J: AND WHETHER YOU'RE IN THE MOOD FOR A "MOMENT OF THE HEART" OR A "BARK IN DA PARK" HOLLY CHUNG HAS THE DETAILS ON THOSE TWO EVENTS AND MUCH MORE IN COMING ATTRACTIONS THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open (TWO SHOT)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE, AND THANKS FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK FOR MAUI TV NEWS, MAUI'S ONLY INTERNET AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST. I'M JEFF KING.

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. FOOD SECURITY. ENERGY SECURITY. SELF-SUFFICIENCY. FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS THAT WAS THE WAY OF LIFE ON MAUI.

(Turn to cam) BUT SO-CALLED MODERN TIMES HAVE MADE MAUI - AND ALL OF HAWAII - EXTREMELY DEPENDENT ON OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR THOSE CRUCIAL ELEMENTS OF LIFE. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING ATTENDED A FIRST-OF IT'S KIND EVENT ON MAUI THIS WEEKEND THAT EXPLORED 21ST CENTURY SOLUTIONS TO AGE-OLD PROBLEMS.

(Take ISLExpo Pkg) A CONFERENCE, WORKSHOP, PANEL DISCUSSION, SYMPOSIUM OR LECTURE OFTEN ISN'T VERY EXCITING TO WATCH - EXPECT FOR THOSE ATTENDING - AND THEY WERE ENTHRALLED. BUT THIS PARTICULAR EVENT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH LISTENING IN. THE FIRST EVER ISLAND SUSTAINABLE LIVING EXPO AT MAUI COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAD A PURPOSE AND THAT PURPOSE IS HOW ARE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES IN THE FUTURE.

Alex de Roode, Exec Dir, SLIM

AD02: "The purpose of the expo is to raise awareness in some of what we feel are some of the most critical sustainability issues that we need to address and become more familiar with."///

THE TERM "SUSTAINABILITY" HAS BEEN USED SO MUCH LATELY THAT IT'S LOST SOME OF IT'S IMPACT. BUT THE REALITY IS THAT - WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT MEETING OUR FUTURE NEEDS, WE'LL JUST CONTINUE TO USE UP OUR ISLAND RESOURCES AND LEAVE NOTHING FOR OUR CHILDREN.

THE SUSTAINABLE LIVING INSTITUTE OF MAUI WAS FORMED IN A PUBLIC PRIVATE EFFORT AMONG MAUI COMMUNITY COLLEGE, MAUI LAND AND PINEAPPLE, EARTH UNIVERISTY AND THE ROAYAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF SWEDEN. SATURDAY THEY ASSEMBLED A VERY IMPRESSIVE ARRAY OF EXPERTS IN FARMING, TRANSPORTATION, LAND MANAGEMENT, ENERGY AND GOVERNMENT - AND BRAINSTORMED ON WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO MAKE US MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT - MUCH LIKE MAUI WAS FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE WESTERNERS ARRIVED WITH THE CONVENIENCES TO WHICH WE HAVE SINCE BECOME ADDICTED.

AD01: "There are definitely lessons we can learn from the past. Traditional forms of agriculture, resource management - even in terms of organizing society are crucial in allowing us to be sustainable today. So I don't think we're going to back to exactly how it was in ancient times but we definitely have a lot to learn and that we can use to make that happen and make a sustainable future for us here on our island."

THE EXHIBITS PART OF THE EXPO SHOWED WHAT LOCAL FOLKS ARE DOING TO REDUCE THE EVER-INCREASING DEPLETION OF RESOURCES. SEABURY HALL'S ELECTRIC CAR WAS PART OF AN ECLECTIC FLEET OF FUTURE ENERGY FRIENDLY VEHICLES - INCLUDING A MOPED WHOSE MO USES NO GAS. THE IDEA: GREEN LIVING ISN'T JUST POSSIBLE, BUT BEAUTIFUL.

AND SPEAKING OF LIFE ON A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND, LOOKING AHEAD, AS PEOPLE COME HERE AND AREAS OF THE ISLAND ARE DEVELOPED TO ACCOMODATE GROWING POPULATIONS - LAND MUST BE AVAILABLE TO GROW THE SUSTAINABLE CROPS THAT WILL SUSTAIN US. THOSE DECISIONS, ONE EX[PERT SAYS, NEED TO BE MADE NOW.

Warren Watanabe, Exec Dir., Maui County Farm Bureau

WW01: "The Central Valley will probably be preserved for agriculture. But we're really looking at is Upcountry where the vegetable production of Maui is really produced. Those are the kind lands - we've already talked with the County - we want them to designate them as important agricultural lands, so that these lands will stay in agriculture in perpetuity."

THE FIRST ISLE EXPO BOPILED DOWN TO THIS: STOPPING FOR A MOMENT, SEEING HOW THINGS ARE, SEEING WHAT THERE IS, WHAT THERE ISN'T ENOUGH OF, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. IN OTHER WORDS: PLANNING.

AD03: "There's definitely a big planning component to what we do. We want people to envision what a sustainable future can be and what it's going to take to get there. That's really one of the main reasons why we have events like this is to show shat are the challenges we face to create a sustainable future and what are the pathways we can take to get there."//

AND GETTING THERE - GREEN - COULD BE A LOT OF FUN. REPORTING FROM THE MCC CAMPUS FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.

(Lokahi - Affordable homes)(PiP-lokahi Pacific)

J: ONE OF THE KEYS TO SUSTAINABLE LIVING IS, OF COURSE, TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO LIVE AND TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD WHERE YOU LIVE. THIS WEEK SEVEN FAMILIES - WHO DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO THEY ARE YET - GOT A GOOD HEAD START.

(FF-CG-VO) THIS WEEK A CHECK FOR 250,000 DOLLARS WAS PRESENTED TO LOKAHI PACIFIC BY THE PACIFIC RIM LAND COMPANY TO SUPPORT THE CREATION OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN SOUTH MAUI. THE MONEY WILL GO TOWARD SITE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION COSTS FOR A SEVEN-UNIT DEVELOPMENT IN KIHEI.

THE SITE IS ON A LITTLE OVER ONE ACRE ON KENOLIO AND LEILANI STREETS IN KIHEI ON LAND ACQUIRED BY LOKAHI PACIFIC WITH A GRANT FROM THE COUNTY HOUSING PROGRAM.

(ON-CAM) EACH OF THE SEVEN UNITS WILL BE THREE-BEDROOM, TWO BATH HOMES TOTALING 11-HUNDRED SQUARE FEET. EACH HOME WILL HAVE ALL-NEW APPLIANCES, INCLUDING WASHER AND DRYER AND ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRICED AT $250,000. PROSPECTIVE BUYERS MUST MEET ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING BEING AT OR BELOW 80 PERCENT OF THE MEDIAN INCOME LEVEL IN MAUI COUNTY.

LOKAHI PACIFIC IS STILL LOOKING FOR MORE DONATIONS TO TO THE PROJECT TO HELP DEVELOP A FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS FUND TO PROVIDE DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES SEEKING A HOME LOAN.

THE DONATION BY PACIFIC RIM LAND IS PART OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL AGREEMENT WITH MAUI COUNTY.

(Habitat)(PiP-Habitat)

JY: BUILDING ON THAT THEME, PARDON THE PUN, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOPES TO PUT THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON 12 NEW HOMES IN WIEHU THIS SATURDAY. IT'S THE FIFTH ANNUAL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD-A-THON.

(vo) LAST YEAR'S EVENT DREW HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS WHO BROKE GROUND AND GOT SEVERAL FRAMES READY FOR A DOZEN HOMES IN THE WAIEHU KOU FOUR SUBDIVISION IN NORTH MAUI. THE BUILD-A-THON PROGRAM, IS A PUBLIC AWARENESS AND FUND-ARISING EVENT THAT ENCOURAGES TEAMS OF VOLUNTEERS TO WORK SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH HOMEOWNERS IN BUILDING COMMUNITIES.

(ON-CAM) THE BUILD-A-THON IS A STATEWIDE EVENT, BUT EVERY PENNY RAISED FOR THE MAUI EVENT STAYS ON MAUI. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

(FF-CG) PUT TOGETHER A TEAM OF TEN VOLUNTEERS TO WORK THIS SATURDAY AT WAIEHOU KOU FOUR. EACH VOLUNTEER MUST RAISE A MINIMUM OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS IN PLEDGES. HERE'S A HINT: FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE GREAT SOURCES TO COLLECT THOSE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS. PLEDGES CAN BE MADE BASED ON THE NUMBER OF HOURS SPENT BUILDING - OR AS JUST A FLAT SUM.

(ON-CAM) PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED TO THE TEAMS AND PARTICIPANTS THAT RAISE THE MOST MONEY. OF COURSE, YOU ALSO GET TO DO THE WORK AND NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS AND CRAFTSMEN WILL BE ON-SITE TO BE SURE ALL CONSTRUCTION WORK IS UP TO CODE. THIS WEEKEND'S BUILD-A-THON WILL BE PUTTING THE TRIM AND FINISHING TOUCHES ON HOMES STARTED A YEAR AGO.

FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK YOU'LL RECEIVE A HABITAT T-SHIRT AND HAT, CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST, ENTERTAINMENT, PRIZES, LUNCH FROM OUTBACK STEAK HOUSE - AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SATISFACTION OF KNOWING YOU HELPED PROVIDE A NEW HOME FOR A DESERVING MAUI FAMILY. YOU'LL ALSO HAVE THE CHANCE TO WORK SIDE-BY SIDE WITH LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DUKE AIONA.

FOR DETAILS ON THIS SATURDAY'S EVENTS AND HOW TO SIGN UP, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(MOLO Water)(PiP-Molokai Properties)

JY: HOMEOWNERS IN WEST MOLOKA'I WILL GET RELIEF FROM WATER RATES THAT ARE EXPECTED TO TRIPLE FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS.

LAST WEEK THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RELEASED IT'S FINDINGS OF FACT ORDERING MOLOKA’I PROPERTIES TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THEIR 12-HUNDRED CUSTOMERS IN WEST MOLOKAI WITH WATER AND WASTEWATER SERVICES. AT THE SAME TIME THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION GRANTED THE COMPANY'S REQUEST TO TRIPLE WATER RATES FOR A SIX-MONTH PERIOD, TO ALLOW THE COMPANY TO MEET ANTICIPATED SHORTFALLS IN REVENUE.

ON FRIDAY MAUI MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES ISSUED A STATEMENT EXPRESSING CONCERN THAT THE COMPANY WOULD HONOR THE ORDER TO STAY IN BUSINESS. BUT SHE ALSO ISSUED A PROMISE TO MOLOKA'I RESIDENTS THAT THE COUNTY WILL PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THOSE WHO CAN’T AFFORD LARGE UTILITY RATE HIKES APPROVED BY THE STATE. MAYOR TAVARES SAID SHE’S INSTRUCTED HER STAFF TO FORMULATE A PLAN. THE MAYOR PLANS SEND A TEAM TO MOLOKA'I WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS SO THOSE WHO QUALIFY CAN APPLY FOR THE AID.

TOSS TO B BLOCK

J: UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, FORTY-TWO YEARS IS A LONG TIME TO WAIT FOR KOREAN CHICKEN, ZIPPYS STYLE...BUT IT'S FINALLY ON MAUI. WE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE GRAND OPENING MAUI ZIPPY'S THIS WEEK.

JY: AND THERE IS A CROWD GATHERING NEAR THE SUMMIT OF HALEAKALA THAT NO ONE IS HAPPY ABOUT. DETAILS UP NEXT ON WASPS ON SLIDING SANDS.

J: AND ABOUT HALFWAY UP THE HILL, SOME VERY IMPORTANT FOLKS WENT TO WORK TO HELP SUPPORT THE LOCALS THAT LIVE JUST BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE SEA. WE'LL EXPLAIN WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

B BLOCK

(ZIPPY'S)(PiP-Zippy's logo)

JY: KOREAN CHICKEN, ZIP-MIN, APPLE NAPPLES. AND NOW YOU CAN GET IT WITHOUT HAVING TO GET ON A PLANE OR A BOAT. AFTER 42 YEARS, ZIPPY'S IS FINALLY ON MAUI. MAUI TV NEWS WAS THERE FOR THEIR GRAND OPENING THIS WEEK.

(Take ZIPPY'S pkg) THE POLICE WERE THERE TO HANDLE THE ANTICIPATED THRONG OF TRAFFIC, BUT WOUND UP KEEPING A CLOSER EYE ON THE NO-LEFT-TURN PORTION OF HO'OKELE STREET. THE GRAND OPENING MONDAY DIDN'T HAVE LONG LINES SNAKING ACROSS KAHULUI, BUT THEY WERE READY FOR IT. BY 11 A.M., A STEADY STREAM OF CUSTOMERS FLOWED THROUGH THE FAST FOOD LINE, WHILE THE MAIN DINING ROOM WAS STEADILY PACKED. AFTER 42 YEARS, ZIPPY'S WAS FINALLY ON MAUI.

O'AHU ZIPPY'S VETERAN JAYCE MINA WAS BROUGHT IN TO GET THE OPERATION UP AND RUNNING, TO BE SURE THE ZIPPY'S STYLE, TASTES, SERVICE AND QUALITY WOULD MEET CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS. ZIPPY'S ON MAUI WILL BE MUCH LIKE THE O'AHU RESTAURANTS, BUT IN ORDER TO BE LIKE THEM, THINGS WILL HAVE TO BE DONE DIFFERENTLY HERE.

Jayce Mina, Store Mge - Zippy's Kahului

JM01: "It's pretty different. The systems are different. The clientele is different. I would say Maui people are very nice. The setup of how we do things is very different because we don't have another location nearby to support us, so we have to stand on our own. The training process is different. We flew in O'ahu helpers to train the Maui employees - and we actually house them here for a few months to get the training going, to prepare the Maui store to serve the Maui community."

THE GRAND OPENING MONDAY WAS NOT A MADHOUSE AS SOME ANTICIPATED - BUT VERY ORDERLY. THAT WAS DUE, IN PART, TO THE FACT THAT - FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS - THEY'VE BEEN SERVING ANY CUSTOMER THAT CHECKED TO SEE IF THEY COULD COME IN AND EAT.

jm02: "It was a little chaotic at first because we welcomed anyone who didn't have coupons. It was supposed to be by invite only, but anyone who came in we took them in."

MENU CHOICES ARE AS GOOD AS THEY LOOK...BUT THE MAUI TONNAGE OF FAMOUS ZIPPY'S CHILI HAS BEGUN. DURING THEIR SOFT OPENING, THEY SERVED AN AVERAGE OF 256 POUNDS OF CHILI A DAY. THEY EXPECT THAT TO DOUBLE - QUICKLY.

BUT, EVEN IF YOU'VE ALREADY EATEN, TELL ME IF THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE RIGHT NOW.

Les Yokote, Customer

LY01: "We ordered plate lunches - hamburger steaks with gravy, chili fries. We also ordered a whole bunch of Napolean pastries from cornbread to browbnies..ha."

Jason Cutitta, Customer

JC01: "I got the Koran Chicken plate. Why? Oh it's my favorite. I lived in O'ahu and it was my favorite over there. I've been waiting for this for a while so I had to get it here."

AND GETTING IT THERE WAS PRETTY SMOOTH, TOO. THE BRAND NEW STAFF - PLUS O'AHU ZIPPYS VETERANS, SEEM TO ENJOY THEIR WORK...AND A LITTLE CAMERA TIME, BUT THEY COULD USE HELP. IN FACT, ZIPPY'S STILL HAS JOB OPENINGS - SOME GOOD NEWS GIVEN MAUI'S ECONOMIC TOUGH TIMES OF LATE. THE FAMOUS MOVIE LINE SAID, "IF YOU BUILD IT - THEY WILL COME. WELL THEY DID AND THEY HAVE. REPORTING FROM KAHULUI FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.

(on-cam tag) FOR NOW, ZIPPY'S WILL BE OPEN 24/7 AND BUSINESS SUPPORTS IT, IT WILL STAY THAT WAY. JUDGING BY HOW LONG MAUI HAS HAD TO WAIT FOR OUR VERY OWN ZIPPY'S, IT LOOKS LIKE THAT 24/7 PLAN MIGHT BE IN EFFECT FOR A LONG TIME.

(Yellowjackets)(PiP-Haleakala Crater)

J: BUT, UP THE HILL THERE'S ANOTHER CROWD GATHERING - AND NOBODY IS PLEASED ABOUT IT. WESTERN YELLOW JACKET WASPS ARE BACK INSIDE THE CRATER AT HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK AND THERE SEEM TO BE MORE OF THEM THAN EVER

(Marilyn Parris SOT)

PARK RANGERS SAY THERE IS USUALLY AN INCREASE OF WASPS IN THE SUMMER MONTHS, BUT THEY SAY THIS YEAR IS EXCEPTIONAL.

(SOT-2-locations)

THE YELLOW JACKETS ARE ATTRACTED TO WATER, MEAT, SWEETS - BOTH FOOD AND DRINKS, AS WELL AS SWEET-SMELLING PERFUME, AFTER SHAVE AND COLOGNE - EVEN SUNSCREEN. THE BUGS TEND TO SWARM AROUND PEOPLE WHO STOP FOR A MEAL OR A SNACK AND THEY CAN STING WITHOUT WARNING - AND WITHOUT BEING SWATTED AT.

(SOT-3-PROVOCATION)

IN FACT, THEY SAY DON’T SWAT AT THE YELLOW JACKETS, 'CUZ YOU'LL JUST MAKE THEM EVEN MADDER. REACTIONS TO WASP STINGS CAN RANGE FROM OBVIOUS PAIN, REDNESS AND SWELLING AND, LATER, IRRITATION AND ITCHING. IN RARE CASES, SEVERE REACTIONS CAN INCLUDE ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK, DIFFICULTY BREATHING AND RESPIRATORY ARREST. IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO BEE STINGS, BE SURE TO CARRY YOUR EMERGENCY KIT AND YOUR CELL PHONE. IF YOU - OR SOMEONE YOU'RE TRAVELLING WITH HAS A SEVER REACTION, CALL 9-1-1 AND GET TO THE NEAREST PARK VISITOR'S CENTER AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

(IYOR-Pukalani)(PiP-IYOR logo)

JY: CORAL REEF PROTECTION IN PUKALANI? THERE MAY NOT BE ANY SEA LIFE THAT FAR ABOVE SEA LEVEL, BUT SINCE THERE ARE POEPLE THERE GO TO THE BEACH, REEF PRESERVATION SPECIALISTS WENT TO THEM. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WENT THERE, TOO.

(Take IYOR pkg) THE OFFICIAL ELEVATION OF PUKALANI IS 15 HUNDRED AND 26 FEET - NOT THE KINDA PLACE YOU'D EXPECT TO FIND A TURTLE. BUT, SATURDAY AT THE PUKALANI SUPARETTE, CHECKSTANDS 1, 2 AND 3 PROBABLY WEREN'T THE PLACES YOU EXPECTED TO FIND A COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER, THE SUPERINTENDENT OF HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK OR THE MAYOR HERSELF.

BAGGING GROCERIES IS TEACHING PEOPLE ABOUT CARING FOR OUR CORAL REEFS.

KP01: "Yes it is, the reusable shopping bag program is directly tied to the coral reef education. We're here today to try to get people to do the 10 easy things to protect the coral reef and one of those things is by using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic."

VOLUNTEERS HOPE TO DISTRIBUTE 600 BAGS TODAY, ALONG WITH STICKERS, BROCHURES AND A LESSON OR TWO, OR THREE IN REEF ETIQUETTE. AND THE UPCOUNTRY FOLKS SEEM TO ENJOY THE EFFORT.

KP02: "I think there's a general feeling of appreciation from customers - getting this bag and it's free and it's a beautiful bag and they appreciate it. And it's wonderful seeing them come out of the store already using it."

IT WAS COINCIDENCE AND NOT A STATEMENT WHEN WE CAUGHT SUPERINTENDENT MARILYN PARRIS PUTTING THE EGGS ON THE BOTTOM OF A PLASTIC BAG, BECAUSE THERE WAS FOCUS, ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND LOVING CARE EXERCISED BY ALL THREE VIPS - WORKING ON A SATURDAY ON BEHALF OF THE CREATURES THAT MAKE THEIR HOME UNDER THE SEA. REPORTING FROM PUKALANI FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M JEFF KING.

(on-cam tag) NO MATTER HOW HIGH UP THE MOUNTAIN YOU LIVE, YOUR LIFE HAS AN IMPACT ON THE OCEAN. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP PROTECT THE REEF, FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Superferry "Jam")(PiP-Kaua'i Superferry Protest)

J: AMONG THE ANNIVERSARIES BEING NOTED SURROUND THE SUPERFERRY THIS MONTH IS ONE THAT WILL BE OBSERVED THIS WEEKEND. AND IT COMMEMORATES A DAY A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE PROUD OF, A LOT OF PEOPLE AREN'T AND - FOR THOSE WHO WERE THERE - A DAY THEY WILL NEVER FORGET.

(vo) LAST YEAR ON AUGUST 27TH, PROTESTERS TOOK TO THE WATER IN SWARMS TO GET BETWEEN THE GIANT HAWAII SUPERFERRY AND IT'S LOADING BARGE AT NAWILIWILI HARBOR ON KAUA'I. THE COAST GUARD DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH VESSELS OR CREW TO ENFORCE THE SECURITY ZONE AROUND THE ALAKAI AND - AFTER WAITING OUTSIDE THE HARBOR ENTRANCE FOR SEVERAL HARBORS, THE BOAT RETURNED TO HONOLULU AND HASN'T BEEN BACK SINCE.

(ON-CAM) THIS WEEKEND, A GROUP CALLED "FERRY FREE KAUA'I" IS PLANNING A -PARDON THE PUN - JAM AT THE HARBOR SUNDAY FROM NOON TO 6 P.M. THERE WILL BE WATER SLIDES FOR THE KIDS, AND EVENTS, GAMES - PLENTY OF FOOD AND SKIT ENTITLED, 'YOU WERE THERE." PROCEED FROM THE SALE OF FOOD AND AUCTION ITEMS WILL GO TO FUND THE GROUPS LEGAL CHALLENGE TO THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY IN THE HAWAII STATE SUPREME COURT.

HAWAII SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS SAY THERE STILL ARE NO PLANS TO BEGIN SERVICE BETWEEN O'AHU AND KAUA'I AND WON'T BE UNTIL THERE IS, WHAT THEY CALL "WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE" TO THE NOTION OF SERVICE. AN UNOFFICIAL POLL TAKEN IN JANUARY BY THE KAUA'I CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SHOWED THAT 79.5 PERCENT OF THOSE POLLED FELT THE SUPERFERRY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO OPERATE. THE SAME SURVEY SHOWED THAT 86 PER CENT FELT THAT THE SUPERFERRY WOULD HELP RATHER THAN HURT LOCAL BUSINESS.

(Toss to C Block)

JY: UP NEXT IN SPORTS, M-I-L PRESEASON FOOTBALL KICKED OFF THIS WEEKEND. BUT WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE KICKOFF WAS NOT TOO PLEASANT FOR THE HOME TEAMS. KALAPANA HAS DETAILS AND HIGHLIGHTS ON THAT - PLUS THE CHAOS OF RELAY CHANGES IN LONG DISTANCE PADDLING.

HC: THEN HOLLY CHUNG HAS DETAILS ON EVERYTHING FROM SPIRITUAL EXERCISE TO UPLIFTING REGGAR TO BARKIN IN DA PARK. IT'S ALL IN COMING ATTRACTIONS WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(sports) (PiP-Sports)

K: WITH JUST TWO WEEKS TO PUT TOGETHER A TEAM BEFOR FACING THEIR FIRST PRE-SEASON FOE, THE MAUI HIGH SABERS HAD THEIR WORJ CUT OUT FOR THEM. UNFORTUNATELY, IT APPEARS THAT THEY STILL DO.

ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

THE SABERS HAVE A NEW HEAD COACH THIS YEAR. AFTER 24 YEARS AS AN ASSISTANT COACH, RODERICK FONG STEPPED INTO THE HEAD JOB WITH THE 2008 SEASON - BUT THEIR FIRST GAME SHOWED HIM THAT THE NEW TOP JOB IS NOT GOING TO BE ANY EASIER THAN HIS OLD ONE.

(vo) A FULL MOON BLESSED THE NIGHT OVER WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM AND THE SABERS WERE IN FINE VOCAL FORM - BUT IN THE TIME IT TOOK OUR CAMERA TO GET INTO PLACE, THE KALAHEA MUSTANGS HAD RUN THE OPENING KICKOFF BACK FOR A TOUCHDOWN. THE EXTRA POINT IS GOOD AND - WITH LESS THAN A QUARTER MINUTE GONE, IT'S KALAHEO UP SEVEN-ZIP.

SABERS FIRST POSSESSION AND QUARTERBACK JORDAN INAMASU HANDS OFF THE FULLBACK BUT KALAHEO'S LINEBACKER STRIPS IT AND - JUST LIKE THAT- BACK THE OTHER WAY. SABERS DEFENSE SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE FIELD AND HERE GOOD PURSUIT RESULTS IN ONLY A TWO YARD MUSTANG GALLOP. BUT ON THE NEXT PLAY A QUICK COUNT CATCHES THE SABRES OFFGUARD WHILE CATCHING KALAHEA ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN. AND THE EXTRA POINT IS GOOD. 14-ZIP IN THE FIRST.

CONFUSION WAS APPARENT FOR MAUI HIGH AS JORDAN INAMASU LOSES THE HANDLE ON THIS SNAP...AND THEN NUMBER 71 LOSES HIS SHOE.

LUCK MOMENTARILY SMILED ON THE SABERS ON THIS PLAY AS JORDAN INAMASU SCRAMBLES TO HIS LEFT AND TRIES A SWING PASS THAT'S ALMOST PICKED OFF BY KALAHEO. TWICE. BUT THEY FAILED TO CAPITALIZE.

KALAHEO'S BALL AGAIN AS QUARTERBACK PHIL TAUAI FAKED EVERYONE AND SCAMPERED DOWN TO THE SABER 17 BEFORE BEING DRAGGED DOWN FROM BEHIND. THEN THERE WAS THE LAUNDRY AS A SABER PERSONAL FOUL MOVED IT ANOTHER 10 YARDS DOWN TO THE SEVEN. ON THE NEXT PLAY IT'S KALAHEO'S PHIL TAUAI AGAIN FOR THE KEEPER AND THE SCORE AND THE P-A-T AND JUST LIKE THAT IT'S 21-NOTHING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. OR, MORE PRECISELY - IN THE FIRST EIGHTH.

ff-cg-vo) WE;'LL SPARE YOU ANY MORE OF THIS EXPECT TO SAY THAT KALAHEO LED 41- NOTHING AT THE HALF BEFORE ADDING JUST A FIELD GOAL IN THE SECOND HALF. THINGS DIDN'T GO ANY BETTER UPCOUNTRY AS KAMEHAMEHA MAUI FELL TO THE IOLANI RAIDERS 39 TO NOTHING.

UP THIS WEEK IN PRESEASON, IT'S THE BALDWIN BEARS OPENING THEIR 2008 CAMPAIGN AGAINST KAMEHAMEHA HAWAII FRIDAY NIFGHT AT WARMEMIORIAL. ON SATURDAY, KING KEKAULIKE HOSTS KEALAKEHE AND LAHAINALUNA HOSTS EDISON, FROM CALIFORNIA AT 7 AT WAR MEMORIAL.

(ON-CAM) AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT...TAG TEAM CANOE PADDLING. IF IT SOUNDS DANGEROUS...JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE IT!

(vo) KALAE POHAKU IN KIHEI IS THE SETTING FOR THE SECOND LONG DISTANCE RACE OF THE CANOE PADDLING SEASON. IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY, YOU'LL HEAR THE RULES: "TRY NOT TO KILL EACH OTHER. OH...AND HAVE FUN." OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

YOU COULD TELL, EARLY ON THAT THIS WAS GOING TO BE A LESS-THAN SERIOUS EVENT, BUT THERE WERE THOSE WHO SOUGHT DIVINE HELP TO NOT LOOK SILLY. THE IDEA: TEAMS OF SIX MEN AND SIX WOMEN - IN ANY COMBINATION, WOULD PADDLE A TOTAL OF ABOUT 20 MILES, MAKING ENTIRE CREW CHANGES AT FIVE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. OH, AND YOU HAD TO ESTIMATE YOUR TOTAL RACE TIME WITHOUT GOING OVER. BOATS INTO THE WATER FOR ANOTHER PRECISION START. WELL, OK...CALL IT A FLYING START AS THE OFFICIAL BOAT TAKES OFF AND EVERYBODY FOLLOWS.

NOW THIS IS WHERE IT GETS NUTS. AS THE BOATS APPROACH THE FIRST RELAY CHANGE POINT AT HAYCRAFT PARK, CREWS NUMBER TWO GET SET TO GET WET. ORGANIZED?? HARDLY. FUN?? ABSOLUTELY. FIRST GUINEA PIGS - ER - EXAMPLES WAS KIHEI'S OPEN MEN'S CREW, WITH THE WOMEN IN WAITING. NOT BAD, NOT BAD...AND OFF GO THE LADIES. BUT WHEN YOU HAVE SIX OR EIGHT BOATS...ALL TRYING TO RECOGNIZE THEIR TEAM OF BOBBING HEADS...WELL, JUST WATCH. I'M NOT SURE THIS SPORT IS READY FOR THE OLYMPICS...OR MAYBE THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

AFTER A FEW NEAR MISSES - AND A FEW CHOICE WORDS, THE LEADERS WERE ON THEIR WAY...AND THIS SCENE WAS REPEATED FOUR MORE TIMES BEFORE THE FINSIH LINE AT HANAKA'O'O BEACH PARK. AND JUST FOR FUN...RACE ORGANZERS THREW IN A SNORKEL CRUISE BOAT TO PLAY CHICKEN WITH.

(I don't have results yet...hopefull first thing in the morning)

(ON-CAM) NEXT UP IN THE LONG DISTANCE SEASON IS THE QUEEN KA'AHUMANU RACE THIS SAYIRDAY, HOSTED BY NA KAI EWALU.

AND THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS FOR THIS WEEK. IF YOUR TEAM HAS A SEASON OR SPECIAL SPORTING EVENT COMING UP, WE'D LIKE TO HELP YOU GET THE WORD OUT. SEND YOUR NOTICES TO SPORTS AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM. WE'LL DO OUR VERY BEST TO GET A CREW OUT TO CAPTURE THE ACTION. FOR MAUI TV NEWS I'M KALAPANA. NOW HERE'S HOLLY CHUNG WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS.)
