J: THEY'RE HERE! AFTER SUCCESSFULLY PREVENTING THE STINGING NETTLE CATERPILLAR FROM ARRIVING ON MAUI FOR YEARS - TWO HAVE SHOWN UP IN HAIKU.

C: IT'S NOT HERE…YET…AND MAYBE THAT'S A GOOD THING. THE PORT OF KAHULUI IS NOT READY YET FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY.

J: AND IF THERE'S AN EVENT THAT'S MORE FUN THAN THIS ON MAUI...YOU'D HAVE A HARD TIME CONVINCING THESE FOLKS. CANOE SURFING DRAWS CROWDS TO WEST MAUI.

C: IN SPORTS, WE'LL HAVE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CANOE SURFING CONTEST, ALONG WITH LITTLE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL.

J: AND THEN JULIE Y JOINS US WITH THE FULL FARE OF FUN IN COMING ATTRACTIONS. THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)
Open

J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING
C: AND I'M CYNDI MAYO DAVIS. IT'S BEEN ONE OF THE MAJOR SUCCESSES OF THE HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND THE MAUI INVASIVE SPECIES COMMITTEE. BUT THAT SUCCESS HAS COME TO AN END.

(turn to cam)(PiP: caterpillar)

C: THE NETTLE CATERPILLAR, A BRISTLY CRITTER WITH A MOST UNFRIENDLY GREETING, WAS DISCOVERED IN HAIKU. AND NOT JUST ONE...BUT TWO OF THEM SHOWED UP, ABOUT A HALF-MILE APART.
(VO) TWO HAIKU RESIDENTS TURNED THE STINGING CATERPILLARS IN TO THE HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. ONE ON JULY SIXTH AND THE SECOND ONE ON JULY 10TH. ONE STATE OFFICIALS COMMENTED THAT THE DISCOVERY OF THE TWO BUGS IN SUCH CLOSE PROXIMITY WAS UNUSUAL, AND CREWS HAVE COMBED THE AREA FOR TWO WEEKS SINCE THE INITIAL SIGHTING, LOOKING FOR MORE OF THE INVASIVE INSECTS.
THE NETTLE CATERPILLAR GROWS TO ABOUT AN INCH IN LENGTH AND GETS IT NAME AS "THE STINGING CATERPILLAR" BECAUSE OF THOSE SHARP SPINES ALL OVER IT'S BODY.
WHEN HANDLED, THOSE SPINES EASILY BREAK OFF AND PENETRATE THE SKIN, CAUSING A SERIOUS BURN-LIKE SENSATION THAT CAN LAST FOR HOURS, FOLLOWED BY A RASH THAT CAN LAST FOR WEEKS.

(on cam tag)

C: AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS SAY NETTLE CATERPILLARS HAVE BEEN INTERCEPTED ON MAUI IN THE PAST. EACH TIME THE SMALL CATERPILLARS HAVE BEEN TRACKED BACK TO SHIPMENTS OF PLANTS FROM THE BIG ISLAND. JUST LAST MONTH, AFTER NETTLE CATERPILLARS WERE DISCOVERED IN CENTRAL OAHU, OFFICIALS SUSPECTED A HIGH LIKELIHOOD THAT IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THE STINGING CREATURES WERE DISCOVERED ON MAUI. IF YOU SEE THE NETTLE CATERPILLAR, DON'T TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. TRY TO SECURE IT IN A JAR OR OTHER CONTAINER, AND CALL THE STATE'S PEST LINE AT 643-"PEST." FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE NETTLE CATERPILLAR, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(superferry-1)(PiP-SUPERFERRY)

J: PEOPLE WHO FEAR THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES LIKE THE NETTLE CATERPILLAR ARE QUICK TO POINT TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY AS A POTENTIAL CONVEYOR OF INVASIVE SPECIES BETWEEN ISLANDS. WELL, DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE SUPERFERRY ISSUE YOU'RE ON, THERE'S GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.

THE GOOD NEWS...OR BAD NEWS...IS THAT PLANS ARE STILL ON TRACK TO LAUNCH THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY BETWEEN OAHU, MAUI AND KAUAI AS EARLY AS ONE MONTH FROM NOW.

(VO) THIS PAST WEEKEND, SOME 4,000 OAHU RESIDENTS TOURED THE VESSEL AT HONOLULU'S PIER 19...GETTING THE CHANCE TO WALK THE HALLS, SIT IN THE COMFY LOUNGE CHAIRS AND CONTEMPLATE INTERISLAND TRAVEL THROUGH MEANS OTHER THAN BY AIRPLANE. ON MAUI, IT'S A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT STORY. HARBOR OFFICIALS ARE STILL JUGGLING MIGHTY LOADS TO MAKE WAY FOR THE SUPERFERRY. PROGRESS IS STEADY...BUT SLOW, AND IT IS CLEAR THAT THE DELAYS IN THE SUPERFERRY'S TIMELINE HAVE GIVEN MAUI PLANNERS AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT OF BREATHING ROOM IN GETTING THINGS READY. WHILE CONSTRUCTION AND SECURITY MODIFICATIONS CONTINUE, THE QUESTION OF WHERE CARGO AND CONTAINERS WILL BE STORED ONCE FERRY OPERATIONS BEGIN REMAINS TO BE ANSWERED. THE OTHER BIG QUESTION IS...WHERE WILL THE BARGES, TUGS AND SHIPS GO WHEN IT'S TIME FOR THE FERRY TO ARRIVE?

(on-cam tag) NO OFFICIAL DATE HAS BEEN SET YET FOR THE FIRST COMMERCIAL FERRY TRIPS. AND, INTERISLAND SEA TRIALS AND COAST GUARD CERTIFICATIONS HAVE ALSO BEEN DELAYED BY MECHANICAL ISSUES ENCOUNTERED AFTER THE SUPERFERRY'S CROSSING OF THE PACIFIC. ONCE THOSE ISSUES ARE RESOLVED, LOOK FOR THE 350-foot ALUMINUM CATAMARAN TO MAKE SOME PRE-SERVICE VISITS TO KAHULUI HARBOR TO PRACTICE ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES.

(superferry-2)(PiP-superferry)

C: ENGINE TROUBLE, PARKING, HARBOR OVERCROWDING, THE THREAT OF TRANSPORTING INVASIVE SPECIES...AND GETTING THE HARBORS READY IN TIME. THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE WORRIES HAWAII SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS ARE FACING. ON TOP OF ALL THAT, THERE ARE TWO PENDING LEGAL CHALLENGES FOR THEM TO FACE BEFORE THEY TAKE ON THEIR FIRST PAYING PASSENGER.

THE MAJOR LEGAL CHALLENGE TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY COMES FROM RIGHT HERE ON MAUI. THREE GROUPS ARE COUNTING ON THE NEXT ROUND OF COURT HEARINGS - SET FOR MID-AUGUST. IN MAY OF THIS YEAR, SECOND CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE JOEL AUGUST RULED THAT THE HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF MASTER PLAN PROJECTS WAS INADEQUATE WHEN IT CAME TO POTENTIAL IMPACT ON TRAFFIC. IN FACT, IN ADDITION TO POTENTIAL TRAFFIC JAMS AROUND KAAHUMANU AND PUUNENE AVENUES FOR CARS AND TRUCKS ENTERING AND EXITING THE SUPERFERRY...THERE IS NO PARKING AVAILABLE NEARBY FOR SUPERFERRY PASSENGERS WHO PLAN TO LEAVE THEIR VEHICLES BEHIND ON MAUI.
ARGUMENTS BEFORE THE HAWAII SUPREME COURT ARE SET FOR AUGUST TWENTY-THIRD.

BY THE WAY, THE OTHER LEGAL CHALLENGE TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRTY COMES FROM A GROUP ON KAUAI - THAT PLANS TO HIRE A MAINLAND ATTORNEY AND PURSUE A LAWSUIT CHALLENGING HAWAII SUPERFERRY ON THE BASIS OF FEDERAL ENDANGERED SPECIES AND MARINE MAMMAL PROTECTION LAWS.

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...TAKE THE HAWAIIAN SPORT OF KINGS AND COMBINE IT WITH THE ANCIENT FORM OF INTERISLAND TRANSPORTATION, ADD ACROBATICS AND YOU HAVE THE MAKINGS FOR A VERY FUN EVENT. WELL TAKE YOU TO THE FOURTH ANNUAL SUMMER SPLASH CANOE SURFING MEET NEXT.

C: AFTER A DEVASTATING FIRE THAT CLOSED THE KULA RESERVE IN JANUARY, THE AREA REOPENED JULY FIRST. NOW IT'S CLOSED AGAIN BECAUSE OF FIRES. WHAT IS MOST SURPRISING IS WHERE THOSE FIRES ARE. WE'LL HAVE DETAILS FOR YOU.
J: AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR PLANNING THE FUTURE OF SOUTH MAUI ARE CALLED UPON TO EXPLAIN THE PAST AND PRESENT TO RESIDENTS OF MAUI MEADOWS. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(break)
(b block)
(Canurf)

C: ONLY IN HAWAII. OUTRIGGER CANOES - PADDLED AND GUIDED BY ATHLETIC AND AGILE MEN AND WOMEN - COMBINING THEIR EFFORTS WITH A SPORT INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD FROM RIGHT HERE IN THE ISLANDS. PUT IT ALL TOGETHER WITH COSTUMES AND TRICKS AND YOU HAVE THE FOURTH ANNUAL SUMMER SPLASH CANOE SURFING MEET. OUR KALAPANA WAS THERE TO COVER THE ACTION THAT WAS DESCRIBED - MORE THAN ONCE - AS "WACKY."

(Take CANURF pkg)

(On cam tag) A LITTLE LATER, IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS, KALAPANA WILL HAVE EVEN MORE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CANOE SURFING MEET.

(Kula Reserve Fire)(PiP Kula Fire)

J: AFTER A WILDFIRE THAT NEARLY DECIMATED THE ENTIRE FOREST AREA OF THE KULA RESERVE EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES WORKED FOR MONTHS TO BE READY TO REOPEN THE AREA TO RECREATION BY SUMMER.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THEY MET THAT GOAL AND THE TRAILS WERE OPENED JULY FIRST. THE BAD NEWS IS THAT - AFTER BARELY TWO WEEKS OPEN...THE RESERVE IS CLOSED AGAIN - DUE TO FIRE.

(vo) SIGNS ARE BACK UP PREVENTING HIKERS AND CAMPERS FROM ENTERING THE AREA.
THE ENTIRE RESERVE WAS CLOSED LAST WEEK AFTER A FLARE UP CONSUMED SOME EIGHT ACRES OF FOREST NEAR POLIPOLI SPRINGS. CAMPERS AT THE CABIN WERE EVACUATED AS A PRECAUTION BUT THE CABIN WAS NOT DAMAGED.

(on cam) FORESTRY OFFICIALS TELL MAUI TV NEWS THAT THIS FIRE WAS THE LAST FIRE...STILL BURNING. EMBERS AND ENERGY FROM THE JANUARY BLAZE APPARENTLY REMAINED ALIVE IN THE ROOT SYSTEMS OF SOME TREES AND IGNITED BRUSH WHEN THE FLAMES RESURFACED. LOW HUMIDITY IN THIS EXTREMELY DRY YEAR HAVE CAUSED PINE NEEDLES TO BE PARTICULARLY COMBUSTIBLE. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE SAY THE PARK WILL REMAIN CLOSED...UNTIL THERE'S ENOUGH RAIN TO REDUCE THE THREAT OF MORE SPONTANEOUS FLARE-UPS. AND THAT WILL LIKELY BE AT LEAST A MONTH...IF WE GET A GOOD RAIN UPCOUNTRY.

(mAUI MEADOWS)

C: IMAGINE COMING HOME FROM VACATION AND FINDING THAT YOUR NEIGHBOR HAS BUILT AN OHANA JUST SIX FEET FROM YOUR PROPERTY LINE...OR HAS PILED UP 20 FEET OF FILL DIRT AND BUILT A THIRTY-FOOT HIGH HOUSE ON IT. IT'S ALL LEGAL AND IT'S ALREADY HAPPENED IN THE MAUI MEADOWS NEIGHBORHOOD OF SOUTH MAUI.

(vo) AT A COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MEETING LAST WEEK, MORE THAN A HUNDRED RESIDENTS AND OTHER INTERESTED CITIZENS, INCLUDING MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES AND COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER MICHELE ANDERSON, HEARD MAUI COUNTY PLANNING DIRECTOR JEFF HUNT EXPLAIN A LITTLE-PUBLICIZED CHANGE IN THE SUBDIVISION'S ZONING THAT NOW ALLOWS SIX-FOOT SETBACKS AND THE USE OF LOTS OF FILL DIRT FOR FOUNDATIONS. AFTER LEARNING THAT THE 2005 CHANGE IN THE LAW WAS DUE TO THE INTERPRETATION OF A 1958 ZONING RULE, THE MAUI MEADOWS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION FORMED A TASK FORCE TO CHANGE THE LAW BACK TO PRE-2005 STATUS.
(on-cam) A BILL, TO BE INTRODUCED BY COUNCILMEMBER ANDERSON ON JULY 26TH, WOULD DESIGNATE MAUI MEADOWS AS RURAL - ONCE AND FOR ALL.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS...THE GREAT AMERICAN PASTIME COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE FOR TWO OF THE BEST TEAMS IN MAUI COUNTY. KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH FINAL SCORES IN LITTLE LEAGUE, AND THE RESULTS FROM TWO VERY DIFFERENT OUTRIGGER CANOE EVENTS.
C: AND JULIE Y JOINS US AFTER THAT WITH THE RUNDOWN OF COMING ATTRACTIONS, INCLUDING THE "KIMS" OF COMEDY AND SUPER SOUL FROM THE 70'S . THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(Sports!)

K. IT WAS A FIGHT TO THE FINISH IN LITTLE LEAGUE IN KIHEI. ALOHA EVERYONE
AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

DISTRICT THREE LITTLE LEAGUE ACTION IN KIHEI LASTED ONE GAME LONGER THAN MANY EXPECTED WHEN THAT "IF NEEDED" MATCHUP WAS NEEDED LAST THURSDAY IN THE
11-AND-12 YEAR-OLD DIVISION.

(VO) ARCH RIVALS KIHEI AND MOLOKAI FACED OFF IN A WINNER-TAKES-ALL DUEL AT DORVAN LEIS FIELD. ON THE MOUND FOR MOLOKAI WAS DAVID RAPANOT - WHOSE NICKNAME IS "TOUGH"...AND HE WAS! STRIKING OUT SEVERAL BATTERS. ON OFFENSE WAS TOUGH AS WELL. AFTER LETTING ONE BREEZE BY, RAPANOT BLASTED ONE STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE THAT BROUGHT HIM ALL THE WAY AROUND TO THIRD. BUDDY TABIL'S DOUBLE SCORED RAPANOT TO GIVE MOLOKAI THE EDGE IN THE THIRD INNING. WHEN THE MOMENTUM FELT LIKE IT WAS LEANING TOWARD MOLOKAI, IT WAS TIME FOR A CHAT AT THE MOUND. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY TALKED ABOUT, BUT ON THE VERY NEXT AT-BAT, THINGS GOT REAL EXCITING - WITH A GROUND OUT AT FIRST AND A PICKLE DOWN THE THIRD BASE LINE FOR A DOUBLE PLAY HAT WOWED THE KIHEI SUPPORTERS.

ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS LOOK AROUND TO BE REMINDED WHOSE HOUSE THIS WAS.

THEN AGAIN - MAYBE NOT. TWO STRAIGHT INFIELD FLIES REVVED UP THE MOLOKAI ALL-STARS. AND THEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN, IT WAS KIHEI'S JUSTIN CHEATHAM RAPPING A DOUBLE THAT SCORES MARK KARAVIOTIS.

TOP OF THE FOURTH, AND MOLOKAI'S BATS ARE HOT AGAIN. WITH RUNNERS AT FIRST AND THIRD, COULD ANOTHER SUMMIT CONFERENCE ON THE MOUND ANSWER ANOTHER PRAYER? WATCH THE NEXT PITCH. A HOPPER TO SHORTSTOP...A FORCE AT SECOND AND THE THROW TO HOME...GOT HIM!

THE BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH WAS ANOTHER GREAT DEFENSIVE EFFORT BY MOLOKAI - WITH "TOUGH" DAVID RAPANOT STRIKING OUT THE SECOND AND THIRD KIHEI BATTERS, BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH AS THE KIHEI ALL-STARS WENT ON TO WIN THIS ONE, THREE TO TWO...AND TAKING THE DISTRICT THREE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE PROCESS.

(ON CAM) NEXT FOR KIHEI IS THE STATE ELEVEN-TO-TWELVE TOURNAMENT AT KALAELOA ON OAHU.

IT'S OFFICIAL NOW. WITH ONLY THE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA AHEAD, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB HAS CINCHED THEIR 23RD CONSECUTIVE M-C-H-C-A TITLE. THE BLUE CANOES FROM KAHULUI HARBOR WON CONVINCINGLY SATURDAY AT THE MAYOR'S UMEKE REGATTA.

(FF-CG-VO) HAWAIIAN WON TEO MORE RACES THAN THEY DID THE PREVIOUS WEEK TO CAPTURE 140 POINTS FOR THE DAY. KAHANA EDGED KIHEI FOR SECOND SPOT HILE LAU ULA O KAI HAD A STRONG FINISH FOR FOURTH PLACE. WITH ONLY THE CHAMPIONSHIPS AHEAD, HAWAIIAN HAS SCORED AN INSURMOUNTABLE 824 POINTS SO FAR THIS SEASON.
KAHANA IS IN A SOLID SECOND PLACE WITH A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THEIR LEAD OVER KIHEI - WHO STANDS IN THIRD SPOT WITH 480 POINTS.

(ON-CAM) NEXT UP, THE FINAL RACE IN THE COMPETITIVE CANOE REGATTA SEASON.
THE M-C-H-C-A CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA AT HNAKAO'O BEACH PARK IN LAHAINA.

AND SPEAKING OF CANOE COMPETITION, HOW ABOUT A FEW MORE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SUMMER SPLASH CANOE SURFING MEET? I SURE HAD A LOT OF FUN THERE AND - FROM THE LOOKS ON THE FACES OF THE JUDGES, THE OFFICIALS, THE CROWDS AND THE COMPETITORS, THEY DID TOO.

(SPLASH HIGHLIGHTS)
