(Headlines - VO)

A. J: IT WAS A PUBLIC SESSION SO PEACEFUL, YOU'D THINK EVERYONE WAS ON THE SAME SIDE. BUT VACATION RENTALS ARE AN ISSUE THAT HAS SOME FOLKS STEAMING AND SOME FOLKS SCARED.

JY: A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE COMES TO MAUI. OHIO CONGRESSMAN DENNIS KUCINICH STATES HIS POSITION ON THE ISSUE OF HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY.

J: THE VIEW WAS OK, THE WIND AND SUN WERE RELENTLESS...BUT THE COPS ON TOP STAYED UP THERE FOR NEARLY A HUNDRED HOURS FOR A VERY SPECIAL CAUSE.

JY: IN SPORTS, LAHAINALUNA AND BALDWIN OPENED THEIR 2007 MIL FOOTBALL SEASONS, WHILE THE LADY WARRIORS OF KAMEHAMEHA STRETCH THEIR UNDEFEATED STREAK ON THE VOLLEYBALL COURT. WE'LL HAVE HIGHLIGHTS IN SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS.

J: AND THERE'S AN AMAZING VARIETY OF SHOWS, CONCERTS, EXHIBITS AND - OF COURSE - THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR COMING IN JUST A FEW DAYS. JULIE Y WILL HAVE DETAILS. THAT AND MUCH MORE THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

Open

B. J: ALOHA EVERYONE. WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S EDITION OF MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING.

JY: AND I'M JULIE Y. IT MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO MANY THAT THE TOPIC OF REST AND RELAXATION COULD RESULT IN SUCH A HEATED DEBATE ON MAUI.

(turn to cam)(PiP: TVR)

BUT FOR THOSE WHO ATTENDED A FORUM ON TEMPORARY VACATION RENTALS LAST WEEK, IT LOOKED MORE RESTED AND RELAXED THAN HEATED. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING WAS THERE TO SEE WHAT WAS JUST BENEATH THAT MELLOW ATMOSPHERE.

(take TVR package)

(Kucinich)(PiP-KUCINICH)

C. J: HE'S THE FIRST AND LIKELY ONLY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO VISIT HAWAII THIS YEAR - AND ALMOST CERTAINLY THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL COME TO MAUI. OHIO CONGRESSMAN DENNIS KUCINICH AND HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH WERE ON ISLAND LAST FRIDAY FOR SEVERAL STOPS, INCLUDING A PRESS CONFERENCE.

(vo) THAT PRESS CONFERENCE WAS CARRIED LIVE ON AKAKU, MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION. PRIMARILY IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CONGRESSMAN TO STATE HIS PEACEFUL POSITION ON IRAQ. SPECIFICALLY, THAT THE U.S. MUST LEAVE. HE SAID THAT AMERICA HAS BECOME SEPARATED FROM THE WORLD BUT THE WORLD IS READY TO CONNECT WITH AMERICA. ON A TOPIC MUCH CLOSER TO HOME, THE CONGRESSMAN WAS ASKED HIS POSITION ON THE ISSUE OF HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY.

DK01: "I live in Ohio. To some people that may sound like Hawaii but it's not. I don't want to be in a position of dictating to the people of Hawaii what they should do on this. But I'd want to acknowledge the truth that these islands belong to native people and they were taken from them. That has to be acknowledged. What happens from there - that's what Hawaiians have to decide."

CARRIED A BIT FURTHER, HE TOLD THE AUDIENCE HOW HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HAWAII COULD IMPACT THE NATION

DK02: "A national spirit of Aloha that embraces what Hawaii stands for. The appreciation for nature that comes from Aloha that means peace. So my presidency will be about strength through peace."

(con't vo) AFTER THE PRESS CONFERENCE, MR AND MRS KUCINICH WERE WHISKED TO A WAIEHU FUNDRAISER - ONE OF FIVE EVENTS IN A WHIRLWIND DAY.

(on-cam) WHILE HIS POSITION IN THE NATIONAL POLLS SHOWS HIM A DISTANT RUNNER-UP ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE, MAUI HAS BEEN GOOD TO THE CONGRESSMAN FROM OHIO. IN FACT HE WON THE SECOND DISTRICT IN HAWAII IN THE 2004 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY.

D. JY: AT THE CONCLUSION OF THAT PRESS CONFERENCE, THE PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL WAS ASKED TO MAKE A PROMOTIONAL STATEMENT FOR AKAKU, MAUI COMMUNITY TELEVISION. HIS PITCH:

DK03: "Cleveland Rocks and Akaku Rocks."

(on-cam) IT WAS AKAKU THAT FOUND ITSELF ON THE ROCKS LATE LAST WEEK WHEN SECOND CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE JOSEPH CARDOZA NEARLY BOOTED THE PUBLIC ACCESS CAMERA CREW FROM THE SUPERFERRY PROCEEDINGS IN HIS COURT. SUPERFERRY ATTORNEY LISA MUNGER REPORTED TO CARDOZA THAT - DURING A RECESS IN THE TRIAL - AN ACQUAINTANCE ON OAHU VIEWING THE PROCEEDINGS ONLINE, SAID THAT THE ATTORNEY'S VOICE WAS CLEARLY AUDIBLE. THE JUDGE PULLED UP SHORT OF PULLING THE PLUG ON AKAKU, BUT ORDERED THE COMMUNITY ACCESS CREW TO TURN OFF ALL MICROPHONES DURING RECESSES, AND TO ERASE ANY SUCH AUDIO THAT EXIST IN THE STATIONS WEB ARCHIVES.

(Superferry)(PiP-Superferry)

E. J: MEANWHILE THOSE HEARINGS DRAG ON. SUPERFERRY CEO JOHN GARIBALDI WAS ON THE WITNESS LIST TO START PROCEEDINGS TUESDAY MORNING. GARIBALDI WAS ON BOTH THE PLAINTIFF AND DEFENSE WITNESS LISTS SO IT WAS MERELY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE HE WAS ON THE HOT SEAT.

(take vo. VO will be laid later Tuesday)

(on-cam) JUDGE CARDOZA RULED LAST FRIDAY ON THAT TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER THAT PREVENTED THE ALAKAI FROM RETURNING TO KAHULUI ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE ORDER IS NOW A PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION THAT WILL PREVENT THE ALAKAI FROM OPERATING IN MAUI WATERS BEFORE THIS PARTICULAR HEARING IS COMPLETE.

(vo) (Honuaula) (FILL WITH VO IF THERE IS ANY NEWS ON MONDAY. IF NOT, GO TO TOSS.)

(Tease for B-Block)(2-shot)

F. J: COMING UP NEXT ON MAUI TV NEWS, THEY BAKE IN THE BROILING SUN ALL DAY AND SHIVER THROUGH THE CHILLY NIGHTS ON TOP OF GROCERY STORES...AND THEY WOULDN'T COME DOWN UNTIL SOME SPECIAL PEOPLE WERE SPECIALLY CARED FOR. COPS ON TOP WHEN WE COME BACK.

JY: AND TONS OF CHANGES ARE COMING TO SOUTH MAUI AS CHANNEL DREDGING WILL CONVENIENTLY SUPPLY THE SAND NEEDED FOR A DUNE RESTORATION PROJECT.

J: AND ITS TIME TO CELEBRATE THE NENE. HALEAKALA GETS SET TO HONOR A MOST CHERISHED LOCAL. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(Cop on Top)(PiP-Cop on Top Logo)

G. JY: IT'S APPARENTLY NOT ENOUGH THAT THESE PEOPLE SERVE MAUI COUNTY ALL DAY LONG, WEARING HEAVY DARK UNIFORMS AND BULLET-PROOF VESTS. ONCE A YEAR THEY USE THEIR OWN VACATION TIME TO VOLUNTEER TO SIT OR STAND IN THE BAKING SUN AND ANYTHING ELSE MOTHER NATURE DISHES OUT...TO RAISE MONEY FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS. MAUI TV NEWS REPORTER JEFF KING SCALED THE LADDER SO WE COULD MEET A COUPLE OF THE 'COPS ON TOP.'

(take cops on top pkg)

(On-camTag) NEXT UP FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETES IN MAUI COUNTY IS THE MAUI UNIFIED BOWLING TOURNAMENT AND THE MAUI SINGLES BOWLING TOURNAMENT - BOTH IN OCTOBER. THE NEXT STATEWIDE SPECIAL OLYMPICS COMPETITION IS SET TO BEGIN NOVEMBER 30TH ON O'AHU.

(Dune restore) (PiP-fencing)

H. J: EIGHT YEARS WORTH OF WIND AND WEATHER EROSION ALONG THE DUNES MAKAI OF KAMAOLE BEACH PARK NUMBER THREE IN KIHEI WILL BE ADDRESSED WHEN EIGHT YEARS; WORTH OF SAND BUILD-UP IS DREDGED FROM THE KIHEI SMALL BOAT HARBOR.

(vo) FENCING WENT UP BEGINNING LAST FRIDAY CLOSING OFF THE NORTH END OF KAM-THREE PARK AS THE COUNTY JOINS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES AND SOUTH MAUI HEROES BOB AND LIS RICHARDSON AND THEIR BAND OF INTREPID VOLUNTEERS TO RESTORE THE COASTAL SAND DUNES. THE SAND WILL COME FROM JUST DOWN THE BEACH A WAYS FROM HERE AT THE KIHEI BOAT RAMP. UNOFFICIAL ESTIMATES OF 50-80 TONS OF SAND WILL BE SCOOPED UP BY A CLAMSHELL BARGE AND TRUCKED TO THE NORTH END OF THE PARK, ABOUT A HALF-MILE UP THE ROAD.

(on-cam) THE USE OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT WILL REQUIRE A LARGER SECTION OF THE PARK TO BE CLOSED UNTIL SAND DELIVERY AND SPREADING IS COMPLETE. AFTER THAT, ONLY SMALL SECTIONS OF THE PARK - PROTECTING THE NEWLY PLANTED SEA GRAS AND NATIVE NAUPAKA - WILL BE OFF LIMITS. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE UNTIL AT LEAST THANKSGIVING. IF YOU'D LIKE TO HELP, CALL MARY KELTY OF THE MAUI PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT AT 891-2456.

(Nene Day)(PiP-NeneGraphic)

I. JY: YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN AWARE BEFORE NOW, BUT SEPTEMBER 26 IS NENE AWARENESS DAY, AND HAS BEEN SINCE GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE SIGNED A PROCLAMATION IN 2004 DECLARING THAT DAY TO OUR TO HONOR OUR STATE BIRD.

(FF-CG-VO) NENE ONCE NUMBERED IN THE THOUSANDS AND WERE FOUND ON ALL THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF LOSS OF HABITAT, PREDATION BY INTRODUCED ANIMALS AND OVER-HUNTING, THE POPULATION DWINDLED TO A LOW OF JUST 30 BIRDS BY 1950 - AND ALL OF THOSE WERE ON THE BIG ISLAND.

(on-cam) THE NENE WAS NAMED HAWAII'S STATE BIRD TWO YEARS BEFORE HAWAII WAS A STATE. AND FIFTY YEARS OF WORK HAVE PAID OFF. NOW THERE ARE UP TO 14-TO-15-HUNDRED NENE ACROSS THE STATE, BUT NOWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD. THERE'S LOTS MORE TO LEARN ABOUT THE COMPLETELY UNIQUE HAWAIIAN GOOSE AND THAT'S WHY HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, THE STATE DIVISION OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE AND THE MAUI BIRD CONSERVATION CENTER ARE HOSTING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, CONTESTS AND FACT-TO-BILL ENCOUNTERS.

(FF-VO-CG) HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE EVENTS PLANNED FOR THE 2007 VERSION OF NENE AWARENESS DAY, WHICH WILL INCLUDE A FIRST-TIME-EVER OPEN HOUSE OF THE MAUI BIRD CONSERVATION CENTER IN OLINDA. FOR LINKS TO WEBSITES WITH ALL THE DETAILS, VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM.

(Toss to C-BlocK)(2-Shot)

J. J: COMING UP NEXT IN SPORTS, THE OTHER 44 SHOES DROPPED AT THE 2007 M-I-L FOOTBALL SEASON OPENED THIS WEEK FOR BALDWIN AND LAHAINALUNA. THAT, PLUS MIL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL AND RESULTS OF THE 37TH MAUI MARATHON UP NEXT IN SPORTS WITH KALAPANA ON MAUI TV NEWS.

JY: AND I'LL BE BACK RIGHT AFTER THAT WITH A RUNDOWN OF VERY FUN THINGS TO DO...INCLUDING RESERVOIR DOGS COMING TO THE IAO THEATER AND - OF COURSE - THE MAUI COUNTY FAIR. THAT AND MORE WHEN MAUI TV NEWS CONTINUES.

(sports) (PiP-Sports)

K. K: SCORE EARLY AND SCORE OFTEN! WHILE THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT SHOULD BE THE SLOGAN OF EVERY TEAM IN ANY SPORT, THE LUNAS HAVE MADE IT THEIR MOTTO!

ALOHA EVERYONE WELCOME TO SPORTS ON MAUI TV NEWS. I'M KALAPANA. LAHAINALUNA OPENED ITS 2007 MIL FOOTBALL CAMPAIGN PRETTY MUCH THE WAY THEY RAN THEIR PRE-SEASON CAMPAIGN...WITH LOTS OF POINTS VERY EARLY IN THE GAME. THEIR SEASON OPENER LAST FRIDAY NIGHT AGAINST THE KAMEHAMEHA WARRIORS WAS A FUN BATTLE TO WATCH! AND THAT'S WHAT LOTS OF FOLKS DID!

(vo) HAPPY FACES FILLED THE STANDS ON BOTH SIDES AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. AND THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT HEARING A SCHOOL FIGHT SONG IN HAWAIIAN THAT REMINDS US WHY MAUI IS NO KA OI.

PLENTY TO WATCH ON THE FIELD, TOO AS LUNA Q-B JAKE MANNING BOBBLES THE SNAP THEN UNLOADS A BOMB TO LAKE CASCO WHO IS FINALLY DRAGGED DOWN BY THE WARRIORS' DEVYN TAVARES. IT'S TAVARES ON DEFENSE AGAIN, THIS TIME THE PASS IS INTENDED FOR EITHER OUR CAMERAMAN OR LUNA WIDE RECEIVER CHRIS WANKE. INCOMPLETE! LUNAS AHEAD AT THE HALF BY 28.

SECOND HALF ACTION SEES A LOT OF RUNNING ON THIS SWING PASS FROM KAMAHEMEHA'S BRYAN PALI TO KELONI KAMALANI. UNFORTUNATELY - NONE OF IT FRONTWARDS. LUNA FANS BREATHED A SIGH OF RELIEF WHEN LAKE CASCO POPPED UP FROM AN APPARENT SEVERE CRAMP. NOT ONLY DID CASCO SCORE TWO TOUCH DOWNS AND RACK UP 162 TOTAL YARDS...HE ALSO KICKED FOR THREE EXTRA POINTS. WITH LAKE ON THE SHORELINE, MANNING TURNED THINGS OVER TO KALLAS MCGEE WHO RUMBLED FOR 58 YARDS FOR A SECOND-HALF SCORE FOR LAHAINALUNA. LAKE - STILL ON BREAK - SO THE LUNAS WENT FOR TWO...GOOD. AT THAT POINT THE 35-POINT-LEAD MERCY RULE RUNNING CLOCK WENT INTO EFFECT.

BUT THE WARRIOR SPIRIT FORGES AHEAD. ON THE ENSUING KICKOFF, WITH APPARENTLY NOWHERE TO GO, WATCH AS KAMALANI DRAGS A TON OF LUNAS MORE THAN SIX YARDS BEFORE THEY PILE UP ON HIM. TWO PLAYS LATER, ANOTHER DRAW PLAY AS PALI HITS CURTIS PULI WHO CHARGES DOWN THE LEFT SIDE FOR A PICKUP DOWN TO THE LUNAS 14 YARD LINE. LAHAINALUNA HELD AND THE WARRIOR FAILED TO SCORE. THERE WERE BRIGHT SPOTS FOR KAMEHAMEHA AS THEIR DEFENSE WAS KEEN ON THE GROUND GAME, STUFFING MCGHEE ON THIS RUN INSIDE. BUT WITH CROWD SUPPORT BEHIND THEM, THE LUNAS COASTED TO A 42 TO 14 VICTORY.

((FF-VO-CG) SATURDAY NIGHT BALDWIN OPENED THEIR 2007 SEASON WITH A WIN OVER MAUI HIGH,. IT HAD BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE THEIR LAST GAME, BUT YOU WOULDN'T KNOW IT AS THEY DULLED THE MAUI HIGH SABERS 36-7.

(FF-CG-VO) THIS WEEK'S ACTION PITS THE TROJANS AGAINST THE LUNAS FRIDAY NIGHT AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. SATURDAY NIGHT THE BEARS HEAD UPCOUNTRY TO FACE NA ALII AT KING KEKAULIKE STADIUM.

(ONCAM) MOVING ON TO GIRLS VOLLEYBALL THIS WEEK, KAMEHAMEHA'S LADY WARRIORS APPEAR UNSTOPPABLE...BUT A VERY GOOD BATCH OF BALDWIN LADY BEARS HEADED TO PUKALANI LAST WEEK TO TEST THEM.

(vo) LOTS OF SPIRIT ON THE SIDE OF THE WARRIORS AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY...LOTS OF SPIRIT IN THE WARRIORS OF TOMORROW AS WELL AS THE KAMEHAMEHA GIRLS SHOW WHY THEYíRE SO GOOD. PARTLY BECAUSE THEYíRE SNEAKY. WATCH HULALI DELIMA SNEAK THIS ONE OVER THE TAPE AND INTO THE OPEN SPOT. BALDWIN ANSWERS WITH A LITTLE SURPRISE OF THEIR OWN AS SETTER LIA CABACUNGAN SAYS, "OH YEAH?" BUT THE WARRIORS APPEAR TO BE SO GOOD THAT - AFTER TELISSA TUA TAPS THIS OVERPASS DOWN FOR A POINT...THEY CAN ACTUALLY DO A TEAM HIGH-FIVE...WITHOUT ANYONE TOUCHING ANYONE!

WITH STRONG INSIDE HITTING BY THE LADY WARRIORS, BALDWIN APPEARED TO BE ON THE ROPES, DOWN IN THIS ONE 16-7...SO A TEAM TIME OUT AS THE STRUGGLING BEARS REGROUPED AND THE LADY WARRIORS CHEERED. BUT, BACK IN ACTION, THE BEARS SPRING TO LIFE...PARTICULARLY TUPUSA SATELE WHO BLOCKS 2006 MIL PLAYER OF THE YEAR DREANNE SHAW FOR THE POINT. AND THE LADY BEARS DO A NO-TOUCH HIGH-FIVE. NEXT PLAY...SATELE BLOCKS KAYLA-AL KALUAU. AND KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY, SISTER KATHY SATELE POWERS THIS ONE PAST THE DOUBLE BLOCK. IN THE END, THOUGH, THE RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF THE LADY WARRIORS WAS TOO MUCH FOR BALDWIN THE KING KAMEHAMEHA WENT ON TO WIN IT IN THREE STRAIGHT 25-13, 25-18 AND 25-18.

(on-cam) THE OTHER BIG SPORTS STORY THIS WEEK...THE 37TH ANNUAL MAUI MARATHON SHOWED THE LOCALS CAN HIGH-STEP WITH THE BEST OF THEM. FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR, JACOB ROTICH CAM IN FIRST - THIS YEAR BEATING LAST YEAR'S TIME BY FOUR MINUTES. YES, THATíS 26-POINT-TWO MILES IN TWO HOURS, 29 MINUTES AND 22 SECONDS...FROM QUEEN KAAHUMANU CENTER TO WHALER'S VILLAGE IN KA'ANAPALI. I'VE TAKEN LONGER THAN THAT TO DRIVE THAT COURSE! (rim shot) THANK YOU. ((FF-CG-VO) BUT IN SECOND PLACE WAS KIHEI'S OWN LEIGHTON KATSUDA, ON THE RIGHT IN THIS PHOTO. ON THE LEFT IS LORELLE HOVSEPIAN OF LAHAINA, THE TOP FEMALE FINISHER FROM MAUI - WITH AN OVERALL TIME OF THREE HOURS, 25 MINUTES AND 38 SECONDS.

(on cam) THAT'S A LOOK AT SPORTS THIS WEEK. KALAPANA WILL BE BACK WITH YOU NEXT WEEK. IN THE MEANTIME, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. LET US KNOW - AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR TEAM'S UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS. SEND YOUR NOTICES TO "SPORTS-AT MAUITVNEWS-DOT-COM" AND WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO GET A FILM CREW OUT TO COVER YOUR GAME. FOR MAUI TV NEWS, I'M KALAPANA. NOW HERE'S JULIE Y WITH COMING ATTRACTIONS.
