J: OUR STATE'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE WEARS PUKA SHORTS AND SWIMS MILES A DAY. AND THE PLACE SHE DOES IT - THE YMCA - IS PROUD TO BOAST HER AS A MEMBER, ALTHOUGH THEY'RE CHANGING THEIR NAME - SORTA. AND IS THIS GUY CRAZY, DEDICATED, FRENZIED, OR WHAT?

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE SOME OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS WE'LL TAKE YOU TO A CANDIDATE FORUM IN KIHEI AND A HALLOWED BLESSING AT KAHULUI HARBOR. IN SPORTS, NO KOA IKAIKA MAUI TAKES A FEW WEEKS OFF - AND GETS RUSTY - AND IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES-BROWN GETS TRICKED BY KUPANAHA.

ALL THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND A WHOLE LOT MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. AND THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS I'M JEFF KING - AND THIS IS MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST. POLITICS CAN BRING OUT THE BEST AND WORST IN PEOPLE AND THIS WEEK WE SAW AND HEARD ABOUT A FEW EXAMPLES OF EACH. FIRST, THE WORST.

(VO) SUNDAY MORNING IN WAILUKU, SECURITY CAMERAS CAUGHT THIS HAPPY FELLOW ON TAPE. HE PULLS UP TO THE SIDE OF A BUILDING - NO SEATBELT, YOU NOTICE, JUMPS OUT AND RIPS DOWN AN ARAKAWA FOR MAYOR SIGN. AFTER WADDING IT UP HE JUMPS BACK INTO HIS ILLEGALLY PARKED CAR AND SPEEDS OFF - AGAIN NO SEATBELT. WHILE YOU WATCH AGAIN WE'LL TELL YOU THAN ARAKAWA TOLD US ON TUESDAY THAT A POLICE REPORT HAS BEEN FILED. POLICE CONFIRM THAT THE CHARGES WOULD BE CRIMINAL PROPERTY DAMAGE AND THEFT. HOWEVER MAUI POLICE SAY THAT AN ARREST WARRANT HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED.

(CON'T VO) ARAKAWA WAS ONE OF EIGHT MAYORAL CANDIDATES TO ATTEND A FORUM ON TUESDAY SPONSORED MY THE MAUI WEDDING EVENT PLANNERS. HIS OUTFIT WASN'T A GIMMICK TO SUPPORT "TEAM ARAKAWA," HE SAID. FACT WAS HE WAS PLAYING RIGHT AFTER THAT APPEARANCE IN A SENIORS SOFTBALL GAME IN WAILUKU. THE KIHEI FORM GENEROUSLY OFFERED EACH CANDIDATE 10 MINUTES TO DETAIL THEIR PLATFORM BEFORE OPENING UP THE ROOM TO QUESTIONS.

(ON-CAM) THERE ARE SEVERAL MORE CANDIDATE RALLIES PLANNED BEFORE THE SEPTEMBER 18TH PRIMARY. TWO OF THE BIGGEST FORUMS ARE SET FOR KULA AND KIHEI. WE HAVE DETAILS IN COMING ATTRACTIONS LATER IN THIS NEWSCAST.

(LINGLE)(PiP-LINGLE)

J: AND SHE'S NOT A POLITICAL CANDIDATE, BUT A VERY BUSY WOMAN WITH MILES TO GO BEFORE SHE SLEEPS - AND NO INTENTIONS OF SLOWING DOWN. SHE DID PAUSE, HOWEVER, TO GIVE HER PERSPECTIVE ON THE UPCOMING GOVERNOR'S RACE TO PICK THE MAN WHO WILL TAKE HER PLACE.

(TAKE LINGLE PKG) SHE'S GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO BECOMING "CITIZEN" LINGLE, AND LAST SATURDAY SHE GAVE PROOF BY DIVULGING THAT SHE LIKES TO WEAR HER PUKA SHORTS, NO MAKEUP AND SWIM 3,000 YARDS SIX DAYS A WEEK AT THE YMCA IN HONOLULU. SHE'S THE FIRST GOVERNOR IN HAWAI'I HISTORY TO DECLINE FREE MEMBERSHIP IN PRIVATE COUNTRY CLUBS. BEFORE HER REMARKS AT SATURDAY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAUI FAMILY YMCA GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE GREETED OLD AND NEW FRIENDS, AND GAVE US HER PERSPECTIVE ON THE UPCOMING ELECTION TO FILL HER POST. FIRST WE ASKED IF SHE WAS SURPRISED THAT THE SUPERFERRY HAD COME UP AS AN ISSUE SO EARLY IN THE CAMPAIGNING - AND SHE HAD SOME SHARP WORDS.

Linda Lingle, Governor, State of Hawai'i

LL01: "I'm surprised that Hannemann, in particular, would talk in such uninformed terms about the Superferry. he really has no background to say anything about wanting to bring it back after doing nothing to help during the process - never wrote a letter, never came in and testified - never talked to me about it or how he could help. I think it's just election year rhetoric."///

HER TONE SOFTENED SIGNIFICANTLY ON THE TOPIC OF THE CIVIL UNIONS BILL AND IT'S PLACE IN THE CAMPAIGN.

LL02: "On the Civil Unions Bill, I expect that would be a campaign issue and I expect it'll be an issue in the Legislature because it's so important to so many people on both sides of the issue so I won't be surprised if it comes up again next year."

HER DAYS AT THE HELM OF THE SHIP OF STATE ARE NUMBERED - SO WE ASKED HOW THE GOVERNOR ENVISIONED THE HEADLINE OF THE LINGLE LEGACY.

LL03: "Well I hope what people remember about the Lingle-Aione administration is very full. In other words it's not just one thing - but it's energy independence, it's that we guided the state through the toughest fiscal crisis in the state's history; that we brought STEM education and robotics into the schools. I hope it's all those things as well as the juduicial appointments I've made. People have tal;ked a lot about that in recent weeks. It's top-of-mind right now because I've submitted a nominee for the next Chi10:44 AM 8/6/2010ef Justics of the Supreme Court. It's a woman. It would be the first time a woman has been chief justice. But it would also be the first time a University of Hawai'i Law School graduate has ever sat on the Supreme Court, so there are a lot of firsts wrapped up in that nomination."///

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT GOVERNOR LINGLE ADMITS IS A MAJOR FRUSTRATION IS THE SLOWNESS OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY. INDEED MORE THAN HALF OF THE JOBS CREATED IN HAWAII BY FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS ARE GOING TO GOVERNMENT JOBS AND NOT TO STIMULATE THE PRIVATE SECTOR AS PROMISED.

LL04: "The real recovery for Hawai'i and for th rest of the country is to regain confidence. Right now there is so much uncertainty at the federal level that businesses are holding back. There's a lot of capital available in the United States economy that's sitting on the sidelines because they are very uncertain about what this administration and this congress is doing - whether it's in health care issues or in this financial - they call it reform - it's a real mixed bag and people are just scared of what's going to happen next. They want to see some stability. I also think they're waiting to get through the 2010 Congressional elections to see if the Republicans do take control of the House so there's a more balanced approach. I think that'll bring more capital into the market. But until that happens - until there's more certainty - people are hanging bacvk on the sidelines. Now for us in Hawai'i, we've been very fortunate. Our unemployment has remained relatively low. We need more job creation - that's our primary focus and we try to bring stability and certainty at home."///

(ON-CAM TAG) THE GOVERNOR WAS ON MAUI TWICE LAST WEEK - DURING THE SATURDAY CELEBRATION AND THE Y AND LAST WEDNESDAY AT LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DUKE AIONA'S BIRTHDAY BASH FUNDRAISER.

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, IT MAY BE THE MOST NATURAL THING IN THE WORLD. IT CERTAINLY IS A LOCAL THING, SO ON GOT CHOICE, THINK LOCAL, WE TAKE YOU TO A MAUI THING. AND ANOTHER UNIQUELY MAUI HUI ALSO CELEBRATED FIFTY YEARS OF EXISTENCE THIS WEEK. WE'LL TAKE YOU THE BLESSING OF THEIR NEW HALE AT HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB. THOSE STORIES AND MUCH MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL)(PiP-GCTL)

J: WITH A LOT OF US THINKING MORE AND MORE ABOUT BUYING AND SUPPORTING “LOCAL,” MAUI COUNTY’S “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” CAMPAIGN IS A GOOD REMINDER OF JUST HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS.

AND IN THIS “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” REPORT WE TAKE YOU TO A PLACE WHERE BEING LOCAL IS A MAUI THING.

(TAKE GCTL PKG) WHEN THE BACKUP BAND FOR YOUR FASHION SHOW IS FRONTED BY NONE OTHER THAN UNCLE WILLIE K - THAT'S A MAUI THING. AND WHEN YOUR LOGO IS A TAKO, HE'E, AN OCTOPUS IN THE SHAPE OF THE VALLEY ISLE, THAT'S A MAUI THING. AND WHEN YOU'RE A RED-HOT, AFFORDABLE TRENDY FASHION OUTLET THAT'S NOT STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MALL - THAT'S DEFINITELY A MAUI THING. AND IT'S BEEN A MAUI THING FOR TWO YEARS..OR IS IT THREE.

Ashley Takitani, Marketing Dir., Maui Thing

AT01: "The store opened two years ago. The brand actually started three years ago. It's through a local graphic design compnay that's actually right up the street. The owner, Saedene Ota owns the graphic design company. It kinds' just started as a creative outlet for the designers to design clothes anddo something fun on the side. And within a year a lot of people liked it and bought it so we opened the store two years ago. It's been doing really well. It's right in the heart of Wailuku - which is our home and, being that we're local we love that it's right here - it's close to everyone - our friends and family, and it's supported by the greatest community in the world."

AND THAT, IN A NUTSHELL DESCRIBES MAUI THING. IT'S A "MAUI THING."

AT02: "Exactly. It's a Maui Thing. All the designs are inspired by good things on Maui and Maui things. Everything from peace to local traditions, local culture. So we really, really try to make our designs inspired by good things on Maui."

WHILE MAUI THINGS COME IN ALL CHAPES, SIZES AND COLORS, THEIR BOTTOM LINE LOGO IS THE HE'E - THE OCTOPUS WHOSE STCKY TENTACLES STRETCH OUT FROM A BODY SHAPED LIKE THE ISLAND.

AT03: "Exactly. So the body is in the shape of Maui and we're 'stuck on good.' so we're inspired by good things on Maui."

A TEAM OF FIVE LOCAL DESIGNERS - HEADED UP BY MAUI THING FOUNDER AND INSPIRATION SAEDENE OTA - COMES UP WITH THE LOCAL LOOKS, AS WELL AS ADAPTING THE SUGGESTIONS AND ART CREATED BY LOCAL KEIKI, AND THEY DRAW A SIGNIFICANT FOLLOWING OF CUSTOMERS WHO VISIT MAUI FROM THE MAINLAND AS WELL AS THE OTHER ISLANDS IN HAWAII - AND DID WE MENTION THAT THE KEY WORD HERE IS "LOCAL?"

AT04: "I live right up the street."

THEIR FIRST FRIDAY FASHION SHOW LAST MONTH COULD HAVE JUST AS EASILY BEEN IN PARIS OR NEW YORK. EXCEPT PARIS AND NEW YORK DON'T HAVE WILLIE K AND THEY DON'T HAVE MAUI THING - AT LEAST NOT YET. BUT MAUI THING HAS A SIGNIFICANT FOLLOWING ON O'AHU AND THAT MAY BE JUST THE BEGINNING.

AT05: "I'm not sure why but when O'ahu come to Maui they coming shopping here - they love it. And , y'know, we have cute designs. We have trendy clothing, but I'm hoping that, eventually it'll go statewide, then countrywide, then worldwide eventually."

AND MAUI THING ON FIRST FRIDAYS - EVEN WITHOUT A WORLD-CLASS FASHION SHOW - IS A MUST-STOP TO CHECK OUT FASHIONS AND LOCAL ART. THEY FEATURE THE WORK OF YOUNG LOCAL ARTISTS INSIDE THE STORE AND OUT - AND THEY SPONSOR LOCAL SURFERS AND BODYBOARDERS BECAUSE, THEY'RE, WELL, STUCK ON GOOD AND IT'S A MAUI THING.
IN MARKETING, TOP-OF-MIND IS EVERYTHING. AND AT MAUI THING, EVERYTHING IS A MAUI THING. TO SWEETEN THE POT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T TREKKED TO NORTH MARKET STREET, HERE'S AN ENTICEMENT. GO TO MAUI COUNTY THINK LOCAL DOT COM AND PRINT A COUPON. HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL GET.

AT06: "Our Got Choice Think Local special is five dollars off any purchase of 20 dollars or more. Yeah!"

AND - IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT TO MARKET STREET IN WAILUKU, THERE'S A PRETTY GOOD CHANCE A MAUI THING MAY BE HAPPENING NEAR YOU. THEY'RE VERY INVOLVED IN THE ANNUAL SEABURY HALL CRAFT FAIR AND THE'RE TAKING PART IN THE "MADE IN HAWAI'I FEST" ON O'AHU AT THE END OF AUGUST.

REVITALIZING WAILUKUTOWN IS NO EASY TASK - BUT WHEN A THING LIKE THIS HAPPENS ON FIRST FRIDAYS, AND A THING LIKE THIS STORE IS CENTERED IN THE HEART OF WAILUKU, WHEN YOU GOT CHOICE, THINK LOCAL...CUZ IT'S A MAUI THING.

(ON-CAM TAG) TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MAUI COUNTY’S “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!” CAMPAIGN GO TO MAUI-COUNTY-THINK-LOCAL-DOT-COM. CLICK AND PRINT VALUABLE COUPONS GOOD AT MORE THAN 200 BUSINESSES ACROSS MAUI COUNTY.

(HCC-50)(PiP-HCC LOGO)

J: IN 1960, THE STATE OF HAWAII WAS ONE YEAR OLD. AS WE LEARNED EARLIER IN THIS NEWSCAST, THE YMCA OPENED IT'S DOORS IN 1960. AND NEARBY ON THE SHORE OF KAHULUI HARBOR - A HUI WA'A WAS BORN. WHILE THERE ARE MANY PADDLING CLUBS IN THE STATE - IN ALL OF HAWAI'I - THERE'S ONLY ONE HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB.

(TAKE HI BLESSING PKG) AT 5 OCLOCK LAST FRIDAY AN IMU FIRE IS BLAZING HOT. THERE'S A LU'AU TOMORROW NIGHT. BUT TONIGHT IS THE BEGINNING OF THE CELEBRATION - THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB. TO MARK THE OCCASION, THIS HALE - KUPAA AND MAIKA'I, WILL BE BLESSED AND BECOME A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE CULTURE OF ALL THAT ENCOMPASSES THE LIFE OF HO'E WAA - PADDLING CANOE.

IN A TOUCH CEREMONY, MELE AND OLI WERE FOLLOWED BY THE OFFERING OF WATER AND HO'OKUPU FROM THE 12 MOKU OF MAUI. THE HALE WAS BLESSED AS A SILENT CROWD WITNESSED. ONCE THE MAILE WAS CUT WITH A KO'I - THE BLESSING MOVED INSIDE, ANDALL WHO ENTERED WERE MOVED AS WELL. THE EVENT CONTINUED - INCLUDING A HA'A LED BY MASTER HALE BUILDER, UNCLE FRANCIS SINENCI. IN HIS ADDRESS TO THE CROWD, HE PRAISED ALL WHO WORKED ON THE AHLE OVER THESE LAST FOUR MONTHS - AND POINTED OUT THAT ALL WHO WORKED ON IT - FROM THE FULL-TIME VOLUNTEER TO THE LAST DAY OPALA PICKER - ALL DESERVED EQUAL PRAISE. THEN, ONE FINAL GIFT - AN OFFERING OF THE CUT MAILE ON A STAFF - PRESENTED TO CLUB PRESIDENT DAVE WARD.

IN FITTING FASHION FOR THE CLUB THAT PRIDES ITSELF ON IT'S YOUTH PROGRAMS, IT WAS THE KEIKI WHO HAD THE LAST WORDS - IN OLI. AND MELE.

AFTERWARDS UNCLE FRANCIS EXPLAINED THAT HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR MANY YEARS. HE'S WORKED ON CANOES BUT HIS SPECIALTY IS TRADITIONAL HALES LIKE THIS ONE.

Francis P. Sinenci, Hale Builder

FS02: "I have a canoe that was carved by Fafa, but they build the canoes - I build the hales. Every car needs a garage, right?"

WHILE EVERYTHING IS AS TRADITIONAL AND OLD-SCHOOL AS IT GETS, THERE IS A DECIDEDLY MODERN THOUGHT PROCESS - LIKE HOW TO MAKE SURE THIS STRUCTURE STAYS STANDING TALL ALONG THE WINDSWEPT SHORES OF KAHULUI HARBOR.

fs01: "If a hurricane comes some of the leaves are going to fly off but like the big coconut tree, it bends. Hopefully this hale bends, too. And it has a value of absorbing energy. If you hold the leaf away from the hale, it tends to want to fly with the wind, but as soon as it touches the hale everything is neutral. So it's like a stealth jet. It absorbs the energy and dissipates in the leaves."

AS A MEMBER OF THE MAUI COUNTY INDIGINOUS ARCHITECTS COMMITTEE, SINENCI SECURED ALL THE PERMITS AND MET ALL THE STANDARDS - AND EVEN THOUGH NEARLY ALL THE MATERIALS GROW ON TREES, IT'S NOT INEXPENSIVE.

FS03: "I think if you had to attach a vaue to this thing, it would be about 175,000 dollars - plus."

BUT OF COURSE IT'S GENUINE VALUE IS PRICESLESS. THE HALE AT HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB WILL BE A GATHERING PLACE, A PLACE TO TALK STORY AND PRACTIVE MELE, OLI AND HULA AND - OVERALL - SERVE AS THE CULTURAL PIKO, OR CENTER, OF HOALOHA PARK.

THE STRENGTGHOF HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB - FOR ALL OF IT'S 50 YEARS - HAS GROWN FROM THE YOUTH. AND UNCLE FRANCIS SEES THIS BNAD NEW HALE JUST LIKE A NEWBORN TREASURE.

FS04: "It's just like another baby born. I don't have any children but this is like one of my children. It's ahappy occasion that it's born - finally - but it's sad that all the cameraderie, all the good times will just have to move to the next hale - which is going to be in Lahaina, hopefully."

THE BLESSING IS OVER. IT'S SIX O'CLOCK. WHILE YOUNG MEN ATTEND TO THE IMU FOR TOMORROW NIGHT'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY LU'AU, IT'S BACK TO WORK FOR THE KEIKI - BECAUSE THERE ARE STILL RACES TO COME.

(ON-CAM TAG) THE WORK ETHIC AND CHARACTER BUILDING ASPECT OF TRAINING AT HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB HAS BENEFITTED THOUSANDS OF LIVES - BOTH THROUGH MEMBERS WHO GREW UP PADDLING, AND THEIR FAMILIES. AND THEIR RECORD ON THE SEAS IS UNMATCHED. HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB HAS WON EVERY MAUI COUNTY HAWAIIAN CANOE ASSOCIATION PADDLING CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE PAST 26 YEARS. UP NEXT FOR THEM IS THE STATE REGATTA AT KE'EHI LAGOON ON O'AHU THIS SATURDAY.

(july rainfall)(PiP-raindrop)

J: YOU DON'T NEED A GAGE TO MEASURE HOW MUCH RAIN DIDN'T FALL LAST MONTH IN MOST PARTS OF MAUI COUNTY. THERE WERE LOTS OF ZEROES IN THE JULY REPORT.

(FF-CG-VO) A TOTAL OF NOTHING FELL FROM RAINCLOUDS IN WAILUKU, ALMOST NOTHING IN KIHEI AND REAL CLOSE TO NOTHING IN KAHULUI AND PUKALANI.

ACROSS THREE DAYS THERE WERE A COUPLE OF CLOUDBURSTS. ON JULY 17TH, PU'U KUKUI RECEIVED A LITTLE MORE THAN FOUR INCHES OF RAIN - NEARLY A QUARTER OF THE MONTHLY TOTAL. AND ON JULY 19TH, ULUPALAKUA RANCH GOT NEARLY AND INCH AND A HALF OF RAIN IN A THREE-HOUR STORM. THAT WAS MORE THAN THEY'D RECEIVED IN THE PREVIOUS THREE MONTHS.

(ON-CAM) MAUI COUNTY IS STILL IN LEVEL; D-2 DROUGHT CONDITIONS WITH A REQUESTED FIVE PERCENT WATER USE REDUCTION FOR UPCOUNTRY USERS AND A 10 PERCENT REQUEST FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTH MAUI WATER CUSTOMERS. ON MOLOKA'I THE KUALAPU'U RESERVOIR IS STILL DANGEROUSLY LOW AND THERE' REMAINS A MANDATORY 20 WATER REDUCTION REQUIREMENT FOR IRRIGATION FOR THE WESTERN TWO THIRDS OF THE ISLAND. INCIDENTALLY, THE LAST TIME THE ENTIRE STATE OF HAWAI'I WAS CONSIDERED OFFICIALLY DROUGHT-FREE WAS APRIL, 2008.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT IN SPORTS, AFTER A MID-SEASON BREAK NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI IS BACK ON THE FIELD - WITH MIXED RESULTS. AND, IN CURTAIN CALL, THE RESULTS ARE MYSTIFYING. PAUL JANES-BROWN REVIEWS KUPANAHA. ALL THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI LOVES IT HERE AT HOME - AND WHY NOT? THEY'VE WON EIGHT OUT OF EVERY 10 GAMES THEY'VE PLAYED THERE. AFTER NEARLY TWO WEEKS OFF, THOUGH, NA KOA COOLED OFF THIS WEEK - LOSING TO THE EDMONTON CAPITALS MONDAY NIGHT AT MAEHARA STADIUM, 6 TO 5. BUT THEY BOUNCED BACK BIG ON TUESDAY, DEFEATING EDMONTON 12-3. NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI CONTINUES THEIR SERIES WITH EDMONTON THROUGH THIS SUNDAY THEN HOSTS YUMA STARTING NEXT TUESDAY. OVERALL THE TEAM IS 32 AND 19. THEY WON THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON IN THE SOUTHERN DIVISION OF THE GOLDEN BASEBALL LEAGUE ARE CURRENTLY IN SECOND SPOT IN THE DIVISION FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP - PJB)

J: THERE’S MAGIC HAPPENING AT THE KAANAPALI BEACH HOTEL, HAWAII' MOST HAWAIIAN HOTEL. PAUL JANES-BROWN VISITED THE LATEST VERSION OF KUPANAHA FOR THIS WEEK’S CURTAIN CALL.

PJB: THE TITLE OF THIS SHOW SUMS IT UP PERFECTLY, KUPANAHA MEANS SURPRISING, STRANGE, WONDERFUL, AMAZING, EXTRAORDINARY, UNACCOUNTABLE, MARVELOUS; AND ASTONISHING! IT’S QUITE A NAME TO LIVE UP TO BUT JODY BARAN AND KATHLEEN POMEROY HAVE BEEN DOING IT HERE ON AND OFF FOR A DECADE. BOTH HAVE BEEN PERFORMING SINCE THEY WERE CHILDREN, SHE AS A DANCER AND HE AS A MAGICIAN AND THEY ARE CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONALS.

BARAN TAKES THE AUDIENCE ON AN HISTORICAL JOURNEY PAYING HOMAGE TO THE GREATEST MAGICIANS OF THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY. ALL OF WHOM, FROM HOUDINI TO LONG TAK SAM PERFORMED ON MAUI. ALONG THE WAY, HE BENDS, FOLDS, MUTILATES, LEVITATES AND SAWS THE VOLUPTUOUS POMEROY AND SHE JUST KEEPS COMING BACK FOR MORE WITH A BEAUTIFUL SMILE AND VEGAS STYLE COSTUMES THAT SHE CHANGES INTO IN A FLASH. THE ARRAY OF HER COSTUMES IS KUPANAHA.

IN ONE ILLUSION, THEY ARE EACH IN LARGE BAGS. SHE IS ALSO IN A CAGE WITH HER HANDS OUT OF THE BAG AND THEY ARE TIED. BARAN IS ON A PLATFORM ACROSS FROM HER AS HE PULLS THE BAG UP TO COVER HIMSELF. INSTANTLY, THE BAG FALLS DOWN TO REVEAL POMEROY AND JODY IS IN THE BAG IN THE CAGE! IT IS KUPANAHA!

BARAN MAKES SEVERAL SUGGESTIVE COMMENTS, BUT THIS IS TRULY A FAMILY SHOW FROM START TO FINISH. IN FACT, BARAN EMPLOYS HIS TWO TEENAGE DAUGHTERS CHRYSTAL AND KATRINA. I ASKED POMEROY WHEN ONE OF THEM WOULD BE TAKING OVER FOR HER AND IN TYPICAL SHOW BUSINESS FASHION SHE TOLD ME, “NEVER!”

THE SHOW IS NON STOP ENTERTAINMENT WHICH LOCALS AS WELL AS TOURISTS WILL FIND KUPANAHA. THE HAWAIIAN TOUCHES HAVE BEEN CHANGED WITH MORE OF POLYNESIA NOW REPRESENTED, HOWEVER THE HULA IS A GOOD AS EVER AND THE PRODUCTION CONTINUES TO CLEVERLY AND UNIQUELY BLEND THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE WITH THE BARAN’S MAGICAL CONTRAPTIONS. INCIDENTALLY, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT BARAN AND THE WORLD FAMOUS ILLUSION DESIGNER ROGER CAPPS HAVE CREATED ALL OF THE ILLUSIONS SEEN IN KUPANAHA.

BARAN CONTINUOUSLY ENTERTAINS WITH A PATTER THAT NEVER SOUNDS PRACTICED. HE SMASHES WATCHES, POURS UNLIMITED AMOUNTS OF SALT FROM NOWHERE, PRODUCES DOVES OUT OF THIN AIR AND IS ABLE TO REVEAL A CARD CHOSEN FROM AN INVISABLE DECK! IT’S ALL KUPANAHA! ONE SEGMENT, WHICH IS PARTICULARLY ENCHANTING IS WHEN HE GETS A GROUP OF CHILDREN FROM THE AUDIENCE ON STAGE AND PROCEEDS TO GET THEM TO DROP COINS INTO A METAL BUCKET WITH INVISIBLE COINS. ALL OF THE CHILDREN GET A BALLOON DOG AND ONE LUCKY ONE GET’S BARAN’S STARTER MAGIC KIT.

BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY YOU WILL GET THE FULL KUPANAHA EFFECT FROM THIS SHOW. FROM THE SLEIGHT OF HAND AND TABLE TOP MAGIC PERFORMED EXPERTLY BY LAURO CASTILLO, TO THE VERY TASTY THREE COURSE MEAL PREPARED BY THE HOTEL’S EXCELLENT BANQUET STAFF TO THE HAWAIIAN VIGNETTES SPRINKLED THROUGHOUT THE SHOW, EVERYTHING WORKS! IT’S KUPANAHA! GO YOU WON’T REGRET IT.

FOR SHOW TIMES, MENU CHOICES, AND OTHER INFORMATION GO TO MAUITVNEWS.COM AND CLICK ON COMING ATTRACTIONS.

THAT’S CURTAIN CALL FOR THIS WEEK, I’M PAUL JANES-BROWN, A HUI HOU AND GO SEE LIVE THEATER. STAY TUNED FOR COMING ATTRACTIONS – UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, RIGHT AFTER THIS.
