J: THINGS ARE LOOKING UP FOR THE ECONOMY IN HAWAII AND ACROSS THE NATION. SO MUCH SO THAT ECONOMISTS HAVE REVISED THEIR FORECAST.

AND, WHILE A COMMUNITY PITCHED IN TO CLEAN UP SOUTH MAUI, THE BARELY OPENED KEALIA BOARDWALK IS ALREADY A TARGET FOR VANDALS.

THOSE ARE TWO OF OUR TOP STORIES THIS WEEK, PLUS WE'LL TAKE YOU TO A DEMONSTRATION IN SOUTH MAUI AIMED AT REDUCING THE MENU CHOICES AT ONE RESTAURANT. ALL THAT PLUS SPORTS AND DETAILS ON A REALLY FUN WEEKEND AHEAD IN COMING ATTRACTIONS. WE'VE GOT IT ALL THIS WEEK ON MAUI TV NEWS.

(intro-FF)

J: ALOHA EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN THIS WEEK TO MAUI TV NEWS. I'M JEFF KING.

(TURN TO CAM)AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR OF DISMAL ECONOMIC REPORTS, THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL FINALLY APPEARS TO BE MORE THAN JUST A GLIMMER.

(TAKE UHERO PKG) ONLY TWO WEEKS AGO THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ECONOMIC RESEARCH ORGANIZATION RELEASED IT'S QUARTERLY REPORT - STATING IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT RECOVERY WAS STILL A LONG WAYS OFF. WELL, IN THAT SAME TWO-WEEK SPAN, AN ENTIRE NEW REPORT HAS BEEN GENERATED BECAUSE OF - QUOTE - A SHARP RECOVERY IN TRAVEL AFTER THE INITIAL H1NI - SWINE FLU SCARE.

HERE'S THE EFFECT IT'S HAVING ON THE NUMBERS. WEEKS AGO VISITORT ARRIVALS WERE PREDICTED TO DROP IN 2009 BY 6.8 PERCENT. AND THAT OVER A DISMAL 2008. NOW THAT ESTIMATED HAS BEEN REVISED TO JUST 4.4 PERCENT.

ON THE COST OF LIVING IN PARADISE, THE NEW UHERO REPORT FORECASTS THAT CONSUMER PRICES IN HAWAII WILL DROP BY A HALF A PERCENTAGE POINT THIS YEAR. THE EARLIER FORCAST WAS FOR A HALF-PERCENT INCREASE IN PRICES.

AND REAL INCOME FOR FAMILIES IN HAWAI'I WILL FALL BY ONE PERCENT. THE EARLIER ESTIMATE WAS FOR A DROP OF NEARLY THREE TIMES THAT MUCH.

WHILE HAPPY DAYS ARE NOT RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE SAD DAYS MAY BE MOSTLY BEHIND US AND THE RECOVERY HAS BEGUN. TO UNDERSCORE THAT, THE NEW REPORT POINTS OUT THAT - FOR 2009 - ARRIVALS FROM JAPAN WERE PRIDICTED TO DROP BY NEARLY 14 PERCENT. THAT HAS BEEN REDUCED BY A FULL 10 PERCENT. AND, THE UHERO FORECASTS ARRIVALS FROM JAPAN TO INCREASE BY 3.3 PERCENT NEXT YEAR AND ARRIVALS FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL CLIMB BY MORE THAN FIVE AND A HALF PERCENT.

CONSTRUCTION JOBS WILL TAKE A WHILE TO RETURN TO PRE-RECESSION LEVELS. BUT, ALREADY OTHER SIGNS IN OTHER ECONOMIC AREAS ARE ENCOURAGING. NEW STATS SHOW VISITOR ARRIVALS FROM JAPAN THIS MONTH ARE TWICE THE PACE AS THE REST OF THIS YEAR - AND, WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRINCESS CRUISES THAT TWO NEW SHIPS WILL BE RE-ADDED TO HAWAIIAN WATERS, THAT SEGMENT OF THE ECONOMY IS LOOKING FOR A GROWTH SPURT AS WELL.

(ON-CAM TAG) IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY - WITH ALL THE FACTS, FIGURES AND THE FORECAST, YOU CAN DO THAT GOING TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND CLICKING ON THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.

(KEALIA-BOARDWALK)(PiP-BROADWALK)

J: LAST SATURDAY THERE WERE COMMUNITY CLEAN-UPS IN WEST AND SOUTH MAUI. WE TOOK OUR MAUI TV NEWS CAMERAS OUT TO GIVE A LITTLE FACE TIME TO THE VOLUNTEERS WHO GAVE UP A CHUNK OF THEIR SATURDAY TO HELP OUT. BUT WHEN WE GOT THERE WE SAW A LOT MORE THAN JUST TRASH.

(TAKE KEALIA PKG) A BEAUTIFUL SATURDAY MORNING - EARLY - AS KEALIA POND WILDLIFE REFUGE MANAGER GLYNNIS NAKAI, DISPATCHES HER INTREPID WORKERS TO BEGIN A CLEANUP NEAR THE QUIETLY OPENED KEALIA BOARDWALK. SOUTH MAUI SUSTAINABILITY ALSO HALD A CLEANUP AT THIS SITE AND DOZENS OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS FANNED OUT. THE BOARDWALK, ITSELF, HAS STOOD FOR YEARS - BUT ONLY RECENTLY, WHEN THE PARKING AREA WAS COMPLETED, WAS IT LEGAL TO WALK THE 22-HUNDRED FOOT SCENIC PATHWAY. IT'S ALREADY BEEN OVERHAULED ONCE, BUT NOW - THANKS TO FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS, THEY CAN COMPLETE WORK AND THEY'LL BE GETTING A NEW ADDITION AS WELL.

Glynnis Nakai, Manager, Kealia Pond National Wildlife ARefuge.

GN01: "We received funds for an administrative office and visitor center. And a lot of that is due to the fire we had in November of 2006 which burned down our office. So, right now it's a temporary office we're in. So we're designing that and have it constructed by June 30, 2011. Strict requirement of the recovery funds."

SHE'S SMILING BECAUSE THE BOARDWALK RAN YEARS AND MILLIONS PAST IT'S DUE DATE AND BUDGET. THEN THE SMILE TURNED TO A FROWN AS SHE TOLD US ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO THE BOARDWALK WHILE NO ONE'S SUPPOSED TO BE THERE. PARTYGOERS USE THE POND AS A DUMP FOR BEER BOTTLES. AND VIEWING ANGLES TO TAKE IN SOME OF THE AMAZING BIRDS THERE ARE MARRED WITH GRAFFITTI. IN FACT, VANDALS HAVE BEEN BRINGING MOTORCYCLES ONTO THE WALK AND LEAVING TIER MARK. WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF THE BOARDWALK, SOPMEDAY SOON, THIS BRONZE TURTLE SCULPTURE BY DALE ZARELLA WILL BE IN PLACE AGAIN. LAST YEAR SOMEONE STOLE IT. IT WAS RETURNED AND IS IN STORAGE UNTIL IT CAN BE MORE SECURELY ANCHORED. MEANWHILE, PEOPLE ARE USING THE SIT FOR AN ASH TRAY...A DISPLAY AREA FOR GRAFFITTI TAGS, AND SOMEONE EVEN TOOK OUT A WHOLE SECTION OF THE RAILING.

ON THAT BEAUTIFUL MORNING, THOUGH, IT WAS ABOUT SPRUCING THE PLACE UP. BUT WE ALSO WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE OTHER ASPECT OF GLYNNIS'S BUSY LIFE - SEA TURTLES - AND THIS HAS BEEN A BUSY YEAR.

GN02: "Yes it has. Actually there's two hawksbill nesting turtles here at Kealia Beach. And one green sea turtle at Waiehu near the Maui Coastal Land Trust property, and there's another Green Sea Turtle nesting up toward Lahaniaside."

AGAIN THE GOOD NEWS TURNED TO BAD NEWS AS GLYNNIS TOLD US ABOUT A GRUSESOME DISCOVERY MADE BY SOME REGULAR SWIMMERS AT THE BEACH AT MOKULEIA. TWO SUNDAYS AGO THEY ARRIVED TO FIND A LOCAL MAN SHOWERING OUT THE REMNANTS OF WHAT WAS LEFT OF A SLAUGHTERED GREEN SEA TURTLE. THE MAN SAYS HE FOUND THE SHELL, AND CLAIMS MICRONESIANS HAD SLAUGHTERED THE TURTLE FOR MEAT THE NIGHT BEFORE. AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEGUN AND IT'S ILLEGAL TO KEEP A TURTLE SHELL SO IT WILL BE CONFISCATED.

IT'S ALL PART OF THE JOB OF POLICING THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF MAUI AND WITH HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY, THE JOB IS GETTING DONE.

(ON-CAM TAG) GLYNNIS TOLD US NO DATE HAS BEEN SET FOR THE BLESSING OF THE BOARDWALK AND THE OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING. WHEN WE KNOW, WE'LL BE SURE TO LET YOU KNOW.

(FOIE GRAS PROTEST)(PiP-GOOSE PIC)

J: IT HAS SUCH AN ELEGANT SOUNDING NAME: PATE DE FOIS GRAS. IT LITERALLY MEANS A PASTE OF FATTY LIVER. IT'S A DELICACY TO SOME - BUT THE EPITOME OF CRUELTY TO ANIMAL RIGHTS ADVOCATES.

(TAKE SENSEI PROTEST PKG) THERE ARE MARVELOUS RESTAURANTS ON MAUI THAT SERVE DELICIOUS FOOD. A MENU ITEM AT SENSEI RESTAURANT IN KIHEI, HOWEVER, HAS DRAWN THE IRE OF A GROUP OF ANIMAL RIGHTS PROTESTERS. LAST FRIDAY, THEY PICKETED THE RESTAURANT TO TRY TO GET THEM TO STOP SERVING THE DISH. EVENT ORGANIZER BARBARA STEINBERG EXPLAINED THE REASON FOR THE PROTEST AGAINST SENSEI - ONE OF AN ESTIMATED FOUR RESTAURANTS ON MAUI THAT SERVES PATE DE FOIE GRAS.

Barbara Steinberg, Protest Organizer

BS01: "Foie Gras is one of the most cruelest animal abuse cases of factory farming."

THE PRACTICE OF FOIE GRAS CREATION COMES IN THE FORCE-FEEDING OF A MUSH INTO THE THROATS OF CONFINED DUCKS AND GEESE TO CAUSE THEIR LIVER TO SWELL TO SOME 10 TIMES ITS NORMAL SIZE. EACH DUCK IS FORCE-FED ABOUT THREE POUNDS OF MUSH EACH DAY.

BS02: " That's the equivalent of force-feeding, air-drive, into a human, seven one pound boxes of dry pasta a day."

ON THE PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS WEBSITE, THERE'S A VIDEO NARRATED BY FORMER 007 STAR ROGER MOORE DETAILING THE ABUSE OF DUCKS AND GEESE. WE WARN YOU THAT THE IMAGES ARE GRAPHIC AND MAY BE DISTURBING TO SOME. SENSEI GETS ITS FOIE GRAS FROM A COMPANY CALLED HUDSON VALLEY FOIE GRAS IN NEW YORK THAT ONLY USES DUCKS FOR THEIR PRODUCT. IRONICALLY, THEIR WEBSITE INCLUDES A VIDEO FROM YOUTUBE THAT PURPORTS TO SHOW THE PROCESS AS HUMANE AND PAINLESS AND DESCRIBES THE DUCKS AS HAPPY TO UNDERGO THE TREATMENT THERE. THE PETA VIDEO ALSO INCLUDES IMAGES AND SCENES FROM HUDSON VALLEY - AND IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THESE ANIMALS AREN'T SUFFERING.

WE ASKED FOR A RESPONSE FROM LOCAL SENSEI MANAGEMENT WHO AT FIRST AGREED TO AN ON-CAMERA INTERVIEW - BUT THEN DECLINED. THE LOCAL MANAGER STATED THAT MENU DECISIONS WERE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE RESTAURANTS OWNERS IN HONOLULU. SO WE CONTACTED D.K. RESTAURANTS BY EMAIL. NONE OF OUR THREE ATTEMPTS RECEIVED A REPLY. WE CAN'T TELL YOU IF THEY MIGHT BE MOVED BY THE DISTURBING IMAGES, BUT SEVERAL NATIONS AND U.S. STATES HAVE BEEN. CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR ARNOLD SWARZENEGGAR SIGNED A BILL IN 2004 THAT WILL MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO PRODUCE OR SELL FOIE GRAS BEGINNING IN 2012. IT'S ALREADY BEEN OUTLAWED IN CHIGAO AS WELL AS IN ITALY, ISRAEL, GERMANY AND THE UNITED KINGDOM.

THE HISTORY OF THE DISH DATES BACK CENTURIES AND IS STILL CONSIDERED A DELICACY TO MANY. STEINBERG HAS A DIFFERENT DESCRIPTION OF PATE DE FOIE GRAS.

BS03: "This liver dish is nothing more than a diseased liver - a fatty liver - because it's enlarged 10 times normal size."

AND WHEN IT DOES - IT SELLS FOR UP TO 70 DOLLARS A POUND. DELICACY OR CRUELTY - THAT'S A DECISION FOR YOU TO MAKE. OUR JOB IS TO GATHER FACTS AND REPRESENT EACH SIDE WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

(ON-CAM TAG) TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MOVEMENT AND THE ISSUE, GO TO MAUI TV NEWS DOT COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S STORIES.
