E. C: GOT PLANS TO BOARD THE SUPERFERRY FOR HONOLULU IN JULY? THINK AGAIN. THE OFFICIAL WORD... "AT LEAST A MONTH." THAT MEANS THE FIRST INTERISLAND VOYAGE OF THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY WON'T HAPPEN BEFORE AUGUST FIRST. IN ADDITION, THE COMPANY HAD PLANNED TO BEGIN ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS BEFORE THE END OF MAY. NOW YOU CAN'T SCHEDULE A RIDE UNTIL - QUOTE - EARLY SUMMER - UNQUOTE, WITH SERVICE PUSHED BACK UNTIL LATER THIS SUMMER.

HAWAII SUPERFERRY PRESIDENT JOHN GARIBALDI SAYS THE VESSEL IS STILL BEING WORKED ON AT IT'S MOBILE, ALABAMA, SHIPYARD. BEYOND THAT, DETAILS ARE A LITTLE NON-SPECIFIC, BUT IT APPEARS THAT COAST GUARD CERTIFICATION MAY BE THE REASON FOR SOME LATE STAGE SAFETY AND SYSTEM REFINEMENTS.

MEANWHILE, THE COMPANY SAYS IT'S MAKING HEADWAY WITH OTHER STARTUP PLANS - INCLUDING THE HIRING OF SOME TWO HUNDRED WORKERS, SUPPORTING THE COMPANY ON MAUI, OAHU AND KAUAI.

F. J: WHILE THE LAUNCH DATE FOR THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY MAY BE POSTPONED, WORK TO PREPARE KAHULUI HARBOR IS NOT SLOWING DOWN AT ALL.

(vo) THE SUPERFERRY VEHICLE LOADING BARGE, MANAIAKALANI, WAS DELIVERED JUST A FEW DAYS AGO TO THE PORT OF KAHULUI, AND SECURED TO A PORTION OF PIER TWO THAT - UP UNTIL NOW - HAS BEEN KIND OF QUIET.

(SOT)

(vo) AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF THE CRANE BARGE TO INSTALL RAMPS...THEN ANOTHER BARGE WITH THOSE RAMP PARTS ABOARD, THE HARBOR GOT SO BUSY LAST WEEK THAT THE CRUISE SHIP HAD TO BACK IN TO THE END OF PIER ONE BECAUSE THE SUGAR SHIP HAD TAKEN THE PRIME SPACE. THE END OF PIER TWO IS NOW A PARKING LOT FOR CONTAINERS USED BY YOUNG BROTHERS. IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, FENCES AND BARRIERS WILL SPRING UP SEPARATING CARGO CONTAINERS FROM CITIZENS IN THIS POST-9-11 ERA.

(SOT)

(vo) THE FORMER VALLEY ISLE MOTORS ANNEX LOT WILL BE THE STAGING AND INSPECTION AREA FOR CARS AND TRUCKS PREPARING TO BOARD. THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE TO GET READY. WHEN THINGS ARE ROLLING, INSPECTORS HERE WILL BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR CONTRABAND, AND ALSO FOR PLANTS, ANIMALS OR BUGS THAT MAY BE MORE EASILY SPREAD BETWEEN ISLANDS. PFISTER SAYS THE THREAT OF INVASIVE ALGAE BEING BROUGHT TO MAUI ON THE HULL OF THE SUPERFERRY LIKELY WON'T BE A PROBLEM.

(SOT)

(vo) A BARGE - IF YOU WILL - THAT HOLDS BETWEEN ONE HUNDRED AND TEN AND A HUNDRED AND FIFTY CARS. THE HARBORMASTER ADDED THAT - SHORT OF THE PEOPLE MOVING TO MAUI FROM OAHU - ALL OR NEARLY ALL OF THOSE CARS AND TRUCKS WILL ALSO BE LEAVING THE ISLAND AFTER A WHILE. AND SPEAKING OF DRIVERS, THE SUPERFERRY WON'T REQUIRE A HARBOR PILOT. AFTER A DOZEN OR SO MONITORED ENTRANCES AND EXITS FROM KAHULUI HARBOR, THE FERRY'S SKIPPER WILL BE HARBOR CERTIFIED.

(on-cam) FOR PROGRESS ON THE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF THE ALAKAI, FOLLOW THE LINKS TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY FROM OUR WEB SITE AT MAUITVNEWS- DOT-COM.

G. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...THEY'RE BIG, BEAUTIFUL AND SLOW, AND THEY'RE DUE TO NEST ON MAUI SOON. VOLUNTEERS SCRAMBLE TO PROTECT ENDANGERED TURTLES.

C: AND "CITIZEN JOURNALISM" - IS IT MORE THAN JUST BEING IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME WITH YOUR CAMCORDER AND ACCESS TO YOU-TUBE? ONE NEWS VETERAN ON MAUI THINKS SO, AND HE THINKS YOU MIGHT, TOO.

J: AND IT MAY COME AS NO SURPRISE THAT "THE PRETTIEST BABY IN THE PACIFIC LIVES RIGHT HERE ON MAUI. BUT IT MAY SURPRISE YOU WHO SHE IS. THAT STORY AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK.

(break)

(b block)

H. C: THE NORTH KIHEI BEACH FRONTING KEALIA POND IS A LITTLE SAFER THESE DAYS - PARTICULARLY IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE A TURTLE...OR A MOTORIST.

(vo) DOZENS OF MAUI VOLUNTEERS TURNED OUT TO REPAIR THE FENCE ORIGINALLY ERECTED TO KEEP NESTING HONU 'EA - HAWKSBILL TURTLES, FROM CRAWLING TOO FAR UP THE BEACH AND ACCIDENTALLY INTO THE PATH OF TRAFFIC. IT WAS THE SECOND WEEKEND OF REPAIR WORK ON ONE AND THREE QUARTER MILES OF FENCE..FENCE THAT HAS BEEN DAMAGED BY THE ELEMENTS, WIND, SAND...BUT MOSTLY PEOPLE. SO WHAT ARE THEY USING THAT'S DIFFERENT THIS TIME?

(SOT)

(vo) MORE THAN FIFTY VOLUNTEERS TURNED OUT TO HELP OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, INCLUDING A GROUP OF BOY SCOUTS - HELPING FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT WEEKEND - WHO GOT A WELL-DESERVED BREAK FROM THE HOT SUN BEFORE GETTING BACK TO WORK. AND THERE'S STILL PLENTY OF WORK AHEAD. BUT IT'S WORTH IT. AT STAKE ARE THE LIVES OF HONU 'EA, HAWKSBILL TURTLES WHO COME ASHORE TO NEST. AT LEAST TWO PREGNANT TURTLES HAVE BEEN STRUCK BY CARS AND KILLED SINCE 1993. THE FENCE ORIGINALLY WENT UP IN 1997. SINCE 1997, THE HAWKSBILL RECOVERY PROJECT HAS BEEN CREDITED WITH SAVING THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF HONU EA HATCHLINGS THROUGH VOLUNTEER NEST WATCH PATROLS AND STATE-SANCTIONED NEST EXCAVATION PROGRAMS.

(citizen Journalism)
I. J: VIDEO IMAGES LIKE THOSE USED TO BE CONFINED TO SOMEBODY'S HOME MOVIES...BUT SOMEONE WITH A VIDEO CAMERA IN 1991 CHANGED ALL THAT.

(vo) THE BEATING OF RODNEY KING BY POLICE OFFICERS - CAUGHT ON TAPE - USHERED IN A NEW FORCE IN MEDIA. THE IDEA OF "CITIZEN JOURNALISM" WAS BORN. WITH OUTLETS LIKE YOUTUBE EXPLODING ON THE INTERNET, THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICE AT AKAKU - MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION THINKS THAT CITIZENS ON MAUI HAVE ENOUGH TO SHOW AND TELL, THAT HE'S DEDICATING A NEW SHOW TO IT. VETERAN CNN AND PBS CORRESPONDENT AND PRODUCER JAY APRIL WILL LAUNCH "MAUI DAILY," ON ONE OF THEIR COMMUNITY ACCESS CHANNELS BY SUMMER. HE JUST LED HIS FIRST SEMINAR FOR PRODUCERS ON THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND HOW OF VIDEO JOURNALISM. ONCE UP AND RUNNING HERE'S WHAT HE EXPECTS.

(SOT)

(con't VO) AKAKU IS UNDERGOING UPGADES AND RENOVATIONS TO THE DAIRY ROAD FACILITIES IN KAHULUI, INCLUDING EXPANSION INTO ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR PRODUCERS.

(pretty Baby)
J. C: ALL PARENTS THINK THEIR KIDS ARE THE CUTEST - AND THAT'S THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE. BUT HOW MANY PARENTS CAN ACTUALLY BACK THAT UP? ONE KIHEI MOM HAS ENOUGH TROPHIES AND PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE TO STAKE A SERIOUS CLAIM THAT HERS IS THE PRETTIEST BABY IN THE PACIFIC.

(VO) TAYLOR ANN KU'ULEI DEL ROSARIO MAY ONLY BE 17 MONTHS OLD, BUT LOOK AT THE HARDWARE FILLING UP THE LIVING ROOM SHELF. COMPETING IN BABY BEAUTY PAGEANS EVEN BEFORE SHE COULD WALK, YOUNG TAYLOY MAY BE OBLIVIOUS TO WHAT ALL THE HOOPLA IS ABOUT, BUT HER MOM PROUDLY DETAILS HER RISE TO FAME.

(SOT)

(vo) HAVING APPEARED IN AT LEAST FIVE PAGEANTS SINCE THE RIPE OLD AGE OF FOUR MONTHS, TAYLOR STILL FINDS TIME FOR BARNEY, BUT - MOST OF ALL LOVES TO GO SURFING ON DAD'S LONGBOARD. THAT IS, UNTIL SHE GOT HER OWN BOARD, WHERE SHE LOVES TO LET THE WIND WHIP HER PIGTAILS.

(on-cam) TAYLOR'S MOM ACKNOWLEDGED THAT PAGEANTS CAN GET EXPENSIVE...UNLESS YOU WIN. AND TAYLOR WON A FIVE-HUNDRED DOLLAR SAVINGS BOND ALONG WITH HER LATEST TITLE. SHE ALSO SAYS THE REASON SHE ENTERS THE LITTLE PRINCESS IN PAGEANTS IS TO HELP HER GAIN SELF-CONFIDENCE AND POISE.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

K. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...A MAUI STAR ATHLETE GETS SET TO HANG UP HER MAUI RUNNING SHOES FOR A NEW PAIR AT THE NAVAL ACADEMY - BUT NOT BEFORE REFLECTING ON HER AMAZING M-I-L CAREER.

C: AND JULIE Y JOINS US AFTER THAT WITH THE RUNDOWN OF COMING ATTRACTIONS, INCLUDING APPEARANCES FROM OLD MAN WINTER AND THE NEXT MISS MAUI FILIPINA.

J: THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(break)
(C-Block)

L. K: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS! ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

M-I-L TRACK STAR JUNE ANN LUSK HAS BEEN NAMED TO THE "HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF HONOR." THE GRADUATING BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR IS THE ONLY ATHLETE FROM THE M-I-L TO BE SELECTED AMONG THE STATEWIDE FIELD OF 12 ALL-STARS THIS YEAR. AFTER SETTING RECORDS IN THE M-I-L TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS EARLIER THIS MONTH, JUNE ANN SUFFERED A POSSIBLE TEAR IN AN UPPER THIGH MUSCLE. SHE HAD TO BACK OFF AT THE STATE FINALS - EVEN THOUGH SHE RAN HARD...SOMETHING SHE'LL CONTINUE TO DO AT AT THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY.

(SOT)

WE ASKED HER COACH AT BALDWIN, NEIL TAKEYAMA, IN HIS 30 YEARS, HOW MANY JUNE ANN LUSKS HAVE THERE BEEN?

(SOT)

JUNE ANN LEAVES MAUI IN LESS THAN A MONTH FOR ANAPOLIS, MARYLAND, LEAVING BEHIND QUITE A LEGACY - NOT JUST AT BALDWIN - BUT ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE OF HAWAII.

(SOT)

THAT "SURPRISE," TWO YEARS AGO IS A STATE RECORD THAT STILL STANDS. JUNE ANN WAS ALSO ON BALDWIN'S STATE CHAMPION SOFTBALL TEAM THIS YEAR. SHE HAS RECEIVED FOUR VARSITY LETTERS IN TRACK, FOUR IN SOFTBALL AND ONE IN CROSS COUNTRY. HER FAVORITE SPORT?

(SOT)

SHE EXCELS IN THE CLASSROOM AS WELL, WITH A FINAL QUARTER GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 4.1 AND AN OVERALL GPA OF 3.7. WHILE THERE ARE SOME GREAT MEMORIES AND GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS BEHIND HER, SHE'S PROBABLY NOT DONE YET.

(SOT)

(on-cam) I QUITE AGREE. WELL DONE, JUNE ANN. YOU'VE HELPED MAKE MAUI NO KA OI.

M. ANOTHER LOCAL MAUI ATHLETE WHO HAS TURNED MORE THAN A FEW HEADS IS PROFESSIONAL BIG LEAGUER SHANE VICTORINO. THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES OUTFIELDER HAD A BIG GAME LAST SATURDAY, SMASHING A HOME RUN, A TRIPLE AND A SINGLE...AS WELL AS SCORING THREE RUNS.

(FF-CG) THE NINETEEN-NINETY-NINE GRADUATE OF SAINT ANTHONY'S HIGH SCHOOL HAD A THREE-FOURTEEN BATTING AVERAGE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, HELPING HIS TEAM MOVE PAST THE FIVE-HUNDRED MARK FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON. IT MAY BE A LITTLE PREMATURE, BUT THERE ARE SOME FOLKS WHO THINK SHANE'S NAME SHOULD BE ON THE ALL-STAR BALLOT.

(oncam) INCIDENTALLY, HERE'S A LITTLE TRIVIA FOR YOU - OF COURSE WE'RE EXTREMELY PROUD OF HIM - BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT SHANE VICTORINO IS ACTUALLY THE SECOND NATIVE OF MAUI TO MAKE IT INTO THE MAJORS? THAT'S RIGHT. MAUI-BORN ANTONE DO-REGO HIT TWO-SIXTY-EIGHT IN FOFTY-FOUR GAMES FOR THE SAINT LOUIS BROWNS IN NINETEEN TWENTY-FOUR AND TWENTY-FIVE. "TONY" DO-REGO WAS BORN IN WAILUKU IN 1897. THANKS TO OUR ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT FOR THAT LITTLE GEM. WANT MORE? THERE HAVE BEEN TWENTY-SEVEN HAWAII-BORN PLAYERS WHO HAVE MADE IT INTO MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

N. AND STILL ANOTHER SON OF MAUI MADE SPORTS HEADLINES THIS WEEK. DAVIS KANE LEFT THE VALLEY ISLE FIVE YEARS AGO TO ATTEND KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS - OAHU - AND HAS JUST FINISHED UP HIS FRESHMAN YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII. SATURDAY KANE SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE MEN'S FIFTY-METER FREESTYLE COMPETITION AT THE SAKAMOTO INVITATIONAL SWIM MEET IN WAILUKU WITH A BLISTERING TIME OF TWENTY-THREE-POINT-NINE-TWO SECONDS.

O. (vo) MEANWHILE, ACROSS TOWN, THE TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL WAILEA OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT BROUGHT OUT SOME OF THE BEST RECREATIONAL AND CLUB PLAYERS FROM ACROSS HAWAII OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. FINAL RESULTS WERE NOT IN BY OUR DEADLINE, BUT KIHEI'S WAYNE BERRY WAS ONE OF THE EARLY LEADERS IN MEN'S SINGLES COMPETITION. AND BESIDES, WE JUST WANTED TO SHOW YOU WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE THIS IS TO PLAY TENNIS.

P. (on cam) AND SPEAKING OF DEADLINES, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. LET US KNOW - AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR TEAM'S UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS. SEND YOUR NOTICES TO "SPORTS-AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM" AND WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO GET A FILM CREW OUT TO COVER YOUR GAME.

THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. NOW HERE'S JULIE Y WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS.
