A. J: WITH A UNANIMOUS "AYE," A RECORD-SETTING BUDGET IS VOTED IN PLACE FOR MAUI COUNTY FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR. BUT JUST HOW DO YOU SPEND A HALF-BILLION DOLLARS IN ONLY A YEAR?

C: WE'LL HAVE THE LATEST UPDATES THIS WEEK ON HOW MAUI IS PREPARING FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY...AND WHETHER WE'RE READY OR NOT.

J: IN THE MOOD FOR A LITTLE SHOPPING? IF DEVELOPERS HAVE THEIR WAY, THERE WILL BE SIX NEW MAJOR SHOPPING CENTERS ON MAUI OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

C: IN SPORTS, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF LAST SEASON - AS THE BEST THERE IS.

J: AND, JULIE Y IS HERE TO TELL US WHETHER OR NOT THE "RUMORS" ARE COMING TRUE.  THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

C: AND I'M CYNDI MAYO DAVIS. THE NUMBER IS STAGGERING: FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY-NINE MILLION, SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. THAT'S THE COUNTY'S BUDGET FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR.

(turn to cam)(PiP: New Budget)

C: THAT SPENDING WORKS OUT TO ABOUT TEN DOLLARS AND SEVENTY-FIVE CENTS PER RESIDENT...PER DAY. BUT HOW, WHERE, OR WHEN WILL WE SEE THE RESULTS? MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING HAS THE STORY.

(Take Budget pkg)
(on cam tag)
C: ONE EARLY BENEFIT WILL BE NOTICED BY HOMEOWNERS WHO CAN EXPECT A TWENTY PER CENT DROP IN THEIR PROPERTY TAX RATE. THE NEW BUDGET TAKES EFFECT JULY FIRST.

(PiP-R-Superferry))

C. J: JULY FIRST WAS ALSO THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED LAUNCH DATE OF ALAKAI, THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY. WHILE THAT HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK  TO AUGUST FIRST AT THE EARLIEST, WORK TO PREPARE KAHULUI HARBOR IS PROCEEDING AS PLANNED.

(vo) THE SUPERFERRY VEHICLE LOADING BARGE, MANAIAKALANI,  WAS DELIVERED JUST A WEEK AND A HALF AGO TO THE PORT OF KAHULUI, AND SECURED TO A PORTION OF PIER TWO THAT - UP UNTIL NOW - HAS BEEN KIND OF QUIET.

(sf-1) 6:40-6:54   "The area that they're going to use was the least used area in the harbor, and now it's going to be used seven days a week. So yes, in a sense we're getting very busy and the Superferry is adding to the traffic."

(vo) AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF THE CRANE BARGE TO INSTALL RAMPS...THEN ANOTHER BARGE WITH THOSE RAMP PARTS ABOARD, THE HARBOR GOT SO BUSY LAST WEEK THAT THE CRUISE SHIP HAD TO BACK IN TO THE END OF PIER ONE BECAUSE THE SUGAR SHIP HAD TAKEN THE PRIME SPACE. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CRUISE SHIP WAS BACK IN PLACE, BUT SQUEEZED IN BY THE JEAN ANNE AT IT'S STERN. THE END OF PIER TWO IS NOW A PARKING LOT FOR CONTAINERS USED BY YOUNG BROTHERS. IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, FENCES AND BARRIERS WILL SPRING UP SEPARATING CARGO CONTAINERS FROM CITIZENS IN THIS POST-9-11 ERA.

(sf-2) 8:02-8:17  "Passengers will be screened just like the Airport. Cars will be screened. Luggage will be screened before the cars get on the ferry itself - and that's a problem. but we're doing it now the cruise ship and we can do it for the Superferry."

(vo) THE FORMER VALLEY ISLE MOTORS ANNEX LOT WILL BE THE STAGING AND INSPECTION AREA FOR CARS AND TRUCKS PREPARING TO BOARD. THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE TO GET READY. WHEN THINGS ARE ROLLING, INSPECTORS HERE WILL BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR CONTRABAND, AND ALSO FOR PLANTS, ANIMALS OR BUGS THAT MAY BE MORE EASILY SPREAD BETWEEN ISLANDS. PFISTER SAYS THE THREAT OF INVASIVE ALGAE BEING BROUGHT TO MAUI ON THE HULL OF THE SUPERFERRY LIKELY WON'T BE A PROBLEM.

(sf-3) 8:39 -8:55  "You know you look at the harbor today I've got five barges - four barges in here been travelling between the islands for 20 years. You know this is an interisland ferry. It's like a barge that goes much faster."

(vo) A BARGE - IF YOU WILL - THAT HOLDS BETWEEN ONE HUNDRED AND TEN AND A HUNDRED AND FIFTY CARS.

(on-cam) A DEMONSTRATION LAST WEEK BY OPPONENTS OF THE SUPERFERRY ATTEMPTED TO SHOW JUST HOW WELL - OR POORLY - ADJACENT INTERSECTIONS COULD HANDLE THAT MANY CARS. SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS DISMISSED THE PROTEST AS UNREALISTIC SINCE THOSE CARS WOULD HAVE LIKELY BEEN OFF THE STREETS AND IN THE VEHICLE STAGING AREAS UNDER ACTUAL CONDITIONS.

FOR PROGRESS ON THE EVENTUAL ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF THE ALAKAI, FOLLOW THE LINKS TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY FROM OUR WEB SITE AT MAUITVNEWS- DOT-COM.

D. C: TIRED OF DRIVING ALL THE WAY TO KAHULUI TO GO TO THE MALL? WELL, IF YOU CAN WAIT A LITTLE LONGER, THERE MAY BE A MAJOR MALL SPRINGING UP NEAR YOU. DEVELOPERS, RESPONDING TO THE BOOMING RETAIL MARKET IN HAWAII, HAVE COME UP WITH PLANS FOR AS MANY AS SIX NEW MAJOR SHOPPING COMPLEXES ON MAUI OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS - (vo) INCLUDING ONE ON THE MAUKA SIDE OF PI'ILANI HIGHWAY AT KA ONO ULU. THIS SITE WOULD BE THE HOME TO A NEW TARGET, A LOWE'S HOME IMPROVEMENT CENTER, A WHOLE FOODS SUPERMARKET AND ENOUGH RETAILERS TO ACTUALLY BE BIGGER THAN MAUI'S LARGETS SHOPPING COMPLEX, THE QUEEN KA'AHUMANU CENTER.

(FF-CG-con't vo) IN ALL, THE SIX LARGE DEVELOPMENTS WOULD ADD ONE-POINT-SIX MILLION SQUARE FEET OF RETAIL SPACE ON MAUI...AN INCREASE OF NEARLY SIXTY PERCENT OVER WHAT THERE IS NOW. MOST OF THE PLANNED SHOPPING EXPANSION CENTERS IN CENTRAL MAUI, WITH ONE MAJOR COMPLEX PLANNED FOR THE WEST SIDE AND ONE IN SOUTH MAUI.

(ON-CAM) INDUSTRY OBSERVERS SAY SOME OF THE PROJECTS LIKELY WILL NOT PAN OUT BECAUSE WHAT THEY TERM COMPETITIVE OR COMMUNITY ISSUES.

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

E. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES IN HAWAII ARE THE FOCUS OF HUMANS TRYING TO SAVE THEM FROM EXTINCTION, AND SOME DRASTIC IDEAS ARE COMING OUT.

C: AND RIGHT HERE ON MAUI, BEAUTIFUL SHOREBIRDS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK THANKS TO THE CREATIVE THINKING AND RESOURCEFUL EFFORTS OF ONE SOUTH MAUI MAN.

J: AND IF SOMETHING SPECIAL AND UNUSUAL HAPPENED TO YOU LAST THURSDAY NIGHT, WE THINK WE MAY BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHY. THAT STORY AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(b block)

F. C: IT'S BEEN TWO MONTHS SINCE THE STATE LAW BANNING THE USE OF GILL NETS WENT INTO EFFECT ACROSS MOST OF HAWAII.  UNFORTUNATELY, SOME FISHERMEN APPARENTLY FEEL THE LAW DOESN'T APPLY TO THEM.

(vo) THE RESULT? ON OAHU'S MAKUA BEACH MAY TWENTY-SEVENTH, AN ADULT MALE MONK SEAL BECAME ENTANGLED IN AN ILLEGAL GILL NET AND DROWNED. THE ADULT MALE WAS TRAPPED JUST A FEW YARDS FROM SHORE IN WATER ABOUT FIFTEEN FEET DEEP. THE OTHER SEAL IN THIS PHOTO FOLLOWED THE FLOATING CARCASS TO SHORE AND APPEARED TO DEFEND IT FROM STATE OFFICIALS THAT APPROACHED TO DISENTANGLE THE BODY.

(ON-CAM) THERE ARE ONLY ABOUT EIGHTY MONK SEALS KNOWN TO INHABIT THE WATERS OF THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS - AND THIS IS THE SECOND SUCH INCIDENT OF A MONK SEAL DROWNING IN AN ILLEGAL GILL NET SINCE OCTOBER. BOTH INCIDENTS OCCURRED IN THE NEAR SHORE WATERS OF OAHU.

G. J: THE STORY IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN THE NORTHWEST HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, WHERE AN ESTIMATED TWELVE HUNDRED MONK SEALS LIVE. THERE, THE THREAT ISN'T MAN, BUT A CERTAIN BREED OF SHARK. OFFICIALS WITH THE NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION SAY THAT THE GALAPAGOS SHARK IS AN AGGRESSIVE HUNTER OF MONK SEAL PUPS AND THAT THE SHARKS HAVE ATTACKED AND KILLED AS MANY AS 140 PUPS OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS. THEIR ANSWER? THIN THE SHARK POPULATION. NOAA IS SEEKING PERMISSION TO KILL UP TO TEN GALAPAGOS SHARKS INSIDE THE PAPAHANAUMOKUAKEA MARINE NATIONAL MONUMENT THIS SUMMER. THEIR RATIONALE? THE MONK SEALS ARE SERIOUSLY ENDANGERED. THE SHARKS ARE NOT.

H. C: WEDGETAIL SHEARWATERS ARE NOT ENDANGERED, OR EVEN THREATENED. BUT THEY USED TO BE QUITE SCARCE ALONG THE SOUTH MAUI SHORELINE. NOW THE EFFORTS OF SOME KIHEI CONSERVATIONISTS - AND THE RESOURCEFUL THINKING OF ONE MAN IN PARTICULAR - ARE GIVING THE SEABIRDS AND THEIR HUMAN NEIGHBORS A SAFER PLACE TO CALL HOME. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING HAS THE STORY.

(Take Birdwalk Package)

I. J: IF LAST THURSDAY, MAY THIRTY-FIRST WAS A SPECIAL DAY FOR YOU - GOOD OR BAD - YOU CAN BLAME IT ON THE MOON...THE BLUE MOON.

(vo) ONCE IN A BLUE MOON IS A COMMON WAY OF SAYING "NOT VERY OFTEN," BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS A BLUE MOON? A BLUE MOON IS A SECOND FULL MOON TO OCCUR IN A ONE-MONTH PERIOD. THE AVERAGE INTERVAL BETWEEN FULL MOONS IS TWENTY-NINE-POINT FIVE DAYS. THE AVERAGE MONTH IS ROUGHLY THIRTY-POINT-FIVE DAYS, MEANING THERE AREN'T VERY MANY MONTHS WHEN THE PHENOMENON OCCURS, LIKE IT DID HERE LAST WEEK AFTER MAY'S FIRST FULL MOON ON MAY SECOND.

(on-cam) ON AVERAGE, THERE ARE FORTY-ONE MONTHS IN EVERY CENTURY THAT HAVE TWO FULL MOONS, SO - YOU COULD SAY "ONCE IN A BLUE MOON" WORKS OUT TO MEAN "ABOUT ONCE IN EVERY TWO AND A HALF YEARS."

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

J. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...THEY'VE BEEN ASKING THE SAME QUESTION FOR THE PAST TWENTY-TWO YEARS...CAN HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB REALLY WIN IT ALL AGAIN? KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

C: AND JULIE Y JOINS US AFTER THAT WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT THE RUMORS. WE'LL GIVE YOU A LITTLE HINT: THE ANSWER IS YES.

J: THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(break)
(C-Block)

K. K: (on-cam) THE TERM " DYNASTY" COMES TO MIND. ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS! ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. WE'VE OFTEN SEEN CHAMPIONS REPEAT, EVEN THREE-PEAT. BUT, EVEN AFTER DOMINATING THEIR SPORT FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB SHOWED LITTLE SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN AS THE TWO-THOUSAND AND SEVEN MAUI COUNTY HAWAIIAN CANOE ASSOCIATION REGATTA SEASON OPENED THIS PAST SATURDAY IN KAHULUI.

(vo) THE WEATHER COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE PERFECT FOR THE "JOHN WILMINGTON THE THIRD" REGATTA AT KAHULUI HARBOR. AS THE FLAGS OF HAWAII - AND HAWAIIAN  - PLIED THE SKIES, HAWAIIANS CREWS PLIED THE SEAS, DOMINATING EARLY AND OFTEN. THEIR TEAMS SEEMED TO SERVE EARLY NOTICE TO COMPETITORS THAT THEY PLAN TO PICK UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF - AS NOT ONLY MAUI COUNTY CHAMPS, BUT ALSO WHY THEY'VE BEEN WINNERS OF THE STATE RACING CROWN FOR THE LAST SIX YEARS STRAIGHT.

(sot) Kawika Williams, Head Coach - Kihei Canoe Club.

YOUNG PADDLERS ARE ALSO OF THE FOCUS OF THE RE-INVIGORATED LAHAINA CANOE CLUB - SPORTING A NEW LOGO, A NEW TENT, AND A NEW ROSTER - GROWING FROM JUST NINE MEMBERS LAST YEAR TO MORE THAN SIXTY THIS YEAR. HOW DID THEY DO THAT?

(SOT) Adam Quinn, President, Lahaina Canoe Club.

THEY EVEN MOVED THEIR PRACTICE CANOES TO KAMEHAMEHA IKI PARK FOR CLOSER ACCESS BY STUDENTS AT KAMEHAMEHA THE THIRD SCHOOL. MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RACES, PICTURE-PERFECT CONDITIONS MADE FOR PICTURE PERFECT TURNS AND ACCELERATION - TWO OF THE TRADEMARKS OF THE HAWAIIAN TEAMS OVER THE YEARS. THEIR HEAD COACH EXPLAINS WHAT SETS THEM APART.

(SOT) Diane Ho - Head Coach, Hawaiian Canoe Club - for 15 years.

SOME OF THEIR MEMBERS HAVE BEEN WITH THEM THE WHOLE TIME - LIKE IOKEPA NAEOLE - WHO JOINED HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB WHEN HE WAS TWELVE AND HAS BEEN WITH THEM NEARLY THIRTY YEARS. FOR KIHEI CANOE CLUB, ALSO A POWER AT STATE IN DOUBLE-AA STANDINGS, THEIR STRENGTH HAS LONG BEEN IN THEIR MASTER DIVISIONS. AND THIS YEAR THEY GET TO SHOWCASE EVEN MORE OF THEM.

(sot) Kawika Williams

(FF-CG Con't vo) HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF THE SEASON'S FIRST CANOE REGATTA. IN A FINISH THAT SURPRISED ALMOST NO ONE, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB TOOK FIRST PLACE WITH ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-EIGHT POINTS. THE SURPRISE CAME IN THE RACE FOR SECOND. KAHANA HELD A STRONG LEAD THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAY. BUT A COMBINATION OF DISQUALIFICATIONS AND LATE WINS FOR KIHEI CANOE CLUB RESULTED IN A TIE FOR SECOND AT EIGHTY-NINE POINTS APIECE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE CREWS ON A GREAT FIRST DAY OF RACING.

(FF-CG Con't VO) THERE ARE SIX REGATTAS ON THIS YEAR'S SCHEDULE, LEADING UP TO THE M-C-H-C-A CHAMPIONSHIPS ON JULY TWENTY-FIRST. THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE SET FOR AUGUST FOURTH AT HANALEI BAY ON KAUAI.

(on cam) A LITTLE LATER, WE'LL SHOW YOU SOME CANOES OF ANOTHER STYLE - WHEN SAILING CANOES CAME TO KA'ANAPALI LAST WEEK. BUT FOR NOW, THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. REMEMBER, IF YOUR TEAM HAS A SPORTING EVENT OR SEASON COMING UP, BE SURE TO DROP US A LINE AT SPORTS-AT-MAUITVNEWS.COM. LET US KNOW ABOUT YOUR GAME AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND WE'LL SEE IF WE CAN'T GET A FILM CREW OUT TO COVER YOUR EVENT. I'LL SEE YOU NEXT WEEK. NOW HERE'S JULIE Y WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS.
