B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

C. J: THE TRAGIC DEATH OF AN EIGHT YEAR-OLD BOY FOLLOWING A COLLISION ON HONOAPIILANI HIGHWAY JUNE THIRD REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

(SOT-1)(Lt. Bobby Hill, commander, Traffic Division, MPD)(:52)

(on-cam) LIEUTENANT HILL GAVE MAUI TV NEWS THE LATEST ON THEIR INVESTIGATION.

(sot-2) (:25)

(on-cam) THE DEATH WAS THE TENTH SO FAR ON MAUI COUNTY ROADWAYS THIS YEAR, COMPARED TO SIX AT THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR. THERE WERE SIX TRAFFIC FATALITIES IN THE MONTH OF MAY ALONE.

D. C: ACCIDENTS ALL-TO-FREQUENTLY SHUT DOWN TRAFFIC ON THE HONOAPIILANI HIGHWAY. BUT ONE DAY LAST WEEK, CARS WERE STOPPED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS ON THE PALI ON THE LAHAINA SIDE OF THE TUNNEL TO PREVENT AT LEAST ONE KIND OF FUTURE ROAD DISASTER.

(vo) CREWS INSTALLED RING-NET-MESH SECURITY FENCING ABOVE THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE AT BOTH ENDS. TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED SEVERAL TIMES LAST THURSDAY WHILE A HELICOPTER DELIVERED ROLLS OF THE MESH THAT WAS THEN ANCHORED TO HUGE STANCHIONS EMBEDDED TEN FEET INTO SOLID ROCK. THE FIVE-HUNDRED-THOUSAND DOLLAR PROJECT WAS INSTALLED IN RESPONSE TO LAST OCTOBER’S EARTHQUAKE. GEOLOGISTS AND ENGINEERS DESIGNED A SYSTEM THAT COULD WITHSTAND THE IMPACT OF A SIX-THOUSAND POUND BOULDER COMING DOWN THE HILL AT UP TO SEVENTY MILES PER HOUR. THE RISK OF ROCK SLIDES, BIG AND SMALL, ARE BEING TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY ALL ALONG THE PALI WITH SEVERAL REINFORCEMENT PROJECTS UNDERWAY.

D. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...BASED ON THE ADAGE THAT IT’S TOUGHER TO STAY ON TOP THAN TO GET THERE - THE MAUI VISITORS BUREAU HAS ITS WORK CUT OUT FOR IT...BUT AT LEAST ONE LOCAL - AND VOCAL - CRITIC THINKS THEY COULD DO WHAT THEY DO - FOR A LOT LESS MONEY.

C: SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER ACROSS MAUI COUNTY, BUT STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE ALREADY LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL...AND THE FLU SEASON. WE’LL HAVE DETAILS ON THEIR PLANS FOR A HEALTHIER STUDENT BODY.

J: AND WE’LL FOLLOW UP ON LAST WEEK’S REPORT OF THE MONK SEAL THAT DROWNED AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN AN ILLEGAL GILL NET OFF O’AHU’S MAKUA BEACH. THE OWNER OF THE NET HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AND THE FINES AND SENTENCES ARE MOUNTING.

C: THESE STORIES AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK.

E. C: “THE MARKETING OF MAUI.” WITH MAUI’S CONSISTENT RATINGS AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S PREMIERE VACATION DESTINATIONS, EITHER IT’S AN EASY JOB TO MARKET THE ISLANDS...OR THE FOLKS DOING IT ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING SPOKE WITH THE MVB DIRECTOR ABOUT THE TASKS INVOLVED, AS WELL AS THE COSTS. AND HE SPOKE TO ONE CRITIC WHO SAYS SOMEONE ELSE SHOULD BE FOOTING THE BILL.

(take mvb package)

(on-cam tag) A LITTLE LATER IN THIS NEWSCAST, WE’LL SHOW SOME OF THE SPECTACULAR MARKETING TOOLS THE MVB USES TO ADVERTISE THE MAGIC OF MAUI TO THE WORLD.

F. J: HAWAI'I IS THE FIRST STATE IN THE NATION TO OFFER FREE FLU VACCINATIONS TO ALL ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN AN EFFORT TO SLICE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO COME DOWN WITH THE ILLNESS EACH YEAR.

(sot) Marc Nishimoto, Public Health Emergency Prepardeness Planner, Maui District Office, State Department of Health

Marc01- "We did a pilot program last year to determine how many kids would be willing take the free vaccination shots. We did it at Mililani School. And we decided to expand it statewide to public as well as private schools."

SCHOOLS OPTING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FREE FLU SHOT PROGRAM WOULD HAVE THE VACCINE AVAILABLE AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME.

Marc 02" It starts in October, with the vaccine arriving in early October. Then the schools let us know how many student will be vaccinated and we begin vaccinating."

THE IDEA OF VACCINATING SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN HAS MULTIPLE BENEFITS. NOT ONLY DOES IT REDUCE THE NUMBER OF SCHOOL DAYS MISSED, IT GREATLY REDUCES THE EXPOSURE OF FLU TO FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ARE VERY YOUNG OR VERY OLD WHO ARE AT THE HIGHEST RISK FOR COMPLICATIONS.

FOR THOSE WHO JUST DON'T LIKE FLU SHOTS...OR SHOTS OF ANY KIND, THERE IS AN OPTION.

(SOT) (LIZBETH "gigi" OLSTEN, Public Health Nursing Supervisor for Maui County. )

Gigi-1 "There are two methods. There will be a shot or - if children are eligible - it will be a nasal spray. Parents, on their consent form, will be able to mark on there which one they want their children to get."

WHILE THERE IS NO EARLY WARNING ABOUT THIS YEAR'S FLU SEASON, NOR ANY IDEA OF A PARTICULAR STRAIN HEADED FOR HAWAII, HEALTH OFFICIALS REMIND THAT IT'S BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. NATIONALLY, INFLUENZA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MORE THAN 200,000 HOSPITALIZATIONS ANNUALLY AND ABOUT 30,000 DEATHS. A TOTAL OF 152 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. DIED IN THE 2003-04 FLU SEASON, MANY OF WHOM WERE HEALTHY AND NOT IN A HIGH-RISK GROUP.

G: C: ON LAST WEEK’S EDITION OF MAUI TV NEWS, WE TOLD YOU ABOUT THE DROWNING OF AN ENDANGERED HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL AFTER IT WAS TRAPPED IN AN ILLEGAL GILL NET OFF O’AHU’S MAKUA BEACH.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES HAS CITED A MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY SET THE GILL NET THAT TRAPPED AND DROWNED AN ADULT MALE HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL AT MAKUA BEACH MAY 27.
A WAI'ANAE FISHERMAN, JOHN P. KAHALEKII, WAS CITED FOR DEPLOYING A NET THAT WAS LONGER THAN THE STATE'S 125-FOOT MAXIMUM LENGTH, FOR FAILING TO REGISTER THE NET WITH THE STATE AND FOR FAILING TO VISUALLY INSPECT THE NET AS REQUIRED BY LAW.
THE DLNR, IN A NEWS RELEASE, SAID KAHALEKII WAS IDENTIFIED TO OFFICERS AT THE BEACH ON THE DAY OF THE SEAL'S DEATH. STATE AND FEDERAL CHARGES ARE ALSO POSSIBLE.
THE POSSIBLE MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR THE DLNR CITATIONS IS A FINE UP TO $5,000 AND 30 DAYS IN JAIL, PLUS A $10,000 FINE FOR THE KILLING AN ANIMAL OF AN ENDANGERED SPECIES, THE DLNR SAID.
ANOTHER MONK SEAL DROWNED IN A GILL NET OFF MAKAI PIER AT MAKAPU'U ON O’AHU ON OCT. 16, BUT THE MAY 27 CASE WAS THE FIRST SINCE THE STATE ENACTED STRICT NEW LAY GILL NET REGULATIONS, WHICH LIMIT WHERE AND WHEN THEY CAN BE USED, HOW LONG NETS CAN BE AND THE REQUIREMENT THAT ALL NETS BE REGISTERED WITH THE STATE AND TAGGED WITH IDENTIFYING MARKERS.

H. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB’S DOMINANCE GROWS AS THEY CAPTURE EVEN MORE QUALIFYING SLOTS FOR THIS YEAR’S STATE CANOE CHAMOPIONSHIPS. KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

C: AND JULIE Y JOINS US AFTER THAT WITH THE DETAILS ON THE EIGHTH ANNUAL MAUI FILM FESTIVAL AT WAILEA. IT’S JUST DAYS AWAY!

J: THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

I. IT'S A GAME OF NUMBERS FOR POWERHOUSE HAWAIIAN CANOE CANOE CLUB - AND THE NUMBERS JUST KEEP GETTING BIGGER. ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS! ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

WITH TWENTY-TWO STRAIGHT COUNTY CANOE RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS BEHIND THEM, AND SIX STRAIGHT STATE TITLES AS WELL, HAWAIIAN SHOWED THEIR CONFIDENCE AT THIS WEEKS SECOND REGATTA OF THE SEASON.

(VO) KA LAE POHAKU IN KIHEI PROVIDED ANOTHER PICTURE-PERFECT SETTING, OFFERING WHAT SOME CALL "LAKE MAUI" WATERS TO START THE DAY. YOUNG CREWS FROM HAWAIIAN WASTED NO TIME IN HELPING THEIR CLUB IMPROVE IT'S NUMBERS...QUALIFYING ANOTHER FIVE CREWS FOR STATE FINALS...BRINGING HAWAIIAN'S TOTAL TO THIRTY CREWS IN THE STATE'S TOP PADDLING SLOTS. STRONG FINISHES AND WINS FOR KAHANA AND KIHEI ALSO KEEP THEM IN THE HUNT. ENOUGH TO JUMP FOR JOY? I GUESS SO.

THE MORNING'S CALM CONDITIONS WERE RATHER UNUSUAL FOR KIHEI, BUT WHEN AFTERNOON'S MORE TYPICAL NORTH-SOUTH BLAST TOOK OVER, THE KIHEI CREWS CAME TO LIFE. THE MASTERS MEN WERE HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH HWAIIAN AND LAE ULA O KAI UNTIL A STRONG TURN IN THE ONE-MILE EVENT SHOT THEM INTO AN UNSURMOUNTABLE LEAD. A WELL-DESERVED VICTORY TUNNEL FOR THE KIHEI MASTERS...AND A CHANCE TO WAVE TO MOM. THE WOMEN OF LAE ULA O KAI TOOK FIRST PLACE IN THEIR MASTERS RACE.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS, HAWAIIAN WON MORE THAN HALF OF THE RACES AT THE MOKI KALANIKAU REGATTA, TAKING TWENTY-TWO OF FORTY-ONE EVENTS. THAT'S FIVE MORE WINS THAN THE WEEK BEFORE.

(FF-CG-1) HERE ARE THE FINAL RESULTS OF SATURDAY'S M-C-H-C-A EVENT. HAWAIIAN RACKED UP AN IMPRESSIVE ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-SIX POINTS. KAHANA FINISHED IN A STRONG SECOND POSITION WITH NINETY POINTS AND KIHEI CANOE CLUB TOOK THIRD WITH EIGHTY-TWO POINTS.

(FF-CG-2) FOR THE SEASON SO FAR, HAWAIIAN LEADS WITH TWO HUNDRED, SEVENTY-FOUR POINTS. KAHANA HAS EARNED ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-NINE POINTS, AND KIHEI IS JUST EIGHT POINTS BEHIND THEM. STRONG FINISHES AT THE KALANIKAU REGATTA ALLOWED LAE ULA O KAI AND NAPILI TO DOUBLE THEIR SCORES FROM THE PREVIOUS WEEK. NEXT WEEK THE RACES MOVE TO THE WEST SIDE AT HANAKAO’O BEACH IN LAHAINA.

(on cam) HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR SUNDAY MORNINGS? MAYBE A RELAXING SWIM, A BIKE RIDE OR A JOG...WELL, TAKE ALL OF THOSE TO THE EXTREME AND YOU HAVE WHAT MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED ATHLETES DID LAST SUNDAY DURING THE SEVENTH ANNUAL KING'S TRAIL TRIATHLON IN MAKENA.

(vo) A SPECTAULAR MORNING DREW THE ENTHUSIASTIC PARTICIPANTS TO THE SHORE AT MALUAKA BEACH FOR THE SEVEN A-M START. IN WAVES BY AGE-GROUP AND GENDER, SWIMMERS LAUNCHED ON A FIFTEEN-HUNDRED METER SWIM. AT TIMES IT SEEMED THERE WERE AS MANY COURSE MARSHALLS, OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEERS ON THE COURSE AS THERE WERE PARTICIPANTS. THE FIRST MALE SWIMMERS WERE OUT OF THE WATER WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES, AND THE FIRST LADY HIT THE SAND LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER. QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT CONSIDERING THE FIRST WOMEN'S GROUP DIDN'T LEAVE THE SHORE UNTIL NINE MINUTES AFTER THE FIRST MEN'S GROUP.

A SCAMPER UP THE HILL AT THE MAUI PRINCE RESORT AND ON TO THE BICYCLE LEG OF THE RACE - WHICH SHUT DOWN A PORTION OF PI'ILANI HIGHWAY FOR PART OF THE MORNING SUNDAY. TWO LAPS ON THE HILLY COURSE COVERED NEARLY TWENTY-FIVE MILES BEFORE THE FINAL PORTION OF THE EVENT - A TEN-K RUN FROM MAKENA TO KEONI'OIO AND BACK. HARD TO BELIEVE THESE ATHLETES CAN LOOK SO FRESH AFTER WHAT THEY'VE JUST ACCOMPLISHED - AND WITH SO MUCH STILL AHEAD OF THEM.

YOUR WINNER? IRVING GLICK OF FOONMAN, CALIFORNIA WITH A TIME OF TWO HOURS, NINE MINUTES AND ELEVEN SECONDS. LOCALS FARED JUST FINE, THANK YOU. KIHEI'S ALLISTER KNOX CAME IN SECOND, OVERALL FOR THE MEN. THE TOP WOMEN'S FINISHED WAS BERNADETTE SUPGMEISTER OF SLAPSKUNK, WASHINGTON WITH A VERY IMPRESSIVE OVERALL TIME OF JUST OVER TWO HOURS, THIRTY-NINE MINUTES...AND LOOKING LIKE SHE COULD HAVE DONE ANOTHER SEVEN OR EIGHT MILES!
