A. J: MAUI IS ONE OF THE SAFEST PLACES IN HAWAII TO CROSS THE STREET. BUT OFFICIALS WARN: “DON'T PUSH YOUR LUCK!”

C: UNLESS IT RAINS SOON, AT LEAST ONE UPCOUNTRY RESERVOIR COULD RUN COMPLETELY DRY. THEN WHAT HAPPENS?

J: AND THEN THERE WERE THREE. THE SHORT LIST FOR THE LOCATION OF MAUI'S LONG-AWAITED KIHEI HIGH SCHOOL GOT EVEN SHORTER THIS WEEK. WE'LL SHOW YOU THE TOP THREE CHOICES.

C: IN SPORTS, THE YOUNG LADIES OF MAUI WERE NO KA OI IN SOCCER, WHILE ACROSS THE HARBOR, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB STRENGTHENED IT'S POSITION HEADING TOWARD STATE FINALS IN PADDLING.

J: AND, JULIE Y JOINS US WITH WHAT'S HOT, TASTY, FUN, PATRIOTIC AND COMING SOON TO THE VALLEY ISLE. THIS AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

C: AND I'M CYNDI MAYO DAVIS. IT'S A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO FATHOM - WITH A HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND RESIDENTS AND MILLIONS OF VISITORS TO OUR ISLANDS - THAT THERE HAS BEEN ONLY ONE PEDESTRIAN FATALITY THIS YEAR.

(turn to cam)(PiP: Pedestrian Safety)

C: IS IT LIFESTYLE...OR JUST GOOD LUCK. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING TAKES A LOOK AT STAYING SAFE - ON FOOT - IN TRAFFIC - ON MAUI.

(Take PedSafety Pkg)

(on cam tag)

C: MAUI ALSO LEADS OAHU IN THE UPGRADING OF MANY INTERSECTIONS WITH THOSE NEW COUNTDOWN PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC SIGNALS. IF THERE IS A STRETCH OF ROAD OR INTERSECTION YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT IS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS TO PEDESTRIANS, CONTACT THE COUNTY OF MAUI BEFORE AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS. FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(upcountry drought)

C. J: IT HAS BECOME ALMOST PREDICTABLE EACH YEAR. WITH THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER COMES THE HEADLINE: "UPCOUNTRY MAUI FACING DROUGHT CONDITIONS."

(vo) KAHAKAPAO RESERVOIR ABOVE OLINDA SERVES UPPER KULA WITH A CAPACITY OF UP TO 100 MILLION GALLONS FROM TWO RESERVOIRS. TODAY, IT'S ONLY AROUND 32 MILLION GALLONS. HOW LONG CAN THAT LAST?

(sot)(Jacky Takakura, Administrative Office, Dept of Water Supply, Maui County)

JT01: "Right now the Olinda Water Treatment Facility is producing about two million gallons of water per day. So, if there were no inflows from the rainforest, this 32 million gallon supply would last about 16 days."

(con't vo) FORTUNATELY RUNNING OUT IS NOT LIKELY. THERE IS THE KAMOLE WEIR WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM, AND WATER AVAILABLE FROM THE PIIHOLO RESERVOIR - MEANWHILE, UPCOUNTRY RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO CONSERVE...BUT JUST HOW DRASTIC A MEASURE DOES THE DEPARTMENT RECOMMEND?

jt02: "cUT YOUR WATERING - SPRINKLING - BY ONE DAY. iT WON'T AFFECT YOUR HEALTH OR SAFETY, OR ANYTHING INDOORS. aND YOUR PLANTS WILL BE JUST A LITTLE BIT DRY. yOU KNOW, PLANTS HAVE SEASONS, TOO."

(on-cam tag) IF THE KAHAKAPAO RESERVOIR RUNS DRY, NOT ONLY WILL MANDATORY REDUCTIONS BECOME EVEN MORE SEVERE, BUT IT WILL GET EXPENSIVE BECAUSE WATER HAS TO BE PUMPED UPCOUNTRY FROM SOURCES BELOW...AND THAT COSTS ABOUT TWICE AS MUCH PER GALLON AS THE WATER DEPARTMENT CHARGES CONSUMERS. THE COUNTY WOULD HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL IF THAT WERE TO HAPPEN.

(Kihei High School)

D. C: THEY WOULD BE THE GRADUATING CLASS OF TWENTY-FIFTEEN. THE FUTURE SITE OF KIHEI HIGH SCHOOL IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO REALITY AFTER A PUBLIC UNVEILING OF THE FINAL THREE POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION SITES.

(vo) A GROUP OF ABOUT SEVENTY PARENTS AND OTHER CONCERNED CITIZENS SHOWED UP AT A KIHEI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MEETING LAST WEEK AS CONSULTANTS - HIRED BY THE HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - EXPLAINED HOW THE LIST OF POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION SITES WAS WHITTLED DOWN FROM AN ORIGINAL ELEVEN TO THREE FINALISTS.

(SOT) (Karlynn Kawahara, Project Manager, Munekiyo & Hiraga, Inc. - hired by state DoE to conduct site studies)

Karlynn-1 "We moved from 11 sites to seven sites down to three sites because DoE criteria: near utilities, near existing or proposed residential development, minimum 50 acres, at capable of at least two vehicle access sites. Four dropped out right away. The we asked landowners how they wanted to be involved, or if they were still interested. Based on their answers, three sites moved on to the next level of the study."

(con't vo) NEXT, THEIR CONSULTANTS WILL MAKE SITE VISITS TO ASSES THINGS LIKE TERRAIN, DRAINAGE, ARCHAEOLOGY, IMPACT ON FLORA AND FAUNA...AND A FEW OTHER CRITERIA.

(SOT-2) (k-2 "Cost for infrastructure improvements. Costs, whether we actually have to buy the land. Those facts will be part of the determination of a final preferred site."

(on-cam tag) THAT CONSULTANT REPORT IS EXPECTED BY MID-AUGUST. AS OF RIGHT NOW - THERE IS NO CLEAR FRONT-RUNNER. THE SLIGHTLY OPTIMISTIC PREDICTION: A NEW KIHEI HIGH SCHOOL OPENING FOR CLASSES IN THE FALL OF 2011.

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

E. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...AN UP-AND-COMING YOUNG FILM MAKER ON MAUI RECEIVES AWARDS AND ACCOLADES FOR HIS CREATIVITY. WE'LL MEET HIM AND SHOW YOU A SAMPLE OF HIS AWARD-WINNING WORK.

C: AFTER A DEVASTATING FIRE IN JANUARY, THE KULA RESERVE IS SET TO OPEN IT'S TRIALS TO THE PUBLIC NEXT WEEK. BUT FOR SOME IMPATIENT TROUBLE-MAKERS, THAT ISN'T SOON ENOUGH.

J: AND THE SWEET SOUND OF A UNIQUELY-HAWAIIAN MUSICAL CREATION FILLS THE AIR OVER CENTRAL MAUI. WE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE KIHO-ALU FESTIVAL.

C: ALL THAT, PLUS SPORTS AND COMING ATTRACTIONS WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(PSA Kid)

F. C: BOBBY AND JIMMY. THEY LEAD SUCH DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT LIVES - UNTIL JIMMY'S UNTIMELY DEMISE. BELIEVE IT OR NOT...THE STORY IS VERY FUNNY...EXTREMELY EDUCATIONAL...AND IT ALL HAPPENS IN LESS THAN THIRTY SECONDS. A YOUNG MAUI VIDEO PRODUCER CREATED THE DUO - ON HIS WAY ALONG AN AWARD-WINNING PATH. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER INTRODUCES US TO THE KING KEKAULIKE GRADUATE WHO IS HEADING TO HOLLYWOOD.

(Take PSA Kid pkg)

(On cam tag) "IT'S ELEMENTARY," THE AWARD-WINNING PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT BY DAVID ZALESKI, CAN BE SEEN ON MTV, VH-1, THE FOOD NETWORK, THE SCI-FI CHANNEL, ANIMAL PLANET, THE CARTOON NETWORK AND E! ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION. YOU CAN ALSO SEE THE ANNOUNCEMENT - ALONG WITH THE OTHER AWARD WINNERS - ONLINE. TO GET THERE, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Kula Reserve)

G. J: AFTER A WILDFIRE THAT NEARLY DECIMATED THE ENTIRE FOREST AREA OF THE KULA RESERVE, THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES SAYS THEY'RE READY TO REOPEN TRAILS JULY FIRST - IN TIME FOR SUMMER HIKES.

(vo) BETWEEN JANUARY TWENTY-THIRD AND FEBRUARY FIFTH OF THIS YEAR, NEARLY TWENTY-THREE HUNDRED ACRES WERE CHARRED - AS SEEN IN THIS DRAMATIC DLNR PHOTO TAKEN FROM KAHOOLAWE. MUCH CLOSER UP, THERE IS STILL EVIDENCE IN THE LOWER RESERVE OF THE BLAZE. MUCH OF THE LOWLANDS ESCAPED THE FIRE, THE HILLSIDES AND MEADOWS ARE LUSH AND INVITING – AND THE VIEWS – EVEN ON A HAZY DAY ARE STILL BREATH-TAKING. THE CLOSED SIGNS WILL COME DOWN NEXT WEEK. FOR SOME VANDALS, THOUGH, THAT HASN'T BEEN SOON ENOUGH. EVIDENCE OF OFF-ROAD VEHICLES AND A BENT SECURITY GATE - STRONG ENOUGH TO KEEP VANDALS IN FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES OUT OF THE PARK. HOWEVER, THE SIGN YOU SEE HERE WAS THE THIRD ONE POSTED ON THIS GATE. THE FIRST TWO WERE STOLEN.

(on cam) FORESTRY OFFICIALS TELL MAUI TV NEWS THAT - FARTHER UP THE ROAD - VANDALS ON DIRT BIKES DID EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE PARK'S CABIN. ALSO, A WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE SHACK WAS TORCHED. THE DLNR SAYS THAT THE ORIGINAL FIRE IN JANUARY - IN TERMS OF SIZE AND INTENSITY - WAS ONE OF THE MOST DEVASTATING IN HAWAII IN DECADES. THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF THE FIRE: A CARELESSLY DISCARDED CIGARETTE.

(slack key)

H. C: THE WORLD MAY JUST BE CATCHING ON TO THE SOUND THAT IS UNIQUELY HAWAIIAN, BUT FOLKS ON MAUI HAVE BEEN ENJOYING IT FOR YEARS.

(vo) A CROWD ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN FOUR THOUSAND TURNED OUT FOR THE SIXTEENTH ANNUAL KIHO ALU SLACK KEY GUITAR FESTIVAL SUNDAY AT THE A-AND-B AMPHITHEATER AT THE MAUI ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER. ALONG WITH GREAT MUSIC, FOLKS ENJOYED LOCAL FOOD, ARTS AND CRAFTS AND EVEN THE CHANCE TO WIN A CUSTOM TAYLOR GUITAR.

(on-cam) AMONG THE PERFORMERS WAS PEKELO COSMA, THE HANA NATIVE WHO - JUST LAST WEEK - WON THE HIGHLY-PRIZED "HAKU MELE" AWARD AT THE THIRTIETH ANNUAL NA HOKU HANOHANO AWARDS IN HONOLULU. HIS SON, "NI'IHAU," WON FOR BEST HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE COMPOSITION. COSMA WROTE THE SONG TEN YEARS AGO, DURING A TRIP TO - WHAT HE CALLS - "THE LAST HAWAIIAN PLACE."

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

I. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...GIRLS JUST GETTIN THEIR KICKS! THE MAUI NO KA OI GIRLS SOCCER TOURNAMENT WRAPS UP THIS WEEK ON MAUI. MEANWHILE, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB LOOKS TO MAKE IT TWENTY-THREE IN A ROW. KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH SPORTS! ON MAUI TV NEWS.

C: AND JULIE Y JOINS US AFTER THAT WITH THE RUNDOWN OF COMING ATTRACTIONS, INCLUDING IDEAS FOR DINING, PATRIOTISM, PANIOLOS AND PARADE WATCHING. THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(C-Block)
(Sports!)

J. K: (on-cam) CAN YOU SAY TWENTY-THREE-PEAT? CAN YOU SAY TWENTY-THREE-PEAT? ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS! ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. MY APOLOGIES IF I SOUND A LITTLE LIKE A BROKEN RECORD...BUT IT'S NOT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN WHAT THE COACHES AND CREWS OF HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB ARE DOING THESE DAYS. WITH A TWO-WEEK BREAK COMING UP, THEY WASTED LITTLE TIME GETTING UP TO SPEED - AND STROKED AWAY TO THEIR SECOND-HIGHEST POINT TOTAL AT THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE 2007 M-C-H-C-A CANOE REGATTA SEASON THIS PAST SATURDAY IN KAHULUI.

(vo) HOSTING THEIR OWN, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB OWNED THE LAKE DURING THE JOHN M. AND KEALOHA LAKE REGATTA AT KAHULUI HARBOR. THE LAKE WAS ANYTHING BUT CALM, BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP HAWAIIAN'S CREWS FROM WINNING EARLY AND OFTEN. IN THE BOYS 18 EVENT, NOT ONLY DID THEY TAKE A COMMANDING LEAD BUT WATCH THEM TURN ON A DIME - DESPITE STRONG TRADE WINDS AND CURRENTS. OTHER CREWS DID NOT FARE AS WELL IN THE ONE-MILE EVENT, WITH THREE TEAMS DISQUALIFIED FOR BUMPING THE FLAG.

FOR A WHILE IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS LITTLE FOR OTHER TEAMS TO DO BESIDES CHAT…OR TREAD WATER - BUT HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB TEAM MEMBERS HAD ONE THING ON THEIR MINDS: QUALIFYING CREWS FOR STATE. AND THAT THEY DID - INCREASING THEIR STATURE AT THE UPCOMING STATE PADDLING CHAMPIONSHIPS BY ADDING THREE MORE CREWS - FOR A TOTAL OF THIRTY ONE.

(FF-CG-VO) HERE ARE THE RESULTS FROM SATURDAY'S LAKE REGATTA. HAWAIIAN WON A SEASON HIGH TWENTY-THREE RACES OUT OF FORTY-ONE EVENTS FOR A TOTAL OF 145 POINTS. KIHEI CANOE CLUB SCORED JUST BARELY MORE THAN HALF OF HAWAIIAN'S TOTAL...AND - IN WHAT KAHANA COACH KEKAI KEAHI CALLED THEIR WORST PERFORMANCE IN FIVE YEARS - KAHANA CAME IN THIRD WITH 74. LAU ULA O KAI SCORED A SEASON HIGH SIXTY-TWO POINTS TO TAKE FOURTH. HALF-WAY THROUGH THE CANOE REGATTA SEASON, HAWAIIAN'S 545 POINTS PRETTY MUCH ASSURE A LOCK ON THAT TWENTY-THREE-PEAT I MAY HAVE MENTIONED A LITTLE EARLIER. KAHANA HAS 345 POINTS AND KIHEI IS KEEPING IT CLOSE WITH 332 POINTS FOR THE SEASON.

(ONCAM) AFTER A TWO-WEEK BREAK, THE NEXT M-C-H-C-A EVENT IS ON SEVEN-SEVEN-OH-SEVEN WHEN KAHANA HOSTS THE EVENT AT HANAKAO'O BEACH PARK IN LAHAINA. AND ON THAT LUCK DAY, WE WISH THE VERY BEST LUCK TO ALL PADDLERS.

(VO) MEANWHILE, LAST WEEK, ACROSS THE HARBOR...IT WAS THE YOUNG LADIES GETTING THEIR KICKS DURING THE MAUI NO KA OI GIRLS SOCCER TOURNAMENT AT KEOPUOLANI PARK. OVER FOUR DAYS, TEAMS FROM ACROSS MAUI, THE ENTIRE STATE OF HAWAII AND AS FAR AWAY AS CALIFORNIA COMPETED IN HIGH-LEVEL SOCCER COMPETITION. SEMI-FINAL MATCHES SATURDAY BETWEEN EXCEL AND STARS, HAD ENOUGH ACTION TO FILL A SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS REEL...AND RIGHT NEXT DOOR, THE ACTION WAS JUST AS EXCITING BETWEEN MANUIA AND KO'OLAU.

(on-cam) NEXT UP, THE BOYS TAKE TO THE SOCCER FIELDS OF KAHULUI FOR THE MAUI NO KA OI BOYS SOCCER TOURNAMENT GOING ON NOW THROUGH SATURDAY.

WE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP TABS ON MAUI'S TWO MAJOR LEAGUE PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYERS. NINETEEN NINETY-NINE SAINT ANTHONY'S GRADUATE SHANE VICTORINO IS WARPING UP JUNE ON A HIGH NOTE...BATTING TWO-SEVENTY FOR THE SEASON WITH SEVEN HOMERS, TWENTY-NINE R-B-Is...A TOTAL OF 47 RUNS. HE HAS TWENTY-TWO STOLEN BASES - THIRD BEST IN THE MAJORS. ON DEFENSE, WITH NINE ASSISTS, VICTORINO IS TIED FOR FIRST IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OUTFIELD. MAUI'S OTHER NATIVE SON, KURT SUZUKI, ACTIVATED BY THE OAKLAND A'S JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO, IS BATTING 444, WITH ONE HOMER SO FAR. THE 23-YEAR-OLD WAILUKU NATIVE IS ALSO CONSIDERED THE HEIR APPARENT TO THE FULLTIME CATCHER'S POSITION FOR THE A'S.
