(Headlines - VO)

A. J: ALL DROPPED OFF AND NO PLACE TO GO. CARS STRANDED ON MAUI BY THE SUPERFERRY BAN SIT IN LOCKUP...AND IN LIMBO.

JY: COMBINE EDUCATION AND IMAGINATION WITH THE INSPIRATION OF THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP AND YOU GET THE 15TH ANNUAL MAUI WRITERS CONFERENCE. WE’LL TAKE YOU THERE.

J: AND THERE MAY BE NO NATURAL OR MAN-MADE CRISIS AFFECTING US TODAY, BUT HOW PREPARED ARE WE IF - OR WHEN - A CATASTROPHE DOES HIT MAUI?

JY: IN SPORTS, THE M-I-L WRAPPED UP THE FOOTBALL PRESEASON THIS WEEK. KALAPANA WILL HAVE HIGHLIGHTS IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

J: AND WE'LL SHOW YOU JUST HOW TOUGH LIFE CAN BE FOR OUR OWN JULIE Y AS SHE SINGLE-HANDEDLY TAKES ON THE PIRATES OF THE CUISINE. THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE. MAHALO FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. WHILE LAWYERS HAGGLE AND JUDGES DECIDE, THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY SITS.

(turn to cam)(PiP: SUPERFERRY)

BUT IT'S NOT THE ONLY THING SITTING. FOR NEARLY TWO WEEKS, SOME FIVE DOZEN CARS - FROM O'AHU - HAVE BEEN STRANDED ON MAUI.

(vo) THE LOT DESIGNED AS A STAGING AND INSPECTION AREA FOR CARS AND TRUCKS ABOUT TO LOAD ON THE SUPERFERRY FOR MAUI DEPARTURES HAS BECOME AN IMPROMPTU STORAGE YARD FOR MORE THAN 50 CARS AND TRUCKS. AFTER MAUI'S SECOND CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE JOSEPH CARDOZA REFUSED TO LIFT THE TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER BARRING THE SUPERFERRY FROM KAHULUI UNTIL AT LEAST TODAY, SUPERFERRY OFFICIALS HAVE TO MAKE GOOD ON THEIR PROMISE TO REUNITE THESE VEHICLES WITH THEIR OWNERS. AS OF THREE DAYS AGO, THEIR OPTIONS INCLUDED HIRING YOUNG BROTHERS TO SHIP THE VEHICLES BACK TO O'AHU - WHICH COULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS - OR JUDGE CARDOZA, WITH A FEW DAYS'S NOTICE, MIGHT ALLOW THE SUPERFERRY ONE QUICK TRIP TO LOAD AND RETURN THE CARS FROM MAUI TO O'AHU.

(ON-CAM) THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE "WHAT IFS" IN THE GROWING LIST OF "SUPER-QUESTIONS." ANOTHER IS WHETHER OR NOT THE TEMPORARY ORDER COULD BECOME A SEMI-PERMANENT ORDER WHILE THE JUDGE CONSIDERS THE NEXT STEP IN WHAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW MUST BE DONE. AND STILL ANOTHER QUESTION IS - IF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT IS ORDERED - SHOULD THE SUPERFERRY BE ALLOWED TO CONDUCT BUSINESS UNTIL INITIAL ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES ARE DONE? AND THERE'S EVEN ANOTHER QUESTION, WHAT WOULD THE MANAGEMENT OF KAHULUI HARBOR DO IF THE SUPERFERRY WERE ALLOWED TO RETURN, ONLY TO FIND THE WATER CLUTTERED WITH PROTESTERS - AS HAPPENED ON KAUA'I?

(SOT) Steve Pfister "I'd be calling the Coast Guard. That's their responsibility to make sure the channel was free. And of course I'd be calling the ship, too and I'd call my boss in Honolulu and say 'look, here's the situation.' If it looked like it was getting out of hand I would expect that the Superferry would not come in."

THE MAUI DISTRICT HARBOR MANAGER SAID HE HAS ALWAYS HAD GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH KAYAK AND CANOE OPERATORS AND WOULDN'T EXPECT THAT TO CHANGE. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER PROTESTERS?

(sot) SP01: " I would expect protesters, peacefully protesting the ferry at Pu'unene and Ka'ahumanu Avenue and at the beach park and wherever it's legal to protest. That's what I would expect."

(PARKS)(PiP-Haleakala)

C. J: WHEN MOTHER NATURE CLOSES A TRAIL, SHE OPENS A PARK. THERE ARE SOME SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TAKING PLACE ON HALEAKALA THAT CAMPERS AND PARK USERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. FIRST THE GOOD NEWS.

(VO) THE KULA FOREST RESERVE REOPENED TO HIKERS AND CAMPERS THIS WEEK. AFTER JANUARY'S DEVASTATING WILDFIRES THAT CONSUMED MORE THAN 23-HUNDRED ACRES, THE PARK RE-OPENED IN JULY, ONLY TO SHUT DOWN AGAIN AFTER JUST A FEW DAYS WHEN FIRES ERUPTED THAT HAD BEEN SMOLDERING UNDERGROUND SINCE THE ORIGINAL BLAZE.

(on-cam) THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES ASKS PARK USERS TO - PLEASE - STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE TO BURNED AREAS, THE ECOSYSTEM IS EXTREMELY FRAGILE AND REPAIRS DEPEND ON THE PUBLIC'S COOPERATION. THE ORIGINAL FIRE TOTALLY DESTROYED 15-HUNDRED ACRES OF FOREST, AND DLNR CREWS REMOVED AN ADDITION 800 TREES THAT WERE TOO DAMAGED TO LEAVE STANDING. REPLANTING OF MOSTLY NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS IS WELL UNDERWAY, AS IS A PROJECT TO REPLACE CATTLE FENCING DESTROYED BY THE ORIGINAL FIRE.

(FF-CG-VO) MEANWHILE A LITTLE FARTHER UP THE MOUNTAIN, INSIDE HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, THE HALEMAU'U TRAIL HEAD IS CLOSED UNTIL CHRISTMAS DAY. THE PARKING AREA IS LOCATED JUST INSIDE THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE PARK, JUST PAST THE TURN-OFF TO HOSMER'S GROVE. ROAD CREWS WILL BE STABILIZING THE ROADBED OUTSIDE THE PARKING LOT AND TRAILHEAD, SO HIKERS AND MOTORISTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED IN THAT AREA. HIKERS CAN ACCESS THE HALEAKALA WILDERNESS AND HOLUA CABIN VIA THE SUMMIT SUPPLY TRAIL. BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT WILL ADD AND ADDITIONAL ONE-AND-A-HALF MILES TO YOUR HIKE, AS WELL AS A ONE-THOUSAND FOOT ELEVATION CHANGE.

(oncam tag) BACK ON THE GOOD NEWS SIDE, ADMISSION TO HALEAKALA AND TO ALL NATIONAL PARKS WILL BE FREE FOR ONE DAY, ON SEPTEMBER 29TH, TO COMMEMORATE NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY. IN ADDITION TO WAIVING ADMISSION FEES FOR THAT DAY, THERE WILL ALSO BE SPECIAL PROGRAMS TO COMMEMORATE THE 14TH ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF THE DAY.

(FF-CG-VO) INCIDENTALLY, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, THERE ARE EIGHT NATIONAL PARKS IN HAWAII, INCLUDING TWO IN MAUI COUNTY, FOUR ON THE BIG ISLAND AND ONE ON O'AHU.

(MWC) (PiP-Maui Writers)

D. JY: "AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER." THAT'S THE WAY COUNTLESS FAIRY TALES HAVE ENDED OVER THE CENTURIES...AND THE WAY ASPIRING AUTHORS WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEIR CAREERS PROGRESS. THAT'S THE GOAL OF THE MAUI WRITERS CONFERENCE AS WELL. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WAS IN WAILEA THIS WEEK LOOKING FOR HAPPY ENDINGS.

(Take MWC pkg)

(on-camtag) THIS YEAR WAS THE 15TH OBSERVANCE OF WHAT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE NUMBER ONE WRITERS CONFERENCE IN THE WORLD. MORE THAN 700 ATTENDEES WERE TREATED TO CLASSES, SPEECHES AND PRESENTATIONS BY A STELLAR LINEUP OF NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLERS, WINNERS OF ACADEMY AWARDS AND PULITZER PRIZE WINNER, W.S. MERWIN. THE CONFERENCE HAS BECOME A MAJOR ANNUAL EVENT ON MAUI, HELD LABOR DAY WEEKEND EACH YEAR IN WAILEA.

(water meters)(PiPWaterMeter)

E. J: THERE ARE 35-THOUSAND WATER METERS ON MAUI AND MOLOKAI, AND BETWEEN NOW AND NEXT MARCH EVERY ONE OF THEM WILL BE UPGRADED. THE MAUI COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF WATER SUPPLY HAS AWARDED A CONTRACT TO PACIFIC METER SERVICES TO UPGRADE THE TRANSPONDER IN EACH METER, AS WELL AS MAPPING THE LOCATIONS OF EVERY METER USING GPS TECHNOLOGY. THE TRANSPONDER IS THE DEVICE THAT ALLOWS THE METER READER TO DOWNLOAD USAGE INFORMATION FROM YOUR METER USING A PORTABLE COMPUTER DEVICE, REMOTELY CONTROLLED FROM THE COUNTY VEHICLE.

ALL PACIFIC METER EMPLOYEES WILL BE WEARING LIME GREEN REFLECTIVE VESTS WITH THE PACIFIC METER SERVICES LOGO ON THE BACK. THEY'LL ALSO BE WEARING A BADGE WITH ID INFORMATION AND A TOLL-FREE NUMBER IN CASE CUSTOMERS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, CONCERNS, OR DOUBTS. THE UPGRADE IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE 10 TO 15 MINUTES PER WATER METER AND WORK ACROSS MAUI AND MOLOKAI - STARTING IN LAHAINA ANY DAY - IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT SEVEN MONTHS, AT A COST OF 3.8 MILLION DOLLARS, OR APPROXIMATELY 108 DOLLARS PER WATER METER.

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

F. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, TWO CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANES MENACE THE CARIBBEAN LESS THAN A WEEK APART. MAUI - AND ALL OF HAWAII - HAVE HAD A CLOSE CALL ALREADY THIS SEASON - AND CIVIL DEFENSE EXPERTS SAY WE'RE NOT PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONE.

JY: AFTER A ONE-WEEK BREATHER, AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS FROM OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE ISLAND ARE UP FOR GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC REVIEW THIS WEEK.

J: AND WE'LL HAVE A RECAP ON ONE OF THE WEST SIDE'S LONGEST-RUNNING - AND MOST CREATIVE FUND-RAISING EVENTS. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(break)

(b block)

(DisasterPrep)(PiP-flossie)

G. JY: YOU CAN BLAME IT ON GLOBAL WARMING OR LA NINA, BUT WHATEVER THE REASON, HURRICANES ACROSS THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE THIS YEAR ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN THOSE A DECADE AGO. EVEN HAWAII NARROWLY MISSED A DIRECT HIT FROM A CATEGORY FOUR STORM JUST LAST MONTH. BUT YOU CAN ONLY BLAME YOURSELF IF THE STORM COMES AND YOU'RE NOT READY. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING TAKES US TO CIVIL DEFENSE HEADQUARTERS.

(Take DisasterPrepPkg)

(pIRATES)(PiP-Pirates)

H. J: HOW TOUGH CAN IT BE TO BE A "COMING ATTRACTIONS" REPORTER ON MAUI TV NEWS? OUR OWN JULIE Y, IN ADDITION TO HER GRUELING "DAY JOB" AT THE OLD LAHAINA LUAU, IS OFTEN FORCED TO DRESS UP, ATTEND EXTREMELY FUN EVENTS AND...WELL, LET HER SHOW YOU. HERE'S JULIE Y, SINGLE HANDEDLY TAKING ON...PIRATES.

(TaKE PIRATES Pkg)

(on-cam tag) AND NOW WE HAVE THE ANSWER THAT BURNING QUESTION. STAY TUNED. LATER ON MAUI TV NEWS, JULIE Y WILL HAVE THE DETAILS ON HER CONTINUING QUEST FOR FUN.

(Honuaula)(PiP-Honuaula)

I. JY: BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE WORDS "HONUA'ULA" AND "WAILEA 670" HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE HEADLINES FOR NEARLY TWO WEEKS. THAT'S ABOUT TO CHANGE.

(vo) THE MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL TABLED THE DISCUSSION OF THE LAND USE COMMITTEE ON THE PROPOSED SOUTH MAUI PROJECT LATE LAST MONTH AFTER COUNCIL MEMBERS MICHELLE ANDERSON, JOANNE JOHNSON AND MIKE VICTORINO REQUESTED YET ANOTHER PUBLIC HEARING ON THE THORNY ISSUE. THEIR REASON? DESPITE NEARLY 30 HOURS OF MEETINGS AND PUBLIC TESTIMONY ALREADY HEARD, THEY FELT SOME RESIDENTS OF SOUTH MAUI WERE DENIED THEIR OPPORTUNITY TO TESTIFY BECAUSE ALL THE MEETINGS HAVE BEEN HELD DURING THE DAY IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS IN WAILUKU. THEIR ANSWER? ONE MORE PUBLIC MEETING - AT LEAST - WILL BE HELD FOR THE PUBLIC TO SPEAK THEIR MIND ON HONUA'ULA BEGINNING AT 6 P.M. MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH AT THE KIHEI COMMUNITY CENTER. IF THERE ARE STILL CITIZENS WHO WANT TO TESTIFY, THE MEETING WILL BE CONTINUED TO FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH.

(ONCAM) ALSO THIS WEEK, MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL'S LAND USE COMMITTEE CONDUCTED A SITE INSPECTION OF THE PROPERTY WHERE THE PROPOSED PULELEHUA HOUSING PROJECT WOULD BE BUILT ADJACENT TO THE KAPALUA WEST MAUI AIRPORT. LAND OWNERS AND DEVELOPERS - MAUI LAND AND PINEAPPLE ARE SEEKING A ZONING CHANGE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MIX OF HOMES, INCLUDING AT LEAST FIFTY-ONE PER CENT CLASSIFIED AS AFFORDABLE.

(Toss to C-BlocK)(2-Shot)

J. J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS, THE M-I-L FOOTBALL PRE-SEASON WRAPPED UP THIS WEEK WHEN CALIFORNIA CAME TO TOWN. KALAPANA HAS HIGHLIGHTS UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK RIGHT AFTER THAT WITH A RUNDOWN OF VERY FUN THINGS TO DO...INCLUDING DETAILS ON THE TASTE OF LAHAINA AND THE BEST OF ISLAND MUSIC.

J: AND A LITTLE LATER, WE'LL TAKE YOU TO KIHEI TO SHARE SOME OF THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE FINAL OBON FESTIVAL, INCLUDING THE POWER OF TAIKO DRUMMING. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

K. K. WELCOME TO THE BIG TIME! ALOHA EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA.

IT MAY BE ONE OF THOSE "BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR" THINGS, BUT NA ALII OF KING KEKAULIKE JUST WRAPPED UP A TWO-WEEK LESSON IN "MOVIN' ON UP." AFTER MAKING HISTORY LAST YEAR BY BECOMING THE FIRST-EVER NEIGHBOR ISLAND SCHOOL TO WIN THE STATE DIVISION TWO TITLE IN VARSITY FOOTBALL, NA ALII HAVE NOW MOVED UP TO THE RANKS OF DIVISION ONE.

IT'S TOUGH WHEN YOU GO FROM BEING THE BIG MEN ON CAMPUS LAST YEAR TO BEING THE ROOKIES IN THE BIG LEAGUES THIS YEAR, BUT NA ALII LEARNED A THING OR TWO IN PRE-SEASON AS THEY PREPARE TO OPEN THEIR M-I-L SEASON THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AGAINST THE SABERS OF MAUI HIGH.

(vo) LAST FRIDAY, UNDER THE LIGHTS UPCOUNTRY, NA ALII HOSTED A VERY GOOD CALIFORNIA TEAM IN THE EL CAPITAN VAQUEROS FROM SAN DIEGO. KING K'S DEFENSE WAS QUICK - KNOCKING DOWN THIS ATTEMPTED SHOVEL PASS EARLY IN THE SECOND QUARTER. AND WATCH THE OPEN FIELD PURSUIT BY #1 FOR NA ALII. THE DUDES FROM CALIFORNIA WERE FORMIDABLE, AS EL CAPITAN'S TANNER RUST COMPLETES AN 11-YARD TD PASS TO BRANDON SANCHEZ. NA ALII CAME BACK WITH A LONG DRIVE, INCLUDING ADRAIN DE LA CRUZ ON THIS GAIN. AFTER A PASS INTERFERENCE PENALTY MOVED NA ALII DOWN TO THE 13 YARD LINE, MIKEY DOUGLAS BREAKS NO LESS THAN FIVE TACKLES ON HIS WAY INTO THE END ZONE. HEY MIKEY! THE EXTRA POINT WAS GOOD AS KING K DREW WITHIN A TOUCHDOWN OF EL CAPITAN IN THE SECOND QUARTER.

(on cam) THE VAQUEROS WENT ON TO VANQUISH THE LOCALS, 51 TO 36, BUT NA ALII - WHO LOST THE PREVIOUS WEEK TO AN ALL-STAR ACADEMY TEAM FROM JAPAN - SAY THEY’RE READY TO STEP UP WHEN CALLED UPON TO DO SO! AND THEIR FIRST CHANCE IS AGAINST MAUI HIGH THIS WEEKEND IN WAILUKU.

(PiP-Trojans) AND SPEAKING OF CHALLENGES, THE TROJANS CERTAINLY STEPPED UP LAST WEEK - WINNING THEIR OPENING PRE-SEASON MATCH AGAINST THE TRAPPERS OF FORT MAC-MURRAY CANADA. THIS WEEK, THEY - TOO - FACED A BIG SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TEAM. HOW BIG?

(vo) TRY THREE TIMES AS MANY PLAYERS... FROM CALIFORNIA'S WEST HILLS HIGH. THE GOOD NEWS IS THEY ONLY ALLOW 11 OF THEM ON THE FIELD AT ONCE - AND THAT WASN'T ENOUGH TO STOP TROJAN Q-B ARONNE SANTOS FROM COMPLETING THIS PASS TO BILLY PACHECO FOR A NICE GAIN EARLY IN THE GAME. IT'S PACHECO AGAIN FOR LONG GAINER DOWN THE LEFT SIDE FOR THE TROJANS. WHILE THE CHEERLEADERS CHANTED "DEFENSE, LET'S DO IT!" THE TROJANS DID IT. WATCH NUMBER 25, JORDAN KAHALEKAI-BERMOY, STRIP THE BALL THEN POUNCE ON THE FUMBLE.

BUT THERE WEREN'T TOO MANY MORE HOME TEAM HIGHLIGHTS FOR A WHILE IN THIS ONE. WEST HILLS SCORED EARLY ON THIS 55-YARD RUN BY JOSH RYDER. NUMBER 20 FOR THE WEST HILLS WOLFPACK, CHRISTIAN FONSECA WAS A LOAD TO BRING DOWN. BUT WATCH HOW KAHALEKAI-BERMOY MAKES SURE VISITOR LEVI JACOB KNOWS WHOSE HOUSE THIS IS! DING! (or, maybe, "Couple somebody please answer that phone!") NICE HIT! IT WAS WOLFPACK REVENGE ON THE NEXT PLAY, HOWEVER, WHEN #3 ERIC FIEGE FAKES TROJAN KEITH FLORES OUT OF HIS SOCKS AND SCAMPERS INTO THE END ZONE.

TROJANS BALL AGAIN AND ARONNE SANTOS KEEPS HIS FEET - AND HIS WITS AS HE HITS SEABURY HALL'S CHRIS SUGIDONO FOR A NICE GAIN. A PENALTY MOVES THE TROJANS EVEN CLOSER...BUT NOT QUITE CLOSE ENOUGH AS THOMAS CORTEZ'S FIELD GOAL TRY FALLS JUST INCHES SHORT. THE WOLFPACK WENT ON TO WIN THIS ONE 37 TO 16.

(ff-VO-CG) HERE'S HOW THE SECOND - AND FINAL - WEEK OF PRESEASON WENT FOR M-I-L TEAMS. THE TROJANS FALL TO ONE-AND-ONE WITH THEIR LOSS TO WEST HILLS. ALSO ON SATURDAY, MAUI HIGH GRABBED A LATE-GAME SAFETY TO AVOID THE SHUTOUT, BUT LOST TO THE BISHOPS FROM CALIFORNIA, 44 TO TWO. IN FRIDAY NIGHT'S MATCHUPS, LAHAINALUNA REMAINED PERFECT IN THE PRE-SEASON, DOWNING SO-CAL'S BONITA VISTA 30 TO SEVEN. IT WAS NA ALII LOSING TO EL CAPITAN 51 TO 36. AND IN PUKALANAI, THE WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA MAUI FELL TO VALLEY CENTER HIGH FROM CALIFORNIA, 36 TO NOTHING. THURSDAY NIGHT'S MATCHUP BETWEEN THE BALDWIN BEARS AND THE SAN CLEMENTE TRITONS SAW THE BEARS LOSE AT WAR MEMORIAL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY THREE YEARS.

(FF-VO-CG) IT ALL STARTS FOR REAL THIS WEEKEND FOR THE MIL. FRIDAY NIGHT THE WARRIORS HOST THE TROJANS. SATURDAY NIGHT PITS THE SABERS AGAINST NA ALII AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. NEXT WEEK'S SEASON OPENERS WILL SEE THE LUNAS TAKE ON KAMEHAMEHA MAUI AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM ON FRIDAY. AND, SAME TIME, SAME PLACE, SATURDAY BALDWIN OPENS ITS SEASON AGAINST MAUI HIGH.

(PiP-Victorina-Suzuki)
(on cam) A COUPLE OF FORMER M-I-L STANDOUTS CONTINUE TO MAKE THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. (ff-vo-cg) NINETEEN NINETY-NINE SAINT ANTHONY'S GRADUATE SHANE VICTORINO WRAPPED UP THE MONTH OF AUGUST BACK AT WORK, AFTER SPENDING A FEW DAYS ON THE DISABLED LIST. VICTORINO CLOSED THE MONTH WITH AN OVERALL BATTING AVERAGE OF 286 FOR THE SEASON WITH ELEVEN HOME RUNS, 44 R-B-Is...A TOTAL OF 75 RUNS, AND 34 STOLEN BASES - NINTH BEST IN THE MAJORS. ON DEFENSE, WITH TEN ASSISTS, VICTORINO IS FIFTH IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OUTFIELD.

MAUI'S OTHER NATIVE SON, KURT SUZUKI, ACTIVATED BY THE OAKLAND A'S JUST BEFORE THE ALL-STAR BREAK, IS BATTING 259, WITH FIVE HOMERS AND TWO DOUBLES SO FAR. HE HAS 22 R-B-Is TO HIS CREDIT SINCE BEING CALLED UP ON JUNE TENTH. THE 23-YEAR-OLD WAILUKU NATIVE IS TOOK OVER THE FULLTIME CATCHER'S POSITION FOR THE A'S IN JULY.

(on cam) THAT'S A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS THIS WEEK. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. LET US KNOW - AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR TEAM'S UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS.
