(Headlines - VO)

A. J: IT'S BACK TO SCHOOL LIKE NEVER BEFORE FOR DOZENS OF MAUI STUDENTS. AND THEIR FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES DREW INTEREST FROM THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN HAWAII.

JY: KEEPING OUR EYES ON THE SKIES AND THE SEAS...HOW THE INTERNET IS HELPING YOU PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY.

J: COMPARED TO 'OAHU, THEY'RE COMPARATIVELY RARE, BUT BOX JELLYFISH MAKE THEMSELVES KNOWN IN A MOST UNPLEASANT WAY ONCE EACH MONTH ALONG MAUI BEACHES.

JY: IN SPORTS, THE WAVES WERE SMALL, THE BOARDS WERE LONG AND COMPETITION WAS FUN AT THE 14TH ANNUAL OLE LONGBOARD CLASSIC...WHILE THE LONG-DISTANCE CANOE RACING SEASON GOT STARTED THIS WEEK.

J: AND, JULIE Y HAS THE DETAILS ABOUT AN AWARD-WINNING KUMU HULA WHO HAS ADDED MEA MELE TO HER TITLE. DETAILS ON HER DEBUT PERFORMANCE AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. CYNDI MAYO DAVIS IS ON VACATION. SCIENCE. TECHNOLOGY. ENGINEERING. MATH. HOW MANY OF THOSE DID YOU MASTER IN MIDDLE SCHOOL?

(turn to cam)(PiP: STEM)

JY: WITH TECHNOLOGY ADVANCING SO RAPIDLY THESE DAYS, IT ONLY MAKES SENSE TO TRY TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE "WAYS OF TOMORROW" SOONER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WAS THERE FOR THE OPENING OF "JUNIOR HIGH-HIGH TECH STYLE."

(Take STEM pkg)

(on cam tag)

JY: YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT THE STEM PROGRAM - AND ABOUT KIHEI CHARTER SCHOOL BY VISITING THEIR WEBSITE. FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(PiP-Flossie)

C. J: ALL EYES WERE ON THE SKIES AS METEOROLOGISTS, TV WEATHERMEN, AND JUST ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE KEPT WATCH THIS WEEK ON TROPICAL SYSTEM NINE-E, KNOWN - FOR AT LEAST A WHILE - AS HURRICANE FLOSSIE.

(vo) ON THE HEELS OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION COSME JUST TWO WEEKS BEFORE, HURRICANE FLOSSIE FIRST APPEARED IN CLOSE-UP VISIBLE RADAR THIS PAST MONDAY. THE STORM, RAMPED UP TO A CATEGORY FOUR AS 25-FOOT SURF AND 125-MILE-AN-HOUR WINDS WERE FORECAST FOR THE BIG ISLAND. AS THE STORM MOVED TO THE NORTHWEST, HOWEVER, COOLER WATER WEAKENED THE SYSTEM AND THE EYE-WALL DISAPPEARED. BY WEDNESDAY MORNING, THE SYSTEM BARELY GLANCED OFF THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE BIG ISLAND, AND ONLY A TROPICAL SYSTEM REMAINED - MOVING HARMLESSLY OFF TO THE WEST.

Preparedness)(PiP - Flossie)

D. JY: IF THERE WERE A DIRECT HIT BY A HURRICANE - AND EXPERTS SAY IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME - WOULD YOU BE PREPARED? THE CENTRAL PACIFIC HURRICANE SEASON LASTS THROUGH NOVEMBER...BUT THERE IS NO SEASON BEGINNING OR END FOR A TSUNAMI. A NEW TOOL PROVIDED BY THE NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION NOW MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO USE THE INTERNET TO LOCATE WHERE HAWAII'S TSUNAMI EVACUATION ZONES ARE LOCATED.

(VO) PEOPLE CAN STILL LOOK IN THE PHONE BOOK FOR MAPS, BUT THE NEW TOOL - WHICH MERGES GOOGLE MAPS TECHNOLOGY WITH NOAA ("noah") INFORMATION, ALLOWS PEOPLE TO TYPE IN AN EXACT ADDRESS TO SEE IF IT IS WITHIN A TSUNAMI INUNDATION ZONE OR NOT. MAUI COUNTY'S MOST POPULATED AREAS ARE CLEARLY OUTLINED IN THESE LARGER VIEWS, BUT YOU CAN ZOOM IN TO EXACT STREET LOCATIONS. THE WEB SITE ALSO HAS LINKS TO EMERGENCY INFORMATION, INCLUDING HOW YOU CAN BE BEST PREPARED - AS WELL AS WHERE TO GO IF AN EVACUATION BECOMES NECESSARY. TO ACCESS THE WEB SITE, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Council Salaries)(PiP-County Council)

E. J: SAYING THAT THEY ARE NOT FAIRLY COMPENSATED FOR THE WORK THEY DO, A COMMISSION OF SIX CITIZENS GAVE THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL A 26 PERCENT RAISE THIS WEEK...RETROACTIVE TO JULY FIRST.

(vo) COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL SEE THEIR W-2s JUMP FROM 52 THOUSAND 500 DOLLARS TO 66 THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED. COUNCIL CHAIRMAN RIKI HOKAMA'S GROSS JUMPS FROM 57-FIVE TO 71 THOUSAND, 500 DOLLARS. THE JUSTIFICATION? ONCE CONSIDERED A PART-TIME JOB, A MEMBER OF THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL PUTS IN MUCH MORE THAN 40 HOURS A WEEK DEFENDING THE COUNTY CHARTER AND PLOTTING THE FUTURE OF MAUI COUNTY.

(on-cam) THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL IS ALREADY THE HIGHEST-PAID GROUP OF ITS KIND IN HAWAII - WITH SALARIES NEARLY DOUBLE OF WHAT THEIR CONTEMPORARIES MAKE ON KAUAI. AND, ACCORDING TO THE LATEST CENSUS NUMBERS ON MAUI, THE AVERAGE INCOME FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WORKER ON MAUI IS JUST OVER 28 THOUSAND, 800 DOLLARS A YEAR.

(jellyfish)(PiP - Box Jellies)

F. JY: TECHNICALLY, THEY'RE NOT CONSIDERED AN INVASIVE SPECIES BECAUSE THEY ARRIVED HERE ON THEIR OWN. BUT "INVADE" THEY DO AFTER THE FULL MOON EACH MONTH, BUT IN NUMBERS ONLY A SMALL FRACTION AS MANY AS ALONG THE BEACHES OF O'AHU. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING TRIED TO FIND OUT WHY.

(Take Jellyfish pkg)

(On-cam tag) THERE ARE MORE THAN 200 SPECIES OF JELLYFISH - WHICH ISN'T REALLY A FISH AT ALL. THEY ALSO HAVE NO BRAINS, HEARTS, GILLS, BONES OR BLOOD. BUT, AS A LOT OF US HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY . THEY DO HAVE STINGING TENTACLES. THE SMALLEST ARE ALMOST MICROSCOPIC, AND THE LARGEST CAN REACH EIGHT FEET ACROSS AND HAVE TENTACLES STRETCHING OUT UP TO 200 FEET.

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

G. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...IT'S A DATE. THE MAIDEN OFFICIAL VOYAGE OF THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY IS COMING SOON. WE'LL HAVE DETAILS NEXT.

JY: AND WE'LL TAKE YOU TO ONE OF MAUI'S MOST SUCCESSFUL FUND-RAISERS TO SEE WHY FOLKS WERE KICKIN' UP THEIR HEELS AT "MAUI CALLS."

J: AND IF YOU BLINKED, SLEPT THROUGH IT, OR OTHERWISE MISSED THIS WEEKEND'S METEOR SHOWER, FEAR NOT...THERE'S AN EVEN BIGGER HEAVENLY EVENT COMING UP LATER THIS MONTH. THAT STORY AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(break)

(b block)

(SUPERFERRY) (PiP-SUPERFERRY)

H. JY: IT TOOK NEARLY TWO EXTRA MONTHS TO WORK OUT A FEW BUGS AND MAKE SURE THE PORTS WERE READY, BUT THE LONG-ANTICIPATED FIRST DAY OF SERVICE HAS BEEN SET FOR THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY.

(vo) THE ALAKAI, SEEN HERE MAKING IT'S VERY FIRST ARRIVAL TO KAHULUI HARBOR LAST MONTH FOR TRIAL RUNS, WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PASSENGER AND VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION BEGINNING TUESDAY, AUGUST 28TH, SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OVER THE WEEKEND - AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TAKING RESERVATIONS.

(FF-CG-VO) DAILY ROUNDTRIP SERVICE BETWEEN OAHU AND MAUI LEAVES HONOLULU AT 6:30 A.M., ARRIVING AT KAHULUI HARBOR AROUND 9:30 A.M. THE KAHULUI-TO-O'AHU RUN LEAVES AT 11 A.M., ARRIVING IN HONOLULU AROUND 2 P.M. THERE IS ALSO ROUNDTRIP SERVICE BETWEEN OAHU AND KAUAI SIX DAYS A WEEK.

(on-cam) A SECOND DAILY ROUNDTRIP BETWEEN MAUI AND OAHU IS PLANNED WHEN A SECOND SHIP IS ADDED TO THE SUPERFERRY SCHEDULE IN 2009. THE 340-FOOT ALUMINUM CATAMARAN WILL BE IN KAHULUI HARBOR THIS SATURDAY. THE FIRST CHANCE FOR MAUI RESIDENTS TO GET A PEEK INSIDE ALAKAI QUICKLY FILLED UP. BUT WE'LL GIVE YOU A LOOK INSIDE ON OUR COMPLETE TOUR OF THE ALAKAI, NEXT WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(Maui Calls) (PiP - Maui Calls)

I. J: IT'S AN ANNUAL EVENT WHERE THE ELITE MEET TO EAT, GREET…AND SPEND! AND ALL OF MAUI COUNTY REAPS THE REWARDS. OUR OWN JULIE Y WAS THERE TO ANSWER WHEN "MAUI CALLS."

(take Maui Calls pkg)

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'RE AMONG THOSE WHO PLAN AHEAD, NEXT YEAR'S EVENT IS TENTATIVELY SET FOR 08-08-08. THE MAUI ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER IS HOME TO MORE THAN 17-HUNDRED EVENTS A YEAR ATTENDED BY MORE THAN A QUARTER-MILLION PEOPLE.

(Honua'ula)(PiP-Honua'ula)

J. JY: THE LATEST ROUND IN THE DEBATE OVER HONUA'ULA IN SOUTH MAUI MAINLY FOCUSED ON ROUNDS - OF GOLF. THE HOTLY CONTESTED 670-ACRE SITE MAUKA OF WAILEA WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED WITH TWO GOLF COURSES - ONE PUBLIC AND ONE PRIVATE. COUNTY COUNCIL DEMANDS AND CONDITIONS KNOCKED THAT BACK TO ONE GOLF COURSE. LAST WEEK, THAT CONDITION WAS STRENGTHENED EVEN MORE WHEN COUNCIL MEMBERS SAID THE COURSE COULD NOT BE EXCLUSIVE TO HONUA'ULA RESIDENTS ONLY.

OWNERS REPRESENTATIVE CHARLIE JENCKS TOLD THE COUNCIL LATE LAST WEEK THAT A PRIVATE GOLF COURSE WOULD MAKE MARKET-PRICE HOME BUYERS MORE INTERESTED IN HONA'ULA, AND WOULD HELP THE DEVELOPERS MAKE BACK SOME OF THE MONEY THEY EXPECT TO LOSE BY BUILDING A LOT MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING THAN THEY HAD ORIGINALLY PLANNED.

THE COUNCIL DID NOT REACH A FINAL VOTE ON THIS ISSUE, BUT THEY DID CLEAR ONE HURDLE. THEY DEMANDED - AND JENCKS AGREED - THAT ANY GOLF COURSE BUILT WOULD BE IRRIGATED WITH RECYCLED WATER. HEARINGS CONTINUED ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15TH, BUT WILL NOT CONTINUE ON THE 17TH. THE COUNCIL WILL BE OFF THAT DAY - AS WILL ALL STATE EMPLOYEES - IN OBSERVANCE OF HAWAII ADMISSIONS DAY - WHICH IS OBSERVED EACH YEAR ON THE THIRD FRIDAY IN AUGUST, MARKING THE DAY THAT HAWAII BECAME THE 50TH STATE ON AUGUST 21ST, 1959.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

K. J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS...WITH SHORT-COURSE VICTORIES BEHIND THEM, MAUI CANOE CLUBS LAUNCH THE LONG-DISTANCE REGATTA SEASON. AND IT WAS OLO BOARDS AT THE OLE CLASSIC AT LAUNIOPOKO. KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK RIGHT AFTER THAT WITH THE RUNDOWN OF UPCOMING FUN THINGS TO DO AROUND MAUI COUNTY - INCLUDING THE CHANCE TO BE AMONG THE FIRST TO HEAR THE SWEET SOUNDS FROM THE DEBUT MUSIC RELEASE BY AN AWARD-WINNING MAUI KUMU HULA.

J: AND A LITTLE LATER, YOU MAY HAVE MISSED THE METEOR SHOWER LAST WEEKEND, BUT IT WILL HARD TO MISS A MAJOR CELESTIAL EVENT HAPPENING OVER MAUI LATER THIS MONTH DETAILS COMING UP ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(break)

(C-Block)

(SPORTS!) (PiP - SPORTS!)

L. K: THAT WAS GREAT FOR A WARM-UP...NOW LET THE REAL RACING BEGIN! ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

AFTER A RECORD-SETTING SEASON WINNING THEIR 23RD STRAIGHT MAUI COUNTY HAWAIIAN CANOE ASSOCIATION, THEN THEIR SEVENTH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE IN THE HAWAIIAN CANOE RACING ASSOCIATION REGATTA ON KAUAI, YOU'D THINK THE KOA PADDLES AT HAWAIIAN WOULD GO ON THE WALL RACK FOR A WHILE. NOT A CHANCE IN FACT, THEY'RE JUST GETTING STARTED.

(vo) THE LONG-DISTANCE PADDLING SEASON KICKED OFF LAST SATURDAY AT LAUNIOPOKO BEACH WITH THE 17TH ANNUAL DUTCHY KINO MEMORIAL MAUI LONG DISTANCE CLASSIC. MORE THAN TWO DOZEN CANOES HEADED FOR MA'ALAEA AFTER THE 7 A.M. START IN THE WOMEN'S DIVISION. THE SCENES WERE BREATH-TAKING AS THE CANOES HEADED SOUTH ALONG THE COASTLINE IN THE TEN-MILE RACE. WHILE SEVERAL BOATS COMPETED IN THE "IRON" DIVISION - MEANING A SINGLE CREW OF SIX ENDURED THE ENTIRE RACE, SEVERAL CANOES HAD NINE-WOMAN TEAMS, MAKING CHANGES OF THREE CREW MEMBERS EVER FEW MILES. FAMILY, FRIENDS, TEAMMATES AND PHOTOGRAPHERS LINED THE CLIFFS TO TAKE IN THE AMAZING - AND UNIQUELY HAWAIIAN - SIGHTS. THE WOMEN'S RACE ENDED AROUND 10 A.M. WITH _____________ TAKING FIRST PLACE AND THE LADIES OF _______________________ COMING IN SECOND.

THE RACE WAS NAMED AFTER DUTCHY KINO - SEEN HERE IN A CLASSIC 1952 PHOTOGRAPH REATTACHING A LOOSE AMA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE KAIWI CHANNEL WITH TEAMMATE GEORGE DOWNING DURING THE FIRST-EVER MOLOKA'I HO'E. AND IN CASE YOU WONDER - "HOW ROUGH COULD IT GET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHANNEL?" CHECK OUT THIS SCENE OF THE KIHEI CANOE CLUB TEAM FROM THE 2003 MOLOKAI HO'E.

(on-cam) WHILE THE WOMEN WERE CATCHING THEIR BREATH, THE MEN HOPPED INTO THE CANOES FOR THE RACE BACK TO LAHAINA. THE SECOND LEG OF THE DUTCHY KINO CLASSIC, 18 MILES FROM MA'ALAEA HARBOR TO HANAKA'OO BEACH, WAS WON BY ___________________. SECOND PLACE WENT TO ____________________. THERE ARE EIGHT RACES IN THE LONG-DISTANCE SEASON, HELD UNDER A VARIETY OF OPEN OCEAN CONDITIONS, ACROSS HAWAII - AS WELL AS ONE IN CALIFORNIA. IT ALL LEADS UP TO THE WORLD SERIES OF CANOE RACING, NA WAHINA O KE KAI FROM MOLOKAI TO OAHU ON SEPTEMBER 23RD, AND THE GRANDDADDY OF THEM ALL, THE MOLOKA'I HO'E ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER SEVENTH.

AT JUST ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS THE LADIES WERE HEADING SOUTH, LAUNIOPOKO WAS ALSO THE HAPPENING SPOT FOR SURFING..."OLO STYLE."

(vo) IT WAS THE 14TH ANNUAL OLE LONGBOARD CLASSIC THAT ATTRACTED NEARLY 200 COMPETITORS IN 12 SEPARATE DIVISIONS. THE CONDITIONS WERE IDEAL FOR LONG BOARDS...WITH SMALL WAVES AND - IN SOME CASES - ALMOST NO WAVES. BUT THAT WASN'T GOING TO STAND IN THE WAY OF THESE COMPETITORS IN THE BOYS 11-AND-12 DIVISION. NOSE RIDES, SMOOTH CUTBACKS AND - WHATEVER YOU CALL THIS - WERE ALL UNDER THE CAREFUL SCRUTINY OF THE JUDGES, SCORING ON A SCALE OF ONE TO 10 ON A MAXIMUM OF SEVEN WAVES.

MY FAVORITE SURFER OF THE DAY WAS LITTLE HI'ILEI ANIBAN. WATCH WHAT THIS LITTLE GIRL CAN DO. IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR FOURTH PLACE IN HER HEAT IN THE MENEHUNE DIVISION.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE OVERALL WINNER, 17-YEAR-OLD HANS VANDERVOORT, WHO TOOK THE OPEN MEN'S DIVISION. IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL WIN FOR THE KING KEKAULIKE SENIOR, WINNING THE EVENT A YEAR AFTER THE DEATH HIS FATHER, CHRIS VANDERVOORT - HIMSELF A TWO-TIME CHAMPION AT THE OLD LONGBOARD CLASSIC.

(on cam) THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. REMEMBER, IF YOUR TEAM HAS A SPORTING EVENT OR SEASON COMING UP, BE SURE TO DROP US A LINE AT SPORTS-AT-MAUITVNEWS.COM. LET US KNOW ABOUT YOUR GAME AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND WE'LL SEE IF WE CAN'T GET A FILM CREW OUT TO COVER YOUR EVENT. I'LL BE BACK WITH YOU NEXT WEEK. I HOPE TO SEE YOU THEN. (mETEORS-Eclipse)(PiP-Perseids)

N. J: AND FINALLY THIS WEEK, AS METEOR SHOWERS GO, IT WAS THE BIGGEST OF THE YEAR. THE ANNUAL PERSEID METEOR SHOWER - AHEAD OF THE CLOUD BANDS OF HURRICANE FLOSSIE - STREAKED THE NIGHT SKY LATE SUNDAY INTO EARLY MONDAY, BRINGING AS MANY AS 100 SHOOTING STARS PER HOUR TO THOSE WHO STAYED UP AND HAD A GOOD SEAT AWAY FROM CITY LIGHTS AND CLOUDS. BUT - AS THE POPULAR SONG SAID - YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN YET.

(V0) A TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE WILL GRACE THE NIGHT SKY OVER MAUI BEGINNING JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 27TH. THE ACTUAL ECLIPSE WILL BEGIN AT 9:53 P.M. AND LAST UNTIL 3:21 THE NEXT MORNING - BUT THE MOON WILL BE IN THE UMBRAL OR TOTAL ECLIPSE STAGE FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF, FROM JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT UNTIL 1:22 A.M. THIS ANIMATION, CREATED BY SHADOW-AND-SUBSTANCE-DOT-COM, DEMONSTRATES THE BLOOD-RED COLOR THE MOON WILL ASSUME WHEN IT IS TOTALLY BLOCKED FROM THE SUN'S LIGHT BY THE EARTH'S SHADOW. INCIDENTALLY, ACCORDING TO MAUI ASTRONOMY EXPERT ROB RATKOWSKI, IF YOU HAD A TELECOPE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO SEE IT...WHEN THE MOON RISES THAT NIGHT, THE SHADOW OF HALEAKALA WOULD BE VISIBLE ON ITS SURFACE.

(FF-CG-VO) THIS IS THE SECOND LUNAR ECLIPSE OF THE YEAR...THE FIRST ONE, OCCURRING THIS PAST MARCH, WAS NOT VISIBLE IN HAWAII. THIS TIME, ON THE OTHER HAND, WHILE MOST OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA, ALONG WITH THE FAR EAST, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND WILL HAVE A GOOD VIEW, THE BEST SEATS ON THE PLANET - ON LAND ANYWAY - WILL BE IN FRENCH POLYNESIA, WITH HAWAII A VERY CLOSE SECOND. THE ECLIPSE WILL NOT BE VISIBLE AT ALL IN EUROPE, AFRICA OR WESTERN ASIA.

O. (TWO-SHOT)(on-cam) THE PLANET'S NEXT MAJOR CELESTIAL EVENT WILL BE A PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE NEXT MONTH - BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO HEAD TO EASTERN SOUTH AMERICA TO CATCH THAT.

JY: THAT'S IT FOR THIS WEEK'S SHOW. THANKS FOR WATCHING. AND BE SURE TO VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM FOR STORY LINKS, ARCHIVED EDITIONS OF MAUI TV NEWS, AND WAYS TO LET US KNOW WHAT STORIES YOU'D LIKE US TO COVER. UNTIL NEXT WEEK, ALOHA.

J: ALOHA.
