J: DOWN TO THE WIRE AND THE FINAL CLICK OF THE LOCK REVEALS THE FINAL LIST OF CANDIDATES WE GET TO CHOOSE FROM THE SEPTEMBER PRIMARY. AND SOME SCARY WORDS WERE FLYING AROUND THIS WEEK BETWEEN AND ABOUT TWO OF THOSE MAYORAL CANDIDATES.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK, PLUS WE'LL HEAD UPCOUNTRY TO AN EASY-DOES-IT PLACE THAT'S BEEN SUPER-SERVING FOLKS IN PUKALANI FOR DECADES. THAT'S IN OUR GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL INSTALLMENT.

IN SPORTS, NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI ARE HOT AT HOME - BUT NOT PERFECT. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES BROWN GOES TO THE IAO TO HEAR A WEDDING SINGER. ALL THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND A WHOLE LOT MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. AND THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS - I'M JEFF KING AND THIS IS MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE IN HIGH DEFINITION. THERE'S BEEN AN AWFUL LOT OF JOCKEYING FOR POSITION IN COUNTY, STATE AND FEDERAL JOB OPENINGS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. NOW THAT PART IS OVER AND THE REAL CAMPAIGNING BEGINS.

(TAKE ELECTION PKG)
YARD SIGNS ARE EVERYWHERE BUT THE NUMBERS HAVE THINNED - AT LEAST A LITTLE - NOW THAT THE DEADLINE TO FILE FOR PUBLIC OFFIC HAS PASSED. TUESDAY AT THE OFFICE OF THE MAUI COUNTY CLERK, THERE WAS NO QUESTION ABOUT WHAT THE RULES WERE OR WHEN THE DEADLINE WAS - OR HOW MUCH TIME WAS LEFT. PATROLLING THE HALLS OF THE SEVENTH FLOOR , MAUI COUNTY CLERK JEFF KUWADA WAS READY FOR ANY LAST-MINUTE RUSH - BUT ALSO READY TO LOCK THE DOORS FOR GOOD. AND, IF WOULD-BE ELECTED OFFICIALS DON'T BEAT THE CLOCK AND HAVE THE RIGHT PAPERWORK,

Jeffrey Kuwada, Maui County Clerk

JK01: "Well, that's it. The doors lock at 4-30. We'll process the individuals who are here at 4-30 and anyone who is outside is outside...

AS IT TURNS OUT, TWO LITERALLY LAST-MINUTE FILERS MADE IT IN BEFORE THE DOOR WAS LOCKED FOR GOOD. IN TOTAL THERE ARE 100 PEOPLE WHOSE NAMES WILL BE ON THE BALLOT FOR THE SEPTEMBER 18 PRIMARY. hERE ARE A FEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS:

FOR GOVERNOR, YOU'LL HAVE 11 CHOICES. SAME FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR. THERE ARE ELEVEN PEOPLE RUNNING FOR MAYOR OF MAUI COUNTY. FOR MAUI REPRESENTATION IN STATE SEATS, 21 NSAMES WILL APPEAR ON THE BALLOT TO FILL FOUR SEATS. AND FOR COUNTY COUNCIL, THERE ARE 23 PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO FILL SIX OF THE NINE SLOTS. THREE ARE RUNNING UNCONTESTED.

(ON-CAM TAG) IN THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE THE PRIMARIES WE'LL INTRODUCE YOU TO CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR OFFICE ON OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM. AND IF YOU JUST CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT WHO THEY ALL ARE, THERE'S A LIT OF THEM AVAILABLE NW. JUST GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(ARAKAWA-SHOOT)(PiP-ARAKAWA/CHARMAINE)

J: TWO CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR ARE NO STRANGERS TO MAUI VOTERS - NOR TO EACH OTHER. BUT THIS WEEK SOMETHING VERY STRANGE TOOK PLACE THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE TAKING VERY SERIOUSLY.

(TAKE ARAKAWA PKG) BEING A RADIO DJ IS HIGH-TECH THESE DAYS. THERE'S MP3 FILES, DIGITAL ANALYSIS, AND VOICE RECOGNITION TRANSCRIPTIONS. THE COUNTY EVEN HAS A SHOW ON FRIDAYS TO PROMOT THEIR GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL CAMPAIGN. FORMER MAUI MAYOR - AND CURRENT CANDIDATE ALAN ARAKAWA ALSO HAS A SHOW ON KAOI, AND ALL THAT TECHNICAL STUFF IS HOW MAUI COUNTY SPOKESWOMAN MAHINA MARTIN GOT HOLD OF THE EXACT WORDS SPOKEN BY FORMER MAYOR ALAN ARAKAWA.

Mahina Martin, Spokeswoman, Maui County

MM01: "I learned about it after. What happened was folks who listened to the radio show were so outraged they called and demanded action and I have to agree that Mr. Arakawa's comments were unfortunate. I believe that the County - that the people of Maui County deserve an apology."///

FORMER MAYOR ALAN ARAKAWA - WHO LOST TO CURRENT MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES IN THE 2006 ELECTION, SAYS HE WAS EXPRESSING HIS RIGHT TO TO BE OUTRAGED AT WHAT HE CALLS EXCESSIVE SPENDING. HE POINTS TO THE 1.3-MILLION DOLLAR RENOVATION OF THE MAYOR'S LOBBY ON THE NINTH FLOOR OF THE COUNTY BUILDING - WITH KOA ACCENTSD AND HAND-LAID TILE FLOORS - ALL AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE AFTER HE LEFT OFFICE. HE SAYS A MEMO THAT CAME INTO HIS POSSESSION WAS THE LAST STRAW.

Alan Arakawa, Mayoral Candidate

AA01: What really sparked thuis conversation was there was this memo to Public Works from the Tavares office asking for another 300,000 dollars to complete Phase II renovations of the ninth floor. And we were talking about already spending this money - 1.3 million on such lavish digs. We're looking at senior programs that are being cut. We're looking at everything throughout the County suffering - people on furloughs, offices closed. To spend another 300,000 dollars - to my mind - on renovating what already looks like a hotel lobby is pretty much ridiculous."

THERE'S NO FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUE AT STAKE. ARAKAWA PAYS FOR HIS TIME ON KAOI RADIO AND CAN SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS - WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF BROADCASTING LAW.

MM02: "I think Mr. Arakawa wants to criticize sand he wants to give his views on how current issues are being handled by the administration - and that's within his rights. However, when you reach from making criticism and comments of that nature and you reach far into the realm of suggesting that someone could be harmed - let alone a sitting mayor, it is clerarly careless and reckless asnd this is why I really believe the community deserves an apology."

AA02: "I think what Mahina is getting involved in is - when we were talking about these doors - these security doors - because that keeps you from going into the offices - period. Y'know, I made an off-handed comment that the security there is - what good does it do when the entire rest of the County is open and there's no protection. So even if you go down into the parking lot of the County building, anyone who wanted to could shoot the mayor if she wanted to - or anyplace else in the County for that matter. It was an off-handed comment. Maybe I should have worded it a little bit better, there's no security there, or what the heck. And that was a few seconds and it's being reinterprepeted to cover up the fact that we're actually talking about the excessive spending in the mayor's office."

ARAKAWA HAS OFFERED TO PUT AUDIO PLAYBACK ON HIS WEBSITE TO LET PEOPLE HEAR AND DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES IF HIS INTENT WAS MALICIOUS OR RECKLESS. MARTIN HAS ASKED HIM FOR A FORMAL APOLOGY.

AA03: "I have said I could have said this a little bit better, but if she is terrified because the rest of the County doesn't have any protection, I apologize to her and the administration of the County. It should protect all of its citizens - not just the mayor - or the mayor's office. That's fine. I don't mind doing an apology because I could have worded it better. But the point I was trying to make had absolutely nothing to do with physically attacking Tavares. It was attacking the excessive spending of the office and the ridiculousness of trying to provide a secure system when the rest of the County is open.

IT HAPPENED LAST THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 15TH - AND THE COUNTY HASN'T YET CHOSEN A COURSE OF ACTION.

MM03: "At this point I think we're just reviewing the situation. It's so shocking and people are just so astounded by the fact that someone - a seasoned, experienced public speaker, a former Councilmember - someone who is well-versed in situations that can run the gamut of immediate surprise to a very calculated and deliberate choice of words - would opt to make these comments live, on-air, to a caller and prompt someone to think about how you can cause harm to any individual - elected official or not is absolutely incredible."

(ON-CAM TAG) MAUI COUNTY SPOKESWOMAN MAHINA MARTIN SAYS THE COUNTY IS EXPLORING ITS OPTIONS IN LIGHT OF ANY THREAT TO THE MAYOR, WHETHER SUGGESTED IN JEST OR FOR REAL.

(UNEMPLOYMENT)(PiP-UNEMPLOYMENT)

J: WELL, DO YOU WANT THE GOOD NEWS OR THE BAD NEWS? THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS FOR THE STATE ARE DOWN BY THREE TENTHS OF A PERCENT. THE BAD NEWS IS THAT THEY'RE UP IN MAUI COUNTY.

(TAKE UNEMPLOYMENT VO)

(ON-CAM TAG) THE REPORT IS COMPREHENSIVE, EVEN IF A LITTLE COMPLICATED. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD A COPY OF IT THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. JUST GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(A-TOSS-B)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, IT'S BEEN A FIXTURE IN UPCOUNTRY MAUI FOR LONGER THAN HAWAII'S BEEN A STATE. ON OUR NEXT INSTALLMENT OF GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! WE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE EASY-DOES-IT STORE WHEN WE COME BACK. AND A MAUI ADVERTISING AGENCY ADDS A POWERFUL PARTNER TO FORM A MIGHTY MARKETING MACHINE. DETAILS ON THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL-PUKALANI SUPERETTE)(PiP-GCTLlOGO)

J: WITH A LOT OF US THINKING MORE AND MORE ABOUT BUYING AND SUPPORTING “LOCAL,” MAUI COUNTY’S “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” CAMPAIGN IS A GOOD REMINDER OF JUST HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS.

SO MUCH OF HAWAI’I SMALL BUSINESS IS RUN BY “MOM AND POP” STORES AND THIS WEEK WE TRAVEL TO THE HOLE IN THE HEAVENS IN UPCOUNTRY MAUI TO AN “EASY DOES IT” STORE.

(TAKE GCTL PKG) (Open jingle) Pukalani Superette. Welcome to Upcountry, welcome to your easy does it store."

EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN A FIXTURE IN PUKALANI FOR DECADES, THE PUKALANI SUPERETTE - OR "PUK SOOP" AS MANY OF THE LOCALS CALL IT - GOES WAY, WAY BACK . CO-OWNER ARIC NAKASHIMA'S GRANDPARENTS, TAKEO AND KOME TANIZAKI, IMMIGRATED FROM JAPAN AND OPENED A MOM AND POP BUSINESS.

Aric A. Nakashima, Co-owner, Pukalani Superette,

AN01: "They opened a small grocery story in Wailuku, Maui. Then there was a great fire that destroyed like half the town. Up went there store. So they were - sorta - like homeless. And a friend offered to sell them this property here in Pukalani. They took it up, bought it, purchased it. That must have been 1924 or so, and from there the Tanizaki Store opened."

WHEN THEY INCORPORATED THE BUSINESS IN 1954, THEY GAVE IT A FANCY NEW NAME - PUKALANI SUPERETTE. NAKASHIMA'S GRANDMOTHER, BESIDES BEING A BUSINESS OWNER AND MOTHER OF FOUR, ALSO SERVED AS POOK SUP'S SUSHI AND SAIMIN CHEF, AND PART-TIME POSTMASTER . A CAREER THAT LASTED MORE THAN 40 YEARS. THE STORE HAS BEEN FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE THE BEGINNING. AND ARIC TOLD US WHY THEY CONTINUE TO BE SUCCESSFUL DESPITE THE COMINGS AND GOINGS OF MAJOR CHAIN SUPERSTORES AND OF BIG BOX OUTLETSJUST DOWN THE HILL.

AN02: "Longevity. History. Basically our customers have grown up with the store - a lot of them. If you walk into the store and talk to people they've probably been here with their grandmas, their dads and moms . shopping on the weekends, on the way to the beach and they're doling it too, now, with their families - their kids."

ALSO FROM THE BEGINNING, SERVICE AND LOCAL SELECTION HAS BEEN THEIR FOCUS. AND THEN THERE'S THE IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD JINGLE. ARIC AND HIS BROTHER TRIED TO DESCRIBE PUKALANI SUPERETTE - OVER THE PHONE - TO A JINGLE COMPANY IN CANADA. THEY DESCRIBED UPCOUNTRY MAUI, THE PANIOLO LIFESTYLE AND THEIR EMPHASIS ON SERVICE AND LOCAL SELECTION. THEY ALSO TOLD THEM THE STORE'S MOTTO WAS "THE EASY-DOES IT PLACE." THEY WERE EXPECTING SOMETHING CUTE AND KINDA' HAWAIIAN SOUNDING.

AN03: " But it didn't come out like that. It came out of somebody based in Canada. I guess they had their own ideas. It has a ring to it...so.."

(JINGLE: NAT SOUND)

AND THAT'S BEEN THEIR JINGLE FOR SOME 20 YEARS NOW. AND IN THAT SAME 20 YEAR SPAN COMPETITION HAS COME AND GONE AND COME - BUT ARIC SAYS WHEN YOU COMPARE PRICES - THE BIG BOX STORES DON'T ALWAYS COST LESS - AND AT POOK SUP, THERE'S SOMETHING MORE.

AN04: " But .like I said we have a little niche. There's something for mom all the time and and there's something for the kids all the time, so we try to think that way."

AND NOT MANY CHAIN GROCERY STORES WILL HAVE DAD'S FISH HOOKS RIGHT NEXT TO THE BLEACH. AND PUKALANI SUPERETTE DOES A NON-STOP BUSINESS IN THEIR HOT, FRESHLY PREPARED BENTOS AND OTHER HOT ENTREE ITEMS FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER. IN FACT, AS A MEMBER OF THE MAYOR'S GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL CAMPAIOGN, YOU DON'T EVEN NEED A COUPON - JUST VISIT THE STORE, OR THE STORE'S WEBSITE TO SEE WHAT THE HOT SPECIAL OF THE DAY IS - NO CARDS NECESSARY. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SERVICE AT THE EASY DOES IT PLACE...OR EASY DOES IT STORE.

PARKING IS PLENTIFUL, THE SELECTION IS BURSTING WITH LOCAL QUALITY - EVEN THEIR STRAWBERRY PIE IS MADE WITH KULA STRAWBERRIES - AND LOOK AT THAT PRICE FOR FRESH KULA STRAWBERRIES. 'OHANA HAS ALSO BEEN THE ROOT OF PUKALANI SUPERETTE AND THE TANIZAKI STORE. YOU'LL ALWAYS BE GREETED WITH A SMILE AND IF YOU CAN'T IND SOMETHING , THEY'LL FIND IT FOR YOU. THEY BUY FROM LOCAL FARMERS AND RANCHERS - AND EVEN BACK-YARD FARMERS WHO BRING IN A BUSHEL OR TWO OF MSNGOS, PASPAYAS AND AVOCADOS.

PUKALANI SUPERETTE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF SMALL BUSINESS FLOURISHING BECAUSE THEY SUPER-SERVE THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH FRESHNESS, TOP-NOTCH SERVICE AND A CONVENIENT UPCOUNTRY LOCATION ON MAKAWAO AVENUE IN PUKALANI. SO, FOR CONVENIENCE, SERVICE AND SO MUCH MORE, PUKALANI SUPERETTE IS YOUR EASY DOES IT STORE - MAKING IT AN EASY DECISIONS WHEN YOU GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL.

(ON-CAM TAG) TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MAUI COUNTY’S “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” CAMPAIGN GO TO MAUI-COUNTY-THINK-LOCAL-DOT-COM. CLICK AND PRINT VALUABLE COUPONS GOOD AT MORE THAN 200 BUSINESSES ACROSS MAUI COUNTY. YOU CAN ALSO SIGN UP TO BECOME A MEMBER OF GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL AND - MAYBE SOON YOUR BUSINESS WILL BE FEATURED ON MAUI TV NEWS AND ON KHON-2.

(WATER QUALITY REPORT)(PiP-WATERFALL)

J: HAVE YOU GOTTEN ONE OF THESE YET? THEY'VE BEEN MAILED TO ALL WATER USE ACCOUNT HOLDERS IN MAUI COUNTY. IT'S THE ANNUAL WATER QUALITY REPORT TELLING US HOW GOOD A JOB THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER SUPPLY IS - OR ISN'T DOING - TO PROVIDE THE CLEANEST, SAFEST, HEALTHIEST DRINKING WATER. WE WON'T GO INTO THE DETAILS, BUT YOU CAN DOWN LOAD A COPY OF THE REPORT FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM. AMONG THE THINGS YOU MIGHT FIND INTERESTING IN THE PAMPHLET IS LEARNING WHERE YOUR WATER COMES FROM, HOW ITS TREATED AND HOW SAFE IT IS. THAT'S SPELLED OUT. BUT THERE'S SOMETHING ELSE SPELLED OUT IN THE BROCHURE. - A FAILURE ON THE PART OF TH WATER DEPARTMENT TO TEST FOR CYANIDE IN DRINKING WATER. YES, CYANIDE. THE REPORT EXPLAINS THAT SAMPLES WERE NOT PICKED UP IN 2009 DUE TO AN OVERSIGHT. HOWEVER, SUBSEQUENT TESTS SAY WATER IN THE WAILUKU SYSTEM - AT LEAST - IS FREE FROM ANY CYANIDE. BUSINESSES, RENTERS AND PART-TIME RESIDENTS MAY NOT GET THE REPORT AND IT HAS LOTS OF USEFUL INFORMATION IN HERE. FOR DETAILS ON ORDERING A COPY, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(GILBERT & ASSOC-PARTNERSHIP)

J: YOU SEE THEIR COMMERCIALS ALL THE TIME - WELL NOT THEIR COMMERCIALS, BUT COMMERCIALS THEY DESIGN AND PRODUCE FOR THEIR VERY SUCCESSFUL CLIENTS. NOW IT'S THE ADVERTISING AGENCY THAT'S IN THE SPOTLIGHT. GILBERT AND ASSOCIATES HAS BEEN A MARKETING AND ADVERTISING MECCA ON MAUI FOR 35 YEARS. NOW THEY'VE FORMED A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH HONOLULU-BASED COMMUNICATIONS PACIFIC. BOTH COMPANIES DO SOME OF WHAT EACH OF THEM DO INDIVIDUALLY - BUT THIS PARTNERSHIP ADDS STRENGTHS TO BOTH TEAMS. LARRY GILBERT SAID HE'S THRILLED AT THE POSSIBILITIES, AS IT WILL ALLOW THEM TO SHOW OFF THEIR SKILLS TO AN EVEN BROADER CLIENT BASE IN HAWAI'I. COMMPAC SAYS THEY'LL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING SKILLS OF GILBERT AND ASSOCIATES AND ADD THEM TO THEIR SOLID TRACK RECORD IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNITY BUILDING. THE PRESS RELEASE DOESN'T INDICATE THAT THERE WILL BE ANY CONSOLIDATION OF POSITIONS - SO NO JOBS APPEAR TO BE GOING AWAY. RATHER, THEY PLAN TO EXPAND THE BUSINESS HORIZONS OF BOTH COMPANIES.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, AFTER A BUMPY LANDING BACK HERE AT HOME, NA KOA IKAIKA HAS HAD PRETTY SMOOTH SAILING HEADING INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THEIR SEASON. . WE'VE GOT DETAILS UP NEXT IN SPORTS. AND, PAUL JANES-BROWN TOLERATES LEISURE SUITS AND TEAL TUXEDOS TO BRING US HIS REVIEW OF "THE WEDDING SINGER" IN HIS CURTAIN CALL REPORT. THAT, PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: J: CHECKING SPORTS, NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI MADE THEIR MAGIC NUMBER AND JUST IN TIME CLAIM THE TITLE OF TOP DOG IN THE SOUTH DIVISION OF THE GOLDEN BASEBALL LEAGUE. THEY STARTED THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON HERE AT HOME AND AFTER A THREE-GAME WIN STREAK SUFFERED THEIR FIRST LOSS OF THE DOWNHILL SIDE OF THE SEASON, LOSING TO TUCSON SUNDAY NIGHT BY A SCORE OF 4 TO 3.

AND THE MAUI BIG LEAGUE TEAM IS KNOCKING THEM OUT OF THE PARK IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THE LITTLE LEAGUE WESTERN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT SAW MAUI EDGE SAN JOSE 2 TO ON SUNDAY, ASSURING THEM A BERTH IN THE SEMI-FINAL ROUND. IF THEY WIN THAT GAME THEY QUALIFY FOR THE BIG LEAGUE WORLD SERIES SET FOR THE END OF THIS MONTH IN EASLEY, SOUTH CAROLINA.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP - PJB)

J: MAUI ON STAGE IS PRESENTING THE WEDDING SINGER - BASED ON THE 1998 ADAM SANDLER MOVIE - FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKENDS PAUL JANES-BROWN HAS THIS REVIEW FOR CURTAIN CALL

PJB: THE WEDDING SINGER, WRITTEN BY MATTHEW SKLAR, CHAD BEGUELIN AND TIM HERLIHY IS A GREAT THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH.

DIRECTOR LISA TEICHNER, WHO HAS DONE EXCELLENT WORK. HAS FOUND THE PERFECT CAST AND ANY DIRECTOR WILL TELL YOU THAT 95% OF THE JOB IS CASTING.

THE WEDDING SINGER WELCOMES A NEW STAR TO THE MAUI SCENE. FRESH FROM NYU DRAMA SCHOOL JACQUI SHERWOOD WHO PLAYS JULIA SULLIVAN HAS EVERYTHING ANYONE COULD WANT IN AN INGÉNUE. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL A TERRIFIC ACTOR AND SHE’S GOT BROADWAY QUALITY PIPES AND A SENSUOUS INNOCENCE ABOUT HER THAT IS QUITE BEGUILING.

HER DUETS WITH ROBBIE HART PLAYED BY MARK BOLDEN ARE AURAL GIFTS.

ANOTHER WELCOME NEWCOMER TO THE MAUI THEATER SCENE IS CHARLES COOK WHO BEARS A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE TO TAYE DIGGS AND SINGS LIKE SMOKEY ROBINSON. AS ROBBIE HART’S NEMESIS HE EXUDES POWER, SENSUALITY AND CHARISMA.

SOME WILL REMEMBER MONICA BARNAS AS ESSIE IN THE EXCELLENT YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU. SO WE KNEW SHE COULD ACT AND DANCE, BUT THE WOMAN CAN SING TOO. AS HOLLY SHE HAS SEVERAL SHOW STOPPING NUMBERS.

BOLDEN, WHO IS A NASA ASTRO PHYSICIST HAS DEFINITELY COME DOWN OFF THE MOUNTAIN AND TAKEN CENTER STAGE. WITH HIS BOYISH CHARM AND CHISELED, BLOND, SURFER DUDE GOOD LOOKS HE ALWAYS HAD THE ABILITY TO DRAW ATTENTION, BUT IN THIS SHOW HE PROVES HE’S NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE. HE KICKS IT OUT AS A SINGER AND HIS ACOUSTIC NUMBERS ARE CHICKEN SKIN INDUCING. HE ALSO MAKES US FEEL ROBBIE’S CONFUSION ABOUT BEING DUMPED AT THE ALTAR, SUBSEQUENT DEPRESSION AND ULTIMATE REDEMPTION.

CASEY MURPHY HAS THE BIGGEST LITTLE ROLE IN THE SHOW. SHE PLAYS THE PART OF ROBBIE’S JILTER FIANCÉE. SHE HAS TWO UNFORGETTABLE NUMBERS A NOTE FOR LINDA AS BRIDEZILLA IN THE FIRST ACT AND I WANT TO COME HOME IN THE SECOND. HER COSTUME MAKES CAT WOMAN LOOK LIKE A SCHOOL GIRL AND HER LACK OF A COSTUME LATER IN THAT ACT IS A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE.

THESE PRINCIPALS ARE ALL OFF THE CHARTS EXCELLENT, BUT THE SUPPORTING CAST IS EQUALLY GOOD. I PARTICULARLY ENJOYED THE MULTI-TALENTED REUBEN CARRION AS MR T AND ROBBENN ROBB’S BILLIE IDOL, DAVID FRANK GALLAGHER’S RONNIE REGAN AND MARNIE MEUSER’S NANCY.

THE NIGHT I SAW THE SHOW KALANI WHITFORD WAS ILL AND ALY CARDINALLI, THE SUPERB CHOREOGRAPHER HAD TO STEP IN WITH FIVE HOURS NOTICE. YOU COULD NOT TELL THAT HE HADN’T BEEN DOING GEORGE FROM THE BEGINNING. THE DANCING IN THIS SHOW IS SOME OF THE BEST ADULT SHOW DANCING I HAVE SEEN ON A MAUI STAGE.

SARAH LONEY NOT ONLY DANCED IN THE SHOW BUT THE OTHER ASTRO PHYSICIST WAS THE COSTUME DESIGNER AND SHE CAPTURED THE SPIRIT AND FLAVOR OF THE ERA PERFECTLY.

BUT THE REAL STAR OF THIS SHOW IS THE AMAZING MUSICAL DIRECTOR VANIA JEROME, HER INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE BALANCES PERFECTLY WITH THE SIGNERS AND SHE HAS BROUGHT THE ENTIRE SHOW TO A LEVEL OF MUSICIANSHIP SELDOM SEEN IN AMATEUR THEATER. BRAVA MS. JEROME

THE UBIQUITOUS CARO WALKER DESIGNED THIS SET AS WELL. DOES THAT WOMAN EVER SLEEP? AND BONNIE PRUCHA OUR FINEST LIGHTING PERSON PUT TOGETHER A GREAT LIGHT SHOW.

THE SHOW CONTINUES FOR TWO MORE WEEKENDS. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO MAUITVNEWS.COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS.

WELL THAT’S CURTAIN CALL FOR THIS WEEK I’M PAUL JANES-BROWN A HUI HOU AND GO SEE LIVE THEATER STAY TUNED FOR COMING ATTRACTIONS – UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, RIGHT AFTER THESE MESSAGES

(D-Block)
