(KEIKI SAFETY)

G. J: WITH THE DEATH OF AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO WAS WEARING A SEAT BELT FRESH ON THEIR MINDS, TEAMS OF POLICE OFFICERS, AMBULANCE CREWS AND VOLUNTEERS FROM AS FAR AWAY AS NEW ZEALAND ARE CONDUCTING CHILD SAFETY SEAT INSPECTIONS ACROSS MAUI TO HELP MAKE SURE ANOTHER PARENT DOESN'T NEED TO RELIVE THE NIGHTMARE OF LOSING A CHILD IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

(vo) TRAFFIC WAS BRISK AT MAUI MARKETPLACE LAST SATURDAY FOR FREE INSPECTIONS OF KEIKI RESTRAINT SYSTEMS.

(sot) Curt Morimoto, Operations Manager, American Medical Response Ambulance Service - Child Safety Seat Technician Instructor.

CM: "What we have them do is fill out a form - car, then we check seat - we have an up-to-date recall list and we make sure the child seat is not on the list. Then we get information on the child, size and weight. Then we show them the proper way to secure the child. Ideally what we then like to do is make sure that the caregiver or parent demonstrates that they can do the same so we're sure that, after they leave here they can do it on their own."

AND IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD, IT TAKES A SKILLED TEAM TO BE SURE THAT CHILD IS PROPERLY BUCKLED UP. THIS TEAM INCLUDES CIVILIANS AND OFFICERS.

(sot) Diana Devlin-Dunnicliffe, Public Safety Aide, MPD Traffic Section.

ddd: "They're school resource officers. They took a training. We had to take a three-day course to get certified to do this. And we also have a young lady here from New Zealand who came to take the class as well."

(CON'T VO) THE TEAM PLANS ANOTHER FREE KEIKI SEAT INSPECTION NEXT MONTH ON JULY FOURTEENTH AT THE MAUI MARKETPLACE.

(ON CAM TAG) ONE OF THE INSPECTORS SATURDAY WAS CAPTAIN CHARLES HIRATA OF THE MAUI POLICE DEPARTMENT. LARYNGITIS PREVENTED HIM FROM COMING ON CAMERA WITH US, BUT WE ASKED HIM ABOUT THE JUNE THIRD ACCIDENT WHERE A SMALL EIGHT-YEAR BOY - IN A SEATBELT - DIED. CAPTAIN HIRATA SAID THE BOY LIKELY WOULD HAVE SURVIVED IF HE HAD BEEN PROPERLY RESTRAINED IN THE BACK SEAT. YOU KEIKI IS THIRTY-EIGHT PER CENT SAFER IN THE BACK SEAT OF YOUR CAR.

(fatal folo)

H. C: A FATAL HEAD-ON COLLISION JUNE TENTH ON THE PIILANI HIGHWAY IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. HOWEVER, POLICE ARE BEGINNING TO RELEASE SOME OF THE DETAILS.

(SOT) (Lt Bobby Hill, cmdr, Traffic Section, Maui Police Department)

BH: "We suspect alcohol. And blood has been taken from the driver. And we're also looking into the possibility of reckless driving and maybe drugs. But those are standard procedures. Whenever there is serious injury as the result of a motor vehicle accident, we'' take blood from the drivers."

On-cam: MAUI TV NEWS ASKED LIEUTENANT HILL HOW THE DEPARTMENT IS RESPONDING TO THE OUTCRY BY SOME TO NAME THE SUSPECTED RECKLESS DRIVE IN THE JUNE THIRD ACCIDENT THAT CLAIMED A LITTLE BOY'S LIFE.

BH: "I realize the public wants to know but until somebody's arrested we still consider it an accident under investigation and we don't give out the names."

On-cam: NEXT WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS, WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ON MAUI - INCLUDING A LOOK AT WHY THE STATISTICS HERE ARE SO DIFFERENT THAN THEY ARE ON OAHU.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

(FF-CG-VO) HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF THE THIRD RACE OF THE SEASON. HAWAIIAN FINISHED WITH ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SIX POINTS. KAHANA RACKED UP NINETY TWO POINTS FOR SECOND PLACE, AND THAT STRONG SHOWING FROM KIHEI EARNED THEM EIGHT-SIX POINTS FOR THE DAY. HERE ARE THE SEASON STANDINGS SO FAR. HAWAIIAN CONSISTENTLY EARNS ABOUT THIRTY PER CENT OF ALL THE POINTS IN EACH REGATTA AND HAS ALREADY REACHED THE FOUR-HUNDRED MARK FOR THE YOUNG SEASON.
