J: THE FIRE FLARED FROM FIVE ACRES TO MORE THAN 2,000 ACRES ALMOST OVERNIGHT BUT TIRELESS CREWS KEPT LIVES AND PROPERTY SAFE. AND LATELY, HAVE YOU FELT IT? NOW THE EXPERTS ARE DECLARING IT TOO - THE ECONOMY IS GETTING BETTER. AND, IF THE SHOW FITS, WELL, WE'LL TELL YOU WHAT TO DO ABOUT.

(ON-CAM) THAT'S THE SECOND IN OUR SERIES OF "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! REPORTS. THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF OUR TOP STORIES - PLUS WE BID FAREWELL TO APOLLO AND TALK TO A VERY EXCITED MAUI DERMATOLOGIST ABOUT WHAT HE CALLS A MIRACLE DRUG. IN SPORTS NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI COMES HOME AND PLANTS THEIR FLAG. ALL THIS PLUS CURTAIN CALL AND COMING ATTRACTIONS THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS - MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST ON AN EXTREMELY BUSY WEEK . I'M JEFF KING. A SMALL FIRE FIRST REPORTED SUNDAY NIGHT WAS CONTAINED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. BUT ON MONDAY NIGHT, FIREFIGHTERS WEREN'T SO LUCKY.

(TURN TO CAM) A CITIZEN REPORTED THE FIRE TO MAUI FIRE OFFICIALS AROUND 10 P.M. - BUT SAID IT HAD BEEN BURNING SINCE AROUND 7 P.M. THAT HEAD START WAS ALMOST TOO MUCH FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO OVERCOME.

(TAKE FIRE PKG). FIRST LIGHT TUESDAY MORNING SHOWED JUST HOW MUCH OF THE KAHALAWAI SLOPES ABOVE MA'ALAEA WERE ENGULFED - AND HOW MUCH MORE WAS AT RISK.

THE FIRE BROKE OUT IS A PLACE LOCALS CALL UTILITY ROAD - BY THE TRAIL THAT SPANS THE PALI. AS SOON AS THERE WAS ENOUGH LIGHT THE HELICOPTERS WERE AT IT - WITH AIR ONE AND AIR TWO JOINED BY FIVE OTHER HELICOPTERS - INCLUDING TWO NATIONAL GUARD BLACKHAWK CHOPPERS FROM THE BIG ISLAND.

BY TUESDAY EVENING THE FLAMES WERE VISIBLE AS FAR EAST AS WAIKAPU AND, AS NIGHT FELL, AND THE COPPERS WERE GROUNDED, THE FLAMES MOVED HIGHER ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE - INTO THE RUGGED TERRAIN NEARLY INACCESSIBLE BY FOOT OR VEHICLE. A CREW OF 26 FIREFIGHTERS STAYED ON SCENE ALL NIGHT TUESDAY TO KNOCK DOWN HOT SPOTS WHILE WIN CONTINUED TO WHIP THE FLAMES.

BY WEDNESDAY THERE WERE FEW SIGNS OF THE BLAZE READILY VISIBLE. EVEN THOUGH THE FIRE WAS TECHNICALLY STILL NOT 100 PERCENT CONTAINED, RELATIVE FEW PLACES WERE STILL BURNING. THE PROBLEM WAS GETTING TO THEM.

IN ALL CLOSE TO 6,000 ACRES WERE CHARRED - AND ONLY ONE INJURY WAS REPORTED - A FIREFIGHTER WHO WAS TREADTED FOR SMOKE INHALATION TUESADAY AND RELEASED. ABOUT 100 MA'ALAEA RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS WERE TEMPORARILY EVACUATED - BUT FIREFIGHTERS DID THEIR USUAL EXCELLENT JOB OF SAVING LIVES AND PROPERTY. THERE WERE SPOTTY POWER OUTAGES AND THE HONOAPI'ILANI HIGHWAY WAS CLOSED FOR SIX HOURS ALONG THE PALI, BUT A DEDICATED CREW OF TRAINED PROFESSIONALS KEPT A BIG FIRE FROM BECOMING A DISASTROUS FIRE.

(ON-CAM TAG) THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED EXTRA HELP FROM THE NATIONAL GUARD, GOODFELLOW BROTHERS AND THE DLNR'S DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE.

(MAY RAIN)(PiP-RAINDROP)

J: AND IT HASN’T HELPED THAT MAY AND - SO FAR - JUNE HAVE BEEN SO FAR BELOW AVERAGE - RAIN WISE - IN MAUI COUNTY. WHILE NEARLY ALL THE COUNTY'S RAIN GAGES WERE WELL BELOW 50 PERCENT IN MAY - SOME WERE BELOW 10 PERCENT OF NORMAL.

(FF-CH-VO) PU'U KUKUI, JUST A FEW MILES FROM THE MA'ALAEA FIRE, HAD BEEN THE WETTEST SPOT IN THE STATE SO FAR THIS YEAR. NOT ANY MORE. WITH JUST 9-POINT 84 INCHES OF RAIN IN MAY - BY FAR THE MOST IN MAUI COUNTY - THAT WAS ONLY 28 PERCENT OF NORMAL. FOR THE YEAR, JUST LESS THAN 100 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE FALLEN AT THE PEAK OF KAHALAWAI IN WEST MAUI. AS OF MAY, KAUAI'S MOUNT WAIALEALE IS - ONCE AGAIN - THE WETTEST SPOT IN THE STATE WITH 104 INCHES OF RAIN.

MEANWHILE, BACK ON DRY LAND, PUKALANI AND LAHAINA AREA GAGES RECORDED JUST THREE PERCENT OF NORMAL RAINFALL AS OUR DROUGHT CONDITIONS - RATED AT EXTREME FOR MUCH OF THE COUNTY - CONTINUE.

(ON-CAM) THE BIG ISLAND CONTINUES TO SUFFER MOST - WITH THEIR DROUGHT RATING AT EXCEPTIONAL AS RECORD LOW RAINFALL IS HAPPENING, OR NOT HAPPENING THERE. ONLY O'AHU IS NOT CONSIDERED TO HAVE A DROUGHT SITUATION RIGHT NOW.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, WHAT TO DO IF THE SHOE DOESN'T FIT. WE'LL TAKE TO YOU A PLACE IN WAILUKU THAT HAS A PASSION FOR OUR SOLES IN OUR NEXT "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! REPORT. AND, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WE CAUGHT UP WITH APOLO OHNO THIS WEEK - WHICH WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IF HE WERE ON SKATES. THOSE STORIES AND MUCH MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL-IF THE SHOE FITS)(PiP-GCTL LOGO)

J: ANCHOR INTRO: WHILE VISITOR STATISTICS MAY BE ON THE UPSWING, THE TRICKLE-DOWN EFFECT STILL HASN'T REACHED THE BOTTOM LINE FOR ALL OF US. THAT'S WHY IT'S STILL AS IMPORTANT AS EVER TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER. ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE IDEAS TO HELP MOVE THINGS FORWARD ORIGINATED IN MAUI COUNTY. A PROGRAM CALLED "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!" IS ONE THE ENTIRE STATE COULD LEARN FROM.

THE IDEA IS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES BECAUSE THEY SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY. HERE'S ANOTHER IN OUR SERIES ON "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!" FEATURING A LADY WHOSE PASSION IS OUR SOLES.

(TAKE GCTL-SHOE FITS PKG) BAREFOOT IN PARADISE. IT'S A NICE IDEA - BUT THE REALITY IS THAT'S NOT PRACTICAL. PEOPLE NEED SHOES - FROM SLIPPAHS...TO BOOTS, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. TERI EDMONDS, OWNER OF IF THE SHOE FITS AND TESTER'S SHOE REPAIR ON MARKET STREET IN WAILUKU, SAW A NEED IN THE MARKETPLACE.

Teri Edmonds, Owner, If The Shoe Fits

TE01: "I'm doing this because there is a great demand for it. Shoe repair came along by accident - but shoe designing was kind of forced on me. I had all these local women coming into the store, looking for large sizes because they heard that I had large sizes and they just kept on coming. Sizes all the way up to size 16. I have customers that are age 15 that wear a size 16. I remember one customer that just stoof there and cried, saying I need shoes that are cute that don't look like boys' shoes, so that was the beginning of my journey."

HER HOT BISKITS BRAND GREW FROM THAT - FILLING THE LOCAL NEED FOR SHOES THAT ARE A LITTLE WIDER AND A LITTLE BIGGER THAN MOST WOMEN CAN FIND AT BIG BOX STORES - YET STILL CUTE AND MOST OF ALL, AFFORDABLE.

TESTER'S SHOE REPAIR HAD BEEN IN WAILUKU FOR 30 YEARS AND TERRY TESTER TAUGHT TERI EDMONDS EVERYTHING SHE NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT SHOE REPAIR, SO SHE BECAME - AS SHE CALLS IT - A COBBLERETTE. BUT BEFORE SHE GOT INTO THE BUSINESS OF - PARDON THE PUN - SAVING SOLES...

TE02: "Before I was a cobbler I was a retail shoe owner, and before that, I'm an accountant by trade."

A JACQUELINE OF MANY TRADES AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, TERI DIVULGED HER DREAM.

TE03: "My dream is to have a factory on Maui that is completely self-contained - that uses local resources, keeps rubbish out of the landfill - for instance, plastic bags make great padding between soles."

BUT HER GOALS ARE EVEN HIGHER THAN JUST HEELS.

TE04: "In the course of having that self-sustaining shoe factory on Maui, I would love to help women. I think that - me being in an indistry that is predominantly male is an example of what women can do - given the opportunity. I would love to help the. So I'm working to incorporate green products with helping women. And that is my vision - and being on Maui forever."

EVEN THOUGH HER HOT BISKITS DESIGNS ARE CUSTOM AND MADE BY HAND, TERI'S CUSTOMER IS THE WORKING WOMAN - ON HER FEET A LOT - AND ON A BUDGET. HER PRICES TYPICALLY RANGE FROM 30 TO 60 DOLLARS. THAT'S FOR NEW SHOES. THEN THERE'S THE OTHER HALF OF HER BUSINESS - SHOE REPAIR. HERS IS THE ONLY BUSINESS ON MAUI THAT OFFERS THIS SERVICE.

TE05: "I've heard a lot of articles over these last couple of years in this economic downturn that the shoe repair business is up. I don't find that to be the case. I find that people who know good leather shoes have known them for years - they've always gotten them repaired and they last - which is exactly another reason why I'm getting away from petroleum products and using leather. Leather stands the test of time. It's better for your feet and the shoes can always be repaired."

AND HER SHOE REPAIR WORK IS PRIMARILY GEARED TOWARD MEN AND THEIR BELOVED BOOTS AND SHOES. TERI SAYS MEN DON'T BUY SHOES AS OFTEN AS WOMEN - BUT THEY KEEP THEM A LOT LONGER. BUT EVEN IN HER COBBLER'S WORKSHOP, TERY IS VERY PROUD OF CALLING HERSLEF A GIRLY GIRL. AND, AS A LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER AND A WOMAN IN BUSINESS, TERI HAS GREAT PRAISE FOR THE GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL PROGRAM.

TE06:"Got Choice? Think Local! is very important to me. I wish it would go across the country. I think it's great to support each other's little communities. We don't realize whan an impact our dollar has, and the choice: that is our power - how we spend our money. I find that small businesses like myself - we do put back into the community. We support non-profits//// We step up to the plate. So when someone comes and buys a shoe from me, a portion of my proceeds goes to support community events."//

AND IF THE SHOE FITS, AND YOU GO TO MAUI COUNTY THINK LOCAL.COM AND PRINT A COUPON...

TE07: "My discount is 10 percent off everything - shoe repair, shoe purchases, whatever it is. I think was incredibly innovative for the County of Maui to step forward with this program// and I'm really glad to see companies like KHON recognizing the importance in that and taking it across the state."///

AND TERI IS STEPPING FORWARD - IN BEAUTIFUL SHOES, OF COURSE - WITH HER LOCAL PARTNERS TO KEEP IT LOCAL.

TE08: "Maui Invasive Species is one of our partners. They get funding to pull the wood - the invasive wood out - guava - things like that and they can all be used. So instead of going into the rubbish they can now be recycled into shoe products. I can make heels. I can make wedges. And we're using recycled tires. That's one of our other ones. I'm just going to make them cute - cute recycled tires. (laugh)//

SO, IF THE SHOE FITS...WEAR IT...AND IF IT DOESN'T, BRING IT TO TERI, AND SHE'LL MAKE IT FIT, OR MAKE YOU NEW ONES. IT ALL HAPPENS IN THE HEART OF WAILUKU - IN THE HEART OF MAUI, THE HEART OF GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!

(ON-CAM TAG): TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MORE THAN 200 BUSINESSES THAT BELONG TO MAUI COUNTY'S "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!" CAMPAIGN, GO TO MAUI-COUNTY - THINK-LOCAL -DOT-COM. BROWSE THE SPECIAL OFFERS AVAILABLE AND YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND PRINT VALUABLE COUPONS. AND IF YOU'D LIKE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE 'OHANA, YOU CAN FIND OUT HOW TO DO THAT ON THE WEBSITE, TOO. AND WHO KNOWS? MAYBE SOON YOUR BUSINESS WILL BE FEATURED IN A "GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!" SPECIAL REPORT.

(APOLO MAUI)(PiP-APOLO)

J: THEY FOLLOWED APOLO TO HAWAI'I LAST WEEK AFTER WINNING A CONTEST. AS THE OLYMPIC CHAMPION AND THE ALASKA AIRLINES CONTEST WINNERS LEARNED, YOU CAN'T SEE ALL OF MAUI IN JUST FIVE DAYS. BUT, SOMEHOW, THEY STILL MANAGED TO HAVE FUN.

(TAKE APOLO PKG) KAHULUI AIRPORT WAS BUSY MONDAY MORNING AS TRAVELERS WITH TOO MUCH STUFF, OR TOO FEW HANDS, CROWDED THE ALASKA AIRLINES COUNTER. ALSO HEADING OUT FROM KAHULUI MONDAY, THE MOST DECORATED WINTER OLYMPIAN IN U.S. HISTORY. APOLO ANTON OHNO SAID BEING THOUSANDS OF MILES FROM THE NEAREST ICE RINK DIDN'T BOTHER HIM A BIT.

Apolo Ohno, Olymp[ic Champion/Vacationer

AO01: "No. This is the greatest place on Earth in my opinion. It's the furthest thing from ice - I get shave ice here. But it's - I've been to Hawai'i before, and Maui is a fantastic place and I always feel good about coming here. You hear people say 'I have roots - Hawaiian roots here' or 'I was supposed to be here in a previous life.' I truly feel that way."///

WITH APOLO AND HIS DAD WERE FOUR WINNERS OF THE ALASKA AIRLINES "FOLLOW APOLO TO HAWAII" SWEEPSTAKES - AND THAT INCLUDED THIS COUPLE - WHO EACH WON A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA THE DAY BEFORE THE TRIP.

Kevin LaChapelle, Whitney Chen, Contest winners

KL-WC01: "Yes, I asked Whitney to marry me the day before we came on the trip and she said yes (kiss). I did. Thank you.

SURE, PRETTY MUSHY - TAKE TWO. (kiss)

WITH THE GROUP - INCLUDING HIS DAD - OHNO ENJOYED A PRIVATE LU'AU, A CATAMARAN SAIL AND JUST DOWN TIME. BUT - AT THE LEVEL OF EVERGY OF THIS 28 YEAR-OLD CHAMPION - DOWN TIME DOESN'T MEAN NAP TIME. HE'S WORKING ON HIS NEXT BURST OF SPEED AND HIS GOAL? HERE'S A HINT: IT DOESN'T INVOLVE SKATES OR ICE.

AO02: "I've just signed to write a book. I worked on that actually the whole time when I was here as well. I just launched my own nutritional company called 8 Zone - just trying to give back to the health and fitness industry in that respect. All the years and research and knowledge that I've had - now trying to produce products people can actually take. Y'know - kick start their life toward a healthier lifestyle. And I've been doing a lot of speaking - speaking to a lot of middle schools - talking to a lot of kids about staying on the right path and doing the right things necessary to make positive decisions in their life and reach out for the dreams that they always want to accomplish."

BUT LIKE A MOTH A FLAME, THE OLYMPIC FLAME STILL PULLS AT HIM.

AO03: "The Olympic pursuit has been so great to me and I'm always going to be involved with the sport whether I decide to come back or not. But right now I'm just enjoying life."

(ON-CAM TAG) WE'RE TOLD SOME 30,000 PEOPLE ENTERED THE CONTEST. THEY ARRIVED LAST WEEK TO A HUGE RECEPTION INCLUDING MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES, LT. GOVERNOR DUKE AIONA AND A HUI CALLED THE MAUI SURF GROMS - A TEAM WORKING TO MAKE SURFING AN OLYMPIC SPORT.

(MARTIN-DRUG)(PiP-PILL BOTTLE)

J: IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS GRAVELY ILL, THE NAME OF THE MEDICATION DOESN'T MATTER. NOW THERE'S A NEW MEDICATION OF PARTICULAR VALUE IN THE MAUI LIFESTYLE THAT HAS AN ODD NAME - BUT SOME ARE CALLING IT A MIRACLE.

(TAKE MARTIN PKG) George Martin, MD, Dermatologist

GM01: "Ipilimumab

WHAT?

GM01b: "Ipilimumab. And I believe that's the correct pronunciation. "

AND IF ANYONE WOULD KNOW, KIHEI DERMATOLOGIST DR. GEORGE MARTIN WOULD NE THE ONE. THE DRUG IS - PUBLICLY - BRAND NEW, BUT HAS BEEN IN TRIALS FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS. OVER THIS PAST WEEKEND, NEWS BURST OUT THAT THE NEW DRUG IS THE FIRST MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN THE TREATMENT FOR THE DEADLIEST FORM OF SKIN CANCER: MELANOMA. HERE'S THE TECHNICAL VERSION.

GM02: "This particular molecule targets an immune cell that, basically, slows down our immune system - what we call 'down-regulates.' So when we target it in the face of melanoma, what we do is we essentially unroof the immune system. We unleash it to then create enough information to start attacking cancer cells. Specifically, melanoma cells."

IPILIMUMAB IS NOT SUNSCREEN, NOR IS IT PREVENTATIVE. IT'S A DRUG THERAPY FOR MELANOMA PATIENTS WHO HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL SURGICAL OPTIONS AND OTHER AVENUES TO EXTEND THEIR LIVES.

GM03: "...to date - until this trial came out - there have been no large scale studies that ever proved an increase in survival - with any drug and now we have one. And it's exciting because the data tell us that they've increased the six-month survival rate dramatically. I mean they've almost doubled it."///

MARTIN - AS ALWAYS, REMINDS THAT MELANOMA IS ALMOST ALWAYS PREVENTABLE. YET IT'S CLAIMING MORE LIVES THAN EVER.

GM04: "Yeah, it used to be - 20 or30 years ago the incidence was one in 100 individuals would develop melanoma over the course of their lifetime. And those are caucasian individuals. Now the incidence is one in 75, moving toward one in 60 and it really has to do with our sun tanning habits. This year we expect, sadly, almost 7,000 people will die in the United States from melanoma and over 50,000 people worldwide will die of melanoma. So the impact of this drug on increasing the survival of these individuals is huge."

AND HE SAYS THE RED TAPE OF A LONG-TERM APPROVAL PROCESS BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION WILL MOST LIKELY BE FAST-TRACKED - LIKE THEY'VE DONE BEFORE.

GM05: "Yeah, you have to understand that the patients we're talking about have terminal diseases and time is of the essence, so the FDA has a fast track - almost like an orphan drug indication - similar to what they had for HIV. When we found that HIV could be really controlled with the anti-retro-viral therapy that we now have - the heart therapy that we now have, the FDA basically spear headed that through in a hurry."///

MARTIN PUTS IPILIMUMAB IN A CATEGORY OF MIRACLE DRUGS, AND OFFERED THIS ADVICE TO THE DOZENS MELANOMA PATIENTS IN HAWAII WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM IT BUT WHO MAY BE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

GM06: "I would suspect that, right now, there's a Compassionate Use Program for individuals in late-stage melanoma cancer where if they were able to contact the people at Bristol-Meyers-Squibb, there might be a compassionate use of this drug where they could receive four doses of the drug over a one-week time period - and that is what's resulting in these numbers that we're now seeing."///

(FF-CG-VO) NA KOA'S HOME STAND AGAINST TIJUANA CONTINUES THROUGH SUNDAY AT MAEHARA STADIUM. THE SAINT GEORGE ROADRUNNERS COME TO MAUI FOR A SCHEDULED SIX-DAY STAND STARTING TUESDAY.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK ON OUR NEWEST NEW FEATURE ON MAUI TV NEWS - CURTAIN CALL. NOTED LOCAL ACTOR, WRITER AND THEATER CRITIC PAUL JANES-BROWN JOINS MAUI TV NEWS FOR THE ANOTHER EDITION OF "CURTAIN CALL."

THE MAUI FILM FESTIVAL WILL BE HOSTING THE WORLD PREMIERE OF "442, LIVE WITH HONOR, DIE WITH DIGNITY" AT THE MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER’S CASTLE THEATER ON FATHER’S DAY, SUNDAY, JUNE 20 AT 1:30 P.M. PAUL JANES-BROWN HAS A REVIEW FOR CURTAIN CALL.

PJB: 442, LIVE WITH HONOR, DIE WITH DIGNITY IS A SHOO-IN FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY AND SHOULD CERTAINLY BE AN AUDIENCE FAVORITE. WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY JUNICHI SUZUKI WITH NARRATION BY LANE NISHIKAWA, THE DOCUMENTARY FOLLOWS THE HEROIC EXPLOITS OF ONE OF THE U.S. MILITARY’S MOST DECORATED UNITS, THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM (RCT) AND THE HALLOWED 100TH BATTALION. THESE WERE THE ALL-JAPANESE AMERICAN AND JAPANESE HAWAIIAN UNITS THAT FOUGHT AND DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN ITALY, FRANCE AND GERMANY DURING WWII. MORE THAN 4,000 JAPANESE HAWAIIAN’S SERVED, DIED OR WERE INJURED, MANY FROM MAUI.

THE FILM SHOWCASES VINTAGE FOOTAGE AS WELL AS CONTEMPORARY INTERVIEWS WITH A DOZEN LIVING MEMBERS OF THE 442. IT SHOWS NOT ONLY THE BATTLES, BUT IT ALSO DELVES INTO THE INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE AMERICANS AS WELL AS HORRIFIC IMAGES OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS. THE FILMMAKERS HAVE DONE A MASTERFUL JOB OF INTERWEAVING THE VINTAGE FOOTAGE WITH CONTEMPORARY SHOTS TO PRESENT NOT ONLY AN HISTORIC DOCUMENT, BUT ALSO TOUCHING PORTRAITS OF THESE HEROES.

THEIR HUMILITY, COUPLED WITH EXTRAORDINARY COURAGE IS LITERALLY BREATHTAKING. WHAT DROVE THEM TO “GO FOR BROKE” AS THEIR MOTTO DEMANDED? THE FILMMAKERS WENT TO THE SCENES OF THEIR GREATEST TRIUMPHS—MONTE CASSINO, ANZIO, BRUYERES, FRANCE AND LIBERATING ONE OF THE SUB CAMPS OF THE DACHAU DEATH CAMP IN GERMANY. IT DOCUMENTS THEIR COURAGE AND SHOWS WHY THEY HAD A 93% CASUALTY RATE WHICH LED TO MORE THAN 18,000 MEDALS INCLUDING 7 PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATIONS, 21 CONGRESSIONAL MEDALS OF HONOR, MORE THAN 9,000 PURPLE HEARTS, 52 DISTINGUISHED SERVICES CROSSES AND 560 SILVER STARS.

THE FILM SHOWS US THEY WERE DRIVEN BY A DESIRE TO PROVE THEY WERE LOYAL AMERICANS, NOT ENEMY ALIENS AS THEY HAD BEEN CHARACTERIZED.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST MOVING DOCUMENTARIES I HAVE EVER SEEN. FEW PEOPLE KNOW MOST OF THESE STORIES BECAUSE OF THE HUMILITY OF THE SURVIVING 442 MEMBERS. FOR EXAMPLE, IT WAS THE 442 WHO CLEARED THE ROAD TO ROME, BUT THEY STOOD ASIDE AS CAUCASIAN TROOPS WENT INTO ROME, WHILE THEY WERE ORDERED TO BYPASS THE “ETERNAL CITY.” DESPITE THEIR BRAVERY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THEY WERE SUBJECTED TO DISCRIMINATION.

IN AN HISTORIC MOMENT, WHEN 442 BECAME THE ONLY UNIT IN U.S. HISTORY TO BE GREETED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S., PRES. TRUMAN SUMMED IT UP BEST, “YOU FOUGHT NOT ONLY THE ENEMY, BUT YOU’VE FOUGHT PREJUDICE AND YOU’VE WON.”

THIS IS A GREAT FILM, ALL OF MAUI SHOULD COME OUT ON FATHER’S DAY TO CELEBRATE THE COURAGE OF THE 442. DON’T MISS THIS.

I’M PAUL JANES-BROWN AND THAT’S CURTAIN CALL FOR THIS WEEK, A HUI HOU. STAY TUNED FOR COMING ATTRACTIONS - UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, RIGHT AFTER THIS.
