(Headlines - VO)

A. J: IT'S GOT LOTS OF LEG ROOM, PARALLEL PARKS LIKE A DREAM AND THOSE IN CHARGE HOPE IT WILL BE THE FUTURE OF INTER-ISLAND TRAVEL IN HAWAII.

JY: A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST. THAT'S WHAT STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND LOCALS - WHO WERE THERE BACK THEN - ENJOYED WHEN A TIME CAPSULE THAT WAS BURIED 50 YEARS AGO IN THE WALL OF A LAHAINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WAS FINALLY OPENED THIS WEEK.

J: AND BUILDING ON ITS FOUNDATION OF A QUARTER CENTURY OF BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES, THE HEAD OF THE MAUI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD EYES THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS IN MAUI COUNTY.

JY: IN SPORTS, AS THE FALL FOOTBALL SEASON APPROACHES FOR THE M-I-L, PLAYERS AND COACHES CAN LOOK FORWARD TO SOME SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. KALAPANA WILL HAVE THE DETAILS IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

J: AND, JULIE Y HAS THE DETAILS ABOUT FIRST-OF-ITS KIND CONCERT COMING TO THE HISTORIC IAO THEATER, AND MAJOR ROCK AND ROLL ACTS HEADING THIS WAY. DETAILS ON THESE SHOWS AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. CYNDI MAYO DAVIS IS ON VACATION. AFTER HEARING ABOUT IT, READING ABOUT IT AND SEEING IT ON TV, MAUI LOCALS FINALLY GOT A PEEK INSIDE THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY.

(turn to cam)(PiP: superferry)

JY: THE ALAKAI, IT'S OFFICERS AND CREW, OPENED THE HATCHES TO THOUSANDS OF MAUI RESIDENTS THIS WEEK, INCLUDING MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING. HE FILES THIS REPORT ON THE FIRST-EVER TELEVISED PEEK INSIDE THE SUPERFERRY ON MAUI.

(Take superferry pkg)

(on cam tag)

JY: THE MAIDEN VOYAGE IS NOT SOLD OUT YET, AND YOU CAN MAKE RESERVATIONS ON LINE THROUGH THE SUPERFERRY WEB SITE. ROUNDTRIP FROM MAUI TO OAHU FOR TWO ADULTS WITH A CAR, WITH AN ONLINE BOOKING DISCOUNT, IS 468 DOLLARS AND 28 CENTS. FOR DETAILS, FOLLOW THE LINK FROM OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(PiP-protest)

C. J: SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS ESTIMATED BETWEEN 35-HUNDRED AND 4,000 FOLKS MADE THEIR WAY THROUGH THE ALAKAI ON SATURDAY. WHILE REACTION INSIDE THE VESSEL WAS ALMOST UNANIMOUSLY POSITIVE, PROTESTERS OUTSIDE REPRESENTING PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION DID THEIR BEST TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT COLLISIONS BETWEEN HUMPBACK WHALES AND THE GIANT CATAMARAN ARE INEVITABLE. PROTESTERS SAY THAT - NO MATTER HOW MANY LOOKOUTS THE SUPERFERRY MAY HAVE ON BOARD, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO SPOT WHALES WHO ARE ABOUT TO SURFACE AND OF COURSE, FERRY TRIPS AFTER DARK PRESENT AN EVEN GREATER THREAT TO WHALES, BECAUSE HUMPBACK WHALES ARE TYPICALLY MORE ACTIVE AT NIGHT THAN THEY ARE DURING THE DAY.

(FF-vo-cg) THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY PLANS AN ALTERNATE ROUTE DURING WHALE SEASON - ONE THAT AVOIDS THE LEEWARD WATERS OF MOLOKAI AND WILL CUT A WIDER SWATH ON TRIPS BETWEEN HONOLULU AND KAWAIHAE WHEN THE SECOND VESSEL ENTERS SERVICE IN 2009. THE REGULAR ROUTE OFFERS A PATH THROUGH THE CALMEST WATERS DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR WHEN WHALES ARE BACK IN THEIR SUMMER FEEDING GROUNDS.

(on-cam tag) BE SURE TO JOIN US NEXT WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS WHEN WE'LL TAKE YOU OUT TO SEE ON THE ALAKAI TO SEE HOW SHE HANDLES ON THE OPEN OCEAN.

(MEDB)

D. JY: THEIR VISION: " A FUTURE IN WHICH ABUNDANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR REWARDING EMPLOYMENT ARE MET BY A QUALIFIED RESIDENT WORKFORCE IN MAUI COUNTY...A COMMUNITY WHICH HONORS ITS CULTURAL HERITAGE AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT." WE'VE ALL HEARD OF MEDB, THE MAUI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD...BUT WHAT IS IT?

JS01: MEDB is an organization made up of the public and private sector with a goal of diversifying the economy and that means new jobs - as I was saying. New jobs - new rewarding jobs to draw back our Kamaaina home, or to keep our kamaaina home who want to stay home that will be lucrative enough that they can really enjoy a great quality of life here."

WITH A FOCUS ON HIGH TECHNOLOGY CAREERS, BUT SUPPORTING A WIDE VARIETY OF INDUSTRIES FROM AGRICULTURE TO ASTRONOMY, THE MEDB HAS SEEN THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABORS GROW.

JS02: "Overall the tech workforce has grown from about 130 back when we started to over 1300 now so it's really been nice steady growth."

JUST A FEW OF THE PROJECTS MEDB HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH INCLUDE MAUI TECH OHANA, THE MAUI FOOD TECHNOLOGY CENTER, THE LANAI'I WOMEN'S CENTER, EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY'S MASTERS PROGRAM, AND THE MAUI FILM FESTIVAL AT WAILEA. THEIR AFFILIATION WITH THE AIR FORCE RESEARCH LABORATORY AND THE INSTITUTE FOR ASTRONOMY ARE JUST TWO OF THE MANY PROGRAMS IN WHICH MEDB IS REACHING OUT INTO OUTER SPACE...LITERALLY. THE ONGOING MISSION IS TO MAKE MAUI A PLACE KAMAAINA WANT TO LIVE AND WORK IN CAREERS THAT STIMULATE AS WELL AS REWARD.

js03: "Basically, our kamaaina want to be here. They want to come back much sooner than I wanted to come back when I was growing up. They realize it's a great quality of life here - it's a life they want to be a part of. So it's nice to be able to help them do that, and not give up professional goals in order to do that"

TONIGHT MEDB CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY OF MAUI. AT A GALA RECEPTION AT THE WAILEA MARRIOTT, SENATOR DANIEL INOUYE AND MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES WILL HOST A BENEFIT DINNER FOR THE KE ALAHELE FOUNDATION, ONE OF MEDB'S NEWEST VENTURES. DURING THE EVENT, STATE REPRESENTATIVE BOB NAKASONE WILL BE PRESENTED THE COLIN C. CAMERON AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE IN SUPPORTING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

E. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...THE SAME MONTH ELVIS FIRST APPEARED IN THE MOVIE, JAILHOUSE ROCK, A TIME CAPSULE WAS SEALED INTO THE WALL OF A LAHAINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. LAST WEEK THEY OPENED THE CAPSULE. WE'LL TELL YOU WHAT WAS INSIDE, NEXT.

JY: AS HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES, THE "KIHEI TRIANGLE" CLEARING IS STARTING TO MAKE SENSE. WE'LL SHOW WHAT'S PLANNED FOR THE ROAD WHEN WE COME BACK.

J: AND WE'LL HAVE THE LATEST INSTALLMENT IN THE SOAP OPERA, "AS AFFORDABLE HOUSING LOOMS" WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(break)

(b block)

(Time Capsule) (PiP-Time Capsule)

F. JY: IT WAS THE YEAR THE SOVIET UNION PUT THE FIRST SATELLITES IN ORBIT. THAT SAME YEAR, THE VERY FIRST COMPUTER LANGUAGE WAS CREATED. IT WAS ALSO THE YEAR THAT THE BROOKLYN DODGERS MOVED TO LOS ANGELES. IN HONOLULU, ELVIS PRESLEY PERFORMED HIS FIRST CONCERT OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA. A TSUNAMI STRUCK OAHU AND HURRICANE NINA THREATENED KAUA'I. MEANWHILE ON MAUI, PRECIOUS LOCAL MEMORIES WERE SEALED IN A BOX IN A WALL AT A LITTLE SCHOOL ON FRONT STREET. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WAS THERE LAST WEEK WHEN THE TIME CAPSULE WAS OPENED.

(take time capsule package)

(on-cam tag) SCHOOL PRINCIPAL LINDSEY BALL SAYS A FINAL DECISION OF THE CONTENTS OF THE NEW TIME CAPSULE HAS NOT YET BEEN MADE, BUT IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO DONATE AN I-POD, IT WOULD BE GLADLY ACCEPTED.

(Highway Progress)(PiP-KIHEI "TRIANGLE")

G. J: WHILE IT MAY SEEM TO SOME THAT WORK ON COUNTY AND STATE HIGHWAYS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 1957, HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS TELL MAUI TV NEWS THAT THEY ARE MAKING PROGRESS.

(vo) THEY CALL IT "THE KIHEI TRIANGLE," AND IT HAS BEEN A DENSELY GROWN THICKET THAT FRONTS KIHEI TOWN APPROACHING FROM THE NORTH. JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO MOST OF THAT VEGETATION WAS CLEARED - PRESUMABLY AS PART OF THE EXPANSION AND MERGING OF THE MOKULELE AND PIILANI HIGHWAYS. IN THIS AERIAL VIEW OF THE TRIANGLE, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH KIHEI ROAD AND NORTH KIHEI ROAD WILL BE MOVED MAUKA ABOUT A HUNDRED FEET. STATE TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS SAY THEY'RE DOING THIS FOR TWO REASONS: ONE, THE REALIGNED ROAD WILL CREATE A MORE PERPENDICULAR AND STRAIGHTER T-SHAPED INTERSECTION, ALLOWING DRIVERS BETTER VISIBILITY OF TRAFFIC COMING FROM EITHER DIRECTION. SECOND, SLIGHTLY REALIGNING THE ROAD MOVES IT AWAY FROM NEARBY CONDOMINIUM UNITS - CREATING LESS NOISE FOR RESIDENTS.

(on-cam) THE REASON THE STATE IS NOT USING THE ENTIRE FIVE-ACRE TRIANGLE TO REALIGN THE ROAD IS BECAUSE THE STATE DOESN'T OWN THE ENTIRE PARCEL.

(PiP - Affordable housing-Honua'ula)

H. JY: WHETHER OR NOT LOCALS EARNING MODERATE ANNUAL INCOME WILL EVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD A PLACE OF THEIR OWN. THAT'S THE HOT TOPIC THIS WEEK AT THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL. LAST WEEK THREE MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL REQUESTED ADDITIONAL PUBLIC HEARINGS ON THE LONG-DEBATED HONUA'ULA DEVELOPMENT PLANNED FOR 670 ACRES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF MAUI MEADOWS. RESPONDING TO THE REQUEST, COUNCIL CHAIR RIKI HOKAMA ASKED THE COUNCIL MEMBERS IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO DISCHARGE THE LAND USE COMMITTEE FROM THEIR HEARING OBLIGATION. IF THEY SAY YES, THEN THE ENTIRE PUBLIC HEARING PROCESS WOULD HAVE TO START OVER. SO FAR, MORE THAN 27 HOURS OF PUBLIC TESTIMONY HAVE BEEN HEARD ON THE ISSUE.

(Pip-Affordable Housing Puukolii)

I. J: AT THE OTHER END OF THE ISLAND, PROGRESS MAY BE STIRRING ON A PROJECT THAT WAS FIRST PROPOSED BACK IN 1993. PU'UKOLI'I VILLAGE WOULD BRING 940 NEW HOMES - FIFTY PERCENT OF THEM CLASSIFIED AS "AFFORDABLE" TO LAND OWNED BY KA'ANAPALI LAND MANAGEMENT CORPORATION, ON GENTLY SLOPING LAND MAUKA OF HONOKAWAI. AT THEIR ANNUAL MEETING, KAANAPALI OFFICIALS EXPRESSED THEIR DESIRE TO MAKE THE AFFORDABLE HOMES AVAILABLE - FIRST - TO LOCAL BUYERS. ALTHOUGH A REASONABLE SOUNDING IDEA, THE IDEA HAS BEEN CHALLENGED ON CONSTITUTIONAL GROUNDS IN OTHER HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS. THE DEVELOPMENT COULD COME BEFORE THE COUNTY COUNCIL LAND USE COMMITTEE LATER THIS YEAR AND - IF PASSED - THE FIRST AFFORDABLE HOMES COULD BE OCCUPIED BY 2010. INCIDENTALLY, ONE OF THE REASONS THE PROJECT HAS BEEN DELAYED SO LONG WAS THE CONDITION 14 YEARS AGO THAT THE LAHAINA BYPASS BE COMPLETED BEFORE CONSTRUCTION OF HOMES COULD BEGIN.

(PiP-Affordable Housing-Waine'e)

J. JY: ANOTHER KA'ANAPALI LAND MANAGEMENT CORPORATION PROJECT WOULD BRING HOUSING UNITS TO LANDS DIRECTLY MAUKA OF LAHAINA TOWN. WHERE A PLANTATION CAMP ONCE EXISTED, WAINE'E WOULD OFFER 750 HOMES ON 200 ACRES, WITH AT LEAST 51 PERCENT CLASSIFIED AS AFFORDABLE. ORIGINALLY PROPOSED IN 2001, THE DEVELOPMENT HAS COMPLETED EIS DOCUMENTS FOR SUBMISSION TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL LAND USE COMMITTEE. ONE OF THE PROPOSED BENEFITS OF THE WAINE'E PROJECT WOULD BE THE EXTENSION OF MILL STREET - IN AN EFFORT TO ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IN LAHAINA.

(PiP-AffordableHousing-Pulelehua)

K. J: TWO PHASES OF ONE PROJECT ARE MOVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS FOR MAUI LAND AND PINEAPPLE. THE COMPANY'S PROPOSED PULELEHUA HOUSING DEVELOPMENT, TO BE LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE KAPALUA WEST MAUI AIRPORT IN THE PIPE TO HAVE IT'S EIS AND LAND USE DOCUMENTS COME UP FOR REVIEW BEFORE THE COUNTY COUNCIL LATER THIS YEAR. THE PROJECT PROMISES AT LEAST 51 PERCENT AFFORDABLE HOUSING AMONG A DESIGN THAT INCLUDES A SCHOOL, PARKS AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES. MEANWHILE LAST WEEK THE COMPANY'S AFFORDABLE RENTAL PROJECT, KNOWN SIMPLY AS SIX-OH, RECEIVED APPROVAL FOR ITS SPECIAL MANAGEMENT AREA PERMIT TO GO AHEAD WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF ONE AND TWO-BEDROOM APARTMENTS ADJACENT TO THE KAPALUA RESORT. BY DOWNSIZING THE OVERALL SIZE OF THE PROJECT, REDUCING INDIVIDUAL BUILDING SIZES TO A MAXIMUM OF TWO STORIES, AND ELIMINATING THREE-BEDROOM APARTMENTS, THE MAUI PLANNING COMMISSION VOTED TO APPROVE THE PERMIT.

(Tease for C-Block)(2-shot)

L. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS...BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS BACK TO SPORTS! MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE COMPETITION BEGINS THIS WEEK. LOOK FOR SOME CHANGES IN MIL FOOTBALL COMPETITION THIS SEASON. KALAPANA IS UP NEXT WITH SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK RIGHT AFTER THAT WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS. A FIRST-EVER MUSIC FESTIVAL IS COMING TO THE IAO THEATER. AND FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER THE 70S, GET SET TO RELIVE THEM WHEN THREE DOG NOT COMES TO TOWN, JUST WEEKS BEFORE MEGASTARS AEROSMITH WALK THIS WAY. DETAILS COMING UP ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(C-Block)

(SPORTS!) (PiP - SPORTS!)

M. K: A CHANGE IS COMIN! ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT'S TIME FOR FOOTBALL! THE FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR FOR THE MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE IS A NON-CONFERENCE GAME TONIGHT BETWEEN MAUI HIGH AND SOUTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL FROM SAN GABRIEL CALIFORNIA. THE FIRST REGULAR SEASON GAME IS SEPTEMBER SEVENTH BETWEEN KAMEHAMEHA MAUI AND THE PAC-THREE TROJANS. BUT THERE WILL BE CHANGES THIS YEAR FOR MIL FOOTBALL.

JB: "What's different is that we're going to play divisions. Kekaulike is moving from Division 2 to division 1 and Lahainaluna moved from division 1 to division 2. You're going to play teams in your division twice and teams outside your division once."

AND WHY THE CHANGE?

JB02: "Uh the change was as far as the MIL was to give parity to the league and parity with the state also. We feel our teams can compete in division 1 and division 2."

BALANGITAO TOLD MAUI TV NEWS THAT THE DIVISIONS IN THE M-I-L WILL NOW BE BASED MORE CLOSELY ON TOTAL STUDENT ENROLLMENT RATHER THAN JUST THE LOCATIONS OF THE SCHOOL - A MOVE DESIGNED TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD EVEN MORE FROM EACH TEAM.

AND THERE'S ONE TEAM IN HAWAII THAT'S DRAWING NATIONAL ATTENTION. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVERY THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII WARRIORS ARE RANKED IN THE TOP-25 IN THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PRE-SEASON POLL. COACHES AND SPORTSWRITERS HAVE PICKED THE WARRIORS AS THE NUMBER 23 TEAM IN THE NATION. WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ARCH-RIVALS, BOISE STATE ALSO MADE THE TOP 25...COMING IN JUST BEHIND UH AT NUMBER 24. THE WARRIORS HAVE ALSO BEEN PICKED TO WIN THE WAC THIS YEAR. HEAD COACH JUNE JONES SAYS THE PRE-SEASON RANKING IS GOOD NEWS AND ALL, BUT HE'LL BE MUCH MORE EXCITED IF THE RANKING LOOKS LIKE THAT AT THE END OF THE SEASON. AND EVEN THOUGH THEY FINISHED FOURTH AT THE END OF LAST SEASON, USC TOPS THE AP PRE-SEASON COLLEGE FOOTBALL POLL.

(on cam) AND THAT'S A VERY QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. REMEMBER, IF YOUR TEAM HAS A SPORTING EVENT OR SEASON COMING UP, BE SURE TO DROP US A LINE AT SPORTS-AT-MAUITVNEWS.COM. (DisasterPrep)(PiP-Flossie)

O. J: WHEN IT COMES TO THE FORCES OF NATURE, TO PUT IT MILDLY, THIS WEEK WAS MUCH QUIETER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE ACROSS HAWAII.

(FF-CG-VO) FIRST IT WAS THE SPECTER OF A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE BEARING DOWN ON THE BIG ISLAND. AND AS IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH FOR RESIDENTS ON THE WINDWARD SIDE OF HAWAII, THERE WAS A SERIES OF EARTH QUAKES - WITH THE BIGGEST MEASURING 5.6 LAST TUESDAY. THEN THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE IN PERU THAT KILLED HUNDREDS THERE AND THREATENED TO SEND A TSUNAMI TOWARD THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

(ON-CAM TAG) CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICIALS ARE BREATHING A SIGH OF RELIEF. BUT IN THE MIDST OF THAT SIGH IS A WORRY THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BECOME COMPLACENT. SOME BELIEVE MAUI IS HURRICANE PROOF, OR THAT THE BIG ISLAND WOULD TAKE THE SERIOUS BRUNT OF A TSUNAMI. HISTORY HAS PROVEN OTHERWISE AND FOLKS WHO KNOW SUCH THINGS SAY IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE DISASTER VISITS MAUI. JOIN US NEXT WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS FOR OUR EXCLUSIVE CONVERSATION WITH MAUI COUNTY CIVIL DEFENSE DIRECTOR GEN IINUMA ABOUT THE GENUINE THREATS MAUI FACES AND HOW YOU CAN PREPARE TO SURVIVE ANY OF THEM.

(2-shot)

P. JY: THAT'S IT FOR THIS WEEK'S SHOW. THANKS FOR WATCHING. AND BE SURE TO VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM FOR STORY LINKS, ARCHIVED EDITIONS OF MAUI TV NEWS, AND WAYS TO LET US KNOW WHAT STORIES YOU'D LIKE US TO COVER. UNTIL NEXT WEEK, ALOHA.

J: ALOHA.
