A. J: THEY'RE HOME. CARS AND TRUCKS STRANDED ON OAHU RETURN TO MAUI AND VICE VERSA. BUT A COURT STILL HAS TO DECIDE IF THERE'S A HAPPY HOMECOMING FOR THE SUPERFERRY ANYWHERE IN HAWAII.

JY: A HAPPY HOMECOMING IS THE DREAM OF BOTH MAUI RESIDENTS WHO WANT A HOME OF THEIR OWN...AND THE DEVELOPERS WHO WANT TO BUILD IT. WE'LL UPDATE YOU ON TWO PENDING HOUSING PROJECTS FROM OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE ISLAND.

J: LAST WEEK WE SHOWED YOU HOW CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICIALS WANT US TO BE PREPARED WHEN NATURE STRIKES. THIS WEEK WE'LL SHOW WHAT'S NEW ON MAUI TO RESPOND TO A MAN-MADE DISASTER.

JY: IN SPORTS, M-I-L FOOTBALL OPENED THE 2007 CAMPAIGN FOR FOUR MAUI TEAMS. WE'LL HAVE HIGHLIGHTS OF FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

J: AND THERE'S AN AMAZING VARIETY OF SHOWS, CONCERTS, EXHIBITS AND - OF COURSE - THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR COMING SOON. JULIE Y WILL HAVE DETAILS. THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE. WELCOME TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. TWENTY-EIGHT SPECIES, THIRTY KNOTS AND THOUSANDS OF PAGES OF LEGAL DOCUMENTS. THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF THE IMPORTANT NUMBERS BEING CONSIDERED BY A MAUI CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE THIS WEEK.

(turn to cam)(PiP: SUPERFERRY)

ABOUT A HUNDRED MAUI AND O'AHU DRIVERS WERE REUNITED WITH THEIR CARS LAST WEEKEND AS THE ALAKAI MADE A SPECIAL TRIP TO MAUI FOR JUST THAT PURPOSE. BUT, AS MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING FOUND OUT, THE SMALL NUMBERS ARE THE ONES BOTH SIDES ARE FOCUSING ON RIGHT NOW.

(take superferry package)

(On cam tag) FOR UPDATES ON THE COURT RULINGS - AND LINKS TO RELATED WEB SITES IN THIS ONGOING STORY, BE SURE TO VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Honuaula)(PiP-Honuaula)

C. J: WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC OF NUMBERS, LOTS OF THEM WERE THROWN AROUND MONDAY NIGHT AT A PACKED HOUSE IN KIHEI WHERE HUNDRESDS GATHERED TO LET THEIR VOICES BE HEARD FOR OR AGAINST THE PROPOSED HONUA'ULA HOUSING PROJECT.

(vo) WHEN MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBER MIKE VICTORINO JOINED IN A REQUEST WITH COUNCIL MEMBERS JOANNE JOHNSON AND MICHELLE ANDERSON TO CALL FOR ANOTHER PUBLIC HEARING ON THE ISSUE, THE DATE WAS SET FOR MONDAY' NIGHT'S PUBLIC TESTIMONY AT THE KIHEI COMMUNITY CENTER. SOME 85 PEOPLE HAD SIGNED UP BEFORE TESTIMONY BEGAN, AND THEY JUST KEPT SIGNING UP. CHARLIE JENCKS REPRESENTS THE OWNERS AND DEVELOPERS OF THE PROJECT DID NOT EXPECT TO BE SURPRISED.

Charlie Jencks, Owners Representative, Honua'ula - CJ01: (16)"I think once we get through tonight's hearing - and if it does run into Friday - I think we'll pretty much know all we need to know about this project. And I think we've pretty much heard it before, but, hey, let's make sure we get all the input we can to get what we need."

A NON-STOP STREAM OF TESTIFIERS FILED UP AND TESTIFIED, AND COUNCIL MEMBERS LISTENED. A FORMER COUNCIL MEMBER WAS ON THE LIST MONDAY NIGHT. WAYNE NISHIKI REPRESENTED SOUTH MAUI FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES, AND WAS THERE WHEN WAILEA 670 WAS FIRST PROPOSED.

Wayne Nishiki, Former Member, Maui County Council - WN01 (34)"This came out on my watch, but the reason for the meeting today is water. And that's a concern that we have. And today that water concern is even multiplied to the point where you and I have to cut back 10 per cent. So this project has no water plan. What are we doing here tonight when the water plan has not been...addressed."

NISHIKI ALSO ECHOED THE SENTIMENTS OF SEVERAL AT THE MICROPHONE WHO OBJECTED TO WHAT THEY BELIEVE TO BE THE LOCATION OF THE PROJECT'S AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPONENT.

WN02 (21)"The other concern I have is they're going to put the affordable housing away from the project. And this - to me - is like a slap in like spitting to the residents of Maui County. All you people who are going to live in the affordable homes can't live in this community."

EMOTIONS RAN HIGH MORE THAN ONCE, BUT THIS VOCAL CROWD DIDN'T SWAY THE POSITION OF THE DEVELOPERS.

CJ02: (28) "Well, I've come a long way. I've been working on this six and a half years. I know it's a good project. We have good solutions to issues. And I think we have a really strong program for affordable housing which is an integral part of the project. So I think on it's merits the project will prevail. I need to stay calm, wade through all of this and get to the finish line.

(add vo copy to reflect whether or not the hearing will be extended to Friday).

(on-cam-tag) HOW LONG WILL THIS ALL TAKE? AFTER TESTIMONY WRAPS UP, AND THE COUNCIL VOTES, THERE WOULD BE AT LEAST TWO MORE PUBLIC MEETINGS BEFORE A SINGLE NAIL WILL BE POUNDED - A PROCESS THAT COULD TAKE ANOTHER YEAR AND A HALF.

(Pulelehua) (PiP-Affordable)

D. JY: THE HAWAIIAN WORD FOR BUTTERFLY IS 'PULELEHUA.' BUT A PLANNED COMMUNITY PROPOSED FOR ACREAGE SURROUNDING THE KAPALUA WEST MAUI AIRPORT IS HAVING A TOUGH TIME GETTING OFF THE GROUND. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING BRINGS US UP TO DATE.

(Take PulelehuaPkg)

(on-cam tag) THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE PULELEHUA COMMUNITY IS ON A 310-ACRE PARCEL THAT WRAPS AROUND THE KAPALUA WEST MAUI AIRPORT. THE PROJECTED PLAN WOULD BUILD 882 HOUSING UNITS AS WELL AS PARKS A SCHOOL AND SOME SHOPPING. AT LEAST 51 PERCENT OF THE HOMES ARE TO BE DESIGNATED AS 'AFFORDABLE.'

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

E. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, DISASTER CAN COME IN MANY FORMS. BUT NOW FIRST RESPONDERS ON MAUI HAVE A SHINY NEW STATE OF THE ART TOOL TO AID IN THEIR ARSENAL OF PREPAREDNESS.

JY: AND IT'S BEEN A WEEK OF EMOTIONS FOR MAUI FIREFIGHTERS, AS THEY PREPARE TO LOSE THEIR BOSS AND AS THEY PAY TRIBUTE TO FALLEN COMRADES FROM 9-11.

J: AND IT WAS EERILY QUIET LAST WEEK AS ONE OF SOUTH MAUI'S LUXURY LANDMARKS SHUT ITS DOORS FOR GOOD. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(hazmat)(PiP-MauiFD logo)

F. J: IT'S BRAND NEW, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND, IN FACT, AND THOSE TRAINED IN HOW TO USE IT HOPE THEY NEVER HAVE TO. A BLESSING WAS HELD LAST FRIDAY TO CHRISTEN THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE MAUI COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT.

(vo) AT THE MAUI COUNTY FIRE HEADQUARTERS IN KAHULUI, A GATHERING OF COUNTY OFFICIALS AND FIREFIGHTERS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET OUT OF THE HOT SUN - ENJOY SOME MUSIC BY ONE OF THEIR OWN, THEN AFTER A FEW INTRODUCTORY SPEECHES - JOINED IN A BLESSING OF THEIR NEW TRUCK - NAMED HALI'IOLA, A NAMES THAT MEANS TO SPREAD PROTECTION OVER LIFE.

WHILE THERE IS EQUIPMENT ON BOARD TO ACTUALLY FIGHT FIRES, THE PURPOSE OF HALI'IOLA IS TO HANDLE HAZARDOUS MATERIAL INCIDENTS ON MAUI.

(Capt Jeff Kihune, Training Capt, MFD) JK01 (16): "WE WILL ASSESS THE SITUATION, TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT KIND OF MATERIAL IT IS AND, IF WE CAN TRY TO DO SOME MITIGATION. THEN WE TRY TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO TAKE TO THE POINT OF CLEANUP. THEN FEDERAL REGULATIONS LIMIT US FROM DOING THAT."

THIS SELF-CONTAINED COMPUTERIZED TRAVELLING LABORATORY FEATURES AN EXPANDING SEALED ROOM WHERE TESTS CAN BE CARRIED OUT. AND, EVEN IN A QUIET PLACE LIKE MAUI, AN APPARATUS LIKE THIS COULD BECOME NECESSARY.

(JK02 (32) "The harbor area is a high hazardous materials area. You've got petroleum products there. They offload propane there. Chlorine's a big thing. Then the hotels and industries out there have some high quantities of real nasty stuff."

THE SPECIALLY OUTFITTED TRUCK IS SO NEW AND UNIQUE THAT'S IT'S MODEL DESIGNATION IS MAUI-ONE.

(On-camTag) FOR ALL THE GOOD THINGS THIS SELF-CONTAINED MOBILE COMMAND POST HAS TO OFFER, GOOD MILEAGE ISN'T ONE OF THEM. CAPTAIN KIHUNE FIGURES THE NEW TRUCK GETS JUST SIX TO EIGHT MILES PER GALLON.

(FireChief Retires)(PiP-Kaupalolo)

G. JY: SHORTLY AFTER THE DEDICATION CEREMONY FRIDAY IN KAHULUI, MAUI COUNTY FIRE CHIEF CARL KAUPALOLO ANNOUNCED THAT HE WOULD RETIRE AT THE END OF THIS YEAR.

(FF-CG-VO) AFTER 32 YEARS WITH THE MAUI COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT, CHIEF KAUPALOLO - A HAIKU NATIVE - SAYS HE WANTS TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH HIS GRANDKIDS BEFORE THEY'RE GROWN AND GONE. HE ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT AT A FIRE AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

(on cam) COMMISSION CHAIRMAN BUTCH SOARES PRAISED THE CHIEF FOR BRINGING THE COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT UP TO DATE IN EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES. MAYOR CHARMAINE TAVARES COMMENDED KAUPLOLO FOR HIS DEDICATION, RISING FROM THE RANKS OF FIREFIGHTER TO THE LEADER OF THE COMPANY OF 315 MEN AND WOMEN ACROSS THREE ISLANDS. THE FIRE AND SAFETY COMMISSION NOW HAS TO GET TO THE TASK OF SELECTING HIS REPLACEMENT.

(9-11 TRIBUTE)(PiP-mfd TRIBUTE)

H. J: HONORING THEIR 343 FALLEN BROTHERS LOST IN THE DEVASTATING EVENTS OF 9-11, MAUI COUNTY FIRE ENGINES AND CREWS ASSEMBLED IN FROM OF FIRE STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTY ON TUESDAY FOR A MOMENT OF SILENS, ACCOMPANIED BY RED LIGHTS FLASHING IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE VALIANT EFFORTS OF ALL THAT HELPED IN THE 2001 TERRORIST ATTACKS IN NEW YORK.

(FF-CG-VO) TO FURTHER HIGHLIGHT THE FIREFIGHTERS RESOLVE TO 'NEVER FORGET' THAT THE ATTACKS TOOK PLACE ON AMERICAN SOIL, AN HONOR GUARD WAS POSTED AT THE KAHULUI FIRE STATION. THE HONOR GUARD, CREATED SEVERAL YEARS AGO BY FIRE CHIEF CARL KAUPALOLO, WAS DRESSED IN THE FIRST KNOWN UNIFORM OF THE COUNTY OF MAUI.

(Renaissance closes) (PiP-Wailea Renaissance)

I. JY: IT WAS ANOTHER 'END OF AN ERA' AS ONE OF THE FIRST LUXURY HOTELS EVER BUILT IN WAILEA SHUT ITS DOORS ONCE AND FOR ALL LAST WEEK.

(vo) THE 345 ROOM RENAISSANCE WAILEA BEACH RESORT, BUILT IN 1978 WILL BE TORN COMPLETELY DOWN BEGINNING IN ABOUT THREE MONTHS. FURNITURE, MARBLE - EVEN LUGGAGE CARTS - WILL BE DISPOSED OF BY LIQUIDATORS, WITH THEIR HUNDREDS OF DISPLACED FORMER EMPLOYEES GETTING FIRST CRACK AT THE ITEMS. HOTEL NAME PLATES WERE THE FIRST TO GO LAST THURSDAY AFTERNOON. IN PLACE OF THE EXISTING RESORT WILL BE A NEW LUXURY COMPLEX OF SUITES - SOME WITH UP TO FOUR BEDROOMS - UNDER THE NAME WAILEA BACCARAT. IT WILL INCLUDE 193 UNITS IN 13 LOW-RISE BUILDINGS. CONSTRUCTION IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETE BY 2010.

(oncam) DEMOLITION OF THE BUILDING WILL BE UNDER CAREFUL SCRUTINY BECAUSE THE BUILDINGS WENT UP NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO, AND THERE'S ASBESTOS IN PARTS OF THE STRUCTURE.

(Toss to C-BlocK)(2-Shot)

J. J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS, THE M-I-L FOOTBALL SEASON OPENED THIS WEEK WITH FOUR TEAMS, TWO GAMES...AND A LOT TO PROVE. THAT AND WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL UP NEXT IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK RIGHT AFTER THAT WITH A RUNDOWN OF VERY FUN THINGS TO DO...INCLUDING DETAILS ON THE TASTE OF LAHAINA AND THE BEST OF ISLAND MUSIC. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(sports) (PiP-Sports)

K. J: IF YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THE TV SHOW "SANFORD AND SON," YOU'LL REMEMBER WHEN FRED WOULD SAY, "THIS IS THE BIG ONE!" WELL THIS WEEKEND IN MIL FOOTBALL...IT WAS! TWICE IN FACT!

ALOHA EVERYONE WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING IN FOR KALAPANA, WHO IS ENJOYING A WELL-DESERVED WEEK OFF.

ALL FOUR TEAMS IN THIS WEEK'S OPENERS OF THE 2007 MIL FOOTBALL CAMPAIGN HAD SOMETHING TO PROVE AND THE RESULTS WERE TWO EXCITING GAMES. LET'S START WITH THE MOST RECENT, PITTING THE NEW KIDS ON THE DIVISION ONE BLOCK AGAINST A TEAM THAT HASN'T BEATEN A DIVISION ONE TEAM IN THREE SEASONS.

(vo) A LARGE AND FESTIVE CROWD AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM SATURDAY SAW A FIRED UP KING KEKAULIKE MAKE IT'S DIVISION ONE DEBUT AGAINST THE MAUI HIGH SABERS. NA ALII DREW FIRST BLOOD WITH A FIELD GOAL TO CAP THEIR FIRST DRIVE. SABERS BALL AND JORDAN INAMASU TARGETS ANDREW PERRY - JUST OUT OF HIS REACH. SO CLOSE, THAT THEY TRIED IT AGAIN ON THE NEXT PLAY. UNFORTUNATELY - SAME RESULT. AFTER A PUNT IT'S A LITTLE NA ALII RAZZLE DAZZLE, CORRY ROY TO TAYLOR RODRIGUES TO KEOLA WILLIAMS WHO PICKS UP NINE AND A FIRST DOWN. THE SABERS HOLD EM AND KING K HAS TO PUNT BUT WATCH THE PURSUIT AS THEY STICK THE SABERS WAY BACK ON THEIR SEVEN YARD LINE.

PLENTY OF ACTION IN THE SECOND QUARTER AS SABER QB JORDAN INAMASU PITCHES TO FULLBACK JOHN ASUNCION FOR A NICE GAIN. THEN INAMASU AIRS IT OUT TO MITCHELL CRIM FOR A PICKUP FOR 40 YARDS. REMEMBER THAT REPETITION THING THE SABERS TRIED EARLIER? THIS TIME - BINGO! CRIM HAULS IT IN DOWN AT THE ONE. NEXT PLAY INAMASU FOLLOWS HIS BLOCKERS INTO THE END ZONE. AND THE SABERS TAKE THE LEAD 6-3.

THE MAUI HIGH BAND WAS IN TUNE AS THE SABERS SCORED AGAIN BUT IT WAS NA ALII WITH SOMETHING TO PROVE SATURDAY NIGHT. HERE CORRY ROY CONNECTS WITH MAURY SAGAWINIT FOR EIGHT YARDS. NEXT IT WAS ROY ON A QB KEEPER FOR 14 MORE. FIELD LEVEL NOW AS NA ALII TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GREAT BLOCKING BY THE FRONT LINE - AND BY MAUI NEWS ACE PHOTOGRAPHER MATTHEW THAYER TO BRING IT DOWN TO THE ONE YARD LINE. MIKEY DOUGLAS TAKES IT IN FOR THE SCORE AS TEMPERS FLARE A BIT FOR THE SABERS, RESULTING IN A PERSONAL FOUL CAL...AND, PROBABLY A PRETTY GOOD YELLING AT COMING UP AT HALF-TIME. THE EXTRA POINT WAS GOOD BRINGING NA ALII WITHIN THREE AT THE HALF.

(on cam) THE SECOND HALF WAS JUST AS EXCITING IN FRONT OF THE CROWD - ESTIMATED AT 15-HUNDRED, AND THE SABERS HAD A CHANCE TO SEND IT INTO OVER TIME LATE IN THE GAME UNTIL THREE INCOMPLETE PASSES HIT THE TURF AS TIME RAN OUT.

(FF-VO-CG) FINAL SCORE, NA ALII 27, SABERS 19. KING K WINS IT'S DEBUT IN DIVISION ONE. THE OTHER MIL SEASON OPENER, ON FRIDAY NIGHT SAW THE WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA MAUI RACK UP AN IMPRESSIVE 411 YARDS AS THEY TO AN IDENTICAL MARGIN OF VICTORY, BEATING THE TROJANS 27-19.

(FF-VO-CG)THE SECOND PAGE OF THE OPENING CHAPTER OF FOOTBALL, 2007, MIL STYLE COMES THIS FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN THE LUNAS VISIT THE WARRIORS AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. SATURDAY NIGHT THE BALDWIN BEARS OPEN THEIR SEASON AGAINST MAUI HIGH.

(on-cam) IT'S NOT JUST THE BOYS WHO WANT TO HAVE FUN. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL IS UNDERWAY IN THE MIL. AND WHILE THE LADY WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA MAUI LOOK TO FOUR-PEAT, THE COMPETITION IS PRETTY GOOD THIS YEAR.

(vo) LAST THURSDAY NIGHT, AT KING KEKAULIKE GYM, KAAHUMANU HOU GAVE NA ALII ALL THEY COULD HANDLE...AND THEN SOME AS THEY WIN THIS LONG RALLY. BUT THE KING K LADIES SERVICE WAS TOO STRONG AS BLAIR HAVRON'S JUMP SERVE SCORES ONCE, TWICE AND LIBERO KELSEY ABELLANIDA DOES THE SAME THING.

(VO-FF-CG) NA ALII WON THIS MATCH IN THREE GAMES. HERE'S THE STANDINGS SO FAR. THE WARRIORS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN DIVISION ONE. (get the results Monday)

(on-cam) AND FINALLY, THE LONG-DISTANCE PADDLING SEASON IS BUILDING TO IT'S CLIMAX. THIS WEEKEND IT'S THE MAUI TO MOLOKAI RACE ON SUNDAY, BUILDING TO NEXT WEEK'S OPENING HALF OF THE WORLD SERIES OF OUTRIGGER CANOE RACING. NA WAHINE O KE KAI WILL SEE WOMEN’S' TEAMS RACE FROM MOLOKAI TO OAHU ON THE 23RD. TWO WEEKS LATER MORE THAN A THOUSAND MEN ARE EXPECTED TO COMPETE IN THE MOLOKAI HOE, RACING 41 MILES ACROSS OPEN OPEN FROM HALE O LONO HARBOR ON MOLOKAI TO DUKE KAHANAMOKU BEACH ON OAHU.

(on cam) THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS THIS WEEK. KALAPANA WILL BE BACK WITH YOU NEXT WEEK. IN THE MEANTIME, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. LET US KNOW - AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR TEAM'S UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS. SEND YOUR NOTICES TO "SPORTS-AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM" AND WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO GET A FILM CREW OUT TO COVER YOUR GAME. FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M KALAPANA. NOW HERE'S JULIE Y WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS.
