(Headlines - VO)

A. J: JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT IT WAS OVER, ANOTHER ROUND IN THE MAUI GAME SHOW "HAGGLING FOR HOUSING" IS ON TAP FOR THE HOTLY CONTESTED HONUA'ULA PROJECT.

JY: IT'S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME FOR MAUI STUDENTS, AND IT'S A MAJOR GROWTH SPURT FOR MAUI SCHOOLS -  WITH ONE BRAND NEW CAMPUS COMPLETE, AND TWO NEW MAJOR PROJECTS ABOUT TO BREAK GROUND.

J: BEAUTIFUL FISH, DISAPPEARING FROM MAUI REEFS...NOT JUST BY THE DOZENS OR EVEN HUNDREDS...BUT BY THE MILLIONS. THE SAD PART? IT'S MOSTLY LEGAL. WE'LL HAVE THE DETAILS FOR YOU.

JY: IN SPORTS, ON THE HEELS OF WINNING THEIR 23RD STRAIGHT MAUI COUNTY TITLE, HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB POWERED THEIR WAY TO THEIR SEVENTH STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AT HANALEI BAY, WHILE TEAM PONO SHOWED THEIR "GOODNESS" ON THE DIAMOND AT MAEHARA STADIUM.

J: AND WHILE THE DELICATE ARTISTRY OF CLASSICAL GUITAR IS FEATURED IN TWO MAUI CONCERTS, IT'S TIME FOR THE THIRD ANNUAL FREE HAWAIIAN MUSIC FESTIVAL ON LANA'I. THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. CYNDI MAYO DAVIS IS ON VACATION. WHILE SUPPORTERS SAY IT'S ANOTHER VICTORY, OPPONENTS SAYS IT'S JUST ANOTHER STALL TACTIC.

(turn to cam)(PiP: honuaula)

JY: NEVERTHELESS, THE DEBATE WILL RAGE ON. THERE WILL BE AT LEAST ONE MORE PUBLIC HEARING OVER THE SOUTH MAUI HOUSING DEVELOPMENT KNOWN AS HONUA'ULA.

(vo) DESPITE SEVERAL PUBLIC MEETINGS, INCLUDING THIS SESSION AT KIHEI COMMUNITY CENTER IN MAY - AND LAST MONTH'S BACK-TO-BACK HEARINGS IN THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL CHAMBERS, THERE WILL BE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC TO SPEAK. COUNCIL MEMBERS JOANNE JOHN JOHNSON AND MICHELLE ANDERSON LISTENED TO MORE THAN TEN HOURS OF TESTIMONY THAT WRAPPED UP LAST WEEK, BUT SAY THERE STILL MAY BE MORE FOR PEOPLE TO SAY.  THE TWO APPEALED TO THE REST OF THE COUNCIL TO SCHEDULE YET ANOTHER ROUND OF PUBLIC TESTIMONY DURING EVENING HOURS, TO ALLOW OPINIONS FROM CITIZENS WHO COULDN'T ATTEND DAYTIME HEARINGS BECAUSE OF WORK SCHEDULES.

(oncam tag)  THAT DUO BECAME A TRIO WHEN COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER MIKE VICTORINO JOINED THE CALL TO ADD ANOTHER ROUND OF TESTIMONY. BY COUNTY LAW, IF THREE COUNCIL MEMBERS REQUEST A PUBLIC HEARING, THE COUNCIL CHAIR MUST AGREE. NO DATE, TIME OR LOCATION HAD BEEN SET AS OUR NEWS DEADLINE, BY COUNCIL CHAIRMAN RIKI HOKAMA. THE HOUSING SUBDIVISION FORMERLY KNOWN AS WAILEA 670, BORDERS MAUI MEADOW TO THE SOUTH AND IS MAUKA OF WAILEA RESORT. THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT WOULD INCLUDE 14-HUNDRED HOUSING UNITS, INCLUDING 700 DESIGNATED AS AFFORDABLE. THE CONTROVERSIAL PROJECT HAS BEEN DEBATED FOR YEARS - PRIMARILY ON THE ISSUES OF WATER, TRAFFIC AND THE IMPACT 14-HUNDRED NEW FAMILIES WOULD HAVE ON TRAFFIC.

(MauiBotulism)(PiP-CattleDrive)

C. J: A WEEK AFTER TWO MAUI MEN WERE TREATED FOR SUSPECTED BOTULISM POISONING FROM EATING A BRAND OF  TAINTED CHILI, THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION SAY THAT BOTULISM WAS NOT FOUND IN THE CANS THEY TESTED.

HANA RESIDENT JOHN STOCKTON SUFFERED MANY OF THE SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTULISM POISONING AFTER EATING CATTLE DRIVE BRAND CHILI HE HAD PURCHASED FROM THE KAHULUI COSTCO. HIS ILLNESS LANDED HIM IN MAUI MEMORIAL FOR THREE DAYS. IN A SEPARATE INCIDENT, KEITH REGAN OF WAILUKU ALSO WENT TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM WITH A SEVERE REACTION AFTER EATING SOME OF THE SAME PRODUCT. HIS SYMPTOMS WERE NOT SEVERE ENOUGH TO WARRANT A FULL BLOOD TEST, BUT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DID TEST THE CONTENTS OF THE CAN FROM WHICH REGAN ATE. NO BOTULISM. STOCKTON HAD ALREADY DISPOSED OF THE CAN HE ATE FROM, SO HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS COULD ONLY TEST FROM ANOTHER CAN OF CHILI FROM HIS CUPBOARD. AGAIN, NO BOTULISM.

HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SPOKESWOMAN JANICE OKUBO ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WHILE STOCKTON - FORTUNATELY - DID NOT CONTRACT BOTULISM POISONING, AT LEAST FOUR OTHER CASES OF BOTULISM ON THE MAINLAND HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED. THE COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURES THE PRODUCT ALSO PRODUCES 86 OTHER LINES OF CANNED MEATS AND FOUR BRANDS OF DOG FOOD. ALL OF THOSE PRODUCTS THAT COSTCO CARRIED ON MAUI HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE SHELVES. FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF THOSE PRODUCTS, PLUS WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED ANY, IS AVAILABLE THOUGH OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Aquarium)(PiP - Aquarium)

D. JY: MOST WOULD LIKELY AGREE THAT PARADISE WOULDN'T BE PARADISE IF THERE WEREN'T VIBRANT REEFS TEEMING WITH COLORFUL FISH AND BREATHTAKING CORAL. FOR MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD WHO WANT A PIECE OF PARADISE IN THEIR HOME OR OFFICE, THERE ARE THOSE WILLING TO SELL IT TO THEM - AND WE ALL PAY THE PRICE. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING HAS MORE ON THIS SAD FISH TALE.

e-Cycling)(PiP e-Cycling)

E. J: AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF HAZARDOUS ELEMENTS IN OUR LANDFILLS IS COMING UP ON MAUI. AND EVEN THE NAME HAS CHANGED TO BETTER REPRESENT THE EFFORT. AN EFFORT THAT RECYCLED 130 TONS OF OBSOLETE COMPUTER GEAR LAST YEAR ALONE.

(vo) FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE COMPUSWAP, IT'S NOW CALLED 'E-CYCLING," AND THE IDEA IS TO KEEP HEAVY METALS AND CHEMICALS FOUND IN COMPUTER CIRCUIT BOARDS AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT OUT OF LANDFILLS. THE SEMI-ANNUAL EVENT IS ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO UPGRADE YOUR OUTDATED COMPUTER WITH SOMETHING NEWER AND FASTER - FOR FREE. BRING YOUR OUTDATED, UNUSED OR NON-FUNCTIONAL COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONIC GEAR TO THE PARKING LOT AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM IN WAILUKU.

(VO-FF-CG) THE FIRST DAY OF THE E-CYCLING EVENT WILL BE FROM NINE TO ONE FRIDAY, AUGUST 24TH. THAT FIRST DAY IS OPEN TO BUSINESSES, SCHOOL AND ORGANIZATIONS ONLY TO DROP OFF ELECTRONIC GEAR. THE FOLLOWING DAY, SATURDAY THE 25TH, THE EVENT IS OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC FROM NINE TO ONE. DURING THAT TIME YOU CAN DROP OFF OUTDATED GEAR, BROWSE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOME EXCEPTIONAL DEALS AND GIVEAWAYS.

(on-cam tag) THE NEW  NAME OF THE EVENT REFLECTS THE FACT THAT ORGANIZERS HAVE EXPANDED BEYOND ACCEPTING JUST COMPUTERS, TO ACCEPTING ALMOST ANYTHING THAT HAS A CIRCUIT BOARD - WHICH IS ALMOST EVERYTHING ELECTRONIC - INCLUDING TELEVISIONS, VCRS, DVD PLAYERS, GAME SYSTEMS, AND EVEN CELL PHONES.  THE SUGGESTED DONATION TO RECYCLE A COMPLETE COMPUTER SYSTEM IS 10 DOLLARS - WHICH GOES TO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY.  IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, OR WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER  FOR THE EVENT, CALL THE E-CYCLING HOTLINE AT 573-4018.

F. JY: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS....BACK TO SCHOOL ON MAUI MEANS A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AT A BRAND NEW CENTRAL MAUI CAMPUS. AND THERE'S EVEN MORE GOOD NEWS FOR TWO OTHER CAMPUSES.

J: AND PREPARING FOR THE UNTHINKABLE. MAUI POLICE RECEIVE TRAINING ON HOW TO RESPOND IF A TRAGEDY LIKE THE ONES AT VIRGINIA TECH AND COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL WERE TO EVER OCCUR ON MAUI. THAT, AND MORE, WHEN WE COME BACK.

(Education-Pomaika'i)(PiP-Pomaika'i)

G. JY: YOU CAN'T REALLY CALL IT "BACK" TO SCHOOL BECAUSE NONE OF THE STUDENTS HAVE EVER BEEN THERE BEFORE. BUT IT IS BACK TO WORK FOR RENE ("reen") YAMAFUJI.  AFTER 10 YEARS AS PRINCIPAL AT KULA SCHOOL, SHE TAKES THE HELM OF MAUI'S NEWEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPUS, POMAIKA'I.

(sot) (RENE YAMAFUJI, Principal -) RF01: "Which means blessing, because this really is a blessing to the Kahului community to have this school - brand new school, air conditioned - which is perfect for this area that can be really windy as well as dusty and hot."

RF02: "We're going to start with about 320 students and we can actually grow to about 650 - 680 students."

THE CAMPUS INCLUDES THREE TWO-STORY OPEN-AIR BUILDINGS WITH SKYLIGHTS AND ENCLOSED, AIR CONDITIONED CLASSROOMS. IN ADDITION TO READING, WRITING AND 'RITHMATIC, THE STUDENTS - AND THE TEACHERS - HAVE MORE NEW THINGS TO LEARN.

RF03: "In fact today, yesterday and the day before we've been teaching the students how to go from one building to another, how to exit the classroom when they need to go to the bathroom - little things like that. Because, since no one has ever been here before, we had to start from 'ground zero."

WHILE READY FOR TEACHING, THERE ARE STILL OFFICE SUPPLIES AND MACHINES - LIKE PHOTOCOPIERS AND FILING CABINETS ON THE WAY. THE CAMPUS WAS ORIGINALLY NAMED MAUI LANI ELEMENTARY, BUT THE NAME WAS CHANGED AND A DEDICATION CEREMONY HELP IN SPRING FOR THE NEW POMAIKAI ELEMENTARY.

LESS THAN A MILE AWAY, MAUI WAENA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL IS ALSO SET FOR AN UPGRADE. LAST WEEK GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE'S OFFICE ANNOUNCED PLANS FOR A NEW 8-POINT-SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR BUILDING FOR THE KAHULUI CAMPUS - TO BE BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE EXISTING BASKETBALL COURT, ADJACENT TO ONEHEE STREET. THE NEW BUILDING WILL BE TWO STORIES TALL AND WILL INCLUDE EIGHT CLASSROOMS, INCLUDING THREE SCIENCE CLASSROOMS, THREE GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS, A MUSIC ROOM AND A COMPUTER RESOURCE CENTER. LAST YEAR THE GOVERNOR RELEASED 623-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR DESIGN OF THE PROJECT. CONSTRUCTION IS SET TO BEGIN IN MARCH OF 2008 WITH FINAL COMPLETION SET FOR JUNE, 2009.

AND ONE OF MAUI'S HISTORIC EDUCATION SITES - BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL - WILL ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S LATEST FUND RELEASE. A NEW NINE-AND-A-HALF MILLION DOLLAR LIBRARY WILL BREAK GROUND IN DECEMBER OF THIS YEAR. THE NEW FACILITY WILL NOT ONLY RESTORE TWO CLASSROOMS FOR USE AT BALDWIN, IT WILL EXPAND SEVERAL OTHER CAPABILITIES.

(sot) (Sande Trenholme, Librarian, Baldwin HS) ST01: "We're in 35-hundred square feet right now and the new library will be 13,700 square feet. It's going to be a library/media center. We'll have the computer lab in there. We'll have a video production room. And we'll have a teacher's production room as well as a conference room."

THE NEW BUILDING WILL BE BUILT NEXT TO THE EXISTING BAND ROOM AT BALDWIN. AND WHILE SOME OF THE PALM TREES WILL HAVE TO COME OUT, THE FAMOUS BALDWIN BANYANS WILL REMAIN INTACT.

(on-cam tag) IN TOTAL, FUNDING FOR THE TWO MAUI PROJECTS TOTALS 18 MILLION, 225-THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND ARE PLANNED - IN PART - TO MEET THE ANTICIPATED DEMAND OF RISING STUDENT POPULATIONS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAUI LANI SUBDIVISION IN CENTRAL MAUI.

(MPD Training) (PiP) (Maui PD emblem)

Sgt. Mark Joaquin, use of Force trainer, MPD

H. J: HOPING - PERHAPS EVEN PRAYING - THAT NOTHING LIKE IT EVER HAPPENS IN MAUI COUNTY, THE MAUI POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS JUST COMPLETED TRAINING FOR ITS OFFICERS ON WHAT TO DO IF THERE EVER WERE A SHOOTING RAMPAGE ON A MAUI SCHOOL CAMPUS OR WORKPLACE.

(VO) REMINDERS OF THE NATION'S WORST TRAGEDIES ARE AS CLOSE AS THE INTERNET. WHILE CHAOS IS OFTEN THE EARLY SCENARIO, OFFICIALS BELIEVE THAT - WITH PROPER TRAINING - THERE IS A WAY TO QUICKLY ADDRESS SUCH A HORRIFIC SCENE.

MJ01: "This type of incident is not what you would call 'normal.' Police officers don't normally have to respond to a situation where a person is committing homicide, and it's in progress, and it's not done before we get there. Although we all had the skill sets to do it, and that's from recruit training, this put us all together, practicing together for this situation - a unique type of situation, if you will."

WOULD FIRST RESPONDERS TO A SCENE LIKE THIS DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THEY'RE TRAINED TO DO NOW?

MJ02: "It's not necessarily different, It's more refined, if you will - what we can do - our actions can save a lot of lives if we do things a particular way or follow a particular game plan."

THE FIELD TRAINING TOOK PLACE LAST MONTH AT A CENTRAL MAUI CAMPUS. SERGEANT JOAQUIN TOLD MAUI TV NEWS THAT THERE ISN'T ANY NEW OR SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR THE NEW SKILLS OFFICERS HAVE LEARNED, NOR WILL THERE BE ANY NEW SPECIALIZED RESPONSE UNIT FORMED WITHIN THE COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT. WHILE IT MAY BE A SAD COMMENTARY THAT SUCH TRAINING SHOULD EVER BECOME NECESSARY IN THE FIRST PLACE, IT HAS TO ADD A LITTLE PEACE OF MIND TO PARENTS OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS OF A CHILD IN SCHOOL.

(fire)(PiP-Fire)

I. JY: FIRE FIGHTERS AND MOTORISTS GOT A BIT OF A SCARE LAST FRIDAY WHEN BRUSH FIRES ERUPTED ALONG TWO MAUI HIGHWAYS.

(vo) JUST BEFORE THREE P.M., A BRUSH FIRE WAS REPORTED NEAR THE SCENIC LOOK AT PAPAWAI POINT ALONG HONOAPI'ILANI HIGHWAY - SLOWING TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS WHILE FIRE CREWS RESPONDED. TWO ENGINE COMPANIES AND TWO TANKERS DESCENDED ON THE BLAZE, KNOCKING IT OUT IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES.

(ON-CAM) LESS THAN AN HOUR LATER, ANOTHER SMALL BLAZE ERUPTED - THIS TIME NEAR THE HUMANE SOCIETY ALONG MOKULELE HIGHWAY. FIRE CREWS WERE JUST AS QUICK AND HAD THE FIRE OUT IN LESS THAN TEN MINUTES. THERE WERE NO DAMAGES OR INJURIES REPORTED FROM EITHER INCIDENT.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

J. J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS, KALAPANA DOES THE MATH...BUT NO MATTER HOW YOU ADD IT UP, IT WAS A HUGE WIN FOR HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS OF OUTRIGGER CANOE RACING. KALAPANA WILL HAVE HIGHLIGHTS UP NEXT.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK AFTER THAT WITH THE RUNDOWN OF COMING ATTRACTIONS, INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE VERY GOOD REASON TO TAKE THE FERRY ACROSS TO THE PINEAPPLE ISLAND!

J: AND A LITTLE LATER ON MAUI TV NEWS, WE'LL TAKE TO OLD HOME WEEK... TO THE FIFTH ANNUAL MAUI SUGAR PLANTATION FESTIVAL IN PU'UNENE.  THAT AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK. STAY WITH US.

(Sports!)

K. K. (on-cam) HELP ME WITH THE MATH HERE...23 PLUS 31 EQUALS…SEVEN! ALOHA EVERYONE, WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

THE WOMEN AND MEN OF HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB ARE BASKING IN THE GLORY OF THEIR SEVENTH STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN OUTRIGGER CANOE RACING. THE MAUI HUI WITH THE BLUE CANOES TOOK THE TOP SPOT AT THE HAWAIIAN CANOE RACING ASSOCIATION MEET AT HANALEI BAY ON KAUAI LAST SATURDAY - DESPITE BEING PICKED AS UNDERDOGS GOING IN TO THE STATE FINALS.

HAWAIIAN CANOE CLUB WON IT'S 23RD STRAIGHT MAUI COUNTY HAWAIIAN CANOE ASSOCIATION TITLE JUST TWO WEEKS AGO. THEY TOOK 31 CREWS TO THE STATE FINALS WHERE THEY WERE PICKED TO FALL BEHIND OAHU POWERHOUSE LANIKAI, A TEAM THAT BROUGHT 38 CREWS TO STATES. OAHU'S KAILUA CANOE CLUB ALSO HAD MORE CREWS...36 IN FACT. BUT IT WAS MAUI'S HAWAIIAN CREWS THAT PREVAILED...AND THEN SOME!

(VO-FF) THE NUMBERS WERE BIG ON KAUAI. MORE THAN 3,OOO PADDLERS CONVERGED ON THE SHORES OF HANALEI TO TAKE HOME THIS. AND IT WAS HAWAIIAN HEAD COACH DIANE HO WHO GETS TO KEEP THE NOW-COVETED MICHAEL TONGG AWARD. HAWAIIAN IS THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE AWARD, WHICH WAS GIVEN IN HONOR OF TONG, WHO DIED JUST LAST MONTH AFTER SERVING FOR 20 YEARS AS PRESIDENT OF THE HAWAIIAN CANOE RACING ASSOCIATION.

THANKS TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, THE HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN AND THE HONOLULU ADVERTISER FOR THESE IMAGES FROM THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. IN ALL, HAWAIIAN TOOK HOME TWENTY-ONE MEDALS, INCLUDING SEVEN GOLDS FOR FIRST PLACE FINISHES ACROSS THE DAY, INCLUDING THE GRUELING SHOWCASE MILE-AND-A-HALF MEN'S OPEN RACE.

HAWAIIAN NOW HOLD THE SECOND-LONGEST WINNING STREAK IN STATE HISTORY WITH SEVEN IN A ROW. OAHU'S OUTRIGGER STILL HOLDS THE BRAGGING RIGHTS WITH NINE STRAIGHT FROM 1984 TO 1992.

IN ALL, HERE'S HOW MAUI COUNTY CREWS FARED. HAWAIIAN WON THE OVERALL TITLE WITH 359 POINTS.  IN TRIPLE-A, KIHEI CANOE CLUB WAS THIRD OVERALL WITH 138 POINTS, WHILE KAHANA WAS CLOSE BEHIND TOTALING 131 POINTS ON THE DAY. IN THE DOUBLE-A DIVISION, MOLOKAI'S WA'AKAPAEMUA TOOK FOURTH OVERALL WITH 99 POINTS - TOPPED OFF BY A FIRST-PLACE FINISH IN THE GIRLS 13 RACE. LAE ULA O KAI CAME IN SIXTH IN DOUBLE-A WITH 85 POINTS. IN THE A-DIVISION, KUKUI O MOLOKAI FINISHED SEVENTH WITH 30 POINTS. WAILEA AND NAPILI CAME IN NINTH AND TENTH, RESPECTIVELY AND HANA AND NA KAI EWALU CAME IN 13TH AND 14TH IN THE DIVISION..

(on-cam) E HO'OMAIKA'I TO ALL THE CREWS FROM MAUI COUNTY FOR MANY JOBS - EXTREMELY WELL DONE!

WHILE THE CLOUDS OF CONTROVERSY SIT OVER BARRY BONDS, THE FORECAST IS FOR CLEAR SKIES THIS WINTER AS AT LEAST SIX HAWAII WINTER BASEBALL LEAGUE GAMES WILL BE PLAYED ON MAUI. FOUR OAHU TEAMS ARE SET TO PLAY AT MAEHARA STADIUM  THE FIRST WEEK IN OCTOBER. THE HAWAII WINTER BASEBALL LEAGUE IS A PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE WHERE THE MAJORS SEND PROSPECTS WHO AREN'T QUITE READY FOR THE PROS FARM TEAM SYSTEM.

(vo) MEANWHILE, MAEHARA HAS BEEN GETTING A GOOD WORKOUT TO KEEP THE FIELD IN SHAPE. THE MAUI OPEN LEAGUE PLAYOFFS WRAPPED UP THIS WEEK AT THE WAILUKU STADIUM. TEAM PONO, SEEN HERE IN BLUE AGAINST "WE'RE BACK" IN LAST THURSDAY NIGHT'S SEMI-FINAL PLAYOFF GAME, WENT ON TO FACE FW FOR THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY. THE FINAL SCORE IN THAT ONE WAS EIGHT TO FIVE IN FAVOR OF TEAM PONO.

(on cam) AND NOW THAT SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION, MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE SPORTS WILL ALSO BE BACK IN FULL SWING SOON.  M-I-L BOWLING GETS ROLLING ON AUGUST 22ND, AND THE FIRST FOOTBALL GAME OF THE YEAR IS A NON-CONFERENCE GAME BETWEEN MAUI HIGH AND CALIFORNIA'S SOUTHEAST HIGH AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM ON AUGUST 23RD.
