J: HE MAY BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO USE THE WORDS HIGH AND TECH IN THE SAME SENTENCE - AND DECADES LATER SENATOR INOUYE IS STILL PREACHING THE MESSAGE.

AND, THEY'RE BACK - SURPRISINGLY STRONG UPSHOTS IN VISITOR ARRIVALS AND SPENDING BRING A DOUBLE DOSE OF GOOD NEWS TO MAUI COUNTY AND THE ENTIRE STATE.

(ON-CAM) THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS - PLUS IN OUR GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL! SEGMENT, WE'LL TAKE TO THE PLACE THAT'S BEEN HELPFUL TO FOLKS IN KAHULUI FOR 40 YEARS. IN SPORTS, THERE WAS GOODS NEWS AND BAD NEWS FOR HAWAII ATHLETES THIS WEEK. IN CURTAIN CALL, PAUL JANES-BROWN TREKS TO A MAKAWAO ART GALLERY TO SEE HOW ART CAN TURN SPIRIT INTO FORM. WE'VE GOT ALL THAT PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE. MAHALO FOR TUNING IN TO MAUI TV NEWS I'M JEFF KING - AND YOU'RE WATCHING MAUI'S EXCLUSIVE ONLINE AND TELEVISION NEWSCAST - IN HIGH DEFINITION. AS A YOUNGER MAN, SENATOR DANIEL INOUYE WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAUI RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN KIHEI. NOW - DECADES LATER, HE'S THE NATION'S MOST SENIOR SENATOR - YET HE HASN'T FORGOTTEN HOW TO LIGHT THAT SPARK IN A YOUNG MIND.

(TAKE INOUYE PKG) WHILE A CROWD MILLED ON THE GREAT DECK AT THE GRAND WAILEA LAST SATURDAY EVENING, A PRIVATE RECEPTION TO MEET AND CHAT AMONG MAUIS HIGH-TECH LEADERS AND U.S. SENATOR DANIEL INOUYE. SENATOR INOUYE HAS ATTENDED FIVE OF THESE FUNDRAISERS FOR KE ALAHELE SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED IN 2006.

Daniel Inoue, (D) U.S. Senator, Hawai'i

DI01: "Twenty years ago I think there were about a hundred men and women on this island who could claim they were in high technology work. Today there are over 25 hundred. One of the problems 20 hyears ago was that we were losing the brightest and the best. "Brain drain." They go off to school, get their masters degrees and doctorates but no jobs, so they go elsewhere. This has now beconme the Silicon Valley of the Pacific. Because of educational programs such as this we have to excite the kids - get them all enthused about it, then they'll start look it - that there is much more thsan just going to school to learn how to read and write."

LOOKING LIKE TOYS, THESE LEGO ROBOTS HAVE BEEN BUILT BY THESE STUDENTS WITH A MOTION SENSOR...AND THE STEM STUDENTS TOLD US THEY DON'T USE TEXT BOOKS - THAT GOOGLE IS THEIR TEXTBOOK. THAT WASN'T THE CASE 20 YEARS AGO EITHER.

DI02: "No, but a lot of things have changed in the past 20 years."

THE CROWD SEEMED MORE CROWDED THIS YEAR - AND IT WASN'T AN ILLUSION

Jeanne Skog, CEO, MEDB

JS01: "There are more people, yeah. This is a record-breaking year. We're just so honored.!"

THAT RECORD CROWD WAS THERE TO ENJOY SILENT AND LIVE AUCTIONS, AND THEIR TICKET FEES FOR THE EVENING BENEFIT THE FUND. THE KE ALAHELE FUND IS BENEFITTING 24 GRANTEES THIS YEAR - AND MEDB CEO JEANNE SKOG EXPLAIND HOW THEY CONNECT THE THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE WITH THE MONEY TO FUND IT.

JS02: "The money all goes into an education fund and the fund is a grant-making fund, so teachers, organizations - even students - can apply for funding to support their project or their new curriculum or even an internship. We review all applications and see how they best fit the criteria and award. And we definitely award more than we reject."

THE EVENING PULE ASKED FOR GUIDANCE FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY WAS THERE IN RECORD NUMBERS TO HELP THAN PRAYER GET ANSWERED.

(ON-CAM TAG) SINCE THE KE ALAHELE FUND WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2006, MORE THAN 6,800 MAUI COUNTY STUDENTS HAVE BENEFITTED FROM THE MAUI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD GRANT PROGRAM.

(recruiter opt-out)(PiP-STRIPES)

J: SPEAKING OF STUDENTS, A DIFFERENT TYPE OF CALL TO ARMS IS GOING OUT THIS WEEK. ONE OF THE LESSER-CLARIFIED ASPECTS OF THE FEDERAL NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT IS THAT EACH YEAR MIDDLE, INTERMEDIATE AND HIGH SCHOOLS THAT PARTICIPATE IN NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND HAVE TO PROVIDE A LIST OF ALL THEIR STUDENTS TO MILITARY RECRUITERS IN THE AREA. THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HAS DEVELOPED AN OPT-OUT FORM THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND COMPLETE. ONCE SUBMITTED, THE STUDENT'S NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE RECRUITER'S LISTS OF PROSPECTS.

YOU HAVE TO ACT QUICKLY AND GET THE FORM COMPLETED AND SENT IN BY WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH. YOU CAN STILL SUBMIT THE FORMS AFTER THAT, BUT THERE'S NO GUARANTEE RECRUITERS WILL REMOVE THEM RIGHT AWAY. FOR INFORMATION, FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(FLU SHOTS(PiP-FLU SHOT)

J: AND A QUICK REMINDER, MOM AND DAD, YOU ONLY HAVE UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY THE NINTH TO RETURN YOUR CONSENT FORMS FOR YOUR CHILDREN TO GET FREE FLU SHOTS AT SCHOOL. IN 2009 THE PROGRAM VACCINATED 70,000 STUDENTS AND 10,000 FACULTY AND STAFF.

(VISITOR STATS)(PiP-HAWAI'I LOGO)

J: OK, STUDENTS. POP QUIZ TIME. IF YOU HAVE 680,743 VISITORS - REPRESENTING A NINE PERCENT GROWTH SPURT THIS JULY OVER LAST. AND EACH OF THOSE VISITORS SPENDS 16 DOLLARS A DAY MORE THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR - WHICH WAY DOES THE SMOKE BLOW? NO. WAIT. ANYWAY, THE NEW VISITOR STATS WERE RELEASED THIS WEEK AND WERE DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND - IN A GOOD WAY.

(FF-CG-VO) TOTAL SPENDING BY VISITORS WHO CAME TO HAWAI'I IN JULY 20-10 GREW BY 23 PERCENT OVER JULY 0-9 TO JUST OVER A BILLION DOLLARS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY. AND FOR THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS OF THE YEAR, TOTAL VISITOR EXPENDITURES ARE UP TO 6-POINT-FOUR BILLION DOLLARS. THE BIGGEST REASON FOR THE BIG JUMP WAS THE BIG JUMP THE AMOUNT PER VISITOR SPENT PER DAY. IT WENT FROM AN AVERAGE OF 152 DOLLARS A DAY LAST YEAR TO 168 DOLLARS PER PERSON PER DAY THIS YEAR.

(ON-CAM) THE NEWS STAYED POSITIVE ACROSS THE BOARD. ARRIVALS FROM ALL MAJOR MARKETS INCREASED ACROSS THE STATE. THE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT MARKET OF THE MAINLAND WEST COAST GREW IN BOTH NUMBERS OF ARRIVALS AND LENGTH OF STAY. AND THEY SPENT ALMOST 10 PERCENT MORE PER DAY PER VISITOR THAN A YEAR AGO.

ONE OF THE OTHER HIGHLIGHTS IN THE REPORT WAS THAT LANA'I SHOWED THE GREATEST JUMP IN ARRIVALS WITH 14 PERCENT MORE VISITORS ON THE PINEAPPLE THAN CAME LAST JULY. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND READ THE ENTIRE REPORT. JUST GO TO MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(A TOSS B)

J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THEY'VE BEEN THE HELPFUL PLACE IN KAHULUI SINCE BEFORE DISCO. OUR GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL FEATURE EXPLORES THE WORLD OF MARMAC ACE HARDWARE. AND, WE'LL TELL YOU WHAT HAD SOME FOLKS WORRIED SUNDAY MORNING ALONG HANA HIGHWAY. THOSE STORIES AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(B-BLOCK)

(GCTL)(PiP-GCTL LOGO)

J: GOING UP AGAINST THE GIANTS IN RETAIL IS NEVER AN EASY TASK – AND THAT’S WHY MAUI COUNTY’S “GOT CHOICE? THINK LOCAL!" CAMPAIGN MAY BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. THIS WEEK WE TAKE YOU TO A PLACE IN KAHULUI MAUI THAT’S BEEN HELPING FOLKS FOR 40 YEARS.

(TAKE GCTL PKG) NO STRANGER TO MARKETING, BILL MARRS HAS ALWAYS WORKED TO MAKE SURE FOLKS AROUND MAUI KNOW THAT ACE IS THE HELPFUL PLACE - AND THIS YEAR THEY CELEBRATE 40 YEARS AT 334 ALAMAHA STREET IN KAHULUI. DESIPITE SEEING THE BIG BOX STORES AND CHAINS COME AND GO, MARMAC ACE HAS ALWAYS HAD A PRETTY STEADY STREAM OF CUSTOMERS FLOWING INTO THE STORE. AND THE BOSS HAS JUST ONE RULE.

Bill Marrs, Co-Founder, Marmac Ace Hardware

BM01: "Basically our philosophy is very simple. Everyone who works here is a part of our family. All I ask is that you treat everyone who walks through those front doors like you like to be treated.// I tell people we have a great hardware store - but we're in the people business."

AND THE PEOPLE PLEASIN PORTION OF THE BUSINESS EXTENDS BEYOND THEIR DOORS. BIL AND WIFE MAUREEN MARRS HAVE 17 GRANDCHILDREN HERE ON MAUI SO THEY SPONSOR - AND ATTEND A LOT OF LITTLE LEAGUE, SOCCER GAMES, AND OTHER FUN EVENTS. MAUREEN IS ALSO A HONORED VOLUNTEER AND AN EXTREMELY TALENTED DECORATOR WHOSE CHRISTMAS STORE OCCUPIED THE CORNER OF THE MARMAC COMPLEX FOR MORE A QUARTER CENTURY.

Maureen Marrs, Co-Owner, Marmac Ace Hardware

MM01: "We had the Christmas store here for 27 years and then we got tired of Christmas - so we decided to turn it into a kitchen and home store and now we carry just about every kitchen gadget you can imagine."

AND SOME THAT DEFY IMAGINATION LIKE MAUREEN'S FAVORITE, THE GARLIC ZOOM. THERE ARE TOUCHES OF MAUREEN MARRS CHRISTMAS MAGIC AROUND THE NEW SHOP AND THERE WILL BE MORE LATER THIS YEAR - AND THERE'S A SNAPPY NEW SIGN OUT FRONT.

IF YOU'RE AMONG THE THOUSANDS WHO'VE SHOPPED AT MARC ACE HARDWARE ACROSS THE PAST FOUR DECADES YOU KNOW ABOUT THE FRIENDLY STAFF, THE INDIAN...THE INCREDIBLE SELECTION AND THE SUPER DEALS AND BILL CAN TELL EXACTLY WHERE TO FIND WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR, RIGHT?

BM02: "Absolutely not. Everytime I go down they keep moving things. We're constantly updating - upgrading. We have department heads that run my garden department department, the tool department...

AND THEY CAN TELL YOU WHERE THE MOSQUITO ZAPPER, THE BACK BRACE AND THE STRAW HATS ARE - AND, BILL SAYS - OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS MORE THAN ONCE A MEMBER OF HIS STAFF HAS HELPED A CUSTOMER WITH THEIR PROJECT AFTER THE STORE CLOSES.

THEY OFFER DISCOUNTS TO ALL SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN AND TO SENIOR CITIZENS - AND AS PART OF GOT CHOICE THINK LOCAL, DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE COUPON AND BRING IT IN TO MARMAC ACE HARDWARE FOR 20 PERCENT OFF ALL POWER TOOLS! AND IT'S TOUGH STAY TOE-TO-TOE WITH THE BIG HARDWARE CHAINS AND BIG BOX STORE THAT HAVE COME AND GONE ON MAUI

bm03: "So our little store's been sitting here for the last 40 years and have gone through all the big hardware stores, Costco, the K-Mart the Wal-Mart and now Lowe's and Home Depot. We just keep doing what we do - we're not going anywhere."

AND HE SAYS A DAY DOESN'T GO BY THAT HE DOESN'T KNOW THAT IT'S LOCAL PEOPLE - SHOPPING LOCALLY - KEEPIN THE MONEY ON MAUI AND KEEPING SMALL BUSINESS IN BUSINESS ON MAUI. SO, WHEN YOU NEED - JUST ABOUT ANYTHING - THERE'S A REAL GOOD CHANCE YOU'LL FIND IT HERE. AND "HERE IS THE BEST PART BECAUSE WE GET TO LIVE HERE. SO WHEN YOU GOT CHOICE, THINK LOCAL.

(ON-CAM TAG) BROWSE AMONG SOME 200 MAUI COUNTY BUSINESSES AND FIND SOME GREAT DEALS. JUST GO TO MAUI COUNTY THINK LOCAL DOT COM.

(KANAHA CHANGE)(PiP-DLNR LOGO)

J: WE GOT PHONE CALLS AT MAUI TV NEWS EARLY SUNDAY FROM VIEWERS WHO THOUGH KANAHA POND IN NORTH MAUI WAS BEING SEALED OFF.

(FF-CG-VO) THE PARK IS ONE OF MAUI'S MOST SCENIC WETLANDS AND IS HOME TO ENDANGERED A'EO AS WELL AS SCARCE BIRDS LIKE THE KOLOA MAOLI, THE HAWAIIAN DUCK. THE PARK IS OPEN FROM NOW UNTIL MARCH 31ST FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET. AND YOU NO LONGER NEED TO GET A STATE PERMIT TO VISIT THE INNER SECTIONS OF THE PARK.

(ON-CAM) IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ THE RULES, OR LEARN ABOUT ANOTHER INCREDIBLE PLACE YOU HAVEN'T BEEN YET ON MAUI - FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES AT MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM.

(RED CROSS-PREPAREDNESS MONTH)(PiP-RED CROSS LOGO)

J: SEPTEMBER 20-10 IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH. NOW WHILE THAT CAN SOUND A BIT DAUNTING BECAUSE HOW CAN YOU PREPARE FOR EVERYTHING - THE RED CROSS HAS NARROWED THEIR SUGGESTION DOWN TO ONE: PREPARE FOR DISASTER.

(VO) IT MAY BE BEAUTIFUL RIGHT NOW, BUT WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF HURRICANE SEASON. AND AFTER THAT - HOPEFULLY - WILL BE THE RAINY SEASON. A RECENT RED CROSS SURVEY SAYS THAT FEWER THAN HALF OF ALL AMERICANS HAVE A DISASTER PLAN. THAT PLAN SHOULD BE BASED ON THREE THINGS: 1. BUILD AN EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS KIT. 2 MAKE A PLAN FOR YOUR FAMILY TO FOLLOW SHOULD DISASTER STRIKE AND, 3, KNOW WHAT COULD GO WRONG AND WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE IN YOUR COMMUNITY.

(ON-CAM) FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU LIVE IN KAHULUI, KIHEI OR LAHAINA, TSUNAMIS AND STORM SURGES ARE A CONSTANT POSSIBILITY. DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO THE NEAREST SHELTER? IS THERE A SHELTER NEAR YOU? IF YOU LIVE UPCOUNTRY, HEAVY RAINS CAN CAUSE SLIDES THAT BLOCK ROADS. DO YOU ENOUGH FOOD ON HAND IF YOU GET STUCK? AND OF COURSE, PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE IS AT RISK IN THE EVENT OF FIRE.

THE RED CROSS OFFERS LOW-COST EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS ITEMS AS WELL AS TRAINING IN FIRST AID AND C-P-R. TO DOWNLOAD A FAMILY CHECKLIST AND BUILD, OR REBUILD YOUR EMERGENCY KIT, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(B-TOSS-C)

J: UP NEXT IN SPORTS, THE BALDWIN BEARS ARE ABOUT TO GET SOME NEW GRASS STAINS. DETAILS UP NEXT, AND - IN CURTAIN CALL - PAUL JANES BROWN GETS UP CLOSE WITH FOUR FEMALE ARTISTS WHO WORK AT TURNING SPIRIT INTO FORM. THAT, PLUS COMING ATTRACTIONS AND MORE WHEN WE COME BACK.

(C-BLOCK)

J: CHECKING SPORTS, IT WAS AN UP AND DOWN WEEKEND FOR HAWAI'I SPORTS STARS COMING OUT AT THE TOP OF HER GAME, MICHELE WIE WON JUST HER SECOND FIRST PLACE FINISH IN A MAJOR AT THE CANADIAN WOMEN'S OPEN - BUT ALL THOSE RUNNER-UP TITLES HAVE PAID OFF. MICHELLE WIE IS NOW THE SEVENTH HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN TOUR INNINGS THIS YEAR. AND HILO'S B.J. PENN WENT DOWN - MOSTLY IN A HEAP - FOR THE SECOND TIME TO ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE HOLDER FRANKIE EDGAR. THE BIGGEST COMEBACK OF THE WEEKEND TURNED OUT TO BE THE BIGGEST HEARTBREAK WHEN THE WAIPIO ALL STARS FROM O'AHU SWEPT ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE LOSERS BRACKET TO STAKE THEIR CLAIM ON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. BUT IT WAS NOT TO BE, AND TOKYO TOOK HOME THE TITLE OF LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD CHAMPIONS AT SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, P.A.

MEANWHILE BACK IN PARADISE, THE BALDWIN BEARS ARE THE ONLY UNTESTED MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE FOOTBALL TEAM LEFT - AND THAT WILL CHANGE SATURDAY NIGHT. THE BEARS WILL FACE KING KEKAULIKE AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. KICKOFF IS AT 7 P.M.

(CURTAIN CALL)(PiP - PJB)

J: VIEWPOINTS GALLERY IN MAKAWO OPENED A SHOW LAST SATURDAY ENTITLED MAI KA `UHANE I KA KINE – FROM SPIRIT INTO FORM FEATURING FOUR FEMALE ARTISTS. PAUL JANES-BROWN TOOK IN THE OPENING AND HAS THIS REVIEW…

PJB: THE FIRST THING THAT ONE NOTICES ABOUT THIS SHOW IS HOW COHESIVE IT IS. NOTHING SEEMS OUT OF PLACE, EVERYTHING GOES TOGETHER PERFECTLY, THE SHAPES THE SIZES, THE COLORS ALL WORK. IT’S AS IF THE ARTISTS, ALL OF WHOM WORKED INDEPENDENTLY, WERE COMMUNICATING ON ANOTHER LEVEL. HENCE THE TITLE OF THE SHOW, FROM SPIRIT INTO FORM IS A LITTLE SPOOKY.

WHILE THERE IS THIS COHESIVENESS ABOUT THE SHOW, THERE IS DISTINCT INDIVIDUALITY IN THE ARTISTS. EACH ONE REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT MEDIA AND THE RANGE IS QUITE BROAD. IT INCLUDES A PAINTER, A POTTER, A QUILTER AND A BEADER.

INTERESTINGLY, THE ARTIST WHOSE MEDIA IS THE MOST COMMON, PAINTING. DISPLAYS THE BROADEST RANGE. BETH MARSIL WHO IS WELL-KNOWN FOR HER HAWAIIAN SCENES, KOI FISH AND MIXED MEDIA. IS SHOWING SOME WORK WHICH DISPLAYS THREE DIFFERENT STYLES, ONE OF WHICH IS A DEPARTURE FROM EVERYTHING SHE HAS PREVIOUSLY DONE. THERE ARE ALMOST PHOTOGRAPHIC ACRYLICS OF AFRICAN AND HAWAIIAN SCENES, THEN THERE IS A SERIES OF MIXED MEDIA ABSTRACTS. WHILE THERE IS A CLEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE, EACH ONE STANDS BY ITSELF. THE SHADOW BOX, BASED ON A WOMEN’S JOURNALING CLASS MARSIL IS TEACHING IS ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTING IN THIS GROUP.

THEN WE COME TO THE DEPARTURE FOR MARSIL INTO THE WORLD OF TEXTURE. SHE HAS TWO ARBOREAL SCENES THAT SHE HAS LAYERED USING ACRYLIC GEL AND A TROWEL, THEN WHEN THE TEXTURE IS SETTING UP SHE USES STAMPS AND OILS. THE PAINTING APPEARS TO BE IN MOTION AS IF IT WERE BEING VIEWED UNDERWATER. AT THE SAME TIME THE TEXTURE BRINGS OUT THE BARK ON THE TREES AND MAKES THEM APPEAR AS IF YOU COULD RUB AGAINST THEM. THE LIGHT IN THE PAINTING ALSO IS QUITE EXCEPTIONAL. ONE OF THE SCENES LOOKS LIKE IT CAME FROM THE COEN BROTHER’S FILM MILLER’S CROSSING. THE ARTIST ASSURED ME SHE HAD NEVER SEEN THE FILM.

THE BEADER, RONA SMITH IS A NEW ARTIST TO ME BUT HER PRESENTATION OF SEMI PRECIOUS STONES AND BEADS WITH BUDDHAS ON BLACK VELVET IS PURE ELEGANCE. THE ARTIST REVEALED THAT THE IMAGES INCLUDING THEIR SETTINGS COME TO HER EITHER PRIOR TO OR JUST AFTER MEDITATION. IT IS CLEAR THIS WORK IS CERTAINLY DIVINELY INSPIRED. SHE ALSO HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR ABOUT HER WORKS AS WITNESSED BY HER SHIFT KEY BUDDHA. AT THE OPENING JOELLE PERZ WAS WEARING ONE OF SMITH’S PIECES, YOU SEE SMITH’S ART CAN WORK JUST AS WELL AS JEWELRY OR AS A FRAMED WORK TO BE PURELY ADMIRED, ANYWAY PERZ CONFUSED THE GUESTS WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS THE ARTIST.

DIANNA GRUNDHAUSER, LOVES TO SEW AND HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR TWENTY YEARS, SHE MUST HAVE STARTED WHEN SHE WAS TEN, ANY WAY SHE BECAME A QUILTER BECAUSE SHE WAS SO TALL SHE COULD NEVER MAKE CLOTHES THAT WOULD FIT. HER INSPIRATION IS HER BACK YARD WHICH MUST BE A BOTANICAL GARDEN. SHE SPECIALIZES IN SILK WHICH IS UNUSUAL FOR A QUILTER, BUT WHEN YOU SEE HER WORK, YOU WILL WONDER WHY EVERYONE DOESN’T USE IT. HER FLOWERS AND FRUIT SHIMMER WITH IRIDESCENCE AND GLOW WITH TEXTURE. THEY CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF HER SUBJECTS AND YET ARE CLEARLY WORKS OF ART; MEANT ONLY TO BE APPRECIATED.

FINALLY AYUMI DITAMORE IS MAUI’S MOST UP AND COMING POTTERS A TERM SHE PREFERS. DITAMORE CAME TO MAUI FROM TOKYO IN 1999 AND TOOK HER FIRST POTTING CLASS IN 2003 AND SINCE THAT TIME SHE HAS FOUND HER LIFE’S PASSION. ALTHOUGH SHE USUALLY CREATES FUNCTIONAL, DISH WASHER FRIENDLY PIECES, FOR THIS SHOW SHE HAS VENTURED INTO FINE ART. HER ABSTRACT ANGEL IS AN EXCITING WORK THAT WOULD ENHANCE ANY COLLECTION. SHE ALSO HAS BEEN WORKING ON MONUMENTAL SIZE CLOSED FORMS ALA TOSHIKO TAKEYEZU WITH GREAT SUCCESS. OF COURSE SHE HAS SOME FUNCTIONAL PIECES SUCH AS TEA POTS AND PURELY DECORATIVE WORKS AS WELL. HER PASSION IS CLEAR AND HER SKILL IS GROWING IN PROPORTION TO HER PASSION. WATCH THIS WOMAN, AND GET HER WORK NOW BECAUSE PRETTY SOON IT WILL BE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE.

THE SHOW RUNS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 21ST IT’S WORTH A TRIP UPCOUNTRY TO SEE THIS EXCEPTIONAL WORK AND WHILE YOU’RE THERE YOU CAN LUNCH OR BREAKFAST AT ONE OF MAUI’S BEST RESTAURANTS MARKET FRESH BISTRO. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHOW GO TO MAUI TV NEWS .COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO COMING ATTRACTIONS.

THAT’S CURTAIN CALL FOR THIS WEEK, I’M PAUL JANES BROWN A HUI HOU, AND GO OUT AND SUPPORT MAUI ARTISTS SEE A SHOW. STAY TUNED FOR COMING ATTRACTIONS RIGHT AFTER THESE MESSAGES.
